These massive sandwiches are made from such high quality and delicious ingredients! It’s a small shop with 2 high tops and some benches outside so it’s mainly a takeaway place. The aesthetic is great, sandwiches are even better, and in this area of Portland the perfect way to start your day is ordering a sandwich and enjoying a coffee nearby.

Google
Alright... let's get real. The price point is a hard pill to swallow, but you'll have no time taking care of the delicious sandwiches from Ramona's. They delivered, at every stop!! The bread used is delightfully soft and crunchy in all the right ways. The meat is flavorful and high quality and the ingenious construction of the sandwiches are bar-none. It's a small shop, so plan on taking your sandwich to go and eat at a nice spot in the east end neighborhood.

Google
Showed up unannounced and asked for 10 breakfast sandwiches, and they absolutely drilled them out. 10/10 work and 10/10 sandwiches. Also banger soundtrack in the shop, give the person on aux a raise

Jey L.

Google
Got a few sandwiches here for lunch. Pork broccoli chard was missing some sort of mustard and broccoli was bitter. Turkey caesar was very tasty though. I think prices are very high. Also staff were not friendly at all.

Google
The coolest spot. Portland OBVIOUSLY has amazing food on every corner but this is a spot that keeps me coming back for more. The sandwiches are big enough to split with a friend-you will not leave hungry. Super welcoming and friendly staff AND they have the cutest merch! Love you, Ramona’s! Everyone come eat here-Cheers!

Catherine

Google
Best sandwich in Portland! A bit crowded and crammed when waiting for sandwich, but other than that it was great service

Olivia Steimke

Google
The classic Italian was so gd good. This came highly recommended from a friend so expectations were set high and it did not disappoint. The sharp provolone and olive spread complement each other so well and create a perfectly balanced sandwich. The sesame bread has a great crust and is soft so the roof of your mouth is safe. Probably a good thing I don’t live in Portland otherwise I would get this sandwich every day.

Google
Not too bad, not much seating which is fine so plan ahead for a place to eat just in case. The cooking staff had strong mouths (bleep, beep 🙄😆). Lots of bread and not enough substance in the sub is my biggest complaint.

Yelp
The bread. The BREAD!! So good. We go often, they have a pepperoncini mayo! I add it to pretty much whatever I am getting-which is why we can never do online ordering because there is no option to add it and it costs extra. I must get it because it cuts the richness of the sandwiches. They have the best scrambled eggs I have ever had on a breakfast sandwich at a restaurant. Soft and fluffy and heavenly. Their roast pork is amazing. I usually do not get the broccoli rabe on sandwiches as I am not a fan. They are open 9-3 (breakfast from 9-12) everyday except Tuesdays & Wednesdays. Street parking.

Yelp
I've just had the best vegetarian sandwich EVER. Correction: one of the best sandwiches period! Here's my ode to the Paulie hoagie at Ramona's: roasted broccoli rabe with a white bean spread, a bunch of fresh and crunchy greens (arugula and radicchio, not limp lettuce), Italian Giardiniera (nice pieces of pickled cauliflower!), with melted sharp Provolone. Absolutely delicious--not to mention generously sized, so even if you're starving like I was when I got there, this will fill you up. (NB I'm not even a vegetarian, but when I read that description I was like "oh YES.") This was my first visit to Ramona's, which is a cute little hole in the wall on a busy stretch of Washington Ave. (Parking tip: if you don't mind parking on a hill, the side street at the corner, Madison, often has a space or two to squeeze in even on a busy weekend.) Ramona's is sure to be packed, with good reason! Sidle on up to the register and order, and there are a few stools and small counter and a table where you can wait, and it'll be worth it when you're handed your amazing sandwich. Can't wait to stop by again and try some of the others, and to grab another Paulie too!

Ryan J.

Yelp
Very good breakfast sandwich and the lunch is great as well. I really like the broccoli rab and pork.

Yelp
Superb subs (hoagies, if you will, and that's the term they prefer) on thick, fresh, crackly bread. High quality meats and overall sandwich construction. It really all comes fine to that; keep it simple, use great ingredients, and execute with skill and hospitality, and they do just that. Limited seating and parking, but well worth the attempt.

Yelp
Wow. I was delightfully surprised at how delicious Ramona's sandwiches are! Sometimes when I see this style of bread with the crusty outside I worry it will be too chewy/hard to eat but the bread was actually very soft with the crust providing just the right amount of chew/crunch. I got the Italian and the Apolloand while both were delicious, the Italian was the flavor I kept wanting to go back to. I ordered mine sans tomatoes and onions, add pickles and mayo with a side of pepperoncini mayo. It was perfect, will be back, definitely need to try the roast pork. The online ordering was easy and they poured my iced tea when I got there so no melt ice cubes. Great service!

Yelp
I was so excited to finally have a "hoagie"from Ramona's. The end result was not impressed with our sandwiches. Inferior cold cuts in the Italian & not roasted turkey in the turkey caesar hoagie. Overpriced & underwhelmed says it all. I do want to say the rolls are awesome

Alex B.

Yelp
The Apollo was a great sandwich. Food was ready fast. Check out Ramona's for lunch soon.
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
We tried the original and it was perfect. Three of us shared it packed full of fresh meat and cheese. It was the perfect snack for our car ride while traveling around.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
We've eaten a few Ramona's sandwiches and they're all great!! The Apollo is the best one IMO and I love that they have a crab dips to complement. The space is small, but enough room for a few groups to sit and enjoy. I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Would be leaving 3.5 stars if half stars were an option. After seeing many friends sharing the photos of their delicious looking sandwiches, I decided it was time I give Ramona's a go. While the sandwich itself is a decent size with good flavor, the price is even bigger... I was honestly shocked at the prices for these sandwiches. I married a sandwich LOVER who is always looking for the next best sandwich so made the executive decision to do a pre-check before making him take the drive from Minot. I'm pretty sure the sticker shock alone of the sandwiches would be hard for him to swallow... The menu seemed to be a bit smaller than other sandwich shops and I'm not sure if you can create your own or not. The location is very cute and a lovely little addition to Washington Ave. There is not a lot of indoor seating so not the best for a bigger group unless you're taking them to go. I tried the Apollo and was able to order the Junior breakfast sandwich for my two year old and modify it into a turkey sandwich. I enjoyed the combination of the turkey, capicola, and arugula on the sandwich and equally enjoyed their unique choice for chips: Crab. Would I eat here again? Yes Will I cringe a bit when I hand over my card to pay $16 dollars for a sandwich? Also yes

Aubrey C.

Yelp
The Market St is the best vegetarian sandwich I've ever had, and probably ever will have. It's also a beautiful little shop.
google avatar

Yelp
The hoagies will cost you, but they're totally worth the splurge when possible. The interior of Ramona's is small but charming, and staff are friendly and efficient. I like the convenient location and never have much trouble finding a parking spot nearby. My first visit I had the Italian, which I'd order next time with very little olive salad, or skip it altogether. I found that made the sandwich a bit too salty for me, but the meat was tasty. Next visit I tried the Turkey Caesar hoagie and that was even better than the Italian to me. Flavorful and filling--you can't beat it!

Yelp
Is this one of the best breakfast sandwiches in Portland? I think it's definitely a contender! Breakfast is served until 11am. I ordered online - which was super easy to do - and got the Eggs and Cooper Sharp on a poppy seed roll ($6), but added potatoes ($1) and chili spread ($1). The chili spread IS SO WORTH IT. You probably want to ask for extra! SKIP THE POTATOES. I thought they'd be like fried or hashbrown-y or at least crunchy, but this was just a few (literally) boiled potato chunks. I didn't even know they were there until I opened up the sandwich to look for them. Skip, skip, skip. But the egg is really the star of the show anyway. I don't think there's another place in Portland putting THAT MUCH EGG on their sandwiches. It feels like twice the amount that's what "normal" is considered. Ramona's, whatever magic you're doing with this fluffy mountain of perfectly cooked egg PLEASE DON'T CHANGE IT. I've seen so many Portland businesses start strong, and have this unique-to-them-thing, and then something happens where they change their recipe and think people don't notice. Oh, we notice. Trust me. After eating half I was *full*; but I powered through because, well, it was honestly too delicious to stop. I'm already looking forward to more, and wouldn't complain at all if Ramona's started offering breakfast sandwiches all day (Portland doesn't have enough spots with mid-day breakfast sandwiches, so please help fill this obvious hole in our culinary scene!).
google avatar

Lea L.

Yelp
No comments needed. Just get it. My go to is the classic Italian combo. Their bread is so delicious. Always stop there when I visit Portland!
google avatar

Dan K.

Yelp
Sometimes a $20 sandwich is not worth it. Sometimes it is. At Ramona's, GET THE SANDWICH. Any of them, but here's the pro-tip: sub fresh mozzarella for provolone. You will lead a happier be more morally upright life if you do.
google avatar

Brooke L.

Yelp
You guys I just can't with this place. We drove by it all the time, we watch people devour subs while we're walking to our car - we've said a million times 'we've really gotta try that place some time'. I'm so glad we finally did. I'm about to make a big claim - don't come for me. Ramona's has the best Italian I've ever put in my mouth. THERE, I said it. You have to call ahead, you're not getting inside. Place the order, show up in 10 minutes and this perfectly sliced and stacked gift from the gods will be waiting for you at the window. I can't tell you why it's so good. Maybe it's the local sesame bread? Maybe it's the shredded lettuce? Perhaps it's the unexpected hero - CHILI OIL - who knows? All I know is that when I'm laying in bed at night my mouth waters if I've gone too long without one. Do yourself a solid and hit up Ramona's. I promise you won't regret it.

Yelp
I love the bread they use here. It's crispy yet soft, AKA it doesn't tear up the roof of your mouth. I ordered the Melrose and really enjoyed my choice! I think these sandwiches are the perfect size. I could've eaten the whole thing but decided to save the other half for dinner. Still tasted good hours later (refrigerated of course). My friend ordered the Pork sandwich and enjoyed it. I tried a bite but didn't love it, broccoli rabe can be quite a bitter and overpowering flavor. Definitely would come here again.
google avatar

Lexie T.

Yelp
Quickly stopped here on our way through Maine. We got a delicious sandwich. It was big enough to share! It's a small little sandwich shop in Portland, Maine.

Alexis A.

Yelp
Sandwiches were delicious! They give you a lot of meat which is nice! Nice area to walk around! My only reservation was that there was a tad too much bread for my liking!
google avatar

Yelp
Sunday lunch We will be back. Bread was to die for along with contents.... 10 stars. Maine life was the reason we tried. Thanks
google avatar

Todd R.

Yelp
This was my first visit here and it was a perfect 5 star experience from beginning to end. The online ordering process was easy and efficient. The order was ready promptly and I was notified via text immediately. The sidewalk pickup window was very COVID conscious and safe. Most importantly, the sandwich was outstanding. I had the classic Italian sub which is no mild mannered offering. Instead this is a spicy, peppery, unctuous punch in the face... all delivered in a sesame seed covered hoagie roll that was criminally good. The combination of intense flavors and textures was amazing. I can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Yelp
Best sandwich in New England. Don't think twice about it, just go! Definitely big enough for 2 if you are concerned about the price. Worth every penny.
google avatar

Gabrielle D.

Yelp
Had such a great experience ordering takeout from Ramona's. I called ahead and you pickup at an outdoor window. You pay over the phone so when you pickup it's super quick. I got the Apollo which was hearty and delicious. It was big enough for 2 servings so I doctored the second half up at home and thought it was better. I added fresh ground pepper to the huge mozzarella slab and drizzled EVOO on the dry bread side. I think if they put the pesto on the other side of the bread it would be more moist. My husband got the chicken caesar sandwich and loved it. I'm interested in returning to try the original italian. Very delicious, hearty and homemade.

David M.

Yelp
Excellent large sandwiches and "corner store" vibe. A welcome working class establishment for this gentrified area. Well done!

Yelp
Ramona's is definitely known for their delicious hoagies, and for good reason! (Pro tip: order one and take it to any of the beaches in the summertime, just beware that seagulls will 100% try to steal it!) However, an underdog on their menu is the breakfast sandwich. When I say it is one of the best breakfast sandwiches in town, I mean it. The brioche bun is SO soft, and make sure you get it with the long hots, unless you can't handle heat!

Julia B.

Yelp
Ramona's is quite literally if your favorite Northeast Philly neighborhood hoagie shop transplanted to Washington Ave. In New England/Maine it is not commonplace that a sandwich is served on a perfect roll or features a handful of perfectly executed meats, cheeses, and toppings. Often a mass produced hotdog bun will serve as a sub roll and that's just insanity. Philly sandwich and hoagie culture is unwavering in its quest to have the best bread and be your favorite roast pork sandwich or Turkey hoagie or Italian. It's cocky but not pretentious which I love. How lucky are we that Ramona's has brought that energy and commitment to being the best hoagie in Portland. The interior is charming, clean, and familiar and the outside is currently sporting some very beautiful holiday garland. I also have to say - the service is everything. Reliably fast and delicious every time - the team at Ramona's is a huge part of what makes coming back so sweet. I have a 4 month old who will often fall asleep on my drive in to pick up my roast pork (extra provolone, add Mayo) - when that has been the case, whoever is working the front has come out and passed my sandwich to me through the car window. Its a little gesture, its I'm sure kind of annoying, but that extra touch is what makes me love coming back. So glad you're a part of the Portland food scene - Go Birds

Yelp
Online Ordering: 5/5 Wait time: 1/5 Price: 1/5 Taste: 3/5 Overall: 2.5 Ordered online and it was a breeze! Menu items were detailed and the ordering system was easy to follow. However, I did wait 40-minutes from the time I ordered til the time I received a text for pick-up at the window - for a Sandwich. Price was steep after added Hots and Mayo as they were available options on their website. $18.00 for a Sandwich. Taste was bland and the ratio for bread thickness and meat/veggies was too thick in my opinion. Overall, glad I tried it but most likely will not be ordering again. Factoring in the steep price, long wait time and lack of taste - I will avoid this establishment and try other shops in the area.

Jane Q.

Yelp
The sandwiches are very good. The prices are unreasonably high. The service is the most unprofessional and hostile I've experienced in years, and this is based on numerous visits. No modifications, even for allergies, are allowed and if you ask, you are treated aggressively and rudely. I decided after my most recent visit that the sandwiches are not worth the poor customer service, especially given their poor customer service comes in the form of aggression and hostility, which can affect your emotions and quality of life.

Leslie W.

Yelp
Great sandwiches with quality and fresh ingredients. The bread is the perfect mix of crunchy but soft. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Nina R.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches. Their Italian sub was incredible. We ate there and there is one small table and a row of high chairs. Small space but comfortable for two people. Retro vibe. The staff were really nice. Got our food in about 15 minutes, there were quite a few walk ins and order ahead.
google avatar

Yelp
Whether you're stopping by for breakfast or lunch, Ramona's has some incredible options. After multiple stops in for breakfast, I finally went for lunch today and was blown away by the quality of the Turkey Caesar Hoagie. The bread they use across the board is amazing, so fresh, fluffy and flavorful. The hoagie was packed with so much meat, the dressing was fantastic and I love how they shred the lettuce. It was honestly enough sandwich for two people, that's how hearty it was. On the breakfast front, I've been here many times. I love to stop by and grab a breakfast sandwich and swing by the Eastern Prom to eat it. I like the Ramona Roll, which has egg, cooper sharp cheese, bacon and broccoli rabe with this really nice Calabrian chili sauce that pulls it all together. Sub out the bacon for pork roll if you're feeling dangerous. Overall, a really nice little spot that is a go-to every time I'm in Portland.
google avatar

Patrick T.

Yelp
Great food, great service, fresh veggies, couldn't ask for anything better, wish they did new things.

Bryan B.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast sandwiches I've had. Broccoli rabe on an egg sandwich is a must try. Big portion for an egg sandwich, so you won't be hungry afterwards!! Bread was also amazing. Looking forward to trying more here next time.
google avatar

Kate P.

Yelp
I had been dying to try Ramona's since they opened up. It's hard to find a REAL Italian in Portland and they promised just that; Mortadella, Hot Capicola, Genoa Salami, Sharp Provolone, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Olive Salad & Hoagie Dressing. All served on a toasted sesame hoagie roll. The hoagie dressing was not overdone and had a nice sweet flavor. The sandwich was good and the portion was big, however the price was hard to look past. $17 for a sandwich is too much! Will I go back? Sure, it was a solid sandwich and a few others on the menu sounded good, but with those prices it's hard to justify being a regular. The sandwich itself is a solid 4 but leaving a 3 star review for factoring in the cost.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Best breakfast sandwich I've ever eaten!!! Get the breakfast hoagie - eggs, salami, roasted peppers, provolone, arugula, pepperocini mayo on FRESH baked sesame hoagie - utter deliciousness. So glad I made the stop to try this place out before leaving Portland. Ended up having to eat this in the car and while it was a bit messy, it was amazing. Can't wait to eat here again when I'm in Portland again.
google avatar

Yelp
After running past here on many occasions and smelling the delicious smells coming out of the store, I decided to make a last stop here before my departure from Portland. They have limited hours and are primarily open in the morning or until 2 pm, so I raced here after placing a phone order for an Italian sandwich pick up. Because I saw how big the sandwiches were, I decided to order a large one to share with two people. I should have asked to add mayo or some sort of condiment on it, because although it was a very large sandwich with lots of lettuce, onion, and different types of deli meat, it was a pretty dry and lacked flavor. I really wanted to like the italian sandwich, since I am a big fan of them normally, but compared to the wet and juicy italian sandwiches that I'm used to, this one seemed to be less flavorful than I had anticipated. They have a couple of other sandwiches including a breakfast sandwich and tuna sandwich that I'll have to try to get a second opinion. Overall, very hefty sandwich, however lacking the flavor that I was looking for. Very quick if you need something to grab and go!
google avatar

Yelp
Finely crafted and huge don't usually go together but they do at Ramona's! Not surprising as it is one of the partners behind the renowned palace diner that also owns Rose Foods. Giant crusty rolls filled with generous amounts of the finest ingredients yield sandwiches that are amazing! We tried both the Italian and the Melrose(tuna), both were filled with the best stuff and went perfectly with those huge sesame encrusted rolls! At 13 bucks plus add ons it may seem a lot for a sandwich, but I can assure you it is a giant delicious value!

Michael D.

Yelp
Great hoagies. My Philly friends say it tops most places there. Roll and meats and cheeses high quality. A must try place. Hoagies are big
google avatar

Beth T.

Yelp
Go here and you will not be disappointed! The turkey caesar sandwich is heavenly. Ok, now I'm hungry and need to go back!! Everything is fresh and delicious!! Best in Portland

Jesse T.

Yelp
ramona roll is one if the better breakfast sandwiches i've had. the broccoli raab and chili sauce are great additions

Yelp
We were heading out on the boat in Portland and wanted to find some delicious sandwiches to go, after reading the reviews on Portland food bloggers Instagram, we decided to give this place a shot. Highlights - online ordering was insanely impressive, it was quick & very efficient - huge subs, I ended up splitting mine with someone - delicious & flavorful Cons - not a huge variety of subs - it's a big sub but was pricey for what it is - bread didn't seem as fresh as I had hoped Overall, I would come back especially for a takeout situation.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
We accidentally stumbled upon this place we were looking something to eat for lunch so we got the Italian the large split in half was perfect for me and my wife. Seriously best Italian sub I've had in Maine so far. Will definitely be coming back again.
google avatar

Rick A.

Yelp
I was excited to try this place after hearing glowing reviews from friends, however I was disappointed. I ordered their flagship italian. Maybe I just hit them on an "off" day. The main concern was the bread. It was overcooked, "Burnt", and very dry. It was so overcooked it actually tasted burnt. I did not even finish the sandwich, and I was Very hungry. The contents of the sandwich were great which is why I'm giving 3 stars. High quality meats, very nice provolone and veggies, etc. Also... a lot of meat! I will give another try, but this visit to Ramona's was no bueno.

Kaitlyn L.

Yelp
Always so great! Breakfast or lunch, I am always so happy I went to Ramona's. Ask to get your hoagie cut in half - the pro move. They don't skimp on product or portions, and you pay for a quality sandwich. Only things I don't like are these weird stuffed peppers - not recommended. Add chili sauce to everything. The Turkey Hoagie is a clear winner in my house, but I am fan of their breakfast sando with rabe and bacon. If you don't want to wait around, order online.
google avatar

Melissa Z.

Yelp
Born and raised under the ruthless tutelage of criticism and high standards of an Italian American family dynasty in New Jersey, I can confidently state I have eaten no less than 1 million Italian cold cut sandwiches through the duration of my humble 35 year residency in this current life. That being said, Ramona's is nothing short of exceptional. I rated this sandwich a 9.2 out of 10, on a carefully crafted algorithm scale I've been developing for most of my life.
google avatar

Jonathan T.

Yelp
One of the best, that we could recall, egg sandwiches on a bun with added bacon and tomato. How in the world do you get those eggs so fluffy!!! Excellent! And much appreciated!

Musicbeachdance ..

Yelp
I went searching for a breakfast sandwich that was a decent portion with great taste. Great portions and flavors. The bread is soft and definitely filling, overall highly recommend. The ambience has a little café vibe but you can also get your order for takeout as well and the quality was still wonderful. I tried the Ramona roll and I recommend it. It is a little bit spicy with their, broccoli rabe but had bold flavors otherwise. Very quick especially knowing they prepare your sandwich from scratch when you order it.

Hank H.

Yelp
Wow that was incredible! Great flavors in the Ramona Roll. I can't wait to tell my friends that live locally. Can't wait to come back!
