Best Tex-Mex Restaurants in Austin

"This Wells Branch restaurant’s menu reads like a dictionary of Tex-Mex favorites. Chimichangas stuffed with roasted chicken, green chiles, and smothered in sauce; tender pork marinated in red chile; steak a la Mexicana; fajitas; tortilla soup; fried ice cream; and numerous combination plates. Takeout orders can be placed online, but eating inside the strip mall spot gives that hidden gem feel, with green booths, mix and match chairs, and a bar for solo eaters." - Erin Russell, Nadia Chaudhury

Google
Absolutely hands down one of the best Mexican restaurants I have been to. A hidden gem. I will be visiting Ramos every chance I get. Staff and food were on point. Service is definitely A+.....

The food was delicious! But the tortillas are not handmade.

Just left this place. 11/15. Me and a friend wanted to try it out. Got seated right away. They brought chips & salsa. Then every waiter/waitress just stared at us as they waited on the tables around us.. like several times. 15 min of this behavior. The tables around us started getting their drinks and placing their food orders. We we finally gave up and left.

Google
As of October 2020, this is my favorite Mexican food spot. The google reviews did not steer us wrong. The jalapeño cream sauce that they bring out with the chips is phenomenal. The chips were great also, perfectly crispy and flavored. The service was very attentive. Would definitely come back (often).

Google
My family and I love this place. We’ve been eating here for years, everything on this menu is good. The down side is waiting for the the food, it can take a while to get your food. If you choose to dine in, make sure you have a little extra time. My favorite are the beef fajita nachos. They put plenty of beef so you get what you pay for. They other thing we really enjoy on a cold day is their tortilla soup. I’ve included pictures of both. Sorry, we were already eating when I took it.

Google
This place is in my neighborhood literally 5 min away so I finally tried it. My daughter and I are hooked. Consistently great food everytime!!! The rice could be better (it’s not the fluffy home made Spanish rice you get some places) but the chicken fajita, the beans, the tacos and enchiladas oh man it’s good!!! The jalapeño cream sauce they serve with chips is insane. This is our new weekly haunt. We crave this food. The atmosphere is cozy and it’s never packed. Good job Ramos!

My friends and I had a great experience at Ramos restaurant on Sunday afternoon. The food was delicious. But what stood out above all to all ten of us was our server. Rolando served each one of us with a smile. 😃 He was attentive and courteous, bringing whatever we asked for, and waited to see if we were satisfied. Everyone noticed his hard work, which he performed effortlessly. Rolando is an exceptional young man. We will go back and ask for him!

Google
We pretty much go here every Sunday after church. I've been here like a million times. Maybe a million and two times. They have really good jalapeno ranch. Their quesadillas are okay but their nachos are incredible

Yelp
Word of mouth brought us here, and we weren't disappointed. The breakfast tacos were large and filled well with eggs and my requested vegetables. The tortillas were very soft. The beef tacos had crunchy shells, well flavored beef, and a generous portion of cheese, as requested. The salsa had a nice burn, and the chips were tasty. Service was solid. Our server didn't hover, but our drinks remained full.

Yelp
We dined in for dinner on a Saturday evening. Service was great! Our server was attentive and provided a pleasant experience for me and my partner. It's a very laid back eatery. Food itself was good but I can't give them my stamp for best enchiladas, I felt the meat and sauce could still use more vibrant flavors. We also got fajitas chicken quesadillas and the fried ice cream which I really enjoyed. I am curious about their breakfast options so I may return but try something different.

Yelp
The two of us came here because of their very good reviews, and the fact that they have a happy hour from 3-7, which we couldn't pass up. Just understand that happy hour means one dollar off the drink. Inside there is at least 15 tables to sit at along with 5 two person booths. They start you off with their complementary chips and freshly made salsa which has a nice kick to it. They do have three beers on tap along with frozen margaritas, but not much in the way of craft beer. I decided on the large frozen margarita, and I have to admit it definitely had a kick. I decided on a beef fajita burrito, which was a perfect Tex-Mex experience. My guest polished off every single one of her black bean and cheese nachos. I have to admit this place gives Chuy's and Baby A's a run for the money. Definitely a place I'd come back to. Informative photos included.

Yelp
Ramos is my FAVORITE place to go for Tex-Mex! They have unbeatable prices, delicious food, sizable portions, and fantastic hospitality... what's not to love?! FAST FACTS: * Parking: located in a shopping center so there's plenty of parking available in the lot in front of the building * Online ordering: available for pickup at the restaurant * Delivery: available through third-party * Complimentary chips and salsa are served as soon as you sit down * They serve all-day breakfast! SERVICE - I've been to Ramos at least a dozen times and have always had amazing service! Even when they're busy, the servers constantly make sure you have drinks, chips, and everything else you need. The workers are friendly, accommodating, and make you feel like family. It makes a great food experience that much better! PRICING - Incredibly reasonable for the amount of food you get! The total for a large queso compuesto, combination #2 plate, combination #3 plate, Chipotle shrimp plate, and flan was $62.21 after tax and the portion sizes are HUGE! CHIPS AND SALSA (9/10) - Come prepared to eat your body weight in chips because they're that good! These are served complimentary when you sit down and they'll keep bringing them to you if you ask!The chips are the perfect thickness (no one likes a thin chip that breaks the second you dip it in salsa) and have a nice amount of salt. They're crispy and addictive in the best way! They are served with a red salsa and a jalapeño ranch... both of which are delicious with a slight kick! QUESO COMPUESTO (10/10) - It's a big bowl of cheese with pico, guac, and ground beef... aka it's amazing! I get this every time and always recommend it to others. If any of your entrees come with rice, pour some of this on top and thank me later! COMBINATION #2 (10/10) - This is always my go-to because you get to try so many different things! You get 2 cheese enchiladas with tex-mex sauce, 2 chicken flautas, one soft or crispy taco, and sour cream. It also comes with rice and your choice of beans and everything is delicious! COMBINATION #3 (9/10) - This one is for the enchilada lovers! Each enchilada has a different filling and is topped with a different sauce so it's a flavor explosion! This also comes with rice and your choice of beans. CHIPOTLE SHRIMP PLATE (10/10) - This is almost like a fajita on a plate (which is obviously a compliment). The shrimp are a good size and are tossed with the onion, bell peppers, and chipotles in adobo sauce which pack that delicious sweet and smoky flavor with a little heat. It's served over rice with a side of beans, lettuce, pico, and fresh avocado. This was my first time ordering this dish and I'll definitely get it again! HOMEMADE FLAN (9/10) - Yum! It's super sweet and decadent while also being light at the same time. It's a great sweet end to an already tasty meal! Ramos is one of the best kept secrets in North Austin! Be prepared... once you visit once, it will be the only place you want to visit for Tex-Mex!

Yelp
Put to go order in at location; it took over 45 min. We had tortilla soup with a side of rice and chicken fajita quesadillas. The tortilla soup had stale chips in it. The quesadillas were thrown together with very little meat. We were hoping the wait would have been worth it but no. Never ever will we go back when in Austin. There are way too many other options to choose from with faster service and better quality.
google avatar

Xochtil G.

Yelp
Convenient location for accessibility and gas service nearby. Fair environment and variety of food. Less heated options for only mild lovers. Curious that some items on menu misspelled. Coming again in rare occassion, yet still prefer more "hot" options.

Yelp
I heard good things about this place but I was a little disappointed. I think I'd probably give this place like a 3.5? I don't think anything was bad but overall meal was kind of mid. The service was pretty great though and very nice. I had one of the combination plates with variety of enchiladas. The beef and cheese were both pretty good. I was a little disappointed by the chicken enchiladas though.

Yelp
My MIL brought my husband and I here for breakfast Sunday morning. Everything was amazing! Their chips and salsa and creamy jalapeño remind me of chews which was fabulous. My only drawback was it was $50 plus tip for three people to eat on a Sunday morning.

Patrick M.

Yelp
Do NOT order the sides!!! I have always loved this place until I ordered some sides for burrito night and couldn't believe how little they gave for the price. 1.9 ounces of cheese, 3.4 ounces of rice, 12 ounces of black beans. 3 small flour tortillas. $15.75 total plus tip. I was embarrassed to show my friends. It's literally only enough for one person. Will continue to go here for breakfast tacos, but the sides are a complete cash grab.

Mindy J.

Yelp
I went there for breakfast with a friend. The service was impeccable. The food delicious. I was so impressed that I came back later that week for dinner. Everyone there is friendly. The food was served within minutes of ordering. And, it was Happy Hour, so of course I had to have a margarita. Overall, a very enjoyable experience.

Lydia Z.

Yelp
This place has good margaritas, great service and great food. Always fresh. The atmosphere and friendly.
google avatar

Vanessa G.

Yelp
I ordered this on DoorDash & it was really good! It was still crispy and fresh when it arrived at my house. The flavor was good and on point with everything. I can't wait to come sit in person & try it out. The Chili con Queso was my favorite
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Service was great and accommodating. The food was bomb! I had the stuffed avocado which was absolutely delicious!! I used to get this at Gringos in Houston before they took it off the menu for some strange reason; theirs was stuffed with ground beef and cheese tho. The chicken was PERFECT! Tasted like it was freshly fried, I swear it tasted like they deboned a breast from KFC lol .... Not the rice was cool; but the churro beans were undercooked and could've used more seasoning it was more watery than soupy which was disappointing, after I added the salsa that came with our chips it was edible. Overall we enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Britt Z.

Yelp
Yay!!! I have finally found a tex mex spot in north Austin that does it right! Cheese enchiladas were on point! I haven't had enchiladas in over 7 months and these were definitely worth the extra calories. Also, I learned they have breakfast all day! Which is great for people like me that want a huevos ranchero plate at 2:16pm We also tried the house Mexican martini. It definitely packed a punch! The service was great! Our food came out so fast and piping hot! I will definitely circle back by to try the breakfast menu items along with one of the many varieties of blended margaritas!

Yelp
Hubby and I ordered delivery: 5 of the 6 tacos didn't have the onion and cilantro we ordered (just received meat only) Hubby's flautas didn't come with any dipping options i.e. guacamole, sour cream. Also, this was the first Mexican restaurant we've ordered from that didn't include salsa of any kind. Also, they didn't give any utensils or napkins. They substituted a dessert they didn't end up having for an item that was cheaper which I didn't have an issue with, but was still charged for the original option. The queso, flautas and enchiladas were good in that order. The tacos were okay.
google avatar

Antonia M.

Yelp
The food and service is really good. They almost did not honor the 15 percent discount offered on Yelp when i went up to pay, so careful if you expect a discount and dont get it. They did give it to me after I explained what it was for, but said they didn't know anything about it and would only do the discount this one time.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is always great and when they make a mistake that always make it right! Fast service as well!

Yelp
Service was fast and efficient with sitting and drink order. I will see it immediately at 7 o'clock on a Saturday night with no reservation. The chips very nice. Add the salsa was spicy but not blow your head off. Staff was very attentive. The menu has a lot of options for breakfast dinner, and the drink menu are all very large. You will definitely find something you like especially since I am a picky eater. I had a hard time choosing would have it all sounds very nice. The chicken flautas was amazing. The food came out in under 15 minutes and the refried brains had a lot of flavor. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the rice and guacamole was excellent. If there is one thing that I had to complain it was the sour cream, and the rice was a little spicy. Overall nine out of 10 would recommend.

Yelp
Been coming to this place for the past 5 yrs. Go in hungry and leave full and satisfied. Staff is friendly and will definitely recognize returning customers. Thanks also to this place for taking my order of 80 breakfast tacos the day before I was needing them.

Efrain M.

Yelp
I've been to this restaurant in this past, although infrequently. The food had always been good. But gosh was i disappointed and disgusted yesterday, 10/12/2023. I ordered their Thursday lunch special, a Chile Relleno with a chicken filling. If arrived looking promising with Mexican rice and Charro beans. When I cut into it I was surprised to see a bright green Anaheim chile. I was surprised not that it was an Anaheim chile but that it looked raw. I took a bite of the breaded chile and sure enough it was raw and uncooked. I proceeded to scrape the breaded coating and the filling. I had asked for chicken but it was a soft mayonnaise like concoction with very little chicken, if any. It was gosh awful. The service is very good - friendly and efficient. Hopefully their other dishes are edible. What's perplexing is my past visits had been good. I may return but I will not order the Chile Relleno.

Sharon W.

Yelp
I had gone to Ramos about 2 years ago and the food was pretty good. I went back last week and the food was terrible. The flour tortillas were hard. The beef fajitas in the fajita tacos did not taste good. The refried beans were runny and the rice was tasteless. The service was slow and there were very few customers. Won't be returning.

L Y.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants great Tex-Mex dishes and good salsa. I've always had excellent service by their staff.

Tawny L.

Yelp
Ramos is by far the best Mexican restaurant in the area. With a Mexican mom that could cook with the best of them and growing up here in Texas I know good Mexican food. They have the absolute best Carne Gusada. The chips are always fresh and warm, with salsa made to perfection. None of that bland tasting crap to fill space and time. Every part of the meal is made with the purpose to taste good. Every single time I go somewhere else, I regret it. I hope you open a place up in pflugerville but until this I will just come to you.

Mia G.

Yelp
Employee's are rude I had an issue with my order and the Manager Vida stated she would correct the order. When I went to order person on the phone said there was no MOD I asked again and she said no manager until Monday. Finally spoke with someone else and she was completely rude. When I walked in to pick up my order the girl behind the counter made a comment about me in Spanish not knowing I completely understood her. FAIL FAIL FAIL

Yelp
The food is great. We had taco salad enchiladas plate and all was good. Nice n hot with fresh veggies

Bill Z.

Yelp
As someone hoy grew up in the ATX I know my TEX MEX. Ramos is the best! normally 5 STAR SERVICE keeps me coming back. Hopefully today was a fluke. GREAT FOOD as always . the service was a 2 at best. Upgraded one plate charged extra but not added, instead of sweat tea I received very hot unsweet. among other things. I understand when packed this happened. But today was not very busy. Maybe I am spoiled from all the other visits.

Yelp
My favorite TexMex in Austin. No discussion. Food is always so fresh. I don't know how this place isn't known better vs the other local trash TexMex. Lunch specials are amazing. Prices overall are very reasonable for the area. Great for breakfast lunch and dinner. Great burgers too. Owner Fidel and his wife are friendly and accommodating. Staff is great and attentive. They care about quality, and it shows.

Yelp
Ok Ramos. I see what you're doing here. This is only my second visit and will damn sure not be my last. I got take out because I think my gut was eating itself. Super friendly service. She even ran out to my car because I'm a dumb nut and I forgot a side. Thank the baby Jesus she stopped me because that was my cheese and sour cream situation. Crazy fast especially for what I came home with. Fresh homemade fluffy tortillas? Check Creamy, savory queso? Check Fluffy flavorful Spanish rice? Check Like a little smokiness and oh so slight kick in your charro beans? They got you The fajitas themselves melted in my face hole so fast I'm not entirely sure that I chewed it properly. Oops High fives all around for the best take out I've had. It hot every note I'd hoped for and I'm a VERY picky Tex-Mex connoisseur. So yeah... i goes it was alright.... Don't hesitate for a second if you have any hesitations about this family restaurant. Oh... and kudos for the Selena Coke print on the wall.. ANYTHING FOR SALINAS Oh... one final thing Jalapeño Ranch that should embarrass Chuy's . Order it. You're welcome

Yelp
The food is always delicious when we go! As a south texas girl it's hard to find Mexican spots that mirror the south texas Tex-max style but this one gets the job done! Favorites are the breakfast tacos, jalapeño ranch salsa, and limonada!
google avatar

Yelp
Our family absolutely loves Ramos. The staff , service and food are so wonderful. I feel like they are my family. I go so much now haha. I can't wait to go again this week !! My favorite place to go !

Yelp
It is with hesitation and frustration that I update this review and knock off a star.. I love this place. It's in my neighborhood, the happy hour specials are great (all day on Saturday), the food is almost always excellent.. The prices are reasonable. The service, however, can be downright terrible. I have been coming here for years. At first, breakfast tacos to go. Then, I started eating inside once in a while. Now, my friends and I come here regularly for happy hour and dinner. Sometimes the service is good. Most times the service is ok. And frequently (enough for me to update my review), the service is slow. Last night was the final straw for the update. And maybe they just need more staff during happy hour, who knows. But when you get cold food, requests are ignored, and you have to walk up to the front of the restaurant to get what you asked for because the server just outright dismissed bringing what was requested. I think that's a problem. It's happened more than once. I will still go here, but my expectations for good or even great service, no longer exist. The food is good, but expect so-so service. If you're type A personality, this place will drive you nuts.

Motorcycle M.

Yelp
Chicken Flautas were pretty dry and tasteless. The freshly made tortilla chips were very good. The salsa was good, The white salsa was ok but runny and soupy but had a nice kick. I loved the rice, not that dry parboiled crud from a barrel that most mexican restaurants serve! I forgot to delete the re friend beans, it was ok, but I shouldn't be eating smashed beans with lard and salt. Friendly staff. Prompt service. But one annoying factor made it not so nice. Two low life yahoos at a table both doing business after eating for along time and with both speaker phones on loud. Too bad no one in charge would ask them to go outside or to take it off speaker phone. I with I knew what business they were in so I would never ever use these inconsiderate, badly behaved people that they are.

Yelp
Ordered a takeout meal and margarita from Ramos on a Tuesday night. Food: roasted chicken enchilada in tomatillo sauce, tortilla soup, charro beans and rice on the side Drinks: frozen margarita 20oz This place wasn't really doing any curbside, or if they were it wasn't obviously. i called in and placed my order and upon arrival had to go inside to pay and retrieve it. I do wish the process was a bit smoother but there was only one girl working the front cash register, phone, and drinks so she was honestly doing the best she could. The marg was amazing even after my 6ish minute drive to a friends where I was eating and drinking. The food was still warm and the enchiladas were amazing. The tortilla soup lacked seasoning but would still give this place 5 stars and give them another try. They didn't give me any to-go silverware but luckily I didn't need it anyway. Will be back! Thanks Ramos!
google avatar

Katherine I.

Yelp
What another great experience with Ramos. WOW. I got the al pastor and al pastor quesadilla. I don't eat tortillas because of stomach issues, but I love the ingredients combined and can scrape everything out. SO GOOD. And then of course ordered a cup of their jalapeno ranch - better than Chuy's hands down. Last time I went I ordered a GD cup of it so I have it for my salads. Dreams come true. I mean seriously the service here is 11/10. I had a frozen margarita mixed with some strawberry thanks to Yosi's recommendation. If you get the chance to have her at your table, you are lucky. She is a gem. Thanks Yosi, see you next meal prep day, xo!

Yelp
Ramos is still the vest Texas anywhere in austin. I can't stay away. From the amazing service to the fresh food. They do not skimp!

Yelp
This place is so good. We hadn't eaten here in years and stopped in for lunch after swim lessons. My husband had chiliquiles with beef fajitas and really enjoyed them. Our kids shared a breakfast platter with pancakes, eggs, bacon and tortillas. I am on a Keto diet and has the filling of 1 barbacoa taco and the filling of one beef fajita one. They were both great! The fajita meat was nice and tender. They also have 3 salsas that are all excellent. You had to ask separately for the super spicy green one. This place is a find. They're big and spacious, almost never have a wait and the food and service is excellent.
google avatar

Alexandria P.

Yelp
Had a great experience at this place. We are from out of town and my family wanted to have a quick lunch so decided to go here. My aunt seems to be a regular since she knew the waiters names so had to check it out. We ordered chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce, the chicken flautas plate and also a order of queso. It was all soo good!! The tea was freshly brewed. The chile that comes with the chips was actually spicy!! Wow plus they were on it, No long wait. So overall yes we would go again and next time try the Combo fajitas it looked and smelled good.

Yelp
Visited Ramos for take-out last week and I think I have a new favorite plate... I got the chicken filet plate. It comes with your choice of sauce (I chose queso), rice and beans (refried, black or charro). The chicken filet was lightly battered, topped with queso and veggies (bell pepper, onions and mushrooms) and it was sooo delicious.

Andrew F.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat. The breakfast tacos are a staple for me and their white ranch jalapeño salsa is to die for. The make their tortillas fresh daily and have very good chips and salsa to boot. If you are in the area definitely stop by and support this local business.
google avatar

Kimberly K.

Yelp
Ramos is a small, family friendly Mexican restaurant in an unassuming strip mall off north loop 1 and howard. The prices are great, last time I got 7 tacos it was around $16 with tax. The ranchero sauce is so good, I use it instead of hot sauce. Their migas are the best amd just the right level of heat and the migas taco follows suit. They have menudo on the weekends and my son's grandma loves the machacado w potatoes for breakfast. Good chips and salsa, to boot. The tortiallas seem homemade but I haven't ever asked. Parking lot could use some work, ofte has potholes so beware! And gets pretty full! Great service, best mexican food option within a 5 mile range
google avatar

Mike A.

Yelp
Good Tex mex. Fast service. Ordered off the menu on yelp, was surprised when the charges were 33% higher! Still tipped though.
google avatar

Crystal F.

Yelp
A great home cooked Mexican meal! The food is good and the environment is so cozy and homey feeling!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was good and service was friendly. I did a pick up order and it was done really quick.
google avatar

Yelp
3 botched take out orders in a row over the last few months. This place has some of the best breakfast tacos in town, but for whatever reason they can't fulfill orders accurately anymore. The first time it was one missing carne guisada, the second time it was 3 missing tacos out of 9 and the latest time it was 6 chorizo tacos instead of bacon. I understand things happen, but this is becoming a pattern. Out of bacon and need to sub? No problem - just let me know. If you marked what the tacos were on the foil it would probably make it a lot easier to make sure everything was correct before people got their orders. I hope you folks can figure this out, because I want to keep coming here.

Yelp
This Ramos Tex-Mex location is just by a Shell station on the corner of N MoPac Expressway and Merrilltown Dr. This review is for breakfast. Food: Sausage and egg breakfast was decent - eggs cooked as ordered, beans were reasonably tasty, sausage patties were ok, and the home fries could have been cooked a tad longer. Homemade flour tortillas, but they were thin and lacked the fluffy goodness needed to properly sop up a runny egg. Breakfast tacos were good, and made with homemade tortillas. Service: Greeted at the door, and staff are friendly. Had to ask for refills, but otherwise food came out in good time and was fresh. Cost: For whatever reason, the huevos rancheros cost a dollar more than the sausage and egg breakfast - they both come with eggs, potato, beans, and choice of tortilla (flour or corn). I suppose the ranchero sauce costs $1? Sausage and egg breakfast, 4 tacos, a coffee and a tea ran us about $24 after tax. Overall: Not sure why the ladies room smelled like an ashtray, but it did. Parking outside is plenty. Takes cards. Has a full bar for those keen on a margarita.

Yelp
Breakfast tacos rock! I especially love their micas tacos and the carne guisada tacos all the way. The chips, salsa and quest are spot on, and they serve homemade tortillas! Yum!

Yelp
Place has gone down hill . Used to enjoy coming in and having some drinks last 2 times food was okay drinks tasted off .

Katie K.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Service is great, food is excellent, prices are good. And they are super accommodating to parties with kids. You have to try the Ranch/jalapeño dip. Plus the queso is delicious in its own right.

Yelp
We are from San Antonio and it's been a struggle finding good Tex med food ... till now. Very satisfied! Thank for the awesome service and food . Belly happy!
