Was feeling pizza all day and tried this place out because Sicilian style sounded really, really good.
I wanted to try the #4, but my wife is lactose intolerate and was not trying to destroy herself too much that evening. Plus, based on the Yelp food pics, the pepperoni pizza would give us all we needed for a pizza dinner.
As the OG pan pizza, the Sicilian pie is near and dear to my heart. This is coming from a kid who grew up with that vintage Pizza Hut pan crust recipe. And I am at such a place in my life that when I taste pizza that brings me right back to that magical za flavor of old, that most children fiend for, I gotta recognize it as something special.
Ranch's version of the institutional option was much better: Pleasantly greasy. The right amount of pepperoni that gave each bite a spicy finish. It was a great square pie with lovely, crispy edges. And the crust itself had that pan thickness to it, while still being somewhat crunchy - so it managed to be the best of both worlds.
Given the place's name, each order of pizza is served with a small helping of ranch dipping sauce. It helped balance the constant intake of salt, acid, and grease, but it wasn't my favorite version of ranch. It had more of a blue cheese consistency to it that would've almost worked more for a salad. A very small blemish.
My wife wasn't crazy about the pizza. It satisfied her appetite enough, but she thought the crust was on the doughy side.
Though a pizza like this did really well as cold leftovers the next day. That grease kept the quality up and we both were happy to finish off the remainder.
I came to this place on a larger visit from California, and am home now...but I think I left a bit of my foodie heart at Ranch PDX.
