Where to Find the Best Pizzas in Portland and Beyond

"The rebellious pizzaiolos at Ranch aren’t interested in doing anything conventionally. With their cheesy edges and crispy bottoms, the restaurant’s pies aren’t traditional Sicilian squares, and the restaurant’s eponymous ranch is an essential part of the experience. Still, these pies are hard to forget, with a pleasantly spongy crumb, thick slabs of pepperoni, and a garlicky dipping sauce best swabbed with a hunk of crust." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden, Rebecca Roland

Where to Find Thick, Cheesy Square Pizzas in Portland

"Ranch PDX owners Eric Wood and Richard Corey created their pizza to satisfy a nostalgic craving for the pizza dipped in ranch they ate as children at Roundtable and Papa’s Pizza. They modified these fast food pies for adult tastes by creating a cloud-like deep dish crust, topping it with aged mozzarella, and adding complex and spicy toppings for a more mature palate. The #4 with pork sausage and Calabrian chiles tastes complete when cooled with a generous dousing of Ranch PDX’s dill-forward ranch dressing. Ranch PDX has four other locations, including this spot in Nob Hill." - Rachel Pinsky

Portland’s Ranch Pizza Will Open a Second Restaurant in Northwest - Eater Portland

"Ranch Pizza, a Woodlawn pizzeria known for its thick, chewy crust and tangy sides of ranch dressing, will expand to Northwest Portland this fall. The menu is still under development, but if the original restaurant is any indication, the new pizzeria will specialize in its crispy, thick, bread-y pizzas, with toppings like pepperoni and basil. Ranch Pizza started as a delivery-only pop-up business before taking over the kitchen at Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock’s bar, Poison’s Rainbow, in March 2018. Three months later, Ranch Pizza opened its own restaurant, a small pizzeria next to the Tamale Boy on Dekum. After more than a year in the Kerns bar, Ranch left Poison’s Rainbow, presumably to pursue this second location. Ranch Northwest will open at 916 NW 21st Avenue." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
The pizza is very tasty! Not too greasy, crust is fluffy, and the ranch dressing is tasty. It's small inside so not a lot of seating area. I love that you can just order 1/4 of the pie - much more manageable portion size.

Jess Heyman

Google
Why be circle when you can be square?!? I was so happy to have lunch here! The dine in menu was simple giving you a choice of a whole or 1/4 pizza size. The 1/4 size is a personal size with two triangles of yummy, delicious Sicilian style pizza! The crust was by far the BEST I have ever eaten and I’m usually a thin crust gal! It had the perfect airy consistency with just the right amount of crunch along the outside. They make sure and give you plenty of toppings so each bite is the best! I also had their house salad as well which was absolutely fantastic! It is easily. Portion to share and tossed just right with dressing and toppings. They have a couple picnic tables for outside dining or seating inside as well. The employees were cheerful and added to the whole experience! They have canned beverages inside from water to hard cider and beer.

Stopped to have lunch while driving to Ashland and loved everything. First of all, the staff was very nice and friendly. The house salad was so good and fresh. We had 3 different kinds of pizzas and every single one was so good. The crust was thick but light and crispy. The breadsticks was also very good, I couldn’t stop eating it. We wish we had more time in Portland. Really recommend Ranch, if you come to Portland.

Google
This is a really small place, with only a very few tables -- mostly, I think it's a "call it in and pick it up" kind of place (and maybe "order online, then pick it up"). Pizza was great, though, and the guy working there (solo???) was very friendly, even while he seemed to be working his butt off! We ordered there, because we wanted to see how large the pizzas were before we ordered. My wife & I each got a "small" -- which is a "quarter pie" (as in "one-fourth of a large square pizza") -- and our respective pizzas were more than enough for our supper. Very tasty, too!!!

Lily J

Google
A must-try for lovers of thick, chewy, yeasted pizzas. We got the #4 with ricotta and the Hawaiian. Both were delicious and we loved that you can get quarters to try more! There were a few people coming in and out for takeout, but otherwise the store was pretty empty.

Google
The pizza was good and the people were amazing. I tried the Chicago style and vegetables and it did not disappointed

Google
This pizza is good. Not the best in town. But solid. Ranch is unique for a couple of reasons. 1. The pizza comes in a small or large square cut diagonally. 2. The pizza is deep dish... sort of 3. The pizza comes with a dipping container of ranch dressing. It takes around 15-20 minutes to cook, so call in advance. Also ask for it to be 'extra crispy'. I notice that if I don't, the crust is under cooked and a little gooey. The pizza comes stacked with premium toppings. The sauce is good, and the crust is unique... like an airy focaccia.

Google
Detroit style pizza. The square slices are lighter than air. The number 4 is delightful.

Yelp
The Veggie pizza is unique and very filling, with a nice touch of spice with the Calabrian Chillies. All the toppings went really well together which was a pleasant surprise considering that I normally don't go for Mushrooms or Kalamata olives. Definitely worth trying! Also each order comes with their side ranch, which was on point as well.

Yelp
Inside the Loro Cafe! Another Ranch expansion into the Montavilla neighborhood. Super friendly customer service and the pizza tastes the same across all locations!

Yelp
So, my first evening in Portland I had ranch PDX pepperoni pizza with extra pepperoni and ranch dressing. They were very generous and giving me extra dressing even though I paid for three they gave me three extra ones for free. The crust was delicious and the pepperoni was cooked to my liking, crispy. The ambience was understandably due to the small size of the place, but it was still nice to visit and the customer service was friendly. I would definitely come back again and try their pizza. Normally, I love thin crust, but I definitely could throw in this Detroit style pizza much more often due to the passion that they display with their damn pizza!

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Pizza is pretty forgiving. There are all types of approaches to pizza for varying tastes. Ranch PDX, is not to my taste. The pizza is very bready, more like a roll with only a little sauce, cheese, and topping. The sauce itself is pretty bland. Pizza shops are a dime a dozen. There are better choices.

Yelp
Went here since the bagel store ran out of my favorite bagel, order a quarter pizza. It was great, especially if you like a thick crust. Staff was very friendly and inviting. They also included homemade ranch with every quarter pizza. Would definitely come back again

Yelp
Square / Detroit style pizzas always catch my attention, so of course my curiosity led me to Ranch pizza. Ordered ahead for pickup before the wind came through, and it was ready on time. Even with a bit of a drive, the slices were still hot. Really appreciated that they boxed the order, even with only 3 slices. For those not hungry enough to commit to the full sheet of squares, the quarter slices are the way to go and a great way to have a pizza tasting. Both the cheese and #4 were well cooked (crispy on the edge but still had a soft middle). I wish the #4 had a bit more sauce to balance the sausage and ricotta, but it was still a party for my taste buds. If I order again the next time I'm in town, I may need to add my own Mike's Hot Honey to the slices. Will buy again!

Yelp
Wednesday 9/20/23 While doing pizza searches (via Yelp) for my upcoming Portland trip, I found ranch pdx which is known to serve good Detroit style pizza and I was ready for it. I got a pepperoni whole pie ($28.50) for takeout. The pizza was very underwhelming and overpriced ($28.50 for normal size pizza square slices is crazy). Had family and friends that tried it and they were underwhelmed as well: stating how greasy the pizza was. The ranch wasn't anything special and was average at best. I really wanted to like the pizza but couldn't. The high expectations I had completely fell flat. I personally wouldn't get it again and would rate it as the worst pizza I had in Portland during my visit.

Yelp
Pizza and beer on point. The place was clean and plenty of seating. We went on a week day and was served immediately.
google avatar

Rolling Along ..

Yelp
This place has very nice pizzas in what they call the 'Detroit Style.' This is a high rise dough and excellent sauce and cheese. They don't sell pizza by the slice, but the equivalent is a small personal pizza that is cooked fresh for you. It is a very nice place.
google avatar

Yelp
This food was sooo gooooooodddddd. The breadsticks were the perfect amount of garlic and butter, and crispy and soft. Delicious! Then we had the pepperoni and the #4. Both so delicious! The crust was so crispy and soft and delicious. Everything was so delicious. Plus they came with ranch which was incredible .... I heart ranch.
google avatar

Kayce C.

Yelp
Event staff is rude and condescending. They weren't willing to help recommend an order for 70 people. They wouldn't even tell me how many pizzas they would recommend if there was 4 people at a table.
google avatar

Ernesto G.

Yelp
Pizza was tasty. Great ingredients and sauce. Came with ranch! Nice causal spot for a solid experience before a timbers game.
google avatar

Kamron H.

Yelp
I neither like square pizza nor ranch, but this place converted me to both! Pizza here is really good and you'll end up having an extra slice even if you weren't planning on it. If I hadn't ate at tilamook right before I would've had a whole pie instead of just 2 slices

Yelp
I got the Hawaiian. It was ok. Some good qualities, some bad. - The ranch sauce was really, really great. Light and fresh, but also real flavor. I dunno. You could tell they make it from scratch though. I'd be tempted to return to just get some breadsticks and dip 'em in the ranch. - The dough was pretty good and soft, with a nice crisp on the outside. I would have preferred a little more outer crisp though. - There was hardly any sauce, and the flavor didn't come through. Same with the cheese. I think a Hawaiian slice should still largely be a normal slice, but with those Hawaiian flavors sprinkled on, not featured. Here the Hawaiian flavors were really featured. - The jalapenos really had a huge kick to them that I think was too much. Lots of seeds still in 'em. - The worst part was the bacon lardons. I'm not sure what a lardon is or what it's supposed to taste like, but it was bad. Very crunch. No chew or give to it. In an unpleasant way. And it had a strong charred/burnt flavor to it. Maybe they overcooked 'em by accident.

Yelp
Was feeling pizza all day and tried this place out because Sicilian style sounded really, really good. I wanted to try the #4, but my wife is lactose intolerate and was not trying to destroy herself too much that evening. Plus, based on the Yelp food pics, the pepperoni pizza would give us all we needed for a pizza dinner. As the OG pan pizza, the Sicilian pie is near and dear to my heart. This is coming from a kid who grew up with that vintage Pizza Hut pan crust recipe. And I am at such a place in my life that when I taste pizza that brings me right back to that magical za flavor of old, that most children fiend for, I gotta recognize it as something special. Ranch's version of the institutional option was much better: Pleasantly greasy. The right amount of pepperoni that gave each bite a spicy finish. It was a great square pie with lovely, crispy edges. And the crust itself had that pan thickness to it, while still being somewhat crunchy - so it managed to be the best of both worlds. Given the place's name, each order of pizza is served with a small helping of ranch dipping sauce. It helped balance the constant intake of salt, acid, and grease, but it wasn't my favorite version of ranch. It had more of a blue cheese consistency to it that would've almost worked more for a salad. A very small blemish. My wife wasn't crazy about the pizza. It satisfied her appetite enough, but she thought the crust was on the doughy side. Though a pizza like this did really well as cold leftovers the next day. That grease kept the quality up and we both were happy to finish off the remainder. I came to this place on a larger visit from California, and am home now...but I think I left a bit of my foodie heart at Ranch PDX.

Yelp
I'm hooked! I got the #4. It was delicious, crispy corners, and a little heat. I also got the breadsticks. I rarely see focaccia done to its fullest potential in restaurant settings since it takes time. It was great, salted properly, bubbled and crispy corners. I'll go again!
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Its good pizza, but there a some important aspects about it that don't thrill me. I've tried 3 different whole pizzas now. The bread to cheese and topping ratio is too much bread for my liking. The grease is copious. See pictures I've attached to the review for bread/toppings scale and the grease factor. The 2 paper towels shown, the 1 on the right had 1 piece on top of it, the 1 on the left I lightly dabbed 2 small pieces with.
google avatar

Catherine L.

Yelp
Service was friendly. There wasn't much seating space. It wasn't an issue for us this Sunday afternoon but I imagine during busy times there could easily be a wait for seating indoors. Just a heads up. Onto the food: I've had many pizzas in my life but this was potentially one of the best pizzas of my life. We especially loved the current special which is the jalepeno popper pizza. I'm still daydreaming about eating it for lunch earlier today and am already plotting to make another visit to order more. Loved the texture and crispiness and the mix of flavors. The breadsticks were yummy, with a generous amount of pieces. Garlic-y goodness Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Jin K.

Yelp
My goodness sakes, this pizza was fire. So once again going back to Tacoma washington, I decided to stop here for a couple of sizes of pizza. So the ranch sauce they provide, I suggest asking for two sides of ranch. This ranch sauce was the best. It was extremely good. Yes you have to dip your slice of pizza into the ranch. It will change your life lol. Overall the pizza was fantastic and yes I devoured all 4 slices in my car haha. I really wish they had a location over where I'm at but that would defeat the whole purpose of calling it Ranch PDX lol. I'm definitely coming back here probably about 50 times more.
google avatar

Theresa C.

Yelp
This would have to one of our favorite pizzas. Ordered online for pickup, since they don't take phone orders. Or at least no one answers the phone. Their pizza dough has a hint of garlic. Which is so good. Loads of pepperoni, Such perfection. In every bite. Try them, you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Liv C.

Yelp
This is SERIOUS pizza! I'm not a huge fan of Detroit-style pizza, but Ranch at least offers a bit of diversity to the crowded Portland pizza scene. Slices are heated individually upon ordering so I ended up waiting 15-20 minutes for my pizza to be prepared, and unfortunately found it to be VERY heavy and greasy, though definitely flavorful. The side of ranch was also good. Ultimately not my favorite pizza experience, but definitely a good option for people who enjoy Detroit-style pizza.
google avatar

Deborah N.

Yelp
The pizza was great, I came from California to taste it. But the radicchio Cesar stole the show. We could not get enough of it. My daughter and I talk about it all the time. I will be going back the next time I'm in Portland. I also enjoyed my non alcoholic beer it was light and refreshing.
google avatar

Jonathan Y.

Yelp
The pizza was ready pretty quickly only had to wait about 25 minutes upon ordering and came right in and got it fresh as well as two of the Sicilian sodas Blood Orange and Limon. The gentleman was super nice and friendly at the register and the pizza was nice and crispy. The Hawaiian is really good and loaded with toppings as well as the other flavor we got.
google avatar

Sasha A.

Yelp
Best pizza in PDX! definitely pricey, but it's awesome & filling pizza so it's worth it. If you are eating it there, it took awhile for the pizza to come & I had to go inside and check-in with the cashier to see how we would know the pizza is coming out. He said he would bring it out, but he didn't and I had to go back in to get the pizza. But the pizza was so good I forgave the service. Not too much seating room at this location other than a few tables inside and 2 outside.
google avatar

Claudia C.

Yelp
I love Ranch so much! I can't wait for their Beaverton location to open so I can eat it more. I ordered the pepperoni and the #4 pizza. I especially love the corner pieces because they're extra crispy, I could eat the whole pizza to myself. I'm glad I found this style pizza here.
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
What's Detroit style pizza you ask? Go find out. It's hella good. My friend and I got a whole pizza and it was definitely too much for the two of us but omfg it was so good. It was loaded with aged mozarella, red sauce, sausage, ricotta, calabrian chilies, pecorino romano and basil. I highly recommend the # 4 pizza. Honestly looking at the picture I took of it makes me salvage. Luckily they have 5 locations around Portland!

Patsy S.

Yelp
Order the prime rib. The ranch of course for the salad dressing excellent service from Jeff.

Jackie J.

Yelp
YUM. This place is a true gem and we can't wait to try their other locations! Hot, fresh, thick crust with a generous amount of toppings and a delicious salad. The staff was nice and helpful with the menu items and options. Just a low-key, casual pizza place that serves up big deliciousness! By far my new favorite place!

David R.

Yelp
Everything was bomb pizza was great fresh cut pineapple what more could u ask for and homemade ranch definitely a gem
google avatar

Kyle W.

Yelp
Delicious pizza! The crust is light and airy, but has a good crunch to it! Toppings were plentiful and the sauce was awesome! Cute little hole-in-the-wall shop. Wait time was totally fine for fresh out of the oven pizza!
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Best Detroit-style pizza in the Portland/Vancouver area. Perfectly cooked and they use high-end ingredients. Great vibe and a decent good location! If you live in WA, make the short drive over the I-5 bridge and enjoy. This destination pizza shop is on the road map to Flavortown.
google avatar

Kyle C.

Yelp
Sheesh. This joint really knows how to make a pizza. I really was not expecting much when looking at photos of the pizza but my goodness! So crisp but fluffy and airy at the same time. The pepperoni definitely got a lil kick to it-- a lil spice that I didn't hint until I had some leftovers I had toasted. This joint is absolutely in my top 5 pizza joint lists in portland.
google avatar

Lanie S.

Yelp
Portland Pizza Taste Test #4 I originally got it to go, but then it started down-pouring! my cheese slice was square and cut into two triangles! definitely Detroit style and mostly fluffy bread, almost like focaccia. not a lot of cheese and it didn't seem melted? for 7.50 a piece i would definitely mark this one as a special treat. but i will be back to try their special, the whole #4 6/10 for Ranch PDX today
google avatar

Anthony P.

Yelp
I saw this place a few months ago when I was up in Portland for a wedding. Fast forward to this past weekend and I found myself back in Portland for business and I was itching to try their Detroit-style pizza. I ordered their quarter pepperoni ($8) and quarter Hawaiian ($9) pizzas (basically a large slice) and marveled at how affordable it was. Both slices came out in about 10 minutes. Pro-tip, you can order online so you don't have to wait when you get there. Pepperoni - aged mozzarella, red sauce, pepperoni, pecorino romano, basil - What's not to love about this? It was stacked with crispy pepperoni and cooked to perfection. Hawaiian - aged mozzarella, red sauce, bacon lardons, fresh pineapple, roasted jalapeno, red onion, pecorino romano, basil - Lots of things going on with this one and while I enjoyed, it was too busy for my own tastes. I'd probably custom order just a bacon lardons and pineapple pizza in the future. The crust for both were less dense than what I've gotten at other Detroit-style pizza places, but I found that I liked it a lot better that way. Staff was super friendly and the location is really casual with limited seating. This is a place that you go for either takeout or a quick stop. I loved it and will be back again!
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Ordered through Uber eats, very tasty, very fast. First time trying Detroit style pizza... I would order again
google avatar

Jen E.

Yelp
It was ok. A bit over priced for the quay of food They weren't happy about no tip either. We walked up to order, picked up our own food, and cleared our own table, just don't understand why we need to leave tips.
google avatar

Alexandria C.

Yelp
This pizza is an absolute MUST if you're visiting Portland. The Menu is so simple yet all you need. We ordered the pepperoni pizza which was perfect! They put loads of pepperoni on the pizza which I personally loved because usually I feel like pizza parlors don't put enough pepperoni. Each pizza pie comes with 2 sides of ranch (hence the name!). I definitely recommend

Brenda J.

Yelp
Holy Moly! This pizza is amazing! I got the cheese and it came with basil on top. The sauce is fantastic and the ranch dressing is the best I've ever had! So glad I got the large tub of ranch to go!
google avatar

Aaron C.

Yelp
Great food, awesome service and good ambiance. If you're looking for something that will satisfy your tastebuds with pizza then RanchPDX is it. I got half pepperoni added jalapeños, half veggie turned into combo by adding sausage, pepperoni. Man this hit the spot. I've been dying for a pizza with popping flavor like this. Pan crust was great, pepperoni had that great unhealthy yummy grease coming off it, the Kalamata olives gave this combo a great flavor I would have never thought could come alive in my mouth. Check out the pics. You'll not regret eating here. Matter of fact I'll regret it if you don't. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
The ranch is yummy and why you'd go. Menu pizza options are simple and maybe too limited (unless it's like in n out and has a secret menu I need to know about). Your 4ish basics and a special option that was unavailable at the time of order. Quarter is two slices and plenty. While I do love cold pizza more than warm, I'm not sure this would be a viable option. It's a bit fluffy/focaccia-y and might turn soggy. Wouldn't know bc I downed the two! Indoor and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Dylan S.

Yelp
Just like the first human came up the idea and/or discovered fire, Ranch PDX came up with a enhancement to make pizza a whole lot better and tastier. FOOD First off, the portion itself is pretty good. The quarter sized pizza got me to feel very satisfied. The toppings itself was also fantastic as well. The #4 was pretty meaty while the mozzarella on top struck a great balance of saltiness. The red sauce on it was freshly made and it was a cherry on top. The Hawaiian pizza was pretty decent as well. I personally don't like Hawaiian pizza, but my partner really enjoyed her slice. Definitely a solid 5 star. The ranch they provided are homemade and you can definitely taste the extra sweetness of it. Dipping the pizza in it will never disappoint you. SERVICE The service itself was pretty decent. Seems like the entire restaurant was tan by 2 people so they seem to be all over the place. Even at that, the host was able to get all orders and bringing them out at a reasonable time The restaurant itself it's pretty small, highly recommend to order for a takeout or eat it outside! ALL IN ALL, a dainty little pizza place that truly packs a punch. Solid solid pizza and I can't wait to come back more often!
google avatar

Nick H.

Yelp
Very good pizza. We tried the pepperoni, the #4 meat lovers, and the specialty pickle. The full pizzas are about $31 each and cut into 9 squares (5x5in each), focaccia/sponge bread crust, with great quality ingredients and taste. Each pizza comes with house made quality ranch for dipping.

Brittney N.

Yelp
this has quickly become my favorite pizza in portland! if you like more of a thick crust, this pizza is for you. the crust is phenomenal. we order a pepperoni with mushrooms and the flavor is incredible. you have to try their pizza!
google avatar

Bob W.

Yelp
Great people who always are very nice to me when I go in and the bread sticks are great
google avatar

Juan S.

Yelp
It had been a while since I had tried some Portland pizza and from all the options, I chose Ranch since it was close. The music the employees were playing was banging which I appreciated even tho I can guarantee it wouldn't be to most people's taste lol. But the workers were king and provided great service. I ordered the Hawaiian which came with a few things I didn't care for but that's entirely my fault for not analyzing the menu further. However, everything worked together wonderfully and their ranch is amazing as it should be considering the word is in their name. My girlfriend got the pepperoni and it looked delicious. My pizza was great, she said her's was great... I had a great experience here and would definitely return.
google avatar

Jim A.

Yelp
Crispy edges and a boat load of pepperoni, the essentials to good pizza. They do it right. The Radicchio Caesar was great but could use a touch more salt to combat the bitterness. Can't wait for come back and try some of their specialty pizzas.
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
Definitely some of the better pizza I have had since I have been living in Portland. Good pizza dough as well as fresh ingredients. No frills and service was ok but I will definitely be back and you have to give it a try Yelpers. So let it be said... So let it be EATEN!!

Jason H.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the #4? Square. I was skeptical because the price at first but it was both quantity and quality that made it worth it. Already recommended it to others and I don't even live in Portland.
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
Well, I finally made it and in a city that has a long list of great Pizza joints, this has to be one of my favorite in Portland. The focaccia style deep dish crust was light, flavorful and was enigmatic of what this town is: unique. Simplicity at its finest- bread, sauce, cheese and really good pepperoni. Holy crap, why did I just do a quarter and why did I wait so long. The ranch is other worldly and reminded me why dipping bread into the creamy dressing is such a magical experience. Thank you RANCH for making such a delightful pizza that is already begging me to leave the suburbs as soon as I am able to partake in all you have to offer.
