Where To Eat Dinner After Drinking At SIPS - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Bar Ly is a great SIPS spot for two reasons - the crowds don’t get as crazy since it’s not Center City and it’s within a couple blocks of the incredible Burmese food at Rangoon. Don’t worry about making a reservation - you can almost always walk in with a big group of people and get a table. Order a few more beers, a bunch of orders of thousand layer bread, and at least one plate of coconut-curry-covered jungle chicken." - sydney mcelwee

"The only Burmese restaurant in town, Rangoon dishes up spicy, coconut-laden food at reasonable prices from its Chinatown premises. Expect lots of garlic and ginger, as well as a tea leaf salad, coconut shrimp, and deeply flavorful fish noodle soup that set the restaurant apart. Rangoon is a unique experience in a town where Thai food is more common, and also a great option for takeout." - Joel Balsam

First time ever tasting Burmese style food. It was very delicious experience. Food offered great flavours. The two of us split a salad, spring rolls, chicken and a dessert. We were full and happy by the end. Definitely recommend anyone to give them a try.

I was really excited to try this restaurant - the portion sizes are good, the service is excellent and friendly! However, I wish there was more spice and picked mustard greens to add more dimension to the tofu noodle dish. It wasn’t spicy at all even when requested. I loved the atmosphere and the fact it is family owned.

I picked up a green tea salad and the Chicken (shan khaukswel). Not only was it so delicious, the portions are so generous. I have more than half of the chicken dish left, and am sooo looking forward to having it tomorrow for lunch! This restaurant is so authentic and the owner is so sweet and invested in the food.

One of my favourite new-ish restaurants in the city! The green tea leaf salad is one of the best dishes I’ve had this year - very punchy and unexpected flavours and texture. They have some really delightful and substantial vegetarian dishes (my current favourite is the eggplant). The owner is lovely and the space has a laid back casual vibe. Rangoon is quickly becoming one of my regular go-to spots.

Delicious food and excellent service. The mohinga soup and green tea salad were both unique and memorable in the best sense and the Shan chicken was tasty and filling. Warm and personal service was the cherry on top. Looking forward to our next visit.

Google
Delicious and great smelling food! Fair prices too. The green papaya salad was peanutty goodness and the coconut noodle soup had tender chicken and a beautiful coconut flavour. I want to come back to try more!

It is really hard to go wrong when you come to Rangoon. The staff is just so delightful and attentive. And the food is oozing with authenticity. My friend has been taking me here for years, and every time he’s back in town. It is the first stop for him. I’m vegetarian so there are fewer options, but they are such delicious options. My personal favourite has always been the mushrooms and tofu. They are seasoned with this amazing buttery goodness that I literally cannot describe. If you have never been, I think it’s time for you to give it a try and see how Burmese food is different from traditional Chinese food .

We went last night. We had the green tea leaf salad (mmm so crunchy and tasty), the coconut chicken (so soft) and the eggplant. All good choices. We were very happy with everything. I don't think I've ever been to a Burmese restaurant before here, but if they are all like Rangoon, I'll definitely be going more often!

Yelp
Arranged to meet a friend from business school who used to live in Ottawa and have been living in Europe (Paris and London) for close to 30 years and his mother who I also know at the restaurant in August. This is one of my local gems. My friend have some Michelin starred restaurants near his office and some he goes to for business lunches so I went for Burmese since that is harder to find with the other Burmese restaurant I ate at in San Francisco. We ordered starters: spring rolls, chickpea bites and my favourite Green Tea Leaf salad. We each ordered a main so Shan noodles, coconut shrimp and the coconut noodle soup, but we dined more family style, splitting everything. I brought a nice bottle of french champagne I had, which you can bring with a $10 corkage and I knew they did not have a sparkling wine on the menu. The wine list there is fairly basic so BYO is a good option if you have a group that likes a decent bottle of wine with your meal since you can get ones for $20-25. I know some nice ones at LCBO at that range that well go well with the food such as J. Lohr Cabinet Sauvignon or NZ Oyster Bay Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio and I can sometimes find one on sale for under $20 or for sparkling a Prosecco or Crémant de Bourgogne My friends really like Rangoon and they would go back there again. As I said this is one of the ones I consider my locals..

Yelp
Great spices and mix of ingredients. Overall, it's a bit on the lower salt end but the mix of spices are very unique and tasty. I have only ever ate at their Gloucester location so I had the lunch menu only before. Coming to to Somerset location for dinner means a larger menu selection. My friend and i had the combo for two. It consisted of 1 Burmese spring roll, a choice of lentil or coconut soup, chicken in Burmese spices with rice, and Burmese tea. A very unique dining experience. Definitely recommend it. The new location is more spacious and nice.

Yelp
I visited here last time I was in Ottawa and decided to return. They've since changed locations but it's a very similar vibe. Still the same really authentic Burmese food, which is kinda hard to find in North America regardless (unless you're in San Fran). I had the green tea leaf salad and the lentil soup. Both clean and delicious. They told me it would be an hour wait because they'd just gotten a lot of orders. I appreciated that. I arranged to order and then left for a drink down the street and came back. They don't seem to have a liquor license anymore. Perhaps they're waiting for it? The other location has wine and beer, if I recall. Very family owned business in terms of customer service. The owner is sweet and humble.

Yelp
Burmese food is delicious and easy to love, and yet much harder to find, and utterly different from all other Southeast Asian. Both soups and salads are very hearty. The green tea salad is a classic, full of crunchy roasted baby chickpeas. Rangoon's version has romaine. Ginger salad is my favorite, also with delightful crunchy bits. The fish soup is a rich purée with a few noodles at the bottom. The proprietor is very warm and talkative, and she will help you sort out the menu. Definitely eat here. Among other reasons, Rangoon is in a nice new location, but off the main drag, so they could use the support. If interesting places like this go out of business, Ottawa will have nothing to eat but doner kebaps.

Yelp
Loved it. Beautiful service in a gentle manner. The food is subtle and delicious. The Beef (Ame Thar Hinn) was so tender you didn't need a knife. Subtle delicious flavours with crunchie veggies and a huge helping of Jasmine rice. The Shan Khauk Swe chicken was so tasty and tender with lovely noodles and sauce. The traditional Green Tea Leaf Salad (Laphet Thoke) was crunchy and tasty; subtle again. I am definitely returning. Loved it.

Yelp
Meh! We took an Uber to Chinatown to explore and find some lunch. We love doing that in big cities. We all ordered off the lunch menu. All four of us ordered the lunch Bazun Hinn. One shrimp with rice, one shrimp with noodles, one beef with noodles, and one chicken with noodles. After taking our order the server came back to tell us they only had enough noodles for 2 of the lunches so one switched to rice. The noodles were nothing special- just long egg noodles, no sauce. The veggies were fresh but the dish just didn't seem to go together. For what it's worth, the two who got shrimp with rice loved it so maybe it was the plain noodles that brought down the experience for the other two of us.

Yelp
Loved this amazing Burmese place on Somerset! Tail is such a wonderful owner and a great conversationalist. We tried the spicy chickpea dish and spicy chicken noodle. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants to try and new cuisine!

Yelp
I had the chick pea vegetarian dish (I forgot the exact name) and loved every bite. Great service, can't wait to go back

Yelp
I went here in December 2017 so this review is a bit dated... delicious food at an excellent price!! Me and my mother went after 3pm so we were the only guests, nonetheless they offered all options on the dinner and lunch menu to us. Thank you for the terrific hospitality!

Joanna S.

Yelp
Went here the day after it opened in its new location in Chinatown! So excited to see the Zen Kitchen location being brought back to life. Everything was fantastic - the food delicious, the service was welcoming and my five year old left with a full belly. We tried a variety of yummy things and plan to return soon to try a host of more yummy things. Many options for vegetarians, vegans, GF, etc.

Yelp
My family was excited to try a new cuisine - we like a variety of Asian cuisines but had never tried Burmese. Unfortunately none of the dishes lived up to our expectations. The spring rolls were bland and oily, with a bland sauce. The green tea leaf salad ("Our signature dish") was at least interesting, but not to my taste. My curried eggplant was just dull, and my partner's coconut shrimp were overcooked and in a sauce that tasted too much like coconut milk with lots of oil and not enough other flavours to add interest. The "naan bread" was a microwaved supermarket version. On the positive, our young son (8) really liked the curried pork, and the stir-fry beef was very tender (but very oily). The service was fine, and I enjoyed sitting on the patio overlooking the street. But at $108 plus tip for 4 mains, 1 salad and 1 order of spring rolls, we had expected better.
