How to Spend 24 Fabulous Hours in Richmond, Va. - Eater DC

"Oysters are a fabulous option in Richmond, and they come straight from the source at Rappahannock Oyster Company’s own restaurant. The big beautiful bar in the center is an excellent place for a crisp glass of white wine and a platter of oysters, caviar, or ceviche." - Missy Frederick

"Oysters and Cocktails in Richmond Seafood is the star at Rappahannock Restaurant in downtown Richmond. This is the third venture of the Croxton family, which has played a major role in the Chesapeake Bay oyster resurgence. The restaurant's raw bar features four oyster varieties, clams, and caviar; Virginia fish and meat round out the menu. Cocktails are given similar reverence and made with fresh, seasonal ingredients to complement the food. Should you wish to go straight to the source, the Merroir tasting room is an hour from Richmond and overlooks the Rappahannock River where the oysters are grown."

I was in Richmond for 36 hours, so I had one night to experience the local food scene, which I heard good things about. I chose Rappahannock for my only dinner in town. Kate was my server and she was so friendly and attentive. I asked her a few questions about the menu and she answered me with honesty, which I appreciated. I decided to try two of each of the local oysters, the Smoked Fish Dip, and the Little Gem Wedge. The oysters were really delicious; fresh and cold served with both the mignonette and cocktail sauce. The Rappahannock River Oysters were exceptionally tasty. The fish dip followed and that was great too; they definitely give you a healthy portion of it as well. The Little Gem Wedge was really nice with the lettuce being very fresh. After all that, Kate made a convincing argument to try the blueberry shortcake; also fantastic! The hand whipped cream and blueberries were delicious and I had to force myself not to finish it as I was already stuffed to the gills! The restaurant itself is casual and fairly loud, but it’s good for groups and individuals (has a large bar) and seems it would be kid-friendly.

We sat at the bar for dinner around 6:30 on a Saturday evening. The food and drinks were delicious, but the service wasn't great. We spent a lot of time waiting. I understand that bartenders are busy, but maybe they could staff a third person behind the bar.

I had a good experience at Rappahannock Restaurant. We kinda had to get the Rappahannock oysters. They had a very good flavor. The taste had a nice little bit of sweetness to them. The cocktail sauce was a perfect complement to them as well. I had the grilled octopus. It is easy to poorly prepare octopus, but they absolutely knocked it out of the park. If there is a better octopus dish in 1,000 miles, I would be very surprised. It had the perfect amount of char, the perfect seasoning, and the perfect level of tenderness and chewiness. Seriously it was amazing. We had the s'mores tart dessert. The brownie wasn't great, but the chocolate sauce had a delightful saltiness to it. I also found the marshmallow to really bring it home for me. The price was higher than what you will pay up and down Broad, but in my opinion it is well worth it. You are paying for high quality seafood. I wish the wait staff were a little more attentive, but I think the vibe they go for is more upscale where they let you have a conversation as opposed to bugging you every five minutes. I would recommend the Rappahannock Restaurant and return.

Google
I had a nice time at Rappahannock The ceviche was absolutely delicious—fresh and full of flavor. The gumbo was tasty but a bit small in portion size. The restaurant has a family-friendly atmosphere with a lot of kids, making it a lively and casual place to dine. Overall, a nice spot for fresh seafood and a relaxed meal.

Service: I sat at the bar. It took about 5 minutes for the bartender to acknowledge me. She put a glass of water down with a menu. No greeting or warmth. I asked a couple of questions about a menu item. She gave me the "we rotate our menu constantly" response without actually listening to the question and realizing I'm a returning customer. I ordered and that was that. The rest of my meal was similarly cold. I had to request the check. She was not attentive at all. Bartender that worked the night of May 4. Food: I ordered the scallop dish with "rice grits". The scallops were perfectly cooked, but we're VERY gritty. The rice grits is a cute idea, but it fails in execution. It wants to be a risotto so bad. It tastes fine, but it's lacking when paired with the scallops.

Google
Great experience. I’ve been here a couple times before. I Always come with open mind regarding what I’m having for dinner. This evening, I sat at the bar and let the bartender recommend an entrée. She recommended the scallops, which were well complemented by arugula salad with cauliflower and golden raisins. The mixed greens salad was much larger than I originally anticipated and also delicious. I will continue to make my way down dinner menu one (or two) entrées at a time!

Best oysters, yummy cocktails, and great service. Definitely a favorite when in town.

Google
Truly enjoyed my meal great food in atmosphere friendly and professional staff great menu and selections. I truly enjoyed oysters on a half shell my entree was wonderful as well hanger steak. I travel 90% of the time due to work and not always you find a restaurant that is hitting on all cylinders. I would like to say outstanding job to all the staff of the establishment. I would like to especially think Breanne she knowledgeable of all aspects of the restaurant and menu items and drink items as well and very informful on the chef selection items of the day.💯💯

Yelp
So I wish I had remembered to take a picture of the cocktail menu because I can't find it online anywhere. I had a delightful bourbon based drink, called Pear and Back Again that had four roses bourbon with ginger syrup, lemon, and plum bitters. It was incredibly smooth and too easy to drink really lol. I will say in my search for the menu Rappahannock needs to update some of their contact sites because there's some seriously old menus out there. My family and I have been to Rappahannock a handful of times over the last couple years. We're not big oyster fans boat we dig the smoky (grill smoke not cigarette) vibe and really enjoy the seafood options. If you're noise sensitive, I highly recommend asking for the back corner when you reserve a table. Service is always friendly and usually paced well unless it's a theater night. Every time we go, it's always been crowded so I think it must be doing something right. For appetizers, we ordered ceviche and the seafood gumbo. Both had a nice little kick to it and were delicious. The ceviche was fresh and bright while the gumbo had a subtle richness to it and just the right amount of kick. It does linger a bit while you're waiting for your main course though but I'm a lightweight when it comes to spice. We all enjoyed our entrées of the grilled octopus, the Branzino and the pan seared rockfish. All are on the small side serving wise which was fine for me, but some might find it lacking in size to be filling, particularly at these prices ($42 for the Branzino). My husband devoured the apple pie with butterscotch bourbon sauce The sauce was pretty incredible. I could have taken a jar of that home and just had with vanilla ice cream all week. Might need to make my own version.... We also enjoyed the smores tart which was unique and satisfying for a meal ender. My son thought some kind of crème anglaise with it would have been nice but we all likes it.

Yelp
I had an incredible experience last night at Rappahannock. We were a group of seven gathering for a family dinner. I noticed a lot of other big groups here. If you're a group of 6+ wanting to make a reservation, you'll need to call ahead. Rappahannock is located on Grace st. and 4th st. There is parking nearby, but since we lived pretty close we just walked. Service is amazing here. They're super attentive and kind. They're great with big groups. We started off with some drinks and oysters. I absolutely adored my Grace St. Spritz. It was so delicious. Everyone else loved their cocktails. Their bartender is very talented. We also got a round of oysters, both raw and baked. They were very yummy. For mains, my Mom and I ordered the ceviche and scallops to share. I loved the sweet potato crisps in the ceviche. I wish it was heavier on the lime, but it was tasty. We really enjoyed our scallops. We were obsessed with the rice it came on. My fiance ordered the burger and liked it. His Mom got the octopus and it was, unfortunately, overcooked. Her dad adored the fish he got. Our friend loved her mixed greens salad. They have three gender neutral single stall bathrooms here. Things are a bit on the pricier side, but if you're looking for a place for big groups with amazing cocktails and nice seafood, I recommend checking Rappahannock out.

Yelp
Cocktails | appetizer | chill Cocktails - We had great cocktails at this location. They had a nice menu and a really impressive selection of liquor. I highly recommend stopping by for a drink during happy hour or to start off your night. Appetizer - We stopped in for a quick appetizer, which was chicken-based, and it was perfect. It was a great way to start the night. The chicken dish was crispy and relatively filling, which was just what we wanted since we were only planning to have a small plate while exploring that area of Richmond. Chill - The restaurant has a pretty chill vibe overall. The bar is the centerpiece of the restaurant, which is quite interesting. It takes up around 50% of the seating area and is located in the direct center of the restaurant. The rest of the restaurant is surrounded by tables that are equally distributed from the front, the middle, the side, to the back of the restaurant. So really, the iconic part is the bar, and we just sat there and had a quick bite, which was awesome.

Yelp
Had a work dinner here. The place smells phenomenal. Quaint & cheek. The Brussels sprouts were not burnt & the oysters were perfect. I'd rec a selection w all to try. The rock fish was less white fish than expected but still cooked & seasoned right w dainty but hearty carrots . Our server was lovely and was just right for the occasion. The Chardonnay was flavorful & not buttery just as asked for. I would highly recommend this place if ur downtown or have a chance to be!

Yelp
Had a solid last minute dinner at Rappahannock tonight! Mom said she was craving seafood & had been wanting to try this place so off we went. Light crowd for a Friday night but it was a bit later. We decided to do several shares from the chill/raw bar. This included a dozen oysters, the crab salad, & the scallop crudo. All were tasty! My favorite part of the oysters was the delicious mignonette sauce. Our server Peyton was also great!

Yelp
While it's a little smoky inside due to their wood burning oven, their overall vibe is open, intimate, and great for a first date or meetup for all fans of cocktails and seafood. There wasn't much on the menu for vegetarian or non-seafood eaters, so be sure you're coming hungry for some sea fare. The bartender was new but super nice and attentive. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is due to the lackluster taste of the drink. It was missing that classic margarita taste and overall missed the mark considering the price point.

Yelp
Went by myself on a casual weekday night. Sat at a high table overlooking the open kitchen, which was an added plus since it kept me entertained. Had half a dozen oysters as starter, nothing to complain about. They were fresh and tasted great. As a main I ordered the grilled octopus which was cooked perfectly. The sauce and potatoes gave it a nice fresh touch. Would love to go again and try some of their cocktails.

Yelp
Visiting the area for the day and had a great late lunch (4:00 pm) here. I can't say enough excellent things about their food and service staff. I sat at the bar (which is huge) and Ray, who was super nice gave me excellent recommendations including their oysters and steamed muscles. David shucked them perfectly and very friendly. I was excited to learn there is another location at the Wharf in DC.

Yelp
I highly recommend Rappahannock, the food and service are stellar. The waiter was so professional I felt I was in New Orleans, where people take their jobs seriously. He made our dinner experience more enjoyable. The scallops were cooked perfectly, warm in the middle but not undercooked . We finished w peanut butter pie, which I woke up thinking about! The tables are small, but made for a more intimate dinner

Lisa ..

Yelp
Hold onto your hats -- this place is not cheap, but the shellfish is sea-briny fresh, the fish is cooked expertly, the drinks menu is carefully selected to highlight the food, and the service is excellent. Well worth the price for a superb meal.
google avatar

Caitlin T.

Yelp
Cute little restaurant downtown! Our server, Lilly, was very helpful with offering her favorite entree, checking in periodically during our meal and overall being kind. The oysters hit the spot, we preferred the non-salted over the salted. The pan seared fish, which was halibut, was so good especially over the cornbread crumbs!
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
Took a chance given the uneven reviews and sadly nothing really was outstanding. Cheese plate was decent, wi the interesting cheeses but really small portions. Caviar service was served with crackers instead of blinis. Paella came out in a dish and not served in its traditional pan. Grilled pork was fatty and pretty disappointing. Dessert of truffles was also just ok. On the bright side, service was warm and efficient and the place was packed on a Friday.

Yelp
I had an okay experience. I was staying a block away a the Moxy and since I'm a seafood lover I thought this would be a great place for a light meal. I ordered the scallop crudo as a starter and while it was tasty it was missing acid. A squeeze of lemon or lime would have made it perfect. I also ordered the gumbo. It had a good flavor, but there was more rice than gumbo, and I was disappointed by how little seafood there was other than a few salad shrimp. It was more like rice with a seafood flavored gravy. Again it wasn't bad, it was just disappointing as a gumbo. My server was friendly but very inattentive. I sat at the bar and it took several minutes before anyone even came over. Then after I finished my meal, I sat there for 10 minutes before she came back. The hostess by the door was glued to her phone screen and didn't even say goodbye/thanks for coming in when I left--she just ignored me as I walked by. Maybe the service was lacking because it was a Sunday night, but I left feeling a bit disappointed by the whole experience since I read many good reviews. Maybe it was just an off night for them. I don't live in the area so I won't be back, but perhaps you should skip this place on a Sunday evening.

Yelp
My husband and I USED to love Rappahannock. Lately, it has not been as good. We go for happy hour and they USED to have both types of their oysters on happy hour, now the old salts are not on. That was disappointing. The mussels were good and the cheeseburger was great last time we went and just ok this time. My husband had one bite and let me have his half. Really sad they have and are still going down hill.
google avatar

Elena D.

Yelp
Good food, small portions, friendly if not extremely professional service - what's not to like? wish they did happy hour items for patrons not sitting at the bar...
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the food was just ok and it felt like they forgot about us even though we were sitting at the bar. The octopus dish looked nice but the octopus tasted like a plain chicken breast and the beans were undercooked. The mussels were so small it wasn't worth the effort. I had no water refill for my entire meal nor did my friend. She also never got to order a 2nd drink because by the time we were asked we were ready to leave. After asking for our check and stacking up all of our plates, etc it still took another 15 minutes for them to run our card. The place was beautiful but we won't be back.

Yelp
I was staying around the corner, and got into town just in time to hop over to Rappahannock for happy hour. I had plans for dinner, but I can not resist fresh oysters and a cold glass of prosecco. And let me tell you, they delivered. They had two options for oysters and I got half and half. They were both great. So fresh and expertly shucked. They came with a mignonette and a cocktail sauce, both tasted house made. That day they had a special mignonette available, made of shishito peppers mustard seed and dill. It was AWESOME. It has been over a week and I am still thinking about it. It isn't a combination I would have put together, but it was inspired. The prosecco, they have on tap. I loved that. I wish that is an option that would catch on. Perfectly bubbly and super cold. Frankly, happy hour out my dinner to shame. I should have stuck around and ordered another half dozen. The oysters were $2 a piece at happy hour and I believe the wine was $7. An excellent deal. The only bummer, and this is not the fault of the restaurant, apparently Richmond adds a meal tax which total comes out to 13.5% tax. So if you are not from the area, you are not caught unawares.
google avatar

Helena D.

Yelp
Happy hour $2 oysters Mon-Fri 4-6pm. Really fresh and delicious oysters. The wood grilled octopus is amazing. Tasty and delicious. I will definitely come back. Good customer service. I sat at the bar and nice cozy environment with good music

Yelp
We want to believe in Rappahannock - we really do. Despite a rough experience on a previous visit, we tried again last night. I think there is something wrong with the management, who is certainly trying to cut costs, like the very small martini whose principal ingredient was a large cube of ice, surrounded by vodka. or the squirt of catsup where once real cocktail sauce was served with oysters. catsup? really? Our waitress was replaced with two other people during the meal, which was kind of jarring. oysters were good, hamburger was a mess that had to be eaten with a fork. the accompanying "salad" was a few lettuce leaves. The damage? one truly sad "cocktail," two dozen oysters, a glass of wine, a glass of beer, two hamburgers - $200 with tip. We want so badly to believe in Rappahannock, but every visit there screams the place has jumped the shark and we need to find somewhere else.

Yelp
What happened?? This has been one of my favorite restaurants for over 10 years and I visit about twice per year and look forward to every visit. I am very sad to say that my visit tonight might have been my last . The food was overpriced, uninspired, poorly portioned, bland, and kinda weird. The baked oysters came with a dollop of dukes mayo (why!?; gross), the swordfish was served with peanut laden salad, and the ceviche had no flavor. The wine could've been much better, the service was mediocre. Again, I'll ask, what happened?
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
Delicious and so well done! The service is amazing! People were friendly and ready to answer any questions or offer suggestions. The atmosphere is relaxed, refined, but not pretentious. The food and cocktails are fancy though! We started with the octopus and Ceviche. They did NOT disappoint with those. The cocktails are also fantastic! They had a variety of liquor options and each was well balanced. I will say the main courses were a little underwhelming. The fish was small and the sides were over salted. I would definitely go again, but I'd stick to small plates and cocktails:)
google avatar

Carolyn C.

Yelp
We ventured into Rappahannock for a quick bite and some cocktails after our event at Godfrey's. We shared some of the freshest oysters and sipped on red wine which was recommended by one of the bartenders. I wish we had more time to explore the menu but since we had just had lunch, we were quite full! I would totally come back!
google avatar

Arama K.

Yelp
This is a great seafood focused restaurant with a chef who is bringing creativity to both classics as well as some great regional flavors. Our group shared their ceviche with the steak tartare and wood grilled octopus. The pickled vegetables and charcuterie were first class as was the simple but delicious namesake Oysters. We finished with the whole fish and a great house special pierogi stuffed with short rib. All at very high value pricing. Nice ambience, crisp service and a busy crowd but the food is the star. Will be back

Yelp
As a huge seafood fan, I've always wanted to try this place but only recently got a chance to go since it opened for lunch on grad/mothers day weekend! Once you walk in you'll be greeted by an aromatic, woody/smokey flavor. I later learned that they wood-grill their whole fish which definitely exceeded my expectation in terms of taste. They offer different types of fish (on diff days I assume) but I was offered the branzino. It was super interesting and very tasty! The fish meat was juicy and gave off a nice smokey flavor. The accompanying olives, artichoke, and harrisa sauce were all delicious!! The candied lemon slices added a nice little sweet kick to the savory dish. Overall it was very interesting to eat a whole fish like this and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The scallops were super tender and nicely pan fried. It paired really well with the rice and the spiced Indian saag. Going in reverse order, the cerviche and baked clams appetizers were pretty good too, although I think the clams could have been cooked a little longer. The clams had a miso sauce with some crunch on top. It is a little pricey here but their seafood was definitely delicious. Service was great too!

Ralph L.

Yelp
Worse branzino I've had in my life! Slimmy undercooked and whatever was underneath was soggy tasteless and I thought I got asparagus but it was burnt scallions and worse martini $ can buy. They will be out of business before winter avoid at all cost
google avatar

Sancha G.

Yelp
5 star all around! We walked right in Monday night because Lillie Pearl was an hour wait. The cocktail menu was pretty basic. I told the waitress I was looking for something refreshing. She said I have a craft daiquiri. This was not your basic daiquiri! It was so refreshing and pretty, not too sweet at all. The ceviche, scallops on the BEST Carolina grits, and burger were all delicious. The service was great too! We will be back next time we are in Richmond!
google avatar

Anne S.

Yelp
This is my 10th time at Rappahannock, and something has changed. While our server was a delight, our meal was beyond overpriced for only perfectly fine food & cocktails (served in an eye-watering smokey space).

Yelp
My wife and I came to this restaurant to meet up with my wife's sisters. We had heard good things about this place, so we decided to try it out. The first thing we all noticed when we walked into the restaurant was the smokey, fishy air. I'm not sure if the place had a ventilation issue, but the air was tough to get used to. I've worked at seafood restaurants before, and it was never this bad. Even when we got home later that night, we had to wash all of our clothes because the smokey smell was on everything. Regarding drinks, I got a draft tropical IPA that was good. My wife got a rum cocktail from the menu that was excellent. For food, we got some fresh oysters for the table. They tasted great with the cocktail sauce. We also had the ceviche. It was alright but needed some more flavor. A little too citrusy. My wife and her sisters are Peruvian, so they try ceviche whenever it's on the menu. Moving on to entrees, I got the cheeseburger. It was flavorful and satisfying. The beef was cooked perfectly for me. My wife got the paella. It was a little too juicy. Almost like a soup. The rice was hard and stuck to the dish. They were even crunchy. Out of all the dishes we tried, the paella was the only one not finished. It missed the mark flavor wise. Overall, the staff was very friendly. The host, server, and bartenders were all polite. The restrooms could have used a once over. Paper towels overflowing out of the trash can. The air in the restaurant was too smoking and fishy. We all had to wash our hair, faces, and clothes to get the smell out. The restaurant isn't bad, it just needs to managed a little better. There should be a quality control check up.

Yelp
I've dined at rappahannock a few times. Most importantly for their oysters ! I haven't really liked anything else I had off the menu. So my main dish is their branzino. When I say good! I MEAN GOOD. It's one of the best ones I've had in Richmond. Happy hour is a good time and not to pricey. Also order an old fashion because you can never go one with one of those. I definitely say you should check them out.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite place to hang before the fire. The food was always on point. What keeps me going back here, although the food is not as good as it used to be, the service is Fantastic! I mean really! Don't get me wrong the food is still good, but the atmosphere is great, I love low lighting since I am in bright lights all day... and the service is the best in town! Oh, and the food I hated was credited even after I insisted on paying because I ate it- they were just upset that I didn't enjoy it even though I ate it. I just tipped it to the waitress. I am going to check out that little place they opened right outside their door this weekend! Happy eating folks, please continue to discover the unique areas of Richmond and keep each other posted.
google avatar

Hiwot A.

Yelp
It was ok. It was not cozy enough for me but, the service was great. Food was ok.Fish of the day had a lot of things on it but, it lacked flavor.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
I have been coming here since it opened and a bunch since it re-opened after the longest COVID closing in history. It may even be a world record. The bartenders are amazing as well as the drinks they create. I especially love the octopus! It seems weird that I am giving them 5 stars when you see the picture I have included of the cheese plate, but the place is that good (just not the cheese plate). This cheese plate isn't even worth charging $5 for and they charge $16. Tip of the day - order the Savage Water of Sorcery and not the cheese plate. They are the same price, but you will enjoy the drink!

Carrie D.

Yelp
Super fresh oysters. I love raw oysters so order them wherever they're offered. They provided horseradish upon request because I prefer the raw taste and then might add might add a little lemon and horseradish. We also ordered the oysters with caviar. They were so tasty I forgot to take a picture of them. Best paella we've ever had, and we've been to Spain. We enjoyed the crispy rice in particular. Delicious and fresh whole fish. It was red snapper when we visited. It fell off the bones, and the flavor was superb. Great cocktails (Negroni and dirty martini). Excellent service. Even tho I didn't specify outdoor seating in my reservation, they still accommodated it on such a lovely day. Host, waitress, and bartender were all fantastic. Walking distance from Dominion Energy Center (we went to a show at the theater beforehand). Definitely a repeat!
google avatar

Stanton-Johnn L.

Yelp
Great place for r oysters and cheese plate, bartender awesome. One thing I would love if when ordering food a side plate nice. Will still come back here as the food is ten across the board.
google avatar

Kyle V.

Yelp
My copilot and I had a quality dinner here at the bar. Our server took great care of us and we enjoyed some small talk with the "oyster shucker"(?). We ordered a few cocktails of their cocktail list before switching to beer later on during the meal. They didn't have my first choice of beer after recently running out so our waitress made another recommendation that was fine. The cocktails were pretty good but seemed pretty expensive for what you get. We started with 30 oysters which included 15 Rappahannocks and 15 Olde Salts. They all tasted the same to us but we enjoyed them. For our meal, we each went with the Pan Seared Rockfish which was pretty good. It was a large portion of fish and they side of vegetables were tasty. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and didn't have any issues. The dining room is very inviting and has a relaxing and class atmosphere. The bar is impressive in size and we had pretty good service.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
The food was a 10/10! If I could have had my entree a second time, I would have! It was the Mahi! The service was equally good! We really enjoyed how the cooking is done where you can see, very cool. Can't wait to return!

Caroline B.

Yelp
Used to be my go to upscale great food restaurant. Not anymore. Changed chef and menu. Was looking forward to the leather bound menu of wonderful food options and lovely, extensive wine list. Instead received a laminated front and back menu. The food was O.K. at best. The first server had a terrible attitude but fortunately left and the second server was awesome. Only a few people in the place at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. It would normally be packed. Guy sitting two tables over was loudly talking on speaker phone. Not the same place. Just another meh restaurant.
google avatar

Ron C.

Yelp
This place is meh. This is no reflection on the service whatsoever as the bartender was great and the ambiance here is nice. I ordered a dozen oysters and they weren't shucked appropriately. When shucking an oyster you're supposed to remove the oyster meat from the bottom of the shell so you can slurp them down. This didn't happen as all my oysters were still stuck to the shell and I had to use a fork to scrape them off so a lot of product was left in the shell. Needless to say, I won't be returning.
google avatar

Grace N.

Yelp
If you like oysters and are visiting Richmond then this is would be a great place to stop by. Its a corner restaurant with a bar taking center stage. The service is impeccable--the waitress I had was very sweet and always checking in on us. Only reason I dont give it a 5/5 is because their market fish was a mix of flavors that didnt connect well (lemon zest garlic inside versus sweet bbq tasting sauce outside) and their baked crabs were seasoned oddly--crunchy with ground beef topping--not my thing, but to each their own! I would say that their setting is rustic, quite a lot of couples were noticeable but easily a family place too! Given their prices and advertising as a classier restaurant, they could do better with the decor like covering up their AC pipes, it takes away from the actual nice setting. Overall, I enjoyed my dinner and definitely would come back for the drinks and oysters!!

Yelp
Ordered the scallops and it turned out to be one of the best dishes I've had in years. The raw rappahannock oysters and the baked oysters we're phenomenal. Service was fantastic. They change the menu based on the season. Highly recommend visiting.

Yelp
I read so many good things about this place so I was super disappointed by the experience. First of all, we walked in and the place was full of smoke. Started with oysters which were extremely gritty- was pulling a lot of pieces of shell out of my mouth which is obviously not a good time. Octopus was very weird and overcooked. The scallops were so salty and also overcooked. We also tried the lobster salad which was super disappointing- overwhelmingly tastes like mayonnaise. The service was good and that is why I would give it two stars instead of one. I would never come back and think it's either incredibly overhyped or we ordered all of the wrong things. Drinks were unimpressive but not overtly bad.

Yelp
What can you say about a restaurant who's head chef responds "we don't devein our shrimp here" when you send back paella after eating a mouthful of shrimp shit. You don't say anything because he said everything with that statement. Avoid this place like you would avoid any feces serving facility.

Yelp
I only came here for a drink which was really good. The atmosphere is good for loners, people in pairs, and groups. The hosts are pleasant and accommodating.

Yelp
Yummy food and amazing service! The place smells great too The Cullen Skink and grilled octopus were amazing, the trout crudo was really fun and of course they prepared oysters excellently. Looks like they switch up the menu regularly too! Thanks again to the amazing staff, will happily return!

Yelp
The food is mediocre. The portions are very small for the cost. Extremely overpriced. Atmosphere is OK. Nothing special.

Yelp
Food is fabulous. Service impeccable. Ambience is awesome. Our server Ray was exquisite. She was right on top of things throughout the evening.

Yelp
Have been here a few times now and day at the bar every time although there are plenty of tables. I usually show up after work. Music is obvious but not so loud you can't hear yourself think. The bar is a big square which generally makes for the best service, in my opinion. Two of our three times the bartender (different each time) has been stellar, which tells you that, like every place, so much rests on the service, even more than ambiance. Menu has some inventive twists on bistro favorites. The charcuterie board features pork that you can see being smoked over the stove, and pickled veg that they do in house. The steak tartare is unusual and delicious. The raw oysters are delicious and the shucker knows what he's doing. Friendly hosts, friendly wait staff. Definitely going back.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place. I had raw oysters (pretty good - beware the up-charge on the minuet), wood-grilled octopus (better than expected), wood-grilled whole fish (red snapper, over salted - to the point where it wasn't even appetizing, and I love salty foods), dessert (I don't even remember). The service was so very slow. Which I understand when it's busy or understaffed, but neither of those appeared to be the case that night. The kicker was all the extra items that appeared on our check from the next table over. About $200 worth. Overall a disappointing experience.

Yelp
Overall a fabulous dining experience here last night. We each got a cocktail, a garden party and a boulevardier, both were delicious. Raw oysters and grilled octopus were outstanding. Sometimes octopus is not tender but this was beautifully executed and flavorful. Next moved on to some local beer, a brown ale and stout-both very good and ordered the baked clams, roasted beet and carrot salad and bread board. The clams were herbaceous and the beet salad was fantastic! Last we went for the coffee panna cota, it had a nice coffee flavor. The chocolate ganache was very sweet but overall it was tasty. The service was so good, that made the meal even better. The host that sat us, the waiter that served us were both so kind and helpful. I wish we were local because we would come more often!
