The 21 Best Restaurants in San José, Costa Rica

"After stints at prestigious Spanish restaurants, including the two-Michelin-starred El Coque Restaurante and El Club Allard, chef Nena Murillo returned to her native Costa Rica to dedicate her life to the raw-food lifestyle. She opened Raw Co Juicery & Food, a takeout operation specializing in vibrant dishes that emphasize the unadulterated produce of Costa Rica. When she’s not teaching classes on raw food preparation, she’s whipping up juices with turmeric, lime, ginger, and honey; gluten-free, plant-based sushi and poke bowls; and colorful bowls of pureed dragon fruit or red banana topped with fresh berries." - Bill Esparza

This was such a pleasant surprise to find! As someone gf and vegan I could eat everything! Portions are a bit small but everything was delicious and service was really great.

One of my all time favorite places to go when I am in San Jose! The ambiance is lovely and simple. Good place to have a working lunch if youre into that. The food is always fresh and delicious. I usually go for a salmon avo toast on their home made seed bread or the poke. However, the pad thai and caesar always come close in second options. Their matchas are yummy and coffee is strong. I love all their juices and wellness shots. Its hard not to spend all my money here. I always feel so good after I eat. Service is nice too. The girls who work here are kind and attentive. The owner is nice too. Glad they upgraded to a larger location. It was needed.

Chill and delicious - best vegan choices around! My favorite: definitely the gazpacho and the tofu bagel. Update November 2022 Still AWESOME

I really wanted to like this place, but it was a big letdown. Costa Rica is famous for its coffee, yet this place served the worst coffee I've had in a long time. We ordered salmon toast, but they were out of it and gave us small, bland salmon chunks instead. The protein pancakes were dry and just okay. Also, be aware that if you want to take leftovers home, they’ll charge you 250 colones for a to-go box. Yes, they make you pay extra to take the food you already bought. I won’t be coming back and can’t recommend this place.

I loved this place for matcha before 🍵. But I went this afternoon, the coffee n matcha was bad, The two women who served give poor service, the woman with a tattoo on her neck was dismissive and looked at me unwillingly. Less the way she talked me that i can’t use the bathroom

I am so glad I found this little joint. A pounding headache from a vegan burger from a restaurant in San Pedro sent me running out this mourning for a green juice fix. To my relief, this was listed in Happy Cow as being organic and gluten free. I had the Doctor Green juice and the toast with avocados (w/ microgreens). They were 💯 💪🏼 The bread was entirely gluten free..so delicious and hearty I got a loaf to take home. I also got a banana bread ( coconut sugar only for sweetener). I am just grateful for this little joint. After so many bad experiences with conventional restaurants - vegan alike, I have decided to make this my primary eat-out place in San José.
