Where To Eat & Drink On Your NYC To Portland, Maine Road Trip - New York - The Infatuation

"This two-story seafood shack on the water in Rye is noteworthy for two things: all of the lobster statues out front (there’s a blue one!) and the scallop roll. Fried scallops have a tendency to be overcooked and rubbery, but these are still juicy, quite big, and only need a squeeze of lemon. If you’re on the road with a group, there’s plenty of room inside and out for everybody." - anne cruz, carlo mantuano

Excellent food! Great service! Views of the ocean! We definitely want to come back and try all their yummy chowders, apps, and meals!!! Best onion rings I've had in a long while. They don't hold back on tbe seafood!!! Chowder was loaded!! Well loved building in need of some deep cleaning and basic upgrades, but very homey and welcoming.

Dine upstairs if you want Ocean views. The onion rings, crispy, not too much batter & seasoned well. The baked stuffed lobster was very tasty, scallops sweet, juicy & plump, fries hot, seasoned, crispy & the slaw also good! I left a happy camper!

We always have a great meal here and today was no exception. We tried the fluffy Clam Chowder for the first time and it was so good! So much lobster! I had fried scallops and my husband had the 2 way with scallops and clams. Everything was delicious and we almost ate our whole plates. I had a Rum Punch, which was delicious and my husband had a Maine Lunch IPA that he loves. Server was very friendly and we got to sit on the deck and look over the ocean. Another great experience here and we will be back again!

Google
The food at Ray’s is amazing but compared to other options, it has a touristy feel and expensive for the options that I chose. I thoroughly enjoyed my fluffy clam chowder and my medium sized lobster roll. I have zero complaints on either. They have a very extensive menu with something for everyone’s taste buds. My server was a bit lacking. She never came to check to ask if I needed a refill and my glass was empty. She also brought the check before asking if I wanted anything else. She wasn’t very friendly. Not cool. The water view was beautiful. They have a gift shop so if you need to pick up a souvenir, they’ve got it!!

Food was FANTASTIC! Fried scallops and seafood platter were cooked to perfection. My husband and I dined at Ray's seafood based on a Camp Host's recommendation. We enjoyed the food but our waitress Heather was not so good. I had to ask for a soda refill and my husband wasn't offered a refill. Heather gave us our check without asking us if we wanted dessert. I wanted dessert so she had to ring up a new check. She did the bare minimum a waitress could do. If we come back, we will get take-out.

Google
Such a cute restaurant! Came in on our way up the coast and it was a delight! Waitstaff is super sweet and attentive. Food portions were huge and delicious. Fries are super crunchy, loved that. Amazing view from the second floor!

Ray's was packed Sunday afternoon when we arrived after driving down the 1 from Portland Maine. Parking was tight and limited. We got the second to last spot. The small main floor dinning room and upper deck were full with a wait. We waited a long time to ordered at the take out window which entitles you to sit at the back of the property on picnic tables with a pleasant view of a wetland. I presume you could see the ocean from the upper deck. We ordered a 1/2 pint of fried oysters (the smallest size), the senior/child stuffed haddock and "Fluffy Chowder" ($18). The Check was $65 with no drinks. The haddock was nicely done with large crinkle cut fries and a sauce cup of pleasant slaw. The oysters were a huge portion, perfectly cooked, firm and delicious. I am guessing they sold me a pint and not the 1/2 that I ordered. The fluffy chowder skimped on clams and had a few small bits of lobster. It was OK in flavor. At $18 per half pint, it was a tourist ripoff worse than any we saw in our week in Maine visiting many well known seafood shanties. .

Google
For years we've read reviews about Ray's and how wonderful it is. When we've driven by it's tough finding a place to park. Out for a ride. Saw a place to park. Thought we would give Ray's a try. It was okay. No different than any other fried seafood place. Portions were satisfying.

Yelp
Have known and drive by the place for years and years, The Hubby and I were out on a drive (its our quiet time) and we stopped in. Expected crazy as it was Labor day but surprisingly was able to to walk right in & sat down. Sat upstairs on the deck, super cute view. Food was great, service was friendly and helpful. OMG THE BROTH... Order the mussels JUST to drink the butter, Seriously was going to ask to buy a gallon to go. Shrimp was just shrimp, but the seafood was great, Calamari was GOOD... Did I mention the mussels? Like seriously its 10am on a Monday and wondering how I can drink some for lunch today. It might have just been butter but they put magical fairy, crack dust or something in it because yeah - This girls fiending for more!! LOL Ok enough, Ill stop! But def take the ride up, have a good day, take some pics with the Giant lobster in the back!

Yelp
Decided to take a drive here yesterday after a long stressful week. Reviews looked good and I've always been curious about this restaurant all the years I've been going up to the beach. Unfortunately, from the start, it was very disappointing. It was a little confusing where you ordered where you sat staff just expected you knew how the place ran. After being told we could go upstairs to be waited on by staff and seated, we proceeded to do so my girlfriend and I. After walking up the stairs, we found ourselves standing in a bar area with only one person sitting at the bar and a female bartender. Took her a few minutes to even pay attention to us that we were standing there and when we proceeded to ask her what we did who sat us how we ordered she was very rude , like surprised that we didn't know the way things were ran that was a total turn off. This was yesterday afternoon approximately 3:30 4 o'clock Ish. We see ourselves outside there was a heavy stench of bleach that was overwhelming when you were sitting there to eat food . Needless to say we were both going to get fried seafood because that's what I heard you folks specialize in, disappointing that we didn't because we went with broiled scallops that were tasteless and the driest baked potato I have ever eaten there wasn't enough butter or sour cream to take the dryness away . My friend went with the special scallops and haddock baked. There was so much stuffing on it that was also very dry and tasteless. You could barely find the haddock and scallops. Also, the food had little to no flavor at all. Very, very disappointing from the beginning to end. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend and I would never return to this establishment. Food and staff left a really bad taste, in our mouths to say the least. I'm very new to doing reviews . Typically, I let things slide. You can always get a bad meal but this is happening in too many establishments these days. I feel like owners and occupants should just be thankful that people are even going out to dinner with the prices of food these days and doing their best to please them and I see just the opposite they're just trying to get by. It's very disheartening.

Yelp
I ordered the seafood chowder, onion rings, and small fried clams. The seafood chowder was disappointing, there was no seasoning and it was very watery. I do prefer a thicker chowder. The onion rings were okay, they could have been crunchier but they were tasty. The oysters tasted fresh but I also wish they were fried a bit longer and for some type of seasoning. I also had the painkiller, which was also okay. The service was pretty quick for it being busy. My server was pleasant. I dined in the downstairs room so I didn't get the upper deck view but it did seem like a nice, family restaurant that locals frequent.

Yelp
The hubby and I stopped here for a late lunch. I really wanted some Seafood Chowder. They didn't disappoint. Tasted delicious!! My hubby got the Haddock dinner. I got the lobster roll. It was 6oz and that was way too much food. Everything was delicious. Service was great! The prices were average for a restaurant right off the coast. The decor is your typical Seashore themed. Lots of BIG lobster statues. We sat on the second floor so we had a great view of the ocean. We will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
We're back on vacation and of course had to come to Ray's again. We've been here before and it's always solid. Didn't have to wait long, which was a nice surprise. I got the fried oysters (the small order, around $22) and they were awesome super crispy and fresh. Also tried the lobster baked haddock and wow, the portion was huge. Definitely get your appetite ready. We sat in the dining room. There was a family with really loud kids nearby for part of it, which was kind of annoying, but once they left it was much more enjoyable. Overall, love the food and the service. Everyone's always friendly and the meals are consistently great. We'll always make a point to stop here whenever we're in town.

Yelp
This is our second time visiting Ray's, first time this season. Tasty seafood at a reasonable price with great ocean views. Friendly, knowledgeable staff who give great service.

Jeff A.

Yelp
It's a dump inside. The flooring was filthy and the tables and chairs hadn't seen any polish or oil soap in years. My forearm and hand stuck to the table top and chair arms. Used to be my go-to for seafood. Not anymore. Maybe there was a management change. Too bad....
google avatar

Christopher S.

Yelp
Good view of the ocean on the second floor. Great full-belly fried clams. Good service. One of my favorite spots when visiting New England for clams.

Dan L.

Yelp
we just had two bowls of clam chowder. It was not hot and we've had better clam chowder from Market Basket.
google avatar

Rachael Z.

Yelp
The dining room is seat yourself. We sat upstairs and had a gorgeous view. Our waitress was super friendly and food came out quickly! We were not a fan of the fried clams. The crab cake was tasty and the bang bang shrimp was my favorite.

Yelp
I love your fries! Super crunchy, clean tasty oil, calamari soft yet lovely crunch on the batter; tasty coleslaw (garlic flavor). Would love to taste their fish and chips next time.

Laura J.

Yelp
Food is the BEST! ORDER as you arrive and brought to your table. You will not be disappointed! Fish basket small was more than I expected & delicious! Tender & FL a key as well as the LG clan basket! Fresh seafood at reasonable prices. Friendly service who just opened in April! We will be back!

Yelp
So we were in Dover the other day, so we thought we would drive to rye to try Ray's seafood. Well, much to our surprise, we sat down, and within a few minutes, the AC turned on with a blower under my chair. we asked to turn it off. she came back with no we can't do that. so i got up and my wife and i walked out. if that's the way they treat people, i will never go back!!! it's sad i had to give it even 1 star.

Yelp
If you love seafood you won't be disappointed. Located across the street from Rye beach. This restaurant has been serving seafood for 50 years When I'm in coastal area, Rays Seafood is a must stop. You can dine inside there are two floors with an ocean view on the upper floor. There is also picnic tables outside Ample parking Today my guest ordered Fish and chips - most fish I have ever seen a good value I ordered a 2-way seafood combo fried clams and scallops- Plenty of food - In fact you could share this plate- the coleslaw was also delicious The service and the employees are great The menu has something for everyone Stop in and enjoy Of course we'll be back !!

Yelp
Had yummy Haddock & scallops dinners here at this busy very casual spot. Had to wait for a table on a weeknight shortly after summer. Our friends got the seafood dishes that came with the cracker crumbs on top & they also liked theirs. Across the street from the beach in Rye, New Hampshire.

Carol R.

Yelp
Disappointed- haven't been to Rays in several years - wanted an ocean view for visitors. Food was good- no complaints except for prices.! I ordered onion rings and was surprised when the bill came- $9.99 for a side of rings! -think that's the highest price I've ever paid for rings. Service was soso- mistake on the bill, no amenities- had to ask for tarter, napkins, etc. asked question about their "fluffy chowder" which was made famous by another Rye restaurant. The answer I received was obviously not the truth, also asked about hard shell or soft shell listers to go. Was told they didn't know if they were hard or soft. won't go back - too many other restaurants in the area tat do a better job.!

Yelp
As a local and first time visitor I was very disappointed considering I brought some out of town friends. Service was nonexistent- we saw our server all of 3 times- take our order, drop off our order and when we hunted for her cause we ran out of water during our meal and still parched. We ordered 3 meals, and for some reason it felt like it took forever for our food to arrive on a Monday evening. Yes the inside was full, but fried seafood does not take that long. Anyway, my 2 way platter whole clams and scallops with $4 up charge for onion rings were so disappointing. My clams tasted off, I didn't get sick persay but I had a bit of indigestion after. The scallops were fine, portion small for the price. And the $4 up charge for onion rings were not worth it- Very few onion rings! I found the tartar bland as well. My companions lobster pie just looked terrible. The crust while baked looks saturated/greasy. Their shrimp basket seemed fine- They also need to focus on cleaning as we sat by the window inside and saw some dead flies on the window sill- not appetizing . I'll stick with other local fried seafood places- this is simply not for me.

Gail K.

Yelp
Lobster pie awful no lobster price 32.00, I had a drink 16.00 rum punch the only thing that was good was my baked haddock. If you are going to charge high prices give good portions. Very disappointing we used to go often NO MORE.

Jan R.

Yelp
Went to Rays seafood in RYE NH. Excellent :seafood & excellent service. They have child/senior menu which is awesome. Highly recommend. Jan

Yelp
Expensive, but it is disgusting. Fish and chips were possibly the worst I've ever tasted.

Joyce D.

Yelp
I hate to recommend this place because I always want to have a seat for myself!! it's where the locals go; and everybody is welcome.

Sheryl A.

Yelp
Great seafood restaurant, friendly staff and delicious food . beautiful area right by the Sea.

Gregg S.

Yelp
Food was meh. Nothing particularly great or poor. Service was awful. The girl managing the place must have been 20 years old and was acting like a tyrant on where everyone was supposed to stand and wait and sit to eat. This place was dirty, and the deck tables were soaked by the rain which is where she was directing everyone to sit and eat.

Heather D.

Yelp
Best lobster, great prices, the baked potato was actually hot, the cole slaw delicious. Good value, nice ocean view!

Andy B.

Yelp
Less than a dozen people in there and my to go order still got" misplaced". 10 people served before me and I got my order in first. Bad Food- because of the wait my lobster roll roll turned to mush, the flavor of meat was very sweet and good. Seafood chowder was best around.

Susan S.

Yelp
I got the baked stuffed shrimp and it was burnt on top. I guess I should have gone with my first choice, but the lobster roll seemed expensive. The service was good.

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
The bartender was very nice and affirmative. She was helpful with things on the menu. The food was very mid for the price you pay but good for a quick stop. It did look cool inside just a little crowded.

Mike P.

Yelp
Delicious!. . . Our go-to place for seafood when we go to the beach -- excellent service; good portions; tasty food. . .

Bob H.

Yelp
Every year, on our week-long vacation, we have supper every night at Rays. Have never had a bad meal. Staff are great, remember us, and make the experience even better. Tonight we had extra entertainment when a super crass Karen began to complain about the fact her server had a slight accent (we had her last night and found her interesting and fun). They generated a big family fight about it, walked out, without paying, lit up their cigarettes, got into a $100K Escalade, drove the wrong way out of the parking lot, and pulled in front of traffic. the balcony was booing them as they left. I presume they will leave a poor review. just wish all we spectators could review them. Thumbs up for Ray's!!
google avatar

Denis D.

Yelp
Good decent meal. We ordered the clam strips dinner for $21.99. Good portion size. Very good. Employees were friendly and welcoming. Will go back. Only one minor complaint: I hate it when they put "priced daily" on several items on the menu.... Just come up with a number and put the prices on the menu! Sure, lobster price from their supplier may vary, but make something up that should cover highs and lows. Not rocket science.
google avatar

Dave I.

Yelp
Stopped for lunch Saturday afternoon, waited 10 minutes for a table on the deck. Very friendly servers, had the steamers and they were delicious! GF had the large lobster roll and delicious as well. Food was brought out quick, great portions. Will be back!
google avatar

Rick Y.

Yelp
Always great food. Fresh and hot. Service always friendly. Classic New England flair. Sit on second floor to see the ocean over the stone wall. One of my favorite places.
google avatar

Diane F.

Yelp
I called to order out. Was asked to wait. 7 minutes later no pick up and they did not put me on hold. I listened to all the conversations. Silly! No one came back. I love this place. Its history. Service is not what it was. Hope they get more volume as concerned the biz is going to Peteys.
google avatar

Alyssa E.

Yelp
Loved this place! The food was fantastic. Known for their lobster rolls and they did not disappoint. The hand battered onion rings were also incredible and I am picky. The staff was super friendly and the view was also amazing.
google avatar

Suzi B.

Yelp
Tasty fresh seafood in Rye. Word is the lobster is caught same day. Casual dining rooms and decks. Young, upbeat staff. Fair prices. Get there early. This place is big but is popular and fills up fast.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
If you want a phenomenal lobster roll...you need to go to Rays. You have the option to have it prepared hot with butter or cold with mayo and can have one as big as 10oz!!! Drinks were great, server was attentive and the appetizers we got were fantastic as well. Will definitely be coming back with the family before the season ends.
google avatar

Dana S.

Yelp
We enjoyed 2X 1.5lb lobsters and love it and a good price too. Sitting on the outside patio was very nice as well. We will return.
google avatar

Jeary S.

Yelp
Every was very good and affordable! The staffs were on the younger side (high schoolers) and they were bit hesitant to serve the tables? But eventually, I did get the extra sauce I wanted. I got the whole Lobster with butter, coleslaw, and fried combo. The places also have a nice serene view to the beach which is nice. They also have a easy parking lot but if it's full, you can also park along the beach for free. I parked along the beach and walked along the beach afterwards. Would check out again. 4.4/5

Mary F.

Yelp
Visited Ray's this past weekend and left very unimpressed. Ordered a Baked Haddock dish that came with a potato and Cole slaw. The baked haddock was served on a paper plate. I mean I get it, this is a place that serves on paper plates but a baked dish like this could easily have been served in a disposable tin. Overall a big disappointment
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
Rays seafood is amazing, all the food options are really fresh and prepared exceptional. Highly recommend!!!!
google avatar

Nancy T.

Yelp
Food is fresh delicious we had clams fried clams onion rings spot on delicious service was prompt and we ate outside at the picnic tables. Lovely watching the birds. Highly recommended somewhat expensive but worth it.

Yelp
We are locals and look forward to Rays opening up in the spring. We went for a late lunch a week after their seasonal opening on an unexpectedly nice day. We were fortunate to not have to deal with a busy place at the time that we went and we got a booth overlooking the ocean. It's a gorgeous view where we watched early spring surfers and the waves roll in. Rays is very clean and has a pretty extensive menu with both delicious fried seafood and yummy baked dishes. We split an order of steamers which were some of the better ones we've had in the area. My husband had a medium order of haddock bites and he really enjoyed them while I had one of my favs, a tuna melt which was not greasy and was very tasty, with fries that were cooked just right. Our waitperson was friendly and appropriately attentive. Rays is not fancy, with paper plates and menus for placemats but if you're hankering for fresh seafood (they catch their own) you should definitely try Rays.

Marcia L.

Yelp
Ray's always has good service. The waiters and bartenders are full of personality. It is a family owned business that has been in Rye for over 50 years. They have the best baked stuffed lobster of anywhere around.
google avatar

Mark F.

Yelp
First time today. Excellent scallop roll stuffed. My wife got the fish and chips. Excellent service. We will be back

Andy L.

Yelp
Casual, old school lobster joint right by the beach--wait for a table outside but well worth it..had lobster roll jumbo and a steamed lobster--not cheap but well worth it given the freshness...we did not try any of it but there are plenty of fried seafood options..
google avatar

Lana M.

Yelp
I never give a bad review but I have tried several times e-mailing to them and never got a response. We were there in August for lunch and ordered from the takeout window to eat outside. We ordered a fisherman's platter and 2 ice tea's, the bill was approximate $60. The girls behind the window were so rude, the food was cold and no taste to the ice tea, I had to go up 3 times because they forgot to give salt, extra tarter and ketchup. Each time I went up, they would either make a face, or say well I wasn't your server! I said well if it was all in the bag the way I ordered it I would not have to bother you. I am making this short but it really wasn't. Did you ever have cold seafood and fries? Please don't say I should of returned it because their attitude was so bad, God knows what they would have done with the food. I went on their website and contacted them as I said and no response. They should know why they just lost a few good customers or maybe they really don't care!

Jody K.

Yelp
Best service best fries best fries clams best slaw. What a great restaurant. Highly recommended portions are awesome! Will be back!!!!

Steve A.

Yelp
Ok, it was Father's Day, I didn't really expect to get in ... but; no lie ... I got the last parking spot at 1:30. When I went in, the place was packed, many folks waiting ... we'll, the wife and I walked upstairs to the bar, like we usually do, and a couple had just gotten up. NO WAIT! Ok, I'm just saying we've had good luck here, maybe you will too! Now, I wish I would get something different to eat, but; the Haddock Roll definitely gets me to say 'WOW' when it's placed in front of me. The bread was soft as a cloud, the haddock was hot and crispy, and there was an abundance of fries ... not some wimpy tablespoon of fries. I left stuffed and happy! Man, I'm telling ya, ya gotta go here if you haven't been here already!

Meg B.

Yelp
Great seating options and tasty seafood! Our waitress was attentive and we appreciated all the menu options. Hot lobstah roll was so good.
