Where To Eat & Drink On Your NYC To Portland, Maine Road Trip - New York - The Infatuation

"This two-story seafood shack on the water in Rye is noteworthy for two things: all of the lobster statues out front (there’s a blue one!) and the scallop roll. Fried scallops have a tendency to be overcooked and rubbery, but these are still juicy, quite big, and only need a squeeze of lemon. If you’re on the road with a group, there’s plenty of room inside and out for everybody." - anne cruz, carlo mantuano

Food was FANTASTIC! Fried scallops and seafood platter were cooked to perfection. My husband and I dined at Ray's seafood based on a Camp Host's recommendation. We enjoyed the food but our waitress Heather was not so good. I had to ask for a soda refill and my husband wasn't offered a refill. Heather gave us our check without asking us if we wanted dessert. I wanted dessert so she had to ring up a new check. She did the bare minimum a waitress could do. If we come back, we will get take-out.

We always have a great meal here and today was no exception. We tried the fluffy Clam Chowder for the first time and it was so good! So much lobster! I had fried scallops and my husband had the 2 way with scallops and clams. Everything was delicious and we almost ate our whole plates. I had a Rum Punch, which was delicious and my husband had a Maine Lunch IPA that he loves. Server was very friendly and we got to sit on the deck and look over the ocean. Another great experience here and we will be back again!

For years we've read reviews about Ray's and how wonderful it is. When we've driven by it's tough finding a place to park. Out for a ride. Saw a place to park. Thought we would give Ray's a try. It was okay. No different than any other fried seafood place. Portions were satisfying.

Google
Dine upstairs if you want Ocean views. The onion rings, crispy, not too much batter & seasoned well. The baked stuffed lobster was very tasty, scallops sweet, juicy & plump, fries hot, seasoned, crispy & the slaw also good! I left a happy camper!

Google
Such a cute restaurant! Came in on our way up the coast and it was a delight! Waitstaff is super sweet and attentive. Food portions were huge and delicious. Fries are super crunchy, loved that. Amazing view from the second floor!

Google
A great place for fresh and well prepared seafood. Many seating options including inside, patio and roof deck. Potion size is great and price is comparable with most similar restaurants. Full bar offering and several appetizers to get started with.

Google
One of the best seafood restaurants on the Seacoast. Best lobster bisque. Period. Portions were awesome, butter was everywhere it should be, all the fish was super fresh and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend the lemon pepper scallops. None of us have ever had something like that and we all agreed they were delicious and unique. Baked haddock, baked salmon, and fried seafood medley all were exactly as you'd want it.

Google
Found Ray’s by accident, and it turned out great! The food was good, and the lobster roll did not disappoint! Have marked this place in my map for a repeat on our next pass through the area!

Yelp
We're back on vacation and of course had to come to Ray's again. We've been here before and it's always solid. Didn't have to wait long, which was a nice surprise. I got the fried oysters (the small order, around $22) and they were awesome super crispy and fresh. Also tried the lobster baked haddock and wow, the portion was huge. Definitely get your appetite ready. We sat in the dining room. There was a family with really loud kids nearby for part of it, which was kind of annoying, but once they left it was much more enjoyable. Overall, love the food and the service. Everyone's always friendly and the meals are consistently great. We'll always make a point to stop here whenever we're in town.

Yelp
I ordered the seafood chowder, onion rings, and small fried clams. The seafood chowder was disappointing, there was no seasoning and it was very watery. I do prefer a thicker chowder. The onion rings were okay, they could have been crunchier but they were tasty. The oysters tasted fresh but I also wish they were fried a bit longer and for some type of seasoning. I also had the painkiller, which was also okay. The service was pretty quick for it being busy. My server was pleasant. I dined in the downstairs room so I didn't get the upper deck view but it did seem like a nice, family restaurant that locals frequent.

Yelp
This is our second time visiting Ray's, first time this season. Tasty seafood at a reasonable price with great ocean views. Friendly, knowledgeable staff who give great service.

Carol R.

Yelp
Disappointed- haven't been to Rays in several years - wanted an ocean view for visitors. Food was good- no complaints except for prices.! I ordered onion rings and was surprised when the bill came- $9.99 for a side of rings! -think that's the highest price I've ever paid for rings. Service was soso- mistake on the bill, no amenities- had to ask for tarter, napkins, etc. asked question about their "fluffy chowder" which was made famous by another Rye restaurant. The answer I received was obviously not the truth, also asked about hard shell or soft shell listers to go. Was told they didn't know if they were hard or soft. won't go back - too many other restaurants in the area tat do a better job.!

Gail K.

Yelp
Lobster pie awful no lobster price 32.00, I had a drink 16.00 rum punch the only thing that was good was my baked haddock. If you are going to charge high prices give good portions. Very disappointing we used to go often NO MORE.

Jan R.

Yelp
Went to Rays seafood in RYE NH. Excellent :seafood & excellent service. They have child/senior menu which is awesome. Highly recommend. Jan

Yelp
Every year, on our week-long vacation, we have supper every night at Rays. Have never had a bad meal. Staff are great, remember us, and make the experience even better. Tonight we had extra entertainment when a super crass Karen began to complain about the fact her server had a slight accent (we had her last night and found her interesting and fun). They generated a big family fight about it, walked out, without paying, lit up their cigarettes, got into a $100K Escalade, drove the wrong way out of the parking lot, and pulled in front of traffic. the balcony was booing them as they left. I presume they will leave a poor review. just wish all we spectators could review them. Thumbs up for Ray's!!

Yelp
Delicious!. . . Our go-to place for seafood when we go to the beach -- excellent service; good portions; tasty food. . .

Yelp
Expensive, but it is disgusting. Fish and chips were possibly the worst I've ever tasted.

Yelp
If you love seafood you won't be disappointed. Located across the street from Rye beach. This restaurant has been serving seafood for 50 years When I'm in coastal area, Rays Seafood is a must stop. You can dine inside there are two floors with an ocean view on the upper floor. There is also picnic tables outside Ample parking Today my guest ordered Fish and chips - most fish I have ever seen a good value I ordered a 2-way seafood combo fried clams and scallops- Plenty of food - In fact you could share this plate- the coleslaw was also delicious The service and the employees are great The menu has something for everyone Stop in and enjoy Of course we'll be back !!

Gregg S.

Yelp
Food was meh. Nothing particularly great or poor. Service was awful. The girl managing the place must have been 20 years old and was acting like a tyrant on where everyone was supposed to stand and wait and sit to eat. This place was dirty, and the deck tables were soaked by the rain which is where she was directing everyone to sit and eat.

Yelp
Had yummy Haddock & scallops dinners here at this busy very casual spot. Had to wait for a table on a weeknight shortly after summer. Our friends got the seafood dishes that came with the cracker crumbs on top & they also liked theirs. Across the street from the beach in Rye, New Hampshire.

Andy B.

Yelp
Less than a dozen people in there and my to go order still got" misplaced". 10 people served before me and I got my order in first. Bad Food- because of the wait my lobster roll roll turned to mush, the flavor of meat was very sweet and good. Seafood chowder was best around.

Yelp
As a local and first time visitor I was very disappointed considering I brought some out of town friends. Service was nonexistent- we saw our server all of 3 times- take our order, drop off our order and when we hunted for her cause we ran out of water during our meal and still parched. We ordered 3 meals, and for some reason it felt like it took forever for our food to arrive on a Monday evening. Yes the inside was full, but fried seafood does not take that long. Anyway, my 2 way platter whole clams and scallops with $4 up charge for onion rings were so disappointing. My clams tasted off, I didn't get sick persay but I had a bit of indigestion after. The scallops were fine, portion small for the price. And the $4 up charge for onion rings were not worth it- Very few onion rings! I found the tartar bland as well. My companions lobster pie just looked terrible. The crust while baked looks saturated/greasy. Their shrimp basket seemed fine- They also need to focus on cleaning as we sat by the window inside and saw some dead flies on the window sill- not appetizing . I'll stick with other local fried seafood places- this is simply not for me.

Yelp
Good decent meal. We ordered the clam strips dinner for $21.99. Good portion size. Very good. Employees were friendly and welcoming. Will go back. Only one minor complaint: I hate it when they put "priced daily" on several items on the menu.... Just come up with a number and put the prices on the menu! Sure, lobster price from their supplier may vary, but make something up that should cover highs and lows. Not rocket science.
google avatar

Yelp
I called to order out. Was asked to wait. 7 minutes later no pick up and they did not put me on hold. I listened to all the conversations. Silly! No one came back. I love this place. Its history. Service is not what it was. Hope they get more volume as concerned the biz is going to Peteys.
google avatar

Yelp
Always great food. Fresh and hot. Service always friendly. Classic New England flair. Sit on second floor to see the ocean over the stone wall. One of my favorite places.
google avatar

Alyssa E.

Yelp
Loved this place! The food was fantastic. Known for their lobster rolls and they did not disappoint. The hand battered onion rings were also incredible and I am picky. The staff was super friendly and the view was also amazing.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
If you want a phenomenal lobster roll...you need to go to Rays. You have the option to have it prepared hot with butter or cold with mayo and can have one as big as 10oz!!! Drinks were great, server was attentive and the appetizers we got were fantastic as well. Will definitely be coming back with the family before the season ends.
google avatar

Suzi B.

Yelp
Tasty fresh seafood in Rye. Word is the lobster is caught same day. Casual dining rooms and decks. Young, upbeat staff. Fair prices. Get there early. This place is big but is popular and fills up fast.
google avatar

Dana S.

Yelp
We enjoyed 2X 1.5lb lobsters and love it and a good price too. Sitting on the outside patio was very nice as well. We will return.

Mary F.

Yelp
Visited Ray's this past weekend and left very unimpressed. Ordered a Baked Haddock dish that came with a potato and Cole slaw. The baked haddock was served on a paper plate. I mean I get it, this is a place that serves on paper plates but a baked dish like this could easily have been served in a disposable tin. Overall a big disappointment

Yelp
Rays seafood is amazing, all the food options are really fresh and prepared exceptional. Highly recommend!!!!

Yelp
Stopped for lunch Saturday afternoon, waited 10 minutes for a table on the deck. Very friendly servers, had the steamers and they were delicious! GF had the large lobster roll and delicious as well. Food was brought out quick, great portions. Will be back!
google avatar

Nancy T.

Yelp
Food is fresh delicious we had clams fried clams onion rings spot on delicious service was prompt and we ate outside at the picnic tables. Lovely watching the birds. Highly recommended somewhat expensive but worth it.
google avatar

Jeary S.

Yelp
Every was very good and affordable! The staffs were on the younger side (high schoolers) and they were bit hesitant to serve the tables? But eventually, I did get the extra sauce I wanted. I got the whole Lobster with butter, coleslaw, and fried combo. The places also have a nice serene view to the beach which is nice. They also have a easy parking lot but if it's full, you can also park along the beach for free. I parked along the beach and walked along the beach afterwards. Would check out again. 4.4/5

Yelp
We are locals and look forward to Rays opening up in the spring. We went for a late lunch a week after their seasonal opening on an unexpectedly nice day. We were fortunate to not have to deal with a busy place at the time that we went and we got a booth overlooking the ocean. It's a gorgeous view where we watched early spring surfers and the waves roll in. Rays is very clean and has a pretty extensive menu with both delicious fried seafood and yummy baked dishes. We split an order of steamers which were some of the better ones we've had in the area. My husband had a medium order of haddock bites and he really enjoyed them while I had one of my favs, a tuna melt which was not greasy and was very tasty, with fries that were cooked just right. Our waitperson was friendly and appropriately attentive. Rays is not fancy, with paper plates and menus for placemats but if you're hankering for fresh seafood (they catch their own) you should definitely try Rays.

Marcia L.

Yelp
Ray's always has good service. The waiters and bartenders are full of personality. It is a family owned business that has been in Rye for over 50 years. They have the best baked stuffed lobster of anywhere around.

Andy L.

Yelp
Casual, old school lobster joint right by the beach--wait for a table outside but well worth it..had lobster roll jumbo and a steamed lobster--not cheap but well worth it given the freshness...we did not try any of it but there are plenty of fried seafood options..

Yelp
I never give a bad review but I have tried several times e-mailing to them and never got a response. We were there in August for lunch and ordered from the takeout window to eat outside. We ordered a fisherman's platter and 2 ice tea's, the bill was approximate $60. The girls behind the window were so rude, the food was cold and no taste to the ice tea, I had to go up 3 times because they forgot to give salt, extra tarter and ketchup. Each time I went up, they would either make a face, or say well I wasn't your server! I said well if it was all in the bag the way I ordered it I would not have to bother you. I am making this short but it really wasn't. Did you ever have cold seafood and fries? Please don't say I should of returned it because their attitude was so bad, God knows what they would have done with the food. I went on their website and contacted them as I said and no response. They should know why they just lost a few good customers or maybe they really don't care!

Jody K.

Yelp
Best service best fries best fries clams best slaw. What a great restaurant. Highly recommended portions are awesome! Will be back!!!!

Meg B.

Yelp
Great seating options and tasty seafood! Our waitress was attentive and we appreciated all the menu options. Hot lobstah roll was so good.

Brian P.

Yelp
The food was excellent!! Great service and drinks too. Best calamari I've had in years, so soft and fried perfectly. Got to be the best place on this stretch of the coast
google avatar

Mark F.

Yelp
First time today. Excellent scallop roll stuffed. My wife got the fish and chips. Excellent service. We will be back

Jeff A.

Yelp
Stopped there last week for dinner. We were sat at a table that was filthy and sticky as well as the chairs. The floors were stained with littered. Needless to say we left. It's too bad because we used to like visiting there in the past. Must be new ownership.

Alexander E.

Yelp
From the the buzzer button from the 35 min, to the brief interaction at the table with the waitress.... Not impressed! I love when they combine the takeout food lady with your waitress so she's overwhelmed and treat you like a I'm running complete asshole nonetheless they would not change the order 30 seconds after typing it into the POS system and refused to cancel the food all together. We got asked to leave for our complaint
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
Ok, it was Father's Day, I didn't really expect to get in ... but; no lie ... I got the last parking spot at 1:30. When I went in, the place was packed, many folks waiting ... we'll, the wife and I walked upstairs to the bar, like we usually do, and a couple had just gotten up. NO WAIT! Ok, I'm just saying we've had good luck here, maybe you will too! Now, I wish I would get something different to eat, but; the Haddock Roll definitely gets me to say 'WOW' when it's placed in front of me. The bread was soft as a cloud, the haddock was hot and crispy, and there was an abundance of fries ... not some wimpy tablespoon of fries. I left stuffed and happy! Man, I'm telling ya, ya gotta go here if you haven't been here already!

Yelp
Ray's is a wonderful quaint seafood spot on the shore. The food selections are exactly what you woild expect. SEAFOOD. A great hardworking staff. Very patient and friendly. Recommended.

Lauren G.

Yelp
Such good food and service! 10/10 would come back again. Bartender was so attentive. Everyone at the bar loved him, and he wasn't too bad on the eyes either. I plan on inviting some friends to come back!
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Ray's was a huge upgrade from our experience at a nearby competitor. The lobster roll I ordered was huge, despite not being the jumbo size. It had large chunks of lobster meat with minimum filler (mayo, celery, etc). Their fries were really yummy as I subbed them for chips. They have a small draft beer selection but also a full bar. The service was very friendly and efficient. The restaurant is multiple floors and has dining areas both inside and outside. We opted to sit at the bar which is located upstairs. It looked like you can also order take out and sit at one of their picnic benches to eat. This looked like where a lot of the families with kids were eating. I would highly recommend going here for great seafood and a pleasant dining experience.
google avatar

Christopher S.

Yelp
Great setting overlooking the ocean on the second floor. Had belly clams which were delicious! Excellent friendly service too. Bowl of clam chowder was delicious too!
google avatar

Dwayne G.

Yelp
We had a great quick meal and the waiter was alert. Responsive and quick. Thank you Jake ! And thank you Rays.

Nancy M.

Yelp
I recently ordered the lobster pie and was disappointed because the sauce was very different and not nearly as good as it had always been when I've had it in the past. The sauce was light in color, very creamy, smooth and tasty; like a delicious lobster bisque. This time it was dark, not so creamy, more like tomato pasty. I certainly hope they go back to their original recipe. Service is always pleasant and the staff cannot do enough for you. Ambiance is simple and rustic; paper plates, paper cups and plastic wear, nothing fancy, the food on the most part is always fresh and delicious. Except for the recent disappointment of the Lobster Pie I got this last time. For the record, we've been going there for years and we will be back.
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
Food was not good. Mostly fried everything. Service was terrible we came on a rainy day and my sensitive 3 year old didn't want to wear her wet boots anymore and was refusing to put them back on. The server wanted to hassle us twice on the issue and we were trying to leave. Don't waste your money on this place, go to Petey's.
google avatar

Jason F.

Yelp
Well the place is small, the few is huge! The food was extraordinarily good and if I had room in my belly we had to have lobster since that's the staple and we go to bed good news. Lobster candy lobster sandwich. Both were amazing! I wish I knew how to catch lobster but that's not gonna happen.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
We did a day road trip to get the motorcycle serviced and asked where the locals go to get lobster rolls. We were told to come here and we were glad we did. The restaurant is across the street from Rye beach and has some outdoor seating and also indoor seating on two floors. We ordered fried calamari as a starter (I had looked for fried clams, but didn't see them under Appetizers; they were located under sides; I would've preferred to order those). A large clam chowder and two lobster rolls (one with mayo and one clear-butter only) rounded out the order. The calamari was copious, fresh and tasty. It was served with a tiny cup of marinara that wasn't enough for all of the calamari. The chowder was full of clams and potato; it was a bit thinner than I'd expected, but was creamy and as my boyfriend said, "it has a little sandy grit, so you know it's authentic." The rolls were full of delicious lobster. The one with mayo didn't have much mayo, which ensures the flavor of the lobster shines. Service was excellent. All in all a good experience.

Yelp
I can sadly say I won't be back to our beloved Ray's. We, a party of three, came in on a Tuesday evening (5:30pm to avoid the dinner rush due to health concerns) and by 6:40pm we were still waiting on our entrees-- which we ended up cancelling. The parking lot had many spots available and the only seating occupied was on the 2nd story porch-- not very busy at all. Though our server, Abby, was kind, she was quite indifferent when asked about the status of our food. Yes, some nasty weather came through and we asked if we could move inside (something Abby said was okay), but when you find your server in the kitchen with 5+ other employees, you start to wonder. The restaurant looked to be well-staffed but the service and ambience said otherwise. A true bummer as their pepper jelly will always hold a special place in my heart.

Yelp
Ray's Seafood 1677 Ocean Blvd Rye, NH 03870 603-436-7425 "we catch our own Lobsters" Don't miss out eating at this gem with a view. What's so special, everything!! The view, the food, the wait staff ( Hi Liddy) the total atmosphere of a real authentic Lobster shack on the ocean. This was my second time to Ray's. The first being with my tandem bike group years ago. Ray's is located on one of the best ocean bike roads in the area. But this time was by car. My fare was boiled lobster, Maine steamers and lobster bisque. The wife had Lobster pie. All were fantastic. Above all Liddy (waiter) made sure that everything was delivered Hot with plenty of melted butter and clam broth for dipping. The view from the third floor is fantastic. Thanks Liddy and good luck attending Providence college in the fall.

Jane M.

Yelp
Ate there on Sunday, August 6. We have been coming to Ray's for years. Fried clams were OK, nothing special. French fries and onion rings were terrible. Fries were not cooked, onion rings were doughy really terrible. Prices are comparable to other seafood restaurants, based on market conditions, but for the first time ever; not worth it.
