Ray’s Deli in West Village Serves a Top Notch Liverwurst Sandwich - Eater NY

"Liverwurst isn’t as easy to find as it used to be. It is a German or Austrian sausage of the spreadable sort, made with pig liver, lard, and sometimes onion or bacon. Mustard is a necessity, and raw onions an asset. Finally, you need a good stout bread. Whole wheat was used at Ray’s Deli, where liverwurst was found for $6." - Robert Sietsema

NYC’s Best Breakfast Sandwich Hacks, Week 1: Pernil - Eater NY

"Ray’s Super Deli offers a breakfast sandwich featuring pernil, a pork shoulder roasted with sofrito or a variation, priced at $4.99. The sandwich is rich and gloppy, with a thick slice of pernil hinting of oregano and garlic, making it a filling meal that can last until mid-afternoon." - Robert Sietsema

Quick service. Very nice convenient store.

Google
Popped in for a quick breakfast before heading into work and got a sausage egg and cheese croissant. Soft, flaky, and delicious. It definitely hit the spot. Classic NYC bodega with a ton of options for a great price. I haven’t tried the wraps yet but they look great so will come back for sure.

Google
Layout/atmosphere *Convenience store; prepared hot food by counter; two seat window counter Food/drink *Bacon, egg & cheese on roll (salt/pepper) - good

Google
This is what you can expect when you spend, or should I say overspend here. Almost 15mins after waiting for a philly cheesteak on a roll I get a hero and see pic...What is that?!

Brian Henry

Google
Ray’s is everything a bodega should be - great sandwiches, tp and all the sundries we need in the neighborhood. oh. and the requisite bodega cat!

Google
Amazing service and wide variety of snacks

Good portions and the prices are reasonable.

Really good pastrami sandwich for the price

Yelp
Your basic deli, with a pretty decent selection and fair prices. If you're in the area, stop by here.

Alina L.

Yelp
Sandwich had grey salami. past sandwiches haven't been too bad but that was my last straw. too expensive to have bad meats!

Yelp
The joint is robbing customers ... or customers who once made Ray's Deli a regular pit stop in Greenwich Village. Walked in yesterday to order standard rice and beans 'to go' and the counterman told me $11.00!#@! These folks running or owning it today must be new owners because the old owners didn't price gouge like these new folks do?!! I hope these new owners come to their senses or else they'll lose longtime patrons of this deli.

Yelp
My son bought an ice cream and they charged him $4 for the same ice cream his friend bought earlier for $3. He tried to tell the clerk his friend paid $3 for it earlier. I then went into the deli and asked the price and he said $3. I then asked my son to come in and explained the charges him $4. The guy at the register said the other guy is new. Beware of this deli over charging our kids.

Yelp
Good sandwiches. The Manhattan clam chowder had clams in it. The liverwurst and the corned beef sandwiches were good for 7.99. Soup was delivered very hot.

Ben C.

Yelp
Was there this past Friday night it was like 12 bro said only cold cut sandwiches what kind of deli is this and the sandwiches are over priced
google avatar

Yelp
Ray's is price gouging during COVID. They want $19.49 for a 6-pack of Charmin toilet paper. When I explained to them that they are quite literally breaking the law by overcharging by DOUBLE the normal bodega pricing (which admittedly is a little higher than a grocery store), they could not care less. Disgusting practice for a neighborhood deli I've been a customer at for over 15 years.

Yelp
I would of gave them more stars if it wasn't for the raw chicken finger, I ordered chicken fingers and one came in raw, I went back tonthe store to speak with the guy and I was discreet about it cause there's was customers in the store and I didn't want to make a scene, but guy asked if I wanted another order or money back, I definitely got money back cause wasn't gonna order another one, but the guy apologized for what happened, but I really could of gotten sick...
google avatar

Yelp
Food is good here. Very skimpy with the eggs and bacon. Ordered a bacon egg and cheese and it was delicious but very thin. Looked like it was only 1 egg and maybe 2 slices of bacon... they need to step they're game up for the price you pay it should be thicker.

Yelp
I would hive you a zero, but thats not possible so i give you a one. this place is awful, its crawling with bugs and rats, for example, i found a SMALL bug in my burger. and rat droppings in the freezer where the drinks and stuff are, the staff is extremely rude, i saw them yell at multiple kids for supposedly stealing even though they obviously weren't. I've also had bugs crawly up my hand when i was reaching for gum to buy, it was absolutely disgusting, but it was a very popular place, probably because their was multiple schools near by and i usually went around lunch. but ive heard many people including the kids saying they only went to that deli because it was cheaper than fresh2go (which tbh is worth the money go their instead please) thats all for now.

Yelp
Solid deli. Sausage egg and cheese is always great and have even had delicious egg and cheese on a croissant. Staff is always nice and friendly!

Yelp
Let me tell you about my experience with Ray's deli. I called them to order some snacks towards the end of the night, close to 10pm. As I was ordering over the phone, the man was initially very kind... later calling back to tell me me didn't have half the items. After 30 minutes of waiting in deep hunger, I called to see the ETA. He became hostile and so rude and refused to bring the food until after midnight. It would have been nice to know that it was not a restaurant to order from, and after a certain hour I'm left so limited because of this deli. And we all went to bed hungry.

Yelp
I think I need to stick to bagels and tuna sandwiches at Ray's. My last two visits have left me disappointed. The first, a buffalo chicken sandwich I bought before hopping on a train to Philadelphia was pretty lackluster: deli sliced chicken with avocado and a too sweet dijon dressing. I was hoping for some spice. There was none. Yesterday I gave Ray's another try. This time for a chicken breast press sandwich. Again, the flavor lacked. I'll return, but only for tuna sandwiches and bagels with cream cheese.

Yelp
Ray's Deli is a classic bodega , in every sense . You can shop for the basics or order from the hot grill - with customization options . The meat selection offers some fresh combinations and there are many pre-made menu options to choose from. Manager Mike is always very personable and takes feedback to make the service better. Only 4 stars due to the service - some of the staff listens to your orders and questions.. and some of them don't. Depends on the day....

Moran C.

Yelp
This place is SHADY. The total on your receipt, can/will look different from what they actually wind up charging you. Check your credit card or online banking after shopping here. They will only charge a couple of extra dollars per transaction, but it is illegal and shady,
google avatar

Alana T.

Yelp
Neighborhood staple -- great food, great selection, friendly staff. It's the go-to joint for sure

Cise M.

Yelp
Horrible soggy sandwiches , late delivery, always wrong order this is the fourth time now. And they use fake accounts in delivery.com to raise their rating. Check it out either eg c name or peter p after every bad review. And last time they didn't even made the sandwich after the delivery time and they didn't even apologize for it
google avatar

Charlie M.

Yelp
Far a neighborhood deli you can't get much better than Ray's. The staff knows the locals and their regular orders. In addition to deli staples they also have a great lunch buffet that sells out pretty fast during the week. I just wish they were open after midnight.
google avatar

Aviva M.

Yelp
Great toasted cinnamon raisin bagel and cream cheese. Wrapped in foil so it stays warm! Super reasonably priced. This is my go to place when I'm in the area.
google avatar

Sam P.

Yelp
Certainly a cut above your average NYC bodega. The surroundings are not prepossessing, but the fellas behind the grill definitely know what they're doing. I ordered a Medianoche with a bit of trepidation, knowing how easy it is to screw up this Cuban masterpiece, but much to my joy, the pork was deliciously marinated and piled high on a perfectly grilled bun with plenty of turkey, cheese and pickles to go a long with it. Add chips and a drink and you've got yourself quite a lunch for under $15. Well done, Ray's!

J K.

Yelp
Avoid. This place engages in serious price gauging and will charge what they want on a whim. They did it during the blackout, and they're continuing the practice today. I live in the neighborhood, and have for 20 years now. There are much better and honest places with nicer staff. You have been warned...

Yelp
I usually don't take the time to review basic NYC delis, but I am sick of this place and need to vent. Most deli staff are very nice, especially to regulars, but the guy at the register here is a total jerk. After coming in every day for the past 3 months to get my breakfast here I am so fed up with the rudeness of the cashier that I am not going back ever again. I guess he doesn't like the color of my money. I certainly don't like having my food tossed at me every morning.
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
When I came in there was a man trying to get the cashier's attention because the cashier was too deeply involved in a conversation with his coworkers. After the customer paid and left, the workers proceeded to speak in spanish and call him an asshole, amongst many other vulgar things. Fast forward to five minutes later- Although seeing that there now was a woman at the counter, these pigs continued to use obscene language and continued to joke with one another instead of ringing the woman up. That was enough for me. I put my stuff down and walked out of the store. Never again!

Yelp
My fellow colleagues and I have frequented this deli ever since my office moved to the neighborhood last August 2013. In the past year, as we have tried out all the various W. Village choices to grab lunch (or breakfast) from, we have continuously found ourselves going to Rays for a quick sandwich or deli item. The food is good quality, and typical of what you would expect of a NY Deli... unfortunately, without fail - the staff here is some of the RUDEST & HOSTILE people you will ever deal with in the business. Whether its a blank/cold stare as time passes rapidly by while you stand there waiting to have your order taken... or the stern (NASTY) "No" you receive when asking if the have Garlic for your sandwich... this place is 100% the epitome of what is wrong with the service industry. Bottom line, If you are also very miserable and you don't care about being treated with a "Thank You" or being shown respect or a kind tone as you place an order... then my suggestion is continue eating at this hell-hole of an establishment. If you rather have an enjoyable day & not deal with people that are angry at the world - then GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

Celia S.

Yelp
This place is over priced and the staff is just down right weird!! Every time I walk past they are yelling 'come in here--I know you want to' and when I actually do, they are always weirdly grinning or giggling! I've come here a few times when I need a little bit more selection than what King's has--but lately its really not worth the bother or money! They have all of your last min items and a large selection of deli items-haven't tried their sandwiches nor would I think to after the last review!! If you need something simple I would check out King's they seem to be much more reliable!!
google avatar

Josephine S.

Yelp
The delivery is usually incorrect and the wait time is very long. When I called to complain about a wrong item, they told me they would send the right stuff, but never did. When I called again an hour later, they hung up on me. A shame, because the deli meat there is indeed delicious.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
Pretty straight forward and basic NYC deli. I come here sometimes for the morning bagel and occasionally lunch. The bagels are decent though I've certainly had better. The lunch is your basic spanish food (rice and peas, chicken, beef, plantains, soup). I've had them all at least once and its decent but nothing special. This is a good place to go if you happen to be in the area and need a quick bite. They also have a decent sized grocery section where you can pick up some basic snacks, toiletries and canned foods. Overall a good place.

Jaimie L.

Yelp
Absolutely horrible. I ordered the most basic of sandwiches and took one bite and it tasted gross. Then I opened it up and found this weird brown residue on my cheese. Not sure what it is. Also I'm pretty sure the cashier over charged me. Never go here. Don't be lured By their cute bodega cat.

Yelp
Love my Ray's Super deli! I'm still trying to figure out which one of the guys is super Ray but I think I have it narrowed down. They have my favorite deli coffee ever, it used to be $1, now it's $1.50 ---still worth it though! I don't even have to say a word anymore, I just nod at "super ray" and he hands me my coffee and I give him the money, yep I'm a VIP :) They make a good sandwich too, with way too much meat though - our dog is always happy to get the extras :) They also have a good selection of other stuff you might need for a quick pick-up, cigs, beer, dry foods, milk, pet food, etc. The place is always very clean too!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
I've used Ray's Deli as my personal kitchen - going in almost every day for 15 years. I only let Eduardo make my deli food - he cares...
google avatar

Talia R.

Yelp
Hazelnut iced coffee here is a little revelation. Kind of my Hudson coffee secret, second only to San Panino's. Who even thinks to order iced coffee at these places to begin with? But I digress. I love the friendly staff, the random assortment of Kinder at the counter, general reliability of the turkey sandwich.
google avatar

Brian K.

Yelp
My coworkers and I eat sandwiches from Ray's multiple times per week. They're hard to beat for the price. Speaking of which, they recently lowered the price of nearly all their sandwiches from $6.99 to $5.99. They are fast and the portions are generous. I'm 6'2", 190# and a grilled chicken club fills me up on its own. The ingredients are good quality and fresh. They take credit/debit cards and don't charge extra to do so. They will deliver a single sandwich at no additional charge (you might consider a tip though). It's a convenience store, so there's no seating.

Michael D.

Yelp
Second time I was here and second time I was overcharged compared to what was the price listed. First time I complained about it and got money back. Second time I said nothing and walked out the door knowing I'll never come back. Food is good but light.
google avatar

Devin B.

Yelp
I have been going to Ray's for three years now. The food has stayed consistent and I have yet to have a bad meal. Favorites are the chicken ceaser salads as well as the chicken cutlet sandwich. Flavorful food and authentic spanish food for lunch. I use them for team meals often. Def recommend.

Eric S.

Yelp
I order frequently from here. It's definitely a go-to. They may not always get my order right but the food is still good and the prices are reasonable for the area. I had several different dishes and they were all good. I would recommend.
google avatar

Jim A.

Yelp
Messed up my order pretty bad (ordered buffalo chicken sandwich with mayo, received turkey sandwich with no mayo). Not a bad turkey sandwich but definitely pricy for a deli sandwich. My potato salad, soda and sandwich came out to $15.
google avatar

Alex V.

Yelp
Most disgusting iced green tea I've ever had in my life. I was shocked that it's possible to ruin it that badly. There was a really gross aftertaste, and I just couldn't finish, let alone have more than three sips. I knew it was a mistake to get iced green tea from a place like this, but since they did have it, I figured it would be decent at least. Never again.

Jackie G.

Yelp
Always missing an item all the time! Oh don't bother calling back to complain, the client is always wrong for them. If you don't like it they will tell you to go somewhere else. They just don't care taking care their clients with dignity and respect.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
Just as an FYI: I have noticed the clerks tack on an extra dollar or two to a lot of items and no one looks at thier receipts. This has happened many times. Stopped going cause of this.
google avatar

Kevin K.

Yelp
Terrible. Food was inedible. Gray lox with moldy cream cheese. Called and they were complete jerks. Eat here at your peril!!
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
The food wasn't bad, I got a Chicken Cutlet BLT as a wrap, it was a good size and warm. I ordered it as a combo though, and it said it came with fries, but I never received any. Also asked for ketchup for onion rings that I also ordered but didn't get any of that either.
google avatar

Austin V.

Yelp
Expensive. You want beers? It's 12$ for a 6 of bud light, $15 minimum for a port (red stripe) etc... Manhattan is expensive but this place added 2-3 more to everything you buy.
google avatar

Marisol C.

Yelp
The food was good Bc Spanish people work there but the owner is not friendly unless he "Mike was having a bad morning at 6:30am really oh yeah he was paid the bread and the cookie man...lol...they seem more nicer than Mike....My bad he ONlY greeted the regular customers....I ask him with that face he had if it's okay to stay there to eat my breakfast that I paid $10 for he "Mike said not here at the counter back there with a nasty attitude...to get burn by the steam...its a shame my co workers order from them...he just lost a customer Bc Mike is a jerk

Wang E.

Yelp
GODDDD PAUL H!!! Steal all my pictures. I didn't even get a chance to post my own pics up. Grrr. Ok, we visited NYC so that my little sister could auditioned for J.Y.P. It happened to be in the MTV building along Hudson. Since we were waiting in line, and haven't had breakfast, we decided to go look for local restaurants. Approx 10 minute walk we found ourselves Ray's deli. Unlike Boston, NY has a WHOLE LOTTA DELI, EVERYWHERE. The workers were not that friendly when I asked what they recommended. They told me to get the one of the specials. It was not special so I could not remember the name. You could look in the pics Paul H. posted above and look at my bites, lol. He ordered grilled chicken with stringy cheese. Again, this place is not that wowwy, and did not blow my mind at all..

Jeff W.

Yelp
HOLY MOLY their sandwiches are huge. I just ordered a hero for 8.45, including an entire order of fries and a drink. I could only eat half of everything. Enough for 2-3 meals per person - and definitely solid sandwiches.... Highly recommended.
google avatar

Greg K.

Yelp
My go-to deli. (Delivery too). Great big sandwiches and surprisingly good prices. Good selection of other eats as well.

Matthew H.

Yelp
No frills kinda place. Don't expect the nicest service, but that's not really expected at delis like this. Overall food and selection is good for the price! I would highly recommend some of the hot food in the back. It's mostly spanish/cuban influenced and the pulled pork is ridiculous. Try it over beans and rice or get a cuban. It's very filling and delicious!

Alycen H.

Yelp
I got food poisoning from the tuna salad or eggnog - was throwing up in the morning and had to call off work. Plus the sandwich was served on thin burnt bread and was $6. Not a happy camper
google avatar

T. W.

Yelp
I live very close by so go here about once a day. It's like a nice(ish) NYC bodega. Sandwiches are great and super cheap. Great neighborhood deli. Good place if you need to run in and just grab some basic staples as well.
