Salvador’s Afro-Brazilian Culinary Culture Is Thriving — Here's Where to Go

"A seaside restaurant in Bahia, Brazil, known for its Bahian cuisine and daily-caught seafood. It serves dishes like moqueca and is a spot for cultural preservation." - Kayla Stewart Kayla Stewart Kayla Stewart is an award-winning food and travel journalist. Authentic Salvadorian food accompanied by the best sea views and live music next door! Food portions are extremely generous and are all accompanied by rice, beans and tapioca flour. Seafood stew dish is well cooked, though a bit mild for my personal taste. Drinks options are limited but not a deal breaker. The only downside is that the Mixed seafood stew is only available for 2 pax.

I really didn’t want to write this review. Let me first say that we had an opportunity to meet thee Dona Suzana and she was so lovely and sweet. But that’s where the goodness ends. This place is not worth the hassle it takes to get to. Honestly, the worst mocqueca I’ve had in Brasil. My suspicion is that Suzana is no longer cooking the food, and if she were, it’d be much better. I have nothing to base this assumption off of, so take it with a grain of salt. But what really blew me was the service. When I tell you our server never spoke to us and had the worst attitude I’ve ever experienced in a dining establishment. I don’t go overseas expecting American service. I don’t even particularly care if you’re “nice.” But it’s just plain rude to not speak and act like we’re bothering you. For that kind of rudeness I expect the food to be ten stars, and it wasn’t. And the view is also overhyped. This was by far my biggest disappointment in Salvador. I would not return.

Over rated & over priced . Mixed pot only have shrimps and fish. Drinks tasteless.

After watching the Netflix show, we wanted to visit the restaurant to see if it was as good as it seemed. It was definitely worth it. The restaurant is located in a cute little kind of favela neighborhood by the sea, with a lot of cool street art and with an incredible view. We ordered the shrimp moqueca and we absolutely loved it, it was incredibly tasty. For reference, we paid 70 reais for it and it was for 2 people, which I found it reasonable as it was a huge portion. It’s by far the best spot we found in Salvador and I can only recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the authentic food from Bahia.

Amazing view paired with great seafood! It is like 8 minutes walk from the street when you can go by car. There are only a few tables there so we didn't have to wait, except for a table right next to the water.

The food isn’t bad, the restaurant is just overrated. We tried the fish and prawn moquecas and weren’t very impressed. We’ve had better ones. While the price is affordable coming from abroad, we just wouldn’t bother with it again. A big point against was the service, no smiles, no interaction or eye contact. While we understand where we are and the context, it still wasn’t good to see girls chewing with their mouths open while serving us.

Best Moqueca de camarão I’ve had so far! Nice view, friendly staff and I also had a good Caipirinha, for which the waiting time was quite long tho because I think they are getting the cocktails from another place. Still a must-visit in Salvador! PS: the portions are definitely sufficient for 2 persons

Known for its appearance on Netflix, this authentic restaurant offers typical Bahian food. Dona Suzana no longer cooks (maybe occasionally) but still shops for the ingredients and welcomes guests inside. I went for a shrimp moqueca plus mandatory cold beer haha. Best to visit with a local or someone from Brazil as this restaurant is located in a comunidade.
