The 9 Best Instant Coffees Out There - Eater

"The Foundation Blend from Reanimator Coffee Roasters in Philadelphia was another one of our favorites on the tasting table, and could easily be among the top three. Foundation is another beautifully balanced coffee, with notes of roasted almonds and molasses." - Oliver Strand

The Best Coffee Shops In Philly

"ReAnimator has a few different locations around Philly, but we like their outpost in Kensington on Master Street best for hanging out and getting work done. The plant-filled space is airy and open, and they have a selection of wine, books, and merch with artwork that reminds us of Keith Haring. Add in the wifi, flaky chocolate croissants, and some of the best coffee in the city, and you’re primed for a productive day." - alison kessler

Yelp
Came in for a quick matcha. We were able to get seating on a Saturday afternoon, though there were several people working there. Matcha was made quickly, no complaints.

Yelp
I loved the vibe of Reanimator Coffee. The inside set up feels very welcoming, and I liked that there was ample seating. On the day I went, it was pretty nice outside too, so I enjoyed that there was outdoor seating available as well. I got an Iced Americano, which was pretty standard but good. I like the reusable cups that the drinks came in. My friend got the Blackberry Sage Tonic, which I also thought was really tasty. I would happily come back here!

Yelp
Love the ambience it's very bright and nice. It is fool a lot of the time so sometimes it gets crowded a lot but the Coffee is great. I usually get a hot vanilla latte and it's great.

Yelp
If you work from home and need a break from home, you'll find it here. Pretty diverse, staff is nice, music is low, allowing got a good workspace. Their donuts are pretty great too!

Yelp
See photo below. (But since yelp requires 80+ characters: Coffee good. Espresso good. Pastry good. Service good. Haven't tried their yogurt parfait, probably good.)

Yelp
Stellar coffee and friendly, chill baristas. The other day, when I was microdosing on shrooms, I became deeply engrossed in the progress of the climbing plant that has nearly scaled the wall and is working its way toward the exposed poured-concrete roof beams. You can also do perfectly normal stuff there, like meet up with a friend, work on a laptop, and the clientele is respectful, so you won't feel like you're in the middle of someone's stressy work call. That goes for the baristas as well; they keep shop talk to a minimum, and take the time to chat it up with customers if they feel like it. A model cafe, imho.

Yelp
Wow I think this spot may b my fav cafe in philly! Ive literally only been here twice lmao but both times have had nothing short of a perfect experience. First time was at the end of last spring semester i came to try the seasonal espresso lime mojito something specialty drink and the barista warned me that it was controversial so they wld be happy to make me another drink if i didnt like it. Shld have heeded the warning but they came up and asked what i thot and when i told them it wasnt really for me they made me their specialty salted vanilla latte instead (for free!) which to this day is one of the best coffees ive ever had. This review is getting long but i just had to share that story bc that was such a nice thing for someone to do and ill forever remember it. This time my friend and i came to work and we tried their seasonal peppermint mocha and rose cardamom latte which were both amazing. So flavorful without being overbearing at all -- still felt light and delicious with a well roasted bean. Especially the hot rose cardamom was incredible. The ambience of this place, set so well by the decor, the kind people, and the tasteful for-here cups make it such a good place to work if u can snag a seat. Am definitely going to try to frequent this place more in the future

Yelp
Cute cafe! I went inside because a friend of mine mentioned they had beignet but she forgot to mention that it was a beignet donut. So I was a little bummed to learn that it wasn't the beignet that I was expecting to eat but the donut was really good. Light, fluffy and sweet. I wasn't a fan of my ice coffee it was a salted vanilla latte. I spent $10 for everything. I would totally go back, I would just try something different. Service was okay the gentleman working the cashier registered suggested the latte.

Yelp
Service with a Sneer! Three times I've been here and have been met with a look of disgust rather than a hello. This time in particular, the cashier was particularly annoyed when I entered because she was chatting with her friends and I was waiting to order. After placing my order, she immediately looked at them and rolled her eyes and grimaced. The coffee and atmosphere are fine but not worth feeling like your in high school getting bullied. This was my first time eating in and when I couldn't find the bus tub for my dishes I brought them to the counter to ask but before I could the other barista scolded me and showed me where it was. I said sorry and they said "uuuhh yeah". I've been in the Philly restaurant industry for years and am blown away by the amount of hostility. Sorry the indie band didn't work out!

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee shops in Philly, I absolutely love their vanilla lattes!! I tried both the ginger latte and regular vanilla, but I prefer the regular vanilla iced lattes as I'm not too big of a spice fan. The beignet donut was good: pretty soft and not overly sweet, but I didn't think anything stood out to me about it. It is nice to pair with the coffees though! (I think a hot coffee would go really well with it honestly). Their latte art is well done, and great cafe vibes inside!

Yelp
service is wild.. like wow. so rude. it sucks when you go out of your way to support a place and enter with a very positive attitude but leave feeling like you were just emotionally slapped across the face.

Yelp
LOVE this spot in Philly!!! Ambiance is perfect to lock in and study. Workers are nice and service is fast. Only sad part is sometimes the cafe is too busy, there are no seats. Coffee is DELICIOUS! So smooth, I could drink my cup in one gulp. Takes PATIENCE to not.

Yelp
Coffee shop outside the Ucity area! The 2 drinks we got were so yummy and I love their special flavored lattes. Every time I've come I've never been disappointed, One of my fave Philly coffee spots :)

Meaghan S.

Yelp
Coffee and service is wonderful but holy cow the music is god awful. It sounds like a Mario Cart soundtrack and it's way too loud for how small of a place it is. I heard other tables discussing the music choices the few times I've been here. It really ruins the cool vibe they have going on. Please reconsider the music choices and sound level!

Yelp
Note: If you want to stay in the cafe you have to provide proof of vaccination, otherwise you must get it to go. Really good cafe with some seating and a really solid cappuccino. Order: Cappuccino & Chocolate Croissant About: $8 Review: ReAnimator has a few different locations but this one specifically has some very good seating, though not a lot of it, to sit and do some work. This was really helpful because I had several hours of stuff I needed to get done on the computer and they had plenty of electrical outlets and spaces available. At the moment you do have to provide proof of vaccination in order to stay in the café, which I realize will prompt mixed responses but it is how they're doing things. The cappuccino was really solid, very standard and while there wasn't anything unique about it, it was very good. The chocolate croissant was...fine. The croissant itself was excellent but there wasn't a ton of chocolate and it sort of left me wanting a more chocolatey, chocolate croissant. I can definitely see how ReAnimator is a go to choice if you were anywhere nearby. While parking is always sort of challenging there actually seemed to be plenty of spots available in the surrounding streets so it wasn't nearly as complicated as some places we've been. I could definitely see us revisiting if we were in the area.

Yelp
Such a quaint location in the heart of this neighborhood. Outdoor and indoor seating provided to enjoy a fresh brew. Staff was super friendly and even offered for a sample of the weekly drip coffee to sample first, you know how that always gets me :) Reanimator is located all throughout Philadelphia but glad that it came to this part of town!

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick caffeine kick and found this hidden gem! [Ambiance] Very chill and mellow. Natural sunlight coming in through the window. Even outdoor seating. Love the open interior. Nice place to chat with friends or have some meditative me-time. [Service] Both workers were super super sweet and nice. Calming presence. Not even an ounce of pretentiousness. [Drinks] Only really tried the hot coffee black and I enjoyed it. Tax is not included in the cost of the drink. A bit pricey, hence the 4/5 stars. $3.24 for a large hot coffee.

Yelp
I'm a really big fan of the space. The windows are large so a lot of sunlight comes in, and even though there aren't too many tables, there's always a couple of seats open. It tends to be busier during the weekend but if you go early, there will definitely be open seats. There are also a couple of tables and seats outside if the weather is nice and if you would rather enjoy your coffee outside. Music tends to be on the loud side, so I would bring noise canceling headphones if you're trying to get a lot of work done. The bathroom is clean too which is a plus! Coffee is pretty solid. There are also pastries if you want something with your coffee, and apparently the avocado toast is good (according to a friend). I like to get the almond croissant along with coffee if I'm staying to study. Bottom line is, this is one of my favorite cafes in West Philly!

Yelp
Great, quiet + intimate coffee shop tucked away on a quiet block in Spruce Hill. Both times I have visited, I have gone with a straightforward drip coffee and enjoyed the flavor immensely. On our recent visit, my husband got a latte, which was one of the tastiest lattes i've ever tried (I had to sneak a sip, look how beautiful it is!) I should find myself at Reanimator more often...

Yelp
This has got to be the new best coffee in town. Move over Ultimo, Joe, Rival Bros; this is the best game in town! The cafes are nicely decorated with plenty of open space and seating. The coffee has a bold and balanced roasted flavor. It's very distinct and somewhat familiar in a great way. I would recommend anyone in town to visit any of Reanimator's locations!

Yelp
I study here for a bit every Sunday. Usually there's enough seating in the mornings (although it can get crowded). The baked goods are decently priced ($3/4). Their drinks come with latte art and their hot chocolate is a bit too sweet. The staff are good and seem like cool people.

Yelp
Employees were so nice and the atmosphere was very comforting! Not to mention the coffee was so good! Really recommend this place:)

Yelp
Let's start with the positives: this is a wonderful place to hang out and do whatever that thing you do is. I write every day and it was wonderful writing to word count - nice music in the background and wonderful light coming in. The staff was super-nice as well. Unfortunately for me I'm not a fan of the coffee - I drink coffee (not lattes) and their house blend is too floral and perhaps soupy for my tastes. Great experience, okay coffee.

Iris B.

Yelp
I am not by any means a "coffee person." I honestly never understood why people pay more for x type of coffee. To me it usually all tastes the same: like coffee. That changed with reanimator. Their coffee is so "smooth" it's actually enjoyable even if you're not a big fan of coffee drinks. I like the mocha and the holiday latte best. I tried a plain cup and I actually wished I hadn't put the creamer in it! First time that's ever happened. The staff are friendly and the environment is all chill relaxed vibes. My only wish is that I could get bigger sizes of the latte but honestly, that's just the American glutton in me: their sizes are totally on par with Europe/uk. New fav local coffee spot!

Yelp
I go here probably once a week and have never had a problem with their drinks. The iced coffee is strongggg but perfectly brewed. I also enjoyed their wide selection of unique teas and they will gladly ice any of them for you. I changed up my order and got a shaken matcha latte which was fantastic, especially as a matcha lover. The only issue I have is some of their baristas, i've def been ignored (by accident) when it isn't busy and they don't notice they have a customer and are talking to one another. Otherwise the place is great and they have all their beans if you just need to pick up a great roast.

Yelp
Last week a new coffeehouse opened in my neighborhood, a mere half block away! Very happy to welcome ReAnimator Coffee Roasters to West Philly. They have Espresso drinks, Regular coffee and Coffee pour over ad well as teas, pastries, bagels and donuts as well ad yogurt, bottled juices and water. I love their espresso and tried a bagel with cream cheese today. It was very good. This is bright space, on North side of Pine street between 48th and 47th street. Employees are very friendly. Nice spot to hang out at. They sell merchandise ie their own beans they roast, coffee mugs, t-shirts, etc. I shall frequent this establishment!

Rachael H.

Yelp
I love this place so much. First, I have to shout out the employees because they are all are so nice, relaxed and excellent at their jobs. On top of that, the coffee is delicious, bold and smooth, just the right size, with beautiful latte art and real cold brew. The cafe itself is airy and cozy and nicely designed. Wish it was just a tad bigger on busy Saturdays and Sundays! I live close by so I also give the cold brew cups as gifts to friends when they visit which has a cool design. Love this place, hope it doesn't change!

Yelp
Have you ever had a Pumpkin Spice Latte? No, I mean a real one. Made with actual pumpkin and sugar? Well, let me tell you, it is life changing. The perfect way to start a fall morning, not too sweet, and you can still taste that gorgeous espresso. I ordered online and my drink was ready in the 5 minutes it took to arrive. Handy takeout window and prompt, polite service.

Yelp
After having La Colombe, one wonders if there is any other spring of carmel-chocolate-y nectar from the gods. This coffee is THAT good. And they have wifi! The space is a utopia for diligent students or people who search for a peaceful spot. There's bright lighting from the heavens and lounge worthy seating. One could sit in repose for hours drawing or typing away. My only misgiving was about HOW MUCH someone could feel at home: a young woman plopped her sandals on the floor, and propped her bare feet all over this divine place. But, if you're feeling the yen to zen, come here, a place with no shame.

Nikki M.

Yelp
Not worth your time or money honestly. Ordered a PSL and it wasn't hot. It wasn't even luke warm! It was just warm enough to be considered a "hot" drink. Not very friendly either. I went up a few blocks to a different place (knockbox) and it was great.

Yelp
My go-to coffee spot! Super convenient to my apartment, but more importantly, incredible coffee. I typically go for an iced coffee with oat milk, but their espresso drinks are phenomenal as well. If you're looking for food, get the avocado toast. You won't regret. It's seriously SO GOOD. Most times I've been later in the afternoon, they run out of pastries, so if that's what you're looking for, just be mindful of the time. The pecan cinnamon-sugar swirl pastry it my favorite. Can you tell I've been here a few times? Lol. Make sure to put your phone number in for rewards!

Yelp
Excellent cosy brightly lit environment. Good coffee and espresso. Love their hand pours. Only reason this gets a 4/5 is because of the more expensive than average pricing for everything they sell. But I am still a frequent visitor. Beats all the local chains. Would've given a 4.5 if I could.
google avatar

Frank G.

Yelp
I live around the corner and I really wanted to like this place but the customer service I received today was just abysmal. I don't know who is in charge of hiring but they need to do a better job of ensuring their baristas aren't rude because I will never come back.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
The coffee and pastries here is fantastic. The baristas are always friendly and make my drink quickly, which is always appreciated. The vibe seems super chill, with great sunlight. I can't say I've had time to hang out, but look forward it.
google avatar

Conrad P.

Yelp
Came here twice. Hated it twice. Both times filled to the brim with people who were all uncanny (no diversity and blatant staring, in spite of themselves)--especially awkward that these unanimities were there each visit. Baristas also inept socially, as well as with their trade. Both visits, stared so much without speaking, I couldn't relax. Second visit, latte was lukewarm. Lazy, can't make a $5 latte hot. This shop is low brow. Serves its neighborhood well. Not meant for some folk.
google avatar

Mason B.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of his place. I was super excited when I heard they were opening a location in the building where I live, and they have lived up to their reputation. I'm an almost daily customer. The coffee is always 10/10, the baristas are friendly and good at their jobs, and the vibe is spot on. It's a small place, but you can make yourself at home inside or enjoy a seat outside. They also have Beiler's donuts!
google avatar

Zachary P.

Yelp
Good coffee and atmosphere. Their theming is great. A little expensive, so I only find myself going there occasionally.
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
Been to the other ones and they are all great, some things are a little pricey but worth it, guess the girl with the eyebrow ring was having a bad day because she was the opposite of what a nice person is, oh well
google avatar

Yelp
Moved from Brooklyn to West Philly looking for the perfect coffee shop to fill the void. Reanimator is it! Wonderful coffee and teas with a cool laidback atmosphere. It's very quiet and they play great music and I've made it my ideal study spot!

Al A.

Yelp
Now that I don't live nearby anymore I can reveal the secret..... this place has incredible pastries. The almond croissant is still probably the best I've had in my life. Coffee here is great too. It was a much needed addition to the neighborhood and although it's on the pricier side, the quality totally delivers.

Ann L.

Yelp
Big fan of the cafe! Nice coffee and wide table. I like to study and relax here for a sunny weekend. You can even refill your coffee at a cheaper price. However, sometimes the kitchen smells heavy so when I go out, my cloths need to change. But to me, that's fine, I just keep going there and prepare to move around it.
