The Best Outdoor Restaurants In Ballard - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Red Arrow has one of our favorite coffee shop patios. The whole operation is an open-air garden complete with a lifted garage door, so there are plenty of seating options depending on how chilly you feel and/or how much sunscreen you applied that day. It’s a great spot to get some work done while inhaling fresh air at the same time, and they also serve an excellent sour cream blueberry muffin." - aimee rizzo

Beautiful lush ambiance - perfect for a spring or summer breakfast or lunch! The food was incredible and coffee and tea were delicious. First come, first serve seating on the patio so bear that in mind for larger groups. Definitely more a spot that you walk to versus drive to - street parking is available but limited. Can’t recommend enough!

Found this gem online and had to try. Such an inviting place, you won’t want to leave. When the weather is nice the roll up doors are up. Lots of people remote working, so WiFi must be good. My tiramisu latte was perfect as well as my scone. Highly recommend.

Google
My favorite hidden gem with the most beautiful outdoor garden space. It’s small, quant and the perfect spot to take a friend for a coffee date, get some work done, or take yourself on a solo adventure. The food is amazing, and I constantly crave their breakfast sandwich🤌 I love trying out their crafted seasonal drinks and the fact that they serve Rishi’s high-quality matcha makes me so happy.

Google
Honestly really delicious food and the best customer service. I had an upset stomach and was going to order off menu until I saw the Veggie bowl for brekkie. It was delicious! Quite a lot of food but I valiantly to eat it!! Loved the reco from the staff thinking the sourdough bread would be better than a scramble on the giant bread I saw being served. Almost got lost finding the place. Lots of books and crannies to sit in. Even the rain didn't dampen anyone's spirits. And the coffee was on point! Highly recommend. And wish I'd though to take a picture of my meal!

Google
Outstanding place!! Such a peaceful zen sanctuary with their outdoor ambiance. Great coffee drinks. Also, I was recommended the potatoes for breakfast and WOW!!! Both me and my husband were saying that those are the best potatoes we've ever had in our lives! No joke!

Google
Awesome place and lots of seating. Food is 5/5, coffee is unfortunately average.

Google
I got an iced latte and the French toast. The coffee was good and the French toast was amazingly delicious. The one downside is that I came to work and I could not find an outlet. The WiFi signal was good, but if your laptop is like mine and doesn’t survive long then it might not be a great location for you. It’s very dog friendly and has a lovely heated patio with delicious food so I’m not holding the lack of power against them.

Abigail

Google
I’m constantly impressed by the quality of the food, the professionalism of the staff and the atmosphere here. This cafe adds so much to the neighborhood and I will forever be a fan. Also- outdoor seating, so dog friendly. Two years later, edited to add that Red Arrow is still wonderful. Try the French toast. You’ll be glad you did.

Yelp
Red Arrow is one of my go-to coffee shops. It's always top of the list to bring friends from out of town to show them how great the coffee scene is in Seattle! I usually get a cappuccino and not only is the foam to milk ratio perfect for me, it's also served in a proper cappuccino mug which delights me! Today I got the sparkling matcha lemonade because I biked here from home and wanted something refreshing and it did not disappoint! The food is always spot on too. I love that they use fresh, in-season ingredients for their frittata and it's paired with a perfectly dressed kale salad which makes me feel like I'm the epitome of health. The vibes are also immaculate, there are so many different types of seating to accommodate whether you want to sit inside and get work done, sit in the garden area with a book, or chat with friends by the fire. The staff is wonderful and friendly and they are always quick to churn out drinks and bring out food.

Yelp
I am from out of town and circled the block twice looking for where to park. I parked in a residential neighborhood and fumbled my way around the building looking for an entrance. There is a patio entrance and side lot entrance where the kitchen and canisters are. It was packed on a Tuesday morning. No place to sit. So I waited for my pb&j toast in the side lot outside the kitchen door, on a stoop. The Americano was good. The PB&j toast is another level. I took the first bite and my hair stood on end. When I inhaled the first slice, there was a bite of salt left on my tongue. How do they do that? The initial taste is sweet raspberry, then salty peanut butter but like a sea salt after bite. It's like a Willy Wonka journey of flavor. I don't know. This is incredible. I will never forget it.

Yelp
Dog friendly and really delicious food and drinks! I loved this spot! The servers were friendly and helpful with my allergies. The ambiance is kind of people working or reading or maybe a few friends catching up. There were two other dogs there too. Will be back for that strawberry oatmilk matcha!

Yelp
This place will damage your bank account significantly but it is very good. The outdoor sitting area is nice. I guess you're paying for the vibes? A great place to go if you're not the one paying.

Yelp
This coffee shop/cafe is a hidden gem? Tucked behind Brimmer & Heeltap, it can be a bit hard to spot unless you know it's there. The menu changes seasonally so it's a great excuse to keep coming back! It's also very versatile -- a great place to catch up with a friend or to enjoy a solo date reading in the peaceful garden area. Love that it's indoor/outdoor, although I haven't been in the winter -- I imagine not AS great as summer time when the garage door is open and you can enjoy the fresh air. I was most recently here in September and the strawberry matcha drink was refreshing and not too sweet. The Heirloom tomato toast sounded basic but was far from it! The bacon jam and pistachio complemented it well and it was a flavor explosion! A little messy/hard to eat but incredible and well worth it. I look forward to coming back soon to try some of the seasonal fall items :) Only complaint: I just wish they were open longer! I believe the hours are 7-2 daily. Even staying open an hour longer would be great!

Yelp
This place might be a new favorite. It's a little tricky to find at first. Both my friend and I accidentally walked into Brimmer & Heeltap before realizing the cafe is further back. I got the earl grey matcha which was delicious and not too sweet and the curry grain bowl which was fantastic. The crispy chickpeas and quinoa added a nice textural contrast. You order at the counter and grab your own drinks, but they bring the food to your table. The vibe was low-key and cozy with a mix of couples, groups, and someone working on a laptop. There's a mini split inside and a heater on the patio. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Love this little neighborhood coffee shop and will definitely come back again. The shop is very cute with friendly staff, and both the food and coffee are amazing. The atmosphere is so chill and they put on a fire for the outdoor seating as well which was really cozy. We ordered an egg sandwich & we loved how the egg was so soft. We also enjoyed the salmon toast which the salmon very fresh. Would recommend this spot for anyone looking for a cozy coffee shop with yummy bites.

Yelp
Torn on this review, because the space is awesome, especially on a sunny day. Amazing to get some work done or meet up with a friend. Good menu selection both food and beverage wise. Service is average, they're not jumping to greet you, but seems like that's the trend at most cafes these days so not sure how much value that holds. But the sour note is a 5% surcharge (excluding tip) and the fact that a latte and a breakfast sandwich comes out to $26 before gratuity. The sticker shock is a bummer for something so simple.
google avatar

Yelp
The ambiance is lovely, no doubt. However, I didn't realize the coffee was from UMBRIA. I've tried it before and didn't enjoy it. I wish I had noticed that before ordering. Unfortunately, it was just as disappointing this time. I truly hope they consider a different coffee option in the future. I won't be returning, though--I'm giving one star solely for the coffee, not the ambiance.

Vince I.

Yelp
Quaint place located in a garden setting. Excellent French toast. Good service. Wide variety of items on menu as well types of coffee drinks.

Yelp
First time trying Red Arrow. It's definitely a funky little spot with a tiny seating area near the counter, and about 3 other seating areas, including inside the Brimmer & Heeltap space. I had the egg sandwich which was very good -- generous slab of fluffy scrambled eggs, thick chewy bacon, and a spicy sauce. Ordered at the counter, picked up my americano up there, then they brought the sandwich to me, finding my little metal order number on the table. They had the cool system that automatically determined my name from my debit card, so they called it our when my coffee was ready.

Yelp
Great coffee and a really cute atmosphere! The service was very friendly as well. It's a small cafe with a nice, big patio. They kept the door open so it was a bit chilly inside in December but it's great for a warm day! The fireplace and garden outside is very cozy.

Rebecca P.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem! I moved to the neighborhood and my coworker told me I had to try Red Arrow. The location feels like a secret garden cafe, the fresh treats are always excellent and I love the coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
This remains one of top spots for a breakfast sandwich! The kitchen is so creative with their varying and unique ingredients. This time, it had bacon and a sriracha aioli among other delicious things. It's a very filling sandwich but we also had to try the crispy potatoes, which were perfect to share and came with a wonderful sauce. Complimented well by our oat lattes! sitting in the yard filled with beautiful greenery is so great, especially on a sunny day.

Yelp
Interesting spot hidden behind a restaurant. Pretty much entirely open air and out door seating, so if it's cold and rainy/windy it's not going to be toasty. When I visited it was a bit windy and very light rain--the space heater they have didn't help too much. Would be great in the spring or summer though. Street parking only. I had a cappuccino and their toast with ricotta. The coffee was good, came out pretty fast. The toast was a larger portion than I expected and suitable for two to share; the ricotta was great on the thick slices of toast, but was heavy. Will come back again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
One of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had, I'm not kidding!!! This place was so unexpected and cute. I was in the area so just searched on Google for nearby coffee shops... I loved the little garden outside and the outdoor seating. They had a fire pit going and lots of heaters. You have to walk past that little garden area to get to the back, it's kind of hidden behind the trees. But once you get there it's such a cute little coffee shop! You NEED, I repeat NEED to try the breakfast sandwich with added bacon. Absolutely incredible. I forgot to even get a picture of it cause it disappeared so fast lol.

Yelp
Super cute cafe that's hidden off the street. Came here to get some work done and it was quaint and lovely. I really enjoy the outdoor section with so much greenery around. There's good shade coverage! I got a hot tea and a onion galette and both were super yummy. Prices were very reasonable. The only only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because there's no outlets! So sad. So if you want to come here to get work done, make sure your computer is fully charged. Would totally come back here again to chill and work. Great little spot to catch up with a friend too!

Yelp
Gorgeous decor, chill vibe, delicious brunch, music just right. The service was sweet and the homemade ricotta is heavenly.

Yelp
I had a house sitting gig nearby so I stopped by Red Arrow Coffee to grab breakfast. The cafe has a lot of outdoor seating and some inside as well. Dogs are allowed and there was one hanging out inside the cafe. Staff is friendly and both the blueberry muffin and the coffee was good!
google avatar

Yelp
Lovely neighborhood coffee shop tucked in a restaurant garage. Beautiful and cozy garden cafe vibes. Friendly baristas. I enjoy the latte. I wasn't a fan of the egg sandwich. It was greasy and too savory for a breakfast sandwich. It was also pricey (I think $16). I haven't tried the other food items but will keep coming back for the coffee and vibes!

Paul T.

Yelp
This was our first time here. So delicious! We had the frittata and the cauliflower toast, both vegetarian. We were skeptical when we entered because there was no visible kitchen, but they also own the adjoining restaurant so the food is restaurant-quality.

Maggie R.

Yelp
One of my most favorite places to get a quick breaky (the meal we eat between 6am -2pm), delicious coffee and meet up with a friend or two! They also make great London Fogs if you need to change up your hot beverage in the morn! The place is hidden like a little gem in between two buildings and when you walk through the gate it's like you've walked into a warm and cozy little hideaway. It's always clean and the peeps, aka staff, who work there are helpful and friendly even if you have been there many times and still take too long to order. That never happened to me but I hear things.... Oh!! I forgot to mention that part of the cafe is covered but much of the little tables are outside dispersed so you can gossip away without anyone overhearing you! Just sayin'....Oh! Oh! and the cherry on top is... ta dah, there is a lovely outdoor fire place and a plenty of patio heaters for some colder days. Go try it, you'll like it. Did I mention it's cozy?

Anka D.

Yelp
This is my favorite coffee shop!!! It's my ideallic escape, and I love coming here with my friends. The place is so pretty, with a beautiful ambiance and comfy indoor and outdoor seating. My favorite spot is the little cozy fireplace area, which is perfect during colder days, or the beautiful garden on warmer days. The coffee is rich and delish, their breakfasts sandwiches are amazing, and they offer other great items on their menu. Sometimes when I really need to unwind, I treat myself to a mimosa or two after my coffee ! The community here is amazing, and the people who work here are always so welcoming. Being from Europe, this place reminds me a bit of the coffee shops back home. It's truly a special place!!!!

Christine H.

Yelp
Red Arrow is such a sweet place- always welcoming with a good vibe. Love they serve cafe Umbria coffee- such a Seattle staple and the closest thing to being back in Italy.

Yelp
i love everything about this place . From the delicious coffee , pastries and the wonderful crew. Simply the best .

Yelp
Yelp review Number 99 for 2020! I learned about Red Arrow Coffee from fellow Yelper, Wendy K. Thanks for sharing this notable spot. This is located adjacent and associated with Brimmer and Heeltap in Ballard. I remember the first time I visited solo, I accidentally walked into B&H. The cafe is actually located a little past the restaurant. I was struck at what an amazing, peaceful pocket oasis this was despite being located off a major thoroughfare. Very welcoming, so inviting, lovely aesthetic with the layout of water feature, fire pit, heat lamps, and surrounding plantings. Inspired me of what I could do to transform my overgrown backyard. Red Arrow Coffee had pleasant counter service (no hipster indifference, a big plus!) and adhered to pandemic rules of being masked, tables well spaced, and disinfecting between customers. I had no idea what their cafe hours were as I was savoring my toasted sandwich and on point mocha. Turns out I was there well past closing, had a pleasant conversation with owner, Jen Doak, yet none of the counter staff were shoving me out the gate. Sorry, I try to be cognizant and not be that straggler, my bad. The next time I visited was after a northend doughnut run with Wendy K. This time I indulged in a breakfast sandwich and another mocha. Again, great counter service, amazing ambiance, and of course, enjoyed hanging out with Wendy. She was just at RAC the day before and while we were there, her neighbors were at a table diagonal from us. I don't blame them, such cafes would be an extension of my home. Alas, such cafes don't exist in Shoreline. Eye roll from this near 19 year Shoreline resident. The third time I visited was solo. Again I tried another toasted sandwich, a mocha, and cookies to eat onsite and to bring home. Yes, this is truly not a fluke. Great counter service, tasty food and treats, and spot on mochas. Ballard is home to a wide variety of indie cafes, but Red Arrow Coffee is a true standout with its ability to create such beauty and community during the pandemic. Highly recommended!

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Red Arrow is a must-visit whenever I'm in town. The friendly, upbeat team makes you feel welcome from the moment you walk in, and the inviting vibe encourages you to stay and savor every sip. Their coffee is consistently delicious--don't miss the seasonal maple latte if it's available. YUM!

Yelp
SUCH a cute coffee shop in a tiny hidden garden. The coffee was great and the barista was so nice to modify it to how I wanted. The staff is super nice and friendly. This coffee shop is straight out of a book. Really cute and cozy for a lazy work day. I worked out of here on a Monday and it really helped me get over the Monday blues haha. They have some bakery stuff and sandwiches too and they are delicious.

Yelp
Found a hidden gem in the Ballard area off of NW Market & 6th Ave NW. This little cafe with a cozy garden patio is hidden from the street. Enter through the gate from the sidewalk off of 6th Ave. We visited on a Sunday morning and it was packed with guests, which to me is a really good sign. We ordered two cold brew coffees and one Americano that were absolutely delicious. They serve coffee that is roasted locally by Umbria. For food, we ordered two of the Breakfast Sandwiches with Egg & Bacon, and one of their Ham Sandwiches. Definitely check out Red Arrow Coffee if you're in the area.

Yelp
I've been to Brimmer & Heeltap for dinner and that piqued my interest to the cute outdoor space. As you would expect from a place that is a bit tucked away and off from a "downtown" area, Red Arrow has such a neigborhood/ quaint/ unique feel to it. The outdoor space of Brimmer & Heeltap gets repurposed into "Red Arrow Coffee" during the day for breakfast/ lunch. Even on a rainy day, the covered outdoor space is quite cozy because the heaters are pleasantly aggressive. With that said, I'll definitely come more often during the sunnier days! I got a cappuccino and the smoked salmon toast. While the toast was on the pricey side ($14), after it came out, I could see why. It had a lot of elements and was quite complex flavor-wise. The toast was a modest size but ended up being the perfect portion for me. The cappuccino was top-notch and crafted well though. Though not the best espresso drink I've had in Seattle, if I lived closer, this would definitely become my go-to coffee spot because it is top-tier.

Yelp
Checked out this great coffee shop last Saturday with a friend. We both love checking out coffee shops in town together and can't wait to return. Opened a few weeks ago, located behind Brimmer and Heeltap. Not quite sure why I decided to share this space kind of wanted to keep it a secret but at the same time want it to stay open. Opening during a pandemic I'm sure they have enough struggles. The shop has a large overhead door that opens up to outside, an exterior fire pit and about four or five two tops in a garden surrounding strung with exterior party lights. My friend had a cappuccino and I had a latte with oat milk. They day we went there wasn't the best latte art but really your going to go for the ambiance. From the wall art made of glass plates and bowls, to the beautiful light fixtures and teal bench that runs the length of the wall. We arrived at about 8:45am. Their current hours are 7am-1pm every day. Not a place for big breakfasts of eggs and bacon or sausage. They have morning house baked scones which looked delicious they day we were there they were savory, and muffins, a variety of toasts. I suggest the house made ricotta with honey, generous portion and so delicious. A garden salad with edible flowers and three sandwiches to select from. It feels like an escape from the city, a secret garden as we called. We could've sat there all day. Talking and drinking coffee and tea. When both walked into the space we knew we would back we immediately fell in love.

Yelp
Super cute cafe that's a bit hidden from the street! Red arrow is tucked behind Brimmer and Heeltap, and is super adorable. They have a fair amount outdoor seating with a fire and heat lamps for colder days. They had a pretty good selection of food for breakfast! I got the smoked salmon toast, which was pretty good. I was a bit surprised because I was expecting lox, but it's more like a smoked filet of salmon mixed with the creme fraiche to make a spread. My partner got the egg sandwich which he enjoyed. The egg is cooked so the yolk is runny, and the harissa added a really nice flavor.
google avatar

Shweta T.

Yelp
Very cute and cozy ambiance - very 'aesthetic' as the youths say nowadays. There is a firepit and heat lamps outside so you can be out there even in the cold. I came here two weekend days in a row, and the people I was with and I ordered the following: toast with butter, peanut butter cookie, quiche (x2), smoked ham sammy, egg sammy, golden milk, a regular latte, and crispy potatoes (x2). The people were kind and friendly, and the food came out quickly. The toast was enormous, delicious, and whimsical. The peanut butter cookie was pretty good. The golden milk was savory and quite strong in its spice! Nice latte art. The sammies were pretty good but the ham one wasn't my favorite. Quiche was excellent. The crispy potatoes, though - phenomenal! The real star of the show both days. Very crunchy with a yummy creamy sauce on top. We'll be back!

Kathryn S.

Yelp
I used to LOVE it here. Would come multiple times a week and order a piece of toast and an oat or soy latte. Over the past year and half, I have slowly seen the customer service, food, and coffee go down hill. Many times my latte milk is burnt and the food is cold. I've learned to NOT order online. When I order online, It automatically slots a pick up time for way later than I want. So the food has been sitting around for 20 minutes getting cold while my coffee is burnt. I think some barista education and better communication with the kitchen and servers would help significantly. I miss the coffee and food I used to get with the friendly employees that used to serve it ):

Yelp
Great coffee great scones. Awesome display of cook books and cocktails as well. Nice heating too, great fire.

Yelp
Nice nice place. Coffee art amazing. Had the granola parfait and it was good but not great. Cool people but that's it

Yelp
What an adorable little gem! I've been bored with all of my go to spots so I checked out Red Arrow, which is nestled in the garden space of Brimmer & Heeltap. There is some indoor and covered outdoor space, as well as heaters and a fire. Very cozy vibes. When I saw "thick cut" toast on the menu, my interest was piqued (I love BREAD, ok?!?). I was not disappointed--this was the most giant piece of toast I have ever seen in my life. Positively towering, really, with very liberally applied delicious butter. The coffee was great too (of course, it has to be, this is Seattle!). Service was friendly and fast. I definitely plan to add this place to my rotation!
google avatar

Waverly R.

Yelp
SUCH a cute coffee shop!!! I love the ambiance and how the inside seating is still very open with tons of fresh air. The outdoor seating is tucked into their garden which, in the summer, is bursting with hydrangea! I ordered the ricotta toast and matcha green tea. The tea was just a tea bag, so nothing special there (but the barista was kind and offered me a pot of hot water to take to my table). The ricotta toast was AMAZING! The bread was so nice and I could have eaten it plain if not for the mouth-watering dollop of honey-smothered ricotta! Everything was just a tad on the expensive side, but for the experience and the quality, I'm not mad about it!

Yelp
Love this place. Always spend too much money here. Great spot to work/drink/eat during the day. Bakery items are always on point as are their changing meal options!

Yelp
Love this little hidden gem behind Brimmer & Heeltap Restaurant! Come here for a nice secluded outdoor table for a small bite and coffee treat! The staff is friendly and prompt, and the food is as good as pretty. Tried the cinnamon roll and pâté, both amazing! Coffee is from Cafe Umbria. Nice place to have a coffee date and catch up conversation with friends. Busy on the weekends so come early.
google avatar

Kate C.

Yelp
Very charming cafe and bistro. Their roasted veggie frittata was the perfect warm breakfast on a rainy, chilly Saturday. The coffee was a robust dark roast that paired beautifully with the caramelized root vegetables. We got to sit in the bistro dining room because the coffee house and garden tables were full. It was so lovely to be able to see the kitchen brigade working and take in the lovely surroundings. We will be back for wine and food some evening.

Yelp
This place is SO so cute! Tucked away behind a corner restaurant, you'd never know it was there. You walk along a side path that is a shady, plant-lined pathway with a few tables, into an open space that reminds me of little cute coffee shops in Hawaii. The baked goods are amazing! We got the peanut butter cookie (gluten-free and vegan!) and the cinnamon pecan scone - both excellent and reasonably priced. We also got the sparkling matcha lemonade, which was refreshing and not at all too sweet. The woman who helped us was friendly too, which always makes for a better experience. I won't go anywhere that has surly or impersonal service. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Robyn B.

Yelp
This place is great. Delicious coffee (highly recommend their vanilla lattes and americanos), baked goods (love the scones), and the overall ambiance is awesome--beautiful garden, and the inside feels almost European. Friendly baristas too. Will definitely be back to spend some time in the garden area with a book.
google avatar

Yelp
Holy coffee! So smooth and delicious. The service is swift and friendly. There is ample outdoor seating in a cozy urban garden environment.

Yelp
Delightful coffee shop with outdoor seating and a fire pit tucked in behind Brimmer and Heeltap.

Yelp
I love the location and drinks are pretty good been here about three times in the past couple weeks! Although, service could be better I understand people have off days. I just love the location and ambiance. Definitely recommend if you're in the neighborhood

Yelp
It's funny that I see reviews that say the same thing I was thinking! Taking a power walk w my daughter on a dreary Seattle day and happen upon this little ray of sunshine! Felt like I was walking into someone's garage!. I only had coffee and it was delicious. But I promise I'll go back to try out the fare and libations.

Yelp
Cute outdoor/indoor place. A real place, not just some afterthought of aesthetics. The food and drinks are top notch. Come find it :)

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were in the area for a Facebook Marketplace pick-up (gotta love it), but had some time to kill before our meeting. Of course, we decided we needed coffee. Red Arrow was our second choice (our first choice was extremely packed), and honestly, I'm very happy we didn't go to our first choice. I regret not taking any photos of how aesthetically pleasing and completely adorable this little cafe is. It's definitely a hidden gem. The entrance we came in through was like a little garden with tables on each side of the path. You'd never know there was a storefront/counter at the end. I'm not sure about their indoor seating/if they have it, but the outdoor seating was perfect. I don't think I'd ever want to sit inside if I came here. It was a chillier morning (but a beautiful day), so we snagged seats by the fire pit close to the counter. Their food sounded great, and they had some solid drinks options, but we opted for some simple lattes (with oat milk!). The service was great, the music was great, and the vibes were tooooo good. This is the type of place I want to take everyone I know. It's too bad I don't live closer -- I'd love to come more often!
