Red Castle Rialto - Disappointing Experience After All These Years
I've been coming to Red Castle since it first opened, and I've seen how much effort they've put into the restaurant over the years. I remember when they remodeled, and how the owner, a kind Korean woman, would always greet us with a smile. That's part of why I kept coming back for all these years.
Tonight was my first visit in quite a while, and I was excited to return, but unfortunately, it was a letdown. From the start, we were greeted by a young Hispanic woman as our server, who was overly eager to take our order. She kept coming back every minute, which was honestly pretty intrusive. I politely told her I needed a couple of minutes to look over the menu with my friend, who hadn't been here in a long time, but she just kept coming back. After about the third time in less than five minutes, I decided to just place the order to get her out of our way. Once we did, I didn't see her again for the rest of the meal.
I had to flag down other staff members just to get extra sides, and I really appreciated the busser who kept coming by to change the grill for us. Honestly, everyone else besides our server was great. But the server? Completely dropped the ball. It's frustrating, especially when you've been a loyal customer for so long.
Another thing that really annoyed me--after all this time--was that they still don't have rice paper for the BBQ. Seriously, it's a basic staple for Korean BBQ places, and it's disappointing that they've never added it. Without it, you can't really enjoy the meal properly since you get full so fast from the lettuce wraps. It's a small thing, but it makes a big difference in the experience.
To top it all off, when we got the bill, I noticed that the total for two people was about $69.00, but then there was a $10.00 surcharge automatically added. There was no explanation for this charge, and I'm left wondering if it's a tip or if it's meant to cover staff wages or benefits. Either way, it felt pretty unfair and unexpected. I'm all for tipping when service is great, but I don't think I should have to pay extra just to cover someone's living expenses, especially when the service wasn't even up to par. As a customer, I should be able to tip based on the service I receive, not be charged automatically for something like this.
While the food was still decent--good price and quality--I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon. The service was lacking, and that surcharge was a huge turnoff. I'd rather drive out to Rowland Heights next time, where I know I can expect better service without any surprises.
