The Best Restaurants and Bars on Portland’s Killingsworth Street | Eater Portland

"Despite the hum of the interstate just a block away, the spacious, homey Red E Cafe is an inviting morning oasis. Grab a seat in the sun-filled window or slink into a cozy couch in the back, complete with multiple chess sets. Frequently rotating artwork on the wall keeps repeat visits feeling fresh. The in-house roasted coffee is exceptional, and the tea selection is no slouch." - Nathan Williams

Google
Great place. One of my favorites in the neighborhood. I love how bright the coffee shop is and the open layout in general. The coffee is better than the two closest cafes too me, but it doesn't quite make my Portland top ten. It's definitely a runner up though.

Kevin Smith

Google
Great cafe for classic flavors. Latte was delicious and cream forward. Cardamom cinnamon roll was buttery, with caramelization on the bottom. Strong competitor in a neighborhood filled with cafes.

Google
Like the local art display and nice spot to get some work done. Would only recommend coming here if the owner isn’t there haha. Super pretentious and just seems unhappy to be there and unfortunately cannot steam milk for lattes very well (I thought maybe it was just oat milk she couldn’t steam but it’s all milk). Tried the drip coffee, they roast in house which is cool and have pretty good coffee but they charge $0.75 for oat milk in drip coffee? I get the surcharge for a latte but paying almost $1 for 2oz of milk is kinda ludicrous. There’s better shops within walking distance.

Carter Goff

Google
The barista was kind and knowledgeable, even taking the time to redo my espresso a couple times when it wasn’t pulling satisfactorily. The espresso tasted great. The shop space is large, with plenty of tables that would be well suited to working at, but there’s also some couches and bar seating at the front window that’s nice for watching things happening outside.

Google
How have I missed this place for so long! The tastiest espresso I have had in a while! Today’s Columbian roast has no bitter aftertaste, nice rich aroma, and tartness reminiscent of citris. Gotta go back again soon!

Google
When I first stepped in I thought it was an art gallery you can see some pictured here. The cafe is neat and warm. I was here on a weekday afternoon between 2-3pm and there was plenty of seating. I ate a mushroom cheese biscuit and cappuccino. Both were delicious, the biscuit was so flavorful and flaky. There were plenty of outlets so I could imagine myself working from there. A great place to have a conversation as there wasn't loud music preventing one from doing so.

Google
Good coffee, variety of good drinks with tea or coffee, nice atmosphere.. can work in your laptop or sometimes find an interesting person to visit with

Google
They is a nice little neighborhood cafe! Very friendly staff and they know how to make great speciality drinks! I recommend there iced summer collection! Seems like it is a better place to go to meet someone and not work on anything. Could go either though! I would go back and recommend to anyone.

Yelp
Loved the coffee and pastry. This place has a nice vibe and pleasant people. I like the art too. Anyplace with art and good coffee is a win for me!

Yelp
Decent cappuccino on a quiet Sun morning. Come for the art and plentiful seating, including 3 couches!

Yelp
I'm sure there are more than two baristas, but I always seem to come in when one of the two are working and they are great! I just got into drinking coffee in the last two years(thanks kiddo number 1...) and they have both been super helpful in giving me tips on how to do all things coffee! I treat myself to a drink whenever I go in to get the beans and to see how close I've come to making good coffee...I'm still a ways off, but there roasts all make it a bit better than if I got some store bought beans! If you are looking for a great coffee and a cute place to sit and hang, I highly recommend coming here!

Yelp
Love this coffee shop!! With extensive seating and large menu I love coming here for a drink and to do my work. There is often only one barista but they are always extremely sweet and helpful with recommendations. They often have local artists work on the walls that are gorgeous and add to the ambiance. They have baked goods and delicious non-coffee drinks for the hot summer.

Yelp
And now on to Portland! We had a pretty good cappuccino from here. It was strangely a lil' lukewarmer than most, but still very good. But minus 1 star for allowing dogs inside your cafe. That's just not sanitary (or legal)... and unlike the kids, we actually hate that.

Yelp
Hands down the best latte I had in Portland and I was having at least 1 a day in the city. No other coffee shop in the area could compare. The barista was super chill and took time to prepare our beverages. I tried to get one more on the way out of the city but they were closed by 2! I can't wait to go back!

Scarlet P.

Yelp
love this place! If you're in the area this is the spot I recommend. They have yummy specialty lattes that have never disappointed me. The space is cozy, private, and rustic. The staff is always super sweet and they make things pretty quick and easy.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, great coffee, and a regularly changed selection of local art. Are you... red e for it? (Taylor's Version)

Yelp
I just found this place near work, and I immediately recognized the savory mushroom pastry was from Crema! I already liked them! The lady there was friendly, smiley, and just was seemingly happy with it all. It was quite busy in there ash's she was working hard! So a shout out to her! Nice coffee and goodies! I work just down the street so I'll be back!

Yelp
Appreciated Red E pre-covid, and really appreciate them now. Just moved back after a year away and was desperate for some Portland coffee but honestly super concerned about the lines/gatherings of people I'd seen at other cafes and shops. Walked over to Red E and they have a sign on the door with clear safety precautions--you must wear a mask, do not enter if there are more than 10 people inside already, and upon entering customers must immediately go to the bathroom and wash their hands. I really appreciate the concern for safety of customers and employees alike. Barista was kind and patient and wore a BLM mask. The seasonal latte was good, rich, and not too sweet. I had my first ever coffee soda at Red E (in the before-times) and they still have it on the menu if you want to try something different.

Yelp
This was a pretty nice cafe for doing your work... The music is pleasant.. Plenty of tables and couch space... The place is well lit and the red accent adds to the ambience. Good place for getting work done and friendly barista too! A lot of choices for chai and the coffee was good as well.. We had the carrot pineapple muffin... I dint get the flavor of either but it tasted fine. Hit the spot if you are in the neighborhood and looking for a cafe!

Yelp
Good enough place to go just for coffee . I was a little bummed by the food situation. They had a small assortment of pastries wrapped in plastic wrap. They charge for refills but don't have a place to drop cash. Seemed a bit expensive for plain coffee but it is good quality. Clean bathrooms.

Yelp
UPDATE: I am changing my review from five stars to four. I came back; the music was so loud, that I could not think or concentrate on my work. People could not hear each other talk. Why bother go to a coffee shop of you can't work, study, or have a conversation... ORIGINAL REVIEW: I had forgotten about this place. This coffee shop is as close to perfection as any coffee shop is going to get. They have plenty of tables and outlets, the music is not too loud, and everyone I dealt with was nice. To top it off, my latte was one of the best I have had in a while. It was worth the drive from Gresham... I will drive again tomorrow!

Yelp
Came here on a friend's recommendation and thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Cafe itself had a really pleasant, relaxed vibe. I tried the honey cardamom latte and it was AMAZING! Holy smokes. Even better, I had a zucchini bread muffin to go with it that was perfectly moist and just the right amount of sweetness. Definitely give them a try!

Yelp
Here for the chocolate chip cookie! The Red E Cafe gets theirs from Crema Bakery in SE. My options were Chocolate Chip and a California (nuts and dried fruit), each wrapped in saran-wrap. The packaging causes the cookies to lose a little bit of crunch you find in fresh baked cookies in the bakery, but otherwise travel well. Crema's cookies are already soft and chewy, and they don't lose any of these qualities in transit to the Red E Cafe. The size is above average, and the flavor is traditional: browned, buttery crumb with a deep chocolate balance. Need another upside? At $1.75, they're sold cheaper here than at Crema Bakery. A great place to relax and chow on chocolate chip. PDXCookieJar

Yelp
PLENTY OF PLUG SPACE! Seriously this is huge. I could easily come and stay a while and have no trouble charging my devices. Came in with my friend for a quick coffee. My friend tried the coffee soda (very interesting concept), and I got the cold brew. Service was fast, and it was nice to get a few minutes of AC while we sipped our coffee. Coffee was good! Coffee sode was pleasant, although I don't usually like fizzy things so I personally probably wouldn't order it.

Yelp
Their drip coffee is super hot, fresh, bursting with flavor and I am always happy when I leave. (I don't drink espresso drinks, so I can't say about that.) For $5, I got a ham and cheese croissant that was fantastic --everything I could ever want and not wrapped in plastic. Prior to Covid, I stopped going there because the staff attitude bummed me out quite frankly, and I could go to other cafes with nicer service. But now, I could swear they are nicer but it's quite possibly me who has changed --hiding behind my mask I'm just appreciative of a good cup of delicious hot coffee not from Starbucks. Thanks Red E for powering through (with safety measures in place) and I'm happy to support you with my business.

Yelp
A giant, red, neon e hangs in the glass window storefront of red e cafe. Brick and white walls with hanging art enclose the space, its few busily working patrons, and a variety of open seating. Music is playing at a low, non-distruptive level in the background. At first approach, I asked the friendly barista what a coffee soda sparkler is, since I hadn't seen it anywhere else before. Very simply, it is a carbonated, sweetened, and vanilla flavored ice coffee beverage. I can see why this coffee shop is a beloved study spot, with good drinks and good atmosphere.

Yelp
This is a charming and perfect neighbourhood establishment. It has been here for a long time and adds a ton of value and charm to an area that still has ACTual community. They make so many great originals including a cold brew on tap and some magical concoction from husks. I'll get more details soon I promise but it is A-mazing! Just know they put a lot of care and love into everything they do. Always good quick options for snacks and a nice tea selection as well. I love all the baristas, the space and the vibe. All around this is an awesome perk to living in NoPo and I'm so glad to be a regular in walking distance. Will add some specifics as I go more. Thanks for doing whatchu do Red E!

Yelp
I did not have such GREAT TASTED latte for a long time. 2 thumbs up! Definitely check thus place put. Very cozy as well. Next time I am in the area this will be my coffee stop place!

Yelp
I have been coming to this cafe for the last 6 months, no fail every Friday right at 6am to get some coffee and get some studying in before class. I worked a 60 hr week as a CNA, I take 4 classes and I dedicate the 3hrs before class to study. I have liked this cafe more than coffeehouse five down the way. The woman who usually opens Friday's has always been really pleasant and kind. It really takes that one experience to ruin it. I had gotten here, early like I usually do. 5:55am I waited outside the window in the cold for him to even open the doors while he did work inside. Which is fine, 5 minutes late open isn't a huge deal. He opens the doors, unlocks the gate and starts pulling out the benches. Completely walking in front of me and not even a greeting, like I wasnt even there. I wait a bit. He still doesn't acknowledge me, I ask if I can go inside only cause I was super cold in 33 degree weather. He barely looks at me, still continuing what he's doing, with a response in the utmost disgust he says "sure". Just off the vibe from his answer I knew he didn't want any customers. I answered "it's ok. I'll go somewhere else" This was the worst experience in a cafe I've had. In Portland cafes, I've always experienced very pleasant baristas and most I've held some awesome conversations with. I usually don't leave reviews, even with bad experiences. But from a cafe I had been going to for 6 months every week, I was ultimately disappointed. I get verbally abused, kicked and punched from patients all week, just didn't expect that type of attitude from a barista. Some Individuals don't belong in customer service and I'm sorry that he's put himself in a position where he's working an industry he doesn't enjoy. I wish him and this cafe well.

Yelp
Came here with some friends on a Sunday morning while waiting for a table for brunch next door (at the Bad Habit Room). I opted to get their regular coffee which is reasonable at less than $3 for a cup and $1.50 for refills. My fiance got their cafe au lait. My friends ordered a pour-over coffee and an oat milk latte. Prices were reasonable for everything on the menu except the matcha latte ($5.50? seriously???). When we ordered, we were told we didn't need to give a name, since they just shout out drink orders from the counter. I watched the barista go over to a big insulated hot coffee dispenser and pour coffee into a mug and then serve someone else. She didn't tell me anything about my drink, and they were busy so I sat down. My fiance got his cafe au lait, my friend got her oat milk latte, and then my other friend got his pour over. I kept waiting for my drink, and was turned around facing the barista, making eye contact occasionally and smiling. Finally, after about 10 minutes, I walked up and asked about my coffee. "Oh, I thought you knew, you just serve yourself," she told me, pointing to the coffee dispenser I had watched her use to serve another customer. WHY would I know that? Also, she had seen me walk to my seat and NOT GET COFFEE. Why would I elect to pay for coffee and then not get it? I was annoyed, but went and served myself. I should note that the mugs are not next to the coffee dispenser. The coffee dispenser is next to the counter where you pay. There are not signs indicate that you can serve yourself. Overall I was kind of irritated by this interaction (in case you couldn't tell). Our table for brunch was ready faster than we were anticipating, so I didn't finish my coffee prior to us being ready to leave, but luckily the Bad Habit Room and the Red E Cafe have an agreement that people can bring their cups over without an issue. Everyone else I was with was satisfied with their drink experience. I will note that this was my first time trying an oat milk latte and it was pleasantly nutty.

Yelp
The coffee soda is superb. It is like la croix and cold brew had a caramel vanilla baby. Not too bitter, lightly sweet and very refreshing. I think I found my new favorite drink. I also ordered a breakfast galette and I absolutely loved this savory breakfast pastry. Eggs were soft and fluffy, green onions and ham and cheese made it savory and delicious and the outer pastry part was buttery and delicious. Would definitely come again!

Yelp
I ended up here for hours. I had homework, and I looked on yelp for a place with good seating, and I decided on this place! There was plenty of seating for groups and individuals. I had already had coffee, so I decided on loose leaf tea. They have a large selection to choose from, and they're all on display for you to sniff and decide. $3 for a small mug of tea seems a bit much, but whatever. She handed me the mug with the steeper full of tea in top. I thought it was cute! Unfortunately, I wasn't sure how long I was supposed to steep it for, resulting in an over-steeped bitter tea. Wish they would have given a recommended time when they gave us the reigns. Oh well. Free wifi. I didn't feel rushed to get out, and I'm serious. I was there for 4+ hours! Some gluten free baked goods to choose from as well.

Taylor R.

Yelp
Please do not support this business! I am completely shocked and disheartened at the behavior of what I assume was management towards an employee this morning. This employee was in tears, getting cussed out, and screamed at very aggressively in-front of the entire café. It made it really uncomfortable and awkward for everyone in the general vicinity. I refuse to support a business that treats the people that work for them with such disrespect.
google avatar

Ben F.

Yelp
This is my go-to spot when I'm in North Portland! I'm not a coffee drinker, but the cocoa never disappoints! Tip: there's a chess board at the seating area right behind the counter. If you and/or somebody you know plays chess, play a game or two while drinking your cup. Wish this place also had a location in SE.

James C.

Yelp
Absolutely awful management. I was enjoying my coffee this morning and (what appeared to be) the manager of this store started screaming and being so unbelievably disrespectful. She made a huge scene, yelling at her crying employee. It was a very uncomfortable and awkward experience....
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Very disappointed in what I watched happen here today. I was eating brunch at bad habit and happened to notice an interaction between an (i'm assuming) employee and manager of the red e cafe'. It seemed like a normal conversation although i couldn't make out much of what was said in the beginning, the manager then began to SCREAM IN THEIR FACE for about 10mins, regardless of what the problem and conversation actually stemmed from no one should ever be screamed at in this manner, employee, customer, manager, no ONE, i will not be giving this coffee shop anymore of my time or money when i know that there is such rude and apathetic management running it from behind the scenes.

Yelp
A 6 Star Coffee Shop. This is a DESTINATION place, worth a max ride no matter from where in PDX. I come for an excellent almond milk latte, my wife loves the regular coffee and hibiscus tea. I bring my computer to be in the space, high ceilings, a nicely aged hardwood floor, and changing Art Shows on the walls. Today a new show is featured. Incredible art, one Artist at a time. So I am drinking a great coffee, with a great vibe, in the midst of all this inspiring Artistic Expression. Do yourself a favor and come see for yourself. (K Station max)
google avatar

Josh F.

Yelp
Great little coffee shop that lets you wait for your seat at bad habit. The have great coffee and it's the same that they serve at the bad habit. I had the royal something tea and it was amazing tart but not so tart ur eyes watered but very good. The kids hot chocolate had my boy liking the bottom of the cup it was so good. My wife ordered the chai and it had just the right amount of spice but wasn't sweet enough so one Splenda packet later and it was perfect. The service was great and they were very friendly.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Nice location located near the freeway and in a residential neighborhood. Coffee and service was good, but we felt the location needed some additional character to really be a good place to hang out. I am sure it is more of personal preference...so I would still give it a try if you are in the area.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
The Good: Staff was friendly. Wife likes the muffins, they're from Crema coffee shop and bakery. The Bad: They charge .50 cents if your not buying over five dollars. The iPad is set to automatically tip 20% Not a bad place, but after the fees my small coffee was $4
google avatar

Matt H.

Yelp
Dropped in here before school for a coffee, and I was definitely pleased. Straight up black coffee was tasty and got me beaned out for my class.
google avatar

Felice K.

Yelp
Why are the delicious local pastries from Crema each WRAPPED IN PLASTIC? They don't send them to you wrapped in plastic, and I ate my morning bun on a plate sitting in your lovely coffee house, there never needed to be any plastic. I won't eat here again, that sort of needless waste drives me nuts. The latte was fine, nothing special.
google avatar

Don B.

Yelp
I love coffee. It's no mystery that I've grown up in the Pacific Northwest during the first coffee renaissance (that brought espresso to every street corner). My long-time relationship with the brown bean has been a beautiful one. Living in Portland, the epicenter of the second coffee revolution - well, it has really just taken my love for coffee to the next level. Finely tuned roasts coming from small farms via direct trade brewed by baristas who see their work as a craft. Yeah. it's good stuff. Coffee is not just a caffeine delivery vehicle anymore, it's the end in itself. And I savor every sip. That's why I dig places like Red E. They're doing it right. Using carefully-selected micro-roasters like Coava, pulling shots with care, serving up straight shots with sparkling water to spark the palate, and otherwise providing a chill atmosphere for getting some work done. You can really tell where a coffeehouse focuses their energy - be it the space itself, making fancy candy-like concoctions, or a simple, minimalist focus on the espresso itself. Red E definitely falls into the latter. I've had a few shots here, and they have been quite good. I don't roll to this 'hood often, so I don't spend a ton of time up in here, but it's a good spot and they make coffee I trust. They don't just kick out caffeinated cups or overpriced milkshakes, they care a lot about what they are serving. I definitely will get cracked out here when in the hood.
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
I haven't yelped in a long, long time for numerous reasons, but the gratitude I have for red e compels me to throw my hat in the ring for them. i've lived within blocks and have patronized them for a year, and I can only remain yelpsilent for so long. also, I've been reading for 90 minutes and I need a break. red e is the coffee connoisseur's shangri-la. the familiarity of hardwood nicked by chair legs, the sym/caco-phony of an expertly pulled drink, and damn great music lull you into a warm sense of coffee shop home. at the same time, the repurposed wood bar, the quality of the coffee (local!), the friendliness and knowledge of the baristas, the singular brick wall, and the rotating lineup of not-shitty art all signify that this is better than home - it's a homey paradise. space, taste, and, most of all, we the customers, are valued here. in the land where homegrown coffee shops are a dime a dozen, red e is gold. delicious, beautiful, caffeinated gold.
google avatar

Robert H.

Yelp
Red e has been roasting their own beans for some time. They are distributed to other cafes as well. Their newest innovation is carbonated slightly sweetened coffee, on tap, served over ice. It's rediculously good and may tempt those who don't usually enjoy coffee.
google avatar

Tim E.

Yelp
Today, when I visited, the only interaction the barista said to me was "$2". No "Good Morning", "How can I help you?", or "Thank You". Other reviews here call out friendly service, but that's not what I experienced. I only wanted a pastry and didn't spend much, but you can still acknowledge another person is standing there... right? I won't be back. Poor (no) service and only a small plastic-wrapped selection of pasties. There are plenty of other options in this area. Don't bother with this place - they won't even care whether you come back of not.

Lindsay Z.

Yelp
They're coffee is pretty decent but they're super slow. They only have one person working usually and he only serves one person at a time which makes the whole moving through the line process very long.
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
I have become a regular a Red E, and not simply because of convenience to my kids' pre-school. The coffee is incredibly consistent and the faces are ALWAYS friendly. Having easy access to Coava is a dream. I'm so happy to have discovered them.
google avatar

Amber P.

Yelp
Spacious and brightly lit, this cafe is a great place to work, with plentiful plug-ins and wifi that works. There's a cozy corner for chatting with friends, too. The music is usually pretty good, but not too loud. The coffee and tea menu is simple and good, too.
google avatar

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
When entering "red e" cafe the first thing you may notice is the beautifully open, authentic space with gallery style lighting directed at the walls. Where many cafes are short on seating and claustrophobia may ensue during the busiest hours, the red e maintains the intimacy of a small hole in the wall coffee shop while simultaneously providing plenty of space and sectioning for whatever cafe atmosphere you enjoy most. Whether it be a street gazing "window bar" to people watch, a more standard table and chair combination, dimly lit Moroccan style seating, outdoor seating, a large "barn table" for a meeting, or even sitting right next to the Baristas to watch the art of coffee implemented there is something for all cafe goers alike. Located in yet another upcoming neighborhood of North Portland resides a new gem for the specialty inclined coffee connoisseur. In a city where Stumptown Coffee Roasters dominates the overly saturated coffee market "red e" goes against the grain by serving award winning Chicago based roaster Intelligentsia coffee in addition to the outstanding exclusively single origin micro-roaster Coava Coffee Roasters. Whether a visit is exclusively for a unique coffee experience, a knuckle down study session or a work related meeting place, "red e" is doing something new, different and deserving of becoming a staple of the Pacific NW coffee community.

Yelp
Idk why but my coffee always tastes watered down and my drinks always have a lack of flavor. The 2 stars are really for the chocolate croissants which are HUGE and so delicious
google avatar

Ariana J.

Yelp
Love this place. The servers are lovely people, they offer both high quality classic beverages and unusual house made delicious drinks. Very comfortable neighborhood atmosphere.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Great start to our trip in Portland. I wanted to show kam what Portland coffee was like and he was impressed to say the least. They even had chess boards so I'm pretty sure we hung out there for two hours. They added a unique twist to their shop by having coffee on tap (I know). They have three different kinds: iced coffee, coffee soda, and coffee tea I believe. They told me they are the only place that does this. They were very helpful and we got a chocolate/caramel mocha and a coffee soda. So, so good. They even knew how to draw the leaf on top. I highly recommend this place
google avatar

Geoff D.

Yelp
Very friendly service. The big windows and chill music makes this a nice place to get work done. Try the hibiscus iced tea
google avatar

Rafe P.

Yelp
This is a nice space in NE Portland with plenty of tables to work at and a nice open space. The coffee was good, friendly service, and pastries from Crema. But - they individually wrap all of their pastries in plastic - even if they are eaten there. It seems like a huge waste, generates lots of non-recyclable trash, and makes the food look less fresh. With so many good options in Portland, I'll skip coming back until that practice changes.

K.M. P.

Yelp
Do you need to GET SH*T DONE? Red e Cafe is probably the best place in town to prop up your macbook and use some complimentary Wi-fi. This is a really cool space that feels like an art gallery (probably because it is) and has plenty of seating - the many small tables type of seating because they kind of cater to the macbook + free Wi-fi crowd I just described. This is probably due to its proximity to PCC Cascade, I'm assuming. The coffee is full-bodied and tasty, the staff are fun, and they have a good selection of pastries. The last time I was in here there was a kitty sleeping on the back sofa who would wake up every so often to jump up on my lap or politely tap my shoulder for pets. I love this cafe.
google avatar

Linda N.

Yelp
I'm pretty picky about where I can study. This place is spacious--they have a lot of outlets, some neat art on the walls to check out, quality coffee, and good service. There's table seating and couch seating. I like to take breaks and roam around a bit when I study. Recommended! Tip: $5 min. credit card charge.

Yelp
This is a wonderful cafe! I came 2 days in a row while attending the Farmhouse and Wile Ale fest! I ordered just a standard black Americano, I sipped on it for about two hours, nice woodsy balance to the roast they used and not very acidic which I appreciate! Great subtle cacao and tobacco notes that I live in a good bean! I will be back! Ps. I had their yummy zucchini bread muffin glazed with orange....OMG it was big, fluffy and hearty! And the orange was not too overpowering! Yumm yumm!
