Red Herring is a stylish, bi-level gem in Downtown with vintage flair, featuring a delightful New American menu and killer cocktails—perfect for any occasion.
"Red Herring in Downtown is now offering lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m." - Farley Elliott
"Red Herring is another just-OK restaurant in the sea of just-OK restaurants that occupy the busy Historic Core of DTLA. This place moved from Eagle Rock to Downtown at the end of 2018, and this new version does have some things going for it: The cocktails are killer, the space is beautiful, and even your pickiest friend will be able to find something they want from the menu. The problem is the food, which isn’t bad, just mostly forgettable. Everything from the pork belly with grits to the ricotta toast to the duck confit on a scallion pancake is just… fine. They do have one fantastic dessert, though: A chocolate torte with cocoa nib salsa, which is worth the visit alone. So come here for a low-key date to sit at the bar, eat chocolate torte, and drink cocktails - just make full dinner plans someplace else." - Brett Keating
"The folks behind swanky Eagle Rock dinner spot Red Herring are pulling the plug (for now) on their Colorado Boulevard restaurant next month, as they plan to focus their time, money, and staff on the upcoming opening of a new location in Downtown, which should open next to the Whole Foods later this year." - Farley Elliott
"Cozy neighborhood spot Red Herring is on the move, landing a prime second location in the thick of Downtown, right by the bustling Whole Foods. Red Herring is the work of husband and wife team Dave Woodall and Alexis Martin Woodall. She’s a highly-regarded television producer by day and front of house star by night, while the long-tenured Woodall runs the kitchen. Together the pair has made a charming home for themselves along Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock these past few years, working a straightforward menu of new American classics like pork chops for dinner and eggs benedict for brunch. Now the Woodalls plan to bring much of that same menu to Grand Avenue in Downtown, opening in spring of next year at Eighth and Grand, around the corner from Bottega Louie and a few doors down from Fundamental. The 3,300 square foot space is meant to act as an anchor restaurant tenant for the mixed-use building, which means Red Herring will offer all-day service from coffee and eggs in the morning to late night post-dinner cocktails. Unlike Eagle Rock, this location will offer a full bar as well as a sidewalk patio. Don’t expect an arrival just yet, though; reps for Red Herring say an opening in spring of next year is most likely." - Farley Elliott
