The Best Pizza Places in D.C. | Eater DC

"Red Hound Pizza recently brought Roman and Sicilian-style pies, focaccia sandwiches, salads, and desserts to the popular Maryland neighborhood. A seasonal, rotating menu of square pizzas comes by the slice or whole pie. Co-owners Andrea Alvarez and Charbel Abrache, the former head pastry chef at Seylou Bakery, swear by freshly-milled local flour to create the ideal dough. If you drive: Feel free, as Takoma is still blessed with good parking." - Tierney Plumb

I got to try the margarita, pepperoni, veggie, and meat pizza. Each one was delicious, I honestly couldn't choose a favorite. All the flavors went really well together and the crust was excellent. Probably the best pizza I've had in a while. The ice cream was also great! I'll be back.

Google
The pizza here is truly special — unlike anything else around. I actually met the owner at Seylou, my favorite bakery in town, and found out they use flour from there. The crust was incredibly flavorful, and we really enjoyed it. The toppings were carefully chosen and complemented the pizza perfectly. Worth a trip to Takoma for this. Extremely kids friendly.

Google
Delicious pizza, extremely seasonal ingredients that are put together in amazing topping combinations. Hits the spot! The soft serve ice cream is incredible too, it was vanilla with roasted peaches and lemon verbena but I think it rotates often. Super fresh season salad as an option as well. The spot is owned by a wonderful local family. Nice quiet patio in the back too.

Google
Fantastic pizza. I am generally a New York style pizza person, but Red Hound's sourdough square pizza delivers something different and satisfying. The sourdough is phenomenal. The sauce is savory and tangy. We had a pepperoni pizza and a bacon, onion, and mushroom pizza. Both pizzas came with fantastically balanced flavors. We had a side salad with fresh greens and a bright refreshing mustard vinaigrette. The service is friendly and eager to make you feel welcome. This is our new Friday pizza spot. We're looking forward to trying new pizza specials.

Google
My son lovvves this pizza and insisted on us writing a five-star review! He says there is just enough of everything, the right amount of bread, it’s really delicious, and there’s a great atmosphere. I also love it. Best pizza in Takoma Park. The owners are super friendly and the service is great. Also nice patio in back.

Google
Fire pizza. Deeply admire the vigilance of the staff as well. I tried 3 flavors, this is the order in which I liked them. Pepperoni < veggie < meat I love that the sauce on the pepperoni is a bit spicy, it was very flavorful

Google
Absolutely incredible pizza! The crust was flavorful and oh so tangy, truly haven’t tasted any pizza like this. We went on a Saturday morning and had a very delicious and unique strawberry and chocolate scone, and margherita, meat, and pepperoni pizza slices. We also had the soft serve, which was great flavor wise but I felt the texture could’ve been a bit creamier. We will 100% be back because everything was delicious and reasonably priced.

Google
We got two full pies and they were both exceptional! The crust was perfectly soft, and you could tell a lot of love and effort went into making it. The soft serve ice cream was delicious as well. I can’t wait to be back to try more items from the menu. Highly recommend this place for anyone craving great pizza and a warm friendly atmosphere! I could already sense that Red Hound will make it big on the dmv pizza scene.

Yelp
This place has quickly stolen our hearts and become our go-to pizza place. The pizza is fantastic - fluffy and crispy on the bottom. We love the rotating flavors and the fact that there's always a fun vegetarian and meat option. We also have been hot on their ice cream lately - the blackberry basil one was incredible. Staff are so kind, service is super quick. Highly recommend checking this place out. Menu changes every two weeks - so make sure you pay attention to what they're offering (it's posted on their Instagram).

Yelp
This place promises, fresh and local ingredients. On that front it did deliver. The storefront is small, and I walked by it, despite knowing what I was looking for. There are a couple of tables inside, and even eating in there I got my food on takeout containers. At least these were biodegradable. The Roman style of pizza that they are working with is pre-cooked and is served without being warmed again, and you get rectangular slices. They have a vegetable special which rotate with seasonal produce, and did offer a nice variety of flavors. However, the margherita appeared to have a more whole-grain crust, and the period of flavors came through nicely with that one. A side salad was a handful of tomatoes and various garnishes. I was a bit insulted that the size of it. Overall, it is the kind of place where you are definitely paying for quality over quantity.

Yelp
As a fan of Seylou Bakery, I was excited when I read that one of their former bakers had opened a new spot in Takoma Park. Being new to DC, I hadn't heard of Takoma Park, so I used a visit to Red Hound Pizza as an opportunity to check out a new (to me) neighborhood. Both Red Hound and Takoma Park turned out to be gems! The pizza at Red Hound is always changing. They have a new menu every couple of weeks. When I went they had a fabulous beet vegetarian pizza. I guess it is one of the owner's favorites and now mine. The soft serve flavor is also always changing with the season. We went in the winter and it was eggnog - yum! The pizza and people here are delightful!

Yelp
We stopped in here for ice cream in the middle of last weekend's monsoon. Flavors are unique and the ice cream was fresh, just the right temp & texture. It's not a huge place but it's comfortable & not claustrophobic. Super friendly staff, happy to answer questions, service was exceptional! Looking forward to returning to try the pizza!

Yelp
Red Hound serves a might pizza in a tiny spot. The staff is so warm and friendly. I love that do both slices and whole pies. There are some small tables, both inside and out, so we opted to eat inside. Our pepperoni pie was delicious and perfectly crisp. I love that they use a whole grain crust, which adds to the flavor. It's now one of my favorite pizzas in the area. I'm looking forward to returning to try the sandwiches and salads as well, though not sure how I'll be able to resist ordering a pie.

Yelp
Wonderful, delicious pizza but buyers beware! This is a pizza pie shop, not a folding New York style pizza. Fresh ingredients, taste the love for the process and ask the knowledge staff about what's in season etc. 4 great visits and counting. This will probably go up in rating as I explore the menu more. Tip: Parking in the middle/courtyard

Yelp
Excellent pizzas, unique dough. Got a fresh cheese slide out of the oven. Perfect crust. Pepperoni was also great, the burnt cup style reminiscent of Prince St pizza.

Yelp
Red Hound Pizza has just opened up and you can order online, place a delivery order, or order in-person as a walk-in! We tried their Margarita and the Veggie - they also had soft serve and cookies for dessert! The pizzas were cheesy and generous with the toppings. Staff were very friendly, and the place was small and cute!

Yelp
Tried this pizza place on a whim over the weekend. Pros--friendly staff, fresh ingredients. Cons--small inside space, mainly for takeout; outdoor patio has no charm; and the main problem was the pizza was not very good. It had too much cheese, not enough sauce, and the crust was more like bread. No doubt some people like that kind of pizza, but my friend and I didn't care for it and wouldn't go back. It's also very expensive for what it is. We got a whole pizza because the slices didn't look fresh and ended up throwing away the leftovers.

Yelp
So good the pizza is incredible (and sold by the slice which is a big bonus) and the soft serve ice cream is homemade and to die for. So so yummy!!!

Yelp
This place is amazing! I'm maybe too bias to even write a review. I love their pizza and their soft serve and their desserts. The pizza is so good that I often find myself doing a little dance as I eat it. I love knowing it's made fresh with healthy ingredients and baked with love. Charbel and Andrea are so so friendly! And Thomas is a delight to see his adorable smile. I go here at least once a week, so I'm fortunate it's within walking distance for me. I could wax poetic about how eating this pizza is a love song in my mouth, but you'll just have to try it for yourself!

Mayada G.

Yelp
Delicious pizza and ice cream! Haven't had fresh and flavorful pizza like the pizza they have in so long. Definitely the drive from Arlington, VA. Also, the family that runs the store is super friendly and hospitable. A class customer service.

Yelp
I truly can't say enough good things about Red Hound. We had family in town and needed a space for about 15 adults and 5 kids to grab food + drinks. It was hard to think of a casual place in the DC area where we could host everyone, that had food / drinks that appealed to both adults and kiddos - until Red Hound came to mind! We called them and the owners were SO gracious and helpful from start to finish. They set up three tables for us on their back patio (even put flowers on them!) and made sure the salads and pizzas we pre-ordered came out right on time as everyone was arriving. The food was delicious - their pizzas are so unique in terms of toppings (which change on a regular basis) and the sourdough crust sets it apart from all the other pizza places in town. They also have cookies, cake, and soft serve so dessert was easy to tack on, too. The back patio was perfect as a semi-private space for our event, our families absolutely loved all of the pizza + dessert, and the service was so friendly. So happy that Red Hound is part of the neighborhood, and we plan to be regular customers! Thank you, Red Hound team!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious gourmet pizza. We ordered the margarita, pepperoni, meat, and veggie, but started eating before we could take proper photos of most of them. The meat and veggie pizzas rotate ingredients weekly, and this week's veggie (pictured) was onion cream, sage, roasted honey nut squash, goat cheese & chili flakes. Beautiful way to highlight the fall flavors. The owners are courteous and happy to share information about the menu. Red Hound Pizza a delightful addition to the Takoma Park culinary scene! Looking forward to dining here again.

Yelp
This place is special. The thoughtfulness behind the ingredients and flavor profiles is second to none, and the revolving menu keeps things fresh and exciting. I don't live exactly close, but can't go more than a month without going back. Red hound is always well worth the drive

Yelp
Very friendly people who serve amazing food. The pizza crust is unique and delicious and the toppings exhilarating. Don't miss the soups, especially the amazing carrot, ginger and turmeric offering. Only downside is their limited hours.

Yelp
Tasty and unique! We did half Margherita and half meat. Both were delicious! The crust is unlike any I've had before. It is hearty but light.. it's easy to keep eating and you don't get that typical bloated full feeling. We loved it!! We also sampled the soft serve ricotta with raspberry and OMG. It was amazing. If we didn't have plans we would have each ordered some right then and there. Hopefully they bring that flavor back soon (or get more machines and have several flavors - YUM!) the service was fantastic. I called in to make the order and asked for suggestions. It took 20 mins to pick up the pizza and they were so kind. It is a small space but decorated adorably. I can't wait to return.

Yelp
Very tasty flavors, fresh from farms they work with. Highly recommend checking out the veggie and the margarita and meat...any of the slices honestly were good. Also tried the dessert which was so good we had to get another one.

Yelp
Thankfully for me I live quite far. Best slices I've had in DC. Top quality with local ingredients down to the flour.

Yelp
Where can you find a delicious and reasonably priced meal in Takoma Park? Red Hound! They're very vegetarian friendly - there's always a vegetarian or vegan slice of pizza available, and the salads are great and usually vegetarian too. The inside is tiny, warm and friendly, and the owners and staff are welcoming and kind. It's a great place for kids - in warm weather there's a back outside area that's fenced in. And their soft serve is delicious with a different gourmet topping each week. A great, family owned spot for delicious food!

Josh J.

Yelp
Fantastic. Some of the best, most unique pizza i've had. Local ingredients, super friendly staff. Takoma Park at its best.

B L.

Yelp
Red Hound Pizza has become the favorite pizza place in Takoma Park for me and many of my friends who live nearby. Their pizzas are hearty and delicious with a thick, 100% whole wheat crust using flours that are grown and milled by one of their neighbors just down the street. They also use local produce when possible and therefore their veggie pizza rotates every two weeks. They also have soft serve which rotates regularly. The owners are really great. The pizza is on the expensive side ($4-5/slice) compared to other pizza so you gotta pay a premium for high-quality ingredients. They also sell pizza by the slice. You can dine-in for casual eating -- they only have a few small tables inside and some more picnic tables in a closed off parking lot in the back. Take note: their pizza is rectangular! If you can't handle that, then call it flatbread. Also they don't have gluten-free options but they do always have a vegan option (usually just their vegetarian pizza minus cheese).

Yelp
Pizza was delicious and service was very friendly. Also enjoyed chatting with the owners during the evening.I tried vegetarian and the margarita. The ambiance is relaxing and cute decor. Absolutely will be back.

L M.

Yelp
I dropped in just before closing and there were only vegan options left. I shrugged and decided to try it...this pizza may have converted me to veganism--it was AMAZING! Really flavourful, crunchy crust, and surprisingly filling. Also tried the sweet potato ice cream...wow! This should be an autumn staple. Huge thanks from a hungry out-of-towner...you made my night!

N. S.

Yelp
Not really a fan. Am always glad to see a new restaurant, or any small business, open up in the neighborhood. But this was both very high quality food that was definitely not to our liking - leaving open the door that the problem was just my husband and me, not the cuisine. We ordered a whole pizza - half pepperoni that came with sprigs of rosemary on top and half vegetarian. My taste buds felt assaulted by the rosemary on the meat pizza but the pepperoni itself was definitely good. When I read that there was "onion cream" on the vegetarian pizza I was curious as I had no idea what that was. It turns out it's what it sounds like - a big glop of cream in the middle of your pizza slice. It was so incredibly unappealing. I took one bite to convince myself that it could be good. I didn't take another. The crust is more like focaccia and definitely of very good quality. And tasty. But totally overwhelmed by the extent of toppings and how "loud" they were as additions. There was nothing subtle about this pizza experience. Anyway, a small box packs in a lot of pizza and we had a lot left over. For the first time in my life (which has been long already), I threw it away - day-old pizza always being my favorite. So this was a waste for us. But I think others might enjoy all of the complicated flavors and textures.

Yelp
I've ordered two different veggie pizzas from Red Hound now, and oh my GOSH they were both *stunningly* delicious. :) Wow. Fresh and flavorful.

Alex L.

Yelp
Another pizza place in Takoma Park? Surely that's excessive, right? Right? Wrong. What I love about pizza is it is a big tent. Red Hound's style is unique in the Carrol Ave Pizzarazzi...pizzagentsia? Whatever. Square cut, loaded with spicy pepperoni, and with one of the most unique pizza crusts I've tried. Hearty, whole wheaty, crisp-but-chewy. And the price is quite right. Check it out. Then go get yourself a $20 burrito.

Yelp
Delicious soft serve with figs! Great margherita pizza. Fabulous new spot in Takoma Park! We will be back.

MeLisa C.

Yelp
My new favorite pizza. I love the changing menu, the crust is delicious and so nice knowing sources of ingredients.

David E.

Yelp
OK, so I am thinking..."Why does Takoma Park need a 4th place selling pizza?" But heck, I am a pizza connoisseur having been born and raised in NYC. I am old, Jewish and would celebrate the return of single slice serving. This place hits a home run..a grand slam...an Aaron Judge blast into the upper deck (that's for my fellow Yankee fans). Why do I feel this way? ...great toppings, a perfectly curated lofted crust, the traditional dust flour bottom and they make it well done. As in you can hold the slice vertically and it stays together unlike other pizza venues where you would be scraping the ingredients off the floor. The chef is passionate about his creations. It comes through in the flavor. Welcome to Takoma Park!

Jim N.

Yelp
We love having this new Pizza spot in the neighborhood. The pizza is excellent and the owners are very kind and friendly.

Margaret L.

Yelp
Gosh. Ordered delivery from Red Hound, and it was.... kinda inedible. Stodgy, poor rise, odd flavors. Wish I could give a better review.

Mark M.

Yelp
The pizza is fine, but kind of greasy. The crust is only okay. And the pizza is really very small for the price. I'm all in favor of local, artisan pizza but Koma Cafe is much much better for the price.

L T.

Yelp
I found the pizza to be very good, better than I expected. When I picked up the boxes, they seemed small, I was a little disappointed, however when I opened the boxes at home, they were loaded with toppings. It was interesting how they got the flavor of the various ingredients orchestrated into an elevated taste experience. While the size was smaller than anticipated, they were quite filling and delicious. This pizza is expensive but if you are looking for an elevated flavor extravaganza, it was worth the price.

Scott H.

Yelp
Unusual and excellent. Warm, hot, or cold. What a friendly fellow that owns the place. Sat outside on a bench in the and loved every bite. Wish I was tall and young rather than short and old; then I'd have two slices rather than two. Four pizza places within 200 yards of each other, in a town this small? Ok. This one belongs.

Frankie R.

Yelp
absolute gas . some off the best ive had in a minute. amazing customer service. best pizza in tackoma park. great prices. must try
