Butter chicken Garlic naan

Red Onion Indian Lunch Brunch Dinner

Google
Came here with my family and loved everything we ordered!! Would recommend making a reservation in advance and be prepared to wait a tad when you get there as well but it’s worth it! Everything was made hot and fresh and I will be coming back for more! Highly recommend the lamb kebabs, chili chicken, and goat curry.

Google
Went here for dinner and had a fantastic experience. You can really taste the difference — the spices are sourced directly from India. The butter chicken was the best I’ve had, and the chai tea was authentic. The mango lassi is made fresh downstairs, and canned in-house. The owner even came by to explain where they source their meats and seafood. Our butter chicken originally came with bones, which we didn’t realize, but the owner quickly replaced it with a boneless version without any fuss. Excellent food and warm, thoughtful service — highly recommend!

My bestie and I stumbled upon this spot by chance and basically won the lottery. The hospitality, food, and overall experience would be hard to beat. It was a joy to be welcomed by Varun, who shared about the restaurant, food origins, and made recommendations as we ordered. When the food arrived we were blown away. We had the goat curry, butter chicken, lemon rice, and garlic naan. I also ordered a cocktail (refreshing) and we were treated to house made mango lassi (the star of the show). Cannot recommend this spot enough and looking forward to returning soon!

Google
The food was delicious, very authentic and generous portions. The Naan was fresh and hot from the oven. We ordered a chicken and lamb curry, both with rich bold flavours. The owner was very generous and gave us mango lassi for dessert. A great find and new local for us! We will be back.

Google
A very good Indian find in New York!! Me and my husband were looking for some good Indian food in Manhattan but ended up all the way at Red Onion because of their good reviews. We were happy that we found this little place. Their mango lassi was just too good. And the goat and chicken were a melt in the mouth. We had really good company and a warm welcome from the owners. There are a lot of Indian restaurants but very few are authentic. We will definitely come back!

Google
This was fantastic indian food. I asked them to pretend I wasnt a pasty prince and spice accordingly and they did not disappoint. crackling curry leaves, depth of flavor, amazing kingfish. The highlight in my opinion was the okra, which is gooey and soft yet also crunchy, the best Okra I have ever had in my life. I brought some leftovers to work the next day and my Indian coworker took a bite and said it was some of the best indian he had had in NYC, and this was a day old out of the fridge. The interior and ambience is nothing special but unless you eat furniture that shouldn’t be an issue. Took my dad here for his birthday, he used to live in Jackson Heights in the eighties and he desereves a treat. As a vegetarian he loved it, although I enjoyed the meat and fish equally.

Google
We went early and had the pleasure of meeting the owners who gave us the background to the story, especially how the spices are imported and how the chickens roll in 10 months rather than the six weeks most chickens are grown in the US. It was easily the best Indian food we’ve ever had 1000% recommended and 1,000,000% be back! Thanks Jacks dinning

Google
Curry was overly laden with fats - too rich. And cauliflower was sweet even though in schezwan sauce. Feel of authentic Indian dining was missing unfortunately

Yelp
Food was amazing! The owner welcomed us to the restaurant and talked about their commitment to sourcing fresh high quality ingredients. The portions were huge and reasonably priced.

Yelp
My friend has a new found interest in Indian food which was perfect for me since I have been craving Indian food. We wanted something authentic so of course we turned to Yelp and which eventually led us to Red Onion. The restaurant was small and quaint. Most of the tables were for 1-4 people but we did see one large table towards the back for larger parties. The menu was a lot bigger than we were expecting and we saw a lot of items that we've never heard of before. So we decided to order one familiar dish- chicken tikki masala and one new dish- chicken xacuti. Both of them were delicious. I loved the xacuti but my friends loved the tikki masala. My favorite dish of the night was the samosa chat. It was like a deconstructed samosa with chickpeas and potatoes. The two entrees were quite spicy so remember to take that into consideration. We also in ordered the onion nan and garlic nan. The onion nan was more soft and pillowy whilst the garlic nana was more crispy and fragrant. Can't go wrong with either. I'm already making arrangements to come again!

Yelp
Incredible new restaurant! The food, drinks, and service were all incredible. THE FOOD WAS INCREDIBLE! Very happy this family-owned business opened up near us - immediately our new go-to Indian spot! 10/10

Yelp
Reasonably priced for the area! Red Onion says they make everything inhouse and the family has been in the hospitality industry for a long time back in India. I'm not authenticity connoisseur, but Red Onion's quality is certainly up there. The owner stopped by to check in on us when we dined in. It's rather akin to a startup fancy restaurant. The decor is almost there and the galaxy lights are pretty cool. I don't quite get the thematic connection though, but what's that matter in the face of yummy food?

Yelp
MY FAVORITE INDIAN RESTAURANT IN NYC SO FAR!!! I loved this place the ambiance is very relaxing and chill. Perfect for a date or family dinner. The service was great and I was very happy with it. The food was the best!!! The chicken is the most tender and juiciest I have had in NYC IN SO LONG! It was one of those places where every single bite was heaven and I would not change or add anything! The salt level was perfect (not too much and not too little) and nothing was dripping in oil. All so fresh and yummy! Thank you so much for this lovely experience. I can not wait to come back and try different things!!

Andres R.

Yelp
Owner was so friendly and walked us through his family's background and passion for hospitality. That butter chicken was delicious! Mango lassi was also great, I had to order two of them. The ambiance was dark and intimate for dinner, but they played upbeat music which was a nice balance. I'll be back.

Yelp
Had a large birthday party, and was impresses not oonly by how they treated us, but to the other patrons as well. No matter the ambiance or quality of food (which were both great), customer care is the deciding factor for me for any restaurant. Thank you Varon, Ahskit & Salene (forgive me, I'm certain I misspelled your names). My guests were very satisfied.

Yelp
We ordered delivery from Red Onion and it was supposed to take 30-40 minutes to arrive. Our delivery person called us from the restaurant to say the order was delayed for an additional half hour. In all, we waited for two hours and the food never arrived. We tried calling the restaurant, but the voicemail message said no one was available. This is outrageous behavior. If you cannot manage delivery on a Saturday night, then don't offer it. We had to go through Grubhub to cancel the order and had to deal with an idiotic AI assistant to finally get this resolved. We live locally and we will tell all our friends not to go to Red Onion.

Yelp
"The Middle of the Average" Saw some good reviews of this newish Indian restaurant in my hood. So fired up the app and got me some delivery. Well people, nothing to see here. What's to cheer - Reasonably priced - good selection - Unique mushroom achari. Recommend! What's to jeer - Food is a little bland - Very uninspired in terms of vegetables and other things included in the curries - Nothing special and could get at any Indian restaurant - Boring !

Yelp
Great food, cool ambience and great service!! Highly recommend!! Perfectly spiced!! Quality meats

Yelp
After a quick debate on what we all wanted for dinner, we decided to try this place. Our kids were both craving butter chicken and stumbled upon this place when scrolling on Yelp. We looked through the photos, read some reviews, and decided to give it a try. I will start by stating that although the wait to eat was long, when we finally received our food, all was delicious. We had a bit of a wait for a table to open, and so to make up for it, the restaurant owner brought over 4 complimentary samosas (one each). Let me tell you, they were hands down, the best samosas we've ever had anywhere! The dough was soft, light perfectly fried, and the filling was moist, flavorful, and savory. The owner told us that their samosas are made fresh daily and explained that the concept to their restaurant, is providing customers with optimal freshness, all made to order dishes to assure quality and so nothing goes to waste. 100% sourced ingredients from India; including their meats, organic chicken, seafood, fish, and spices. The butter chicken sauce was much darker than we've had anywhere. Although good, it tasted different than other butter chicken dishes we've had in other restaurants. I don't think their butter chicken recipe uses any cream, which will then explain the dark rich hue to their sauce that made us wonder if it had to do with the region of their dishes or, if it's their own spin on the dish. I had their house specialty curry in a coconut base and loved it. The chicken was very tender, moist, and flavorful. Bryce had the tandoori chicken. One of the chicken pieces was cooked perfectly, but the other thinner piece was overcooked and dry, especially because the dish does not include a sauce. He used the sauces that came with the samosas, which helped. To drink, we had mango lassies. They were really good. My only critique is that they needed to be colder. Overall, we enjoyed our meal and look forward to going back to try other dishes on their menu.

Yelp
Red Onion is my new East village neighborhood favorite! We came in on a Sunday & the vibe was so chill, music was very cool. Vrun was such an excellent host he making sure all food is hot, fresh & delicious

Yelp
Went with hubby on a Monday night to have Indian food cause I was craving Indian curry. Started off with samosa for appetizers they're bite sizes, I'm use to having a more filling larger sizes. I got the chicken tikka marasala, chicken was nice and juicy. Hubby got the chennai lamb curry, very strong lamb flavor. For dessert I got the carrot rice pudding. Flavors of the food was good, service was good and competitive pricing.

Yelp
Everything was just perfect from hospitality, ambiance to food and overall experience. The food is specifically inspired from Rajasthan and ingredients originating there. The flavor profile reminisced me of growing up in India with home cooked food! Def worth experiencing this new gem in the neighborhood!

Yelp
This newish neighborhood restaurant deserves to be discovered. The food is excellent and the service very friendly. Not your basic Indian restaurant. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Margaret L.

Yelp
The food service and ambiance was great. Very personable server, we truly felt like their guest. The food is amazing, very authentic.
google avatar

Mona S.

Yelp
Ordered in. Quick delivery, the food tasted fresh and delicious. The dishes come with rice, which took the wandering out of whether or not the rice would be included. The only reason it didn't get five stars is because I thought the amount of chicken in my chicken tikka masala was kind of small For a $20 price tag. They did package everything well though.
google avatar

Nivi R.

Yelp
Incredibly good delivery spot - it hit all the right notes. Ordered in the methi malai paneer sandwich curry and garlic naan for a solo dinner. Incredibly tasty and generous portions. Made for 2+ meals for 1 person. Cant wait to try other things from here!

Yelp
First off! Amazing food, flavorful, presentation was great! The staff were courteous, and served us well without being too overbearing unlike other restaurants out there. They let us enjoy our meal and take our time! We came in for my gf's birthday and they were kind enough to keep the cake ahead of time! Now, the ambience is ok. I don't need authentic interior decor or traditional Indian music but they ought to brighten up the place a little bit. It's too dark in there! But the food is good so I'm okay finding my way in the dark! Will come back again!
google avatar

Laurence M.

Yelp
Delicious food, very clean and fresh flavors. Their chicken and spices all imported from India! Spicy currys, crunchy bhel puri, fresh nan, it's all here. I would definitely return.

Aimee W.

Yelp
Love this place! The butter chicken is incredible and the naan and sauce. They import all of the spices direct from India. Such amazing food and great for takeout
google avatar

Helen W.

Yelp
Amazing food! I grew up in India and this was as good as anything we had there. The tandoori chicken is especially good - moist and flavorful! But really everything was first rate! We had a family gathering of 12 and the staff could not have been more welcoming and accommodating. If I could give them more than 5 stars I would!
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the best Indian food I've had in NY. Highly recommend the Spinach Chaat, Gobi Tak-A-Tak, Butter Chicken. Space is small but acoustics are good. Servers/owners are very friendly and attentive.

Reuven O.

Yelp
Cozy ambiance with good food , extensive menu with vegetarian and vegan options . Would recommend

Yelp
This place is incredible! The food was so delicious and the ambience was so much fun and beautiful! The service was perfect this is a totally authentic place to go too! I want to go back again and again!

Yelp
I've walked past this place a number of times and finally decided to give it a try. Wow!! Everything about the Red Onion was wonderful, from the projections on the ceiling, to the attentive staff and without a doubt, the amazing food!! One of the owners even came out and gave us a brief and interesting history of their family as chefs for royalty and about where they source their quality ingredients from. A great experience.

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about this place! Super friendly, great food and drinks! Spent a Sunday Funday here and had a great time! Thank you Ankit!

Djette K.

Yelp
literally the best Indian food I have ever had. super high quality and delicious!!! The ambiance is vibes- definitely a great place to chill, grab great bites and hang with mates over beers. Definitely a legendary local spot that competes internationally for its level of cuisine. I believe all of the meats are sourced from organic, ethical farms- Hindu styles. Love that.

Jessy P.

Yelp
I had a wonderful dinner tonight at red onion!! the owner was wonderful and the food was high quality. I appreciated the relaxing ambiance and great service.

Yelp
Omg! The food here was amazing! It is so hard to find authentic butter chicken and Indian food in general in NYC! But I definitely found it here at Red Onion!! I ordered the Pandara Road Wala Butter Chicken (HOUSE SPECIALTY) with garlic Naan and a Mule cocktail. The butter chicken was AMAZING! It had just the right amount of spices and flavor. It tasted very fresh and was made to order. The butter chicken sauce on the chicken was so good that I ended up eating it all with the Naan before I even finished the chicken! I had to ask for more sauce for the chicken because it was just that good! The chicken that they used in the butter chicken dish was on the bone dark meat and was cooked to perfection. It wasn't dry at all and was very tender! It was also a VERY generous portion of butter chicken that I received. I even have leftovers for tomorrow. The Mule cocktail and garlic naan was great too. The garlic naan was garlicky and seasoned just right. The service was pretty good too as the owner came over and introduced himself and gave an interesting backstory to the restaurant. I felt like I was there eating with family because he was very welcoming as well as the rest of the staff! The ambience was nice as well, it gave me date night vibes as there were stars moving around on the ceiling and it was very dim inside. I loved it. I am definitely coming back here to try everything else on the menu! If you want authentic tasting Indian food, then you need to run here asap, don't walk lol. You will not regret it and your stomach and taste buds will thank you!

Paul G.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh Indian food. Excellent service from this small, family run business. Garlic Naan was so light and delicious. My son loved his Chicken curry dish (I forget the name) and my Tandoori mixed grill was excellent and easily enough for two meals! We will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
Walked in on a Friday night with no reservation for two people, and promptly seated. Place is fairly small and a bit dark especially since the staff was keeping the lighting very low. With only a couple of tables seated, we ordered chicken tikka masala, and chicken makhni, which come with rice, and we also got a garlic naan. Everything was nicely prepared, and the chicken was correctly cooked in a tandoor before being added to the sauce. For $18 each. The entrées were tasty and the bread fluffy garlicky. You can pre-buy $50 voucher through Yelp for $25 which is a pretty good deal. Service was a bit spotty at times, but we weren't in a hurry and otherwise no major issues. They even gave us a complementary kheer rice pudding to make up for the wait. Will be back to try more dishes like biryani.
google avatar

Dana E.

Yelp
Food was good no complaints about that. BUT LITERALLY waited forever for our food to arrive. Also super sketchy that when we asked for the check the waiter tried to lie and said tip was not included. I had to check the group check to see it was most deff included. She was even asked directly if it was included and said no "we don't get any of that". Management needs to give them that tip and like I donno what underground type thing is occurring or if I should be afraid to write to this review... not cool.

Elaine D.

Yelp
This is a great spot for a delicious meal! I have tried all of the typical East Village Indian spots, but the food here really brings a touch of something different and is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. My father, a former chef, is very difficult to please and even he had only positive things to say about our meal. The butter chicken was definitely worth the hype and, unlike so many other locations, is well seasoned and not dry. We did not order spicy items, so I can't speak to the heat level of other dishes (I'm a personal fan of spicy food), but we will definitely be back to try more of the menu.

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
I went for lunch with my friend at Red Onion. It was a very pleasant and delicious experience. Varun, the owner, was a fount of information, and gave us a few items "on the house." We ordered Tandoori Chicken and Lamb Chops, both of which were scrumptious--especially the meaty chops. The lunch also came with a Masala sauce, salad, the best Garlic Naan I've ever tasted, and a delicious samosa. The piece de resistance was the dessert--Kulfi, the best I've ever tasted, with a special sauce.

Yelp
Really, one of the best Indian restaurants in the neighborhood. Everything I have tried has been fresh and well made. Just as important, the cooking has been consistent. Too often I will get a takeout which is good, then try a few weeks later and it's not. Spicing is a bit on the mild side but fine for my tastes. Place is small and I have only gotten takeout, but owners seem nice and would make a good casual dinner.
google avatar

Ty H.

Yelp
The food is very fresher and sourced from Rajastan... according to the waiter. Although the waiter was friendly and talkative, getting service is a wait... the grilled vegetables and chicken dish was excellent. The daal was okay. The okra was quite good. Overall a nice experience. A bit pricey. They push the coconut rice... it was okay. Three stars for the service. 4 for food. Next time I will ask for super spicy!!

Yelp
Had great delicious food at red onion. Very fresh authentic Indian food. I would highly recommend Red Onion! Service and Ambiance is excellent.

Yelp
Delicious Indian food. Brunch menu on Saturday is amazing. Quality of food and service is great. Highly recommend

Linggg G.

Yelp
The food is good. Please turn the light brighter for indoor dining. The light bring the mood down. Also, the window glass for outside is too dark that's why it's less businesses. Nobody can see inside. I think maybe it's a Indian traditional design, but we are in New York.

Olivia R.

Yelp
I have never had a bad meal here, the food is always fresh and prepared quickly! I highly recommend whether you're dining in or carrying out.

Yelp
Just looked this restaurant on my Maps app by chance & decided to give it a go. I'm glad I did, their food is delicious & the service is outstanding. Wish them nothing but success moving forward!

Yelp
Delicious Indian food. Some of the best our group has recently enjoyed in trips to London or Washington DC. Hospitality was genuine and the owner was excited to share his family's restaurant history. Lamb dishes were some of our favorites. Highly recommend.

Esh G.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by this small joint which has yummy grub. Authentic 'ghee' tadka taste in the Dal reminded me of India. The owner is super friendly and was kind enough to chat with every customer giving the food details.

Vincent O.

Yelp
This is genuinly a really high quality restaurant. The food is very flavorful and portion sizes are good. Naan was fresh too and the ghee had great flavor. The prices are $2-3 cheaper than most Indian places around here. It's a cut above for sure. Service was a little slow but the food made it well worth it. And the staff are really nice and hospitable. It's a cute place, small but cozy. I would highly recommend!! I hope it stays in business.

Autra N.

Yelp
The best new Indian restaurant in East Village! It's a lovely atmosphere with galaxy and star projections on the ceiling. Highly recommend the Tandoori salmon and Goan shrimp! A vegetarian and pescatarian's DREAM

Neva S.

Yelp
We ordered dinner from Red Onion last night. We ordered online and didn't get any response so I called the restaurant. I quickly placed our order and was assured that the online order would not be processed. The food arrived quickly. This restaurant is amazing! The herbs and spices are fresh. The seasoning is perfect. There isn't a pool of oil or tons of salt. 10/10. Can't wait to eat in the restaurant.

Diane Raines W.

Yelp
We had a family dinner in this lower East Side Restarant on the weekend and it was really a pleasure. It's good Indian food, fresh, made with absolutely fresh ingredients, with many dishes that are not easy to find in the United States. The Murgh Malai Kabob, a personal favorite in Delhi is not made well over here. The dish was terrific on Saturday with great breads. Everyone (there were a dozen of us) and we all liked our food enormously, not to mention the warmth of the service. Varun, the Rajasthani manager took such good care of us personally with great warmth. This is a very nice place and if we lived nearer, we would be regulars. But we'll be back. With many thanks for the rich and tender chicken, the lamb, the samosas, the vegetables, the lassis. It was really a wonderful afternoon.

Yelp
Really, really good. We came for lunch and the lunch deal is fantastic. Filling and super tasty. The tikka sauce has a creamy floral taste with a chasing heat. The tea is tasty. Great service. Honestly not a bad thing to say.
