Alamo Drafthouse Closes For Now Because of Coronavirus Outbreak - Eater Austin

Yelp
Out in the road and decided to stop in for a flick. While i'm still searching for a drive in theater; I'm glad that cinemas are still and thing. The crew is great, Angie helped with a slight membership issue and I was able to catch an early matinee. Whenever I return to Austin, I know where I can swing in and enjoy more new releases.

Yelp
Decent seats, has Bollywood movie showtimes too and is located in a central location. Best part - popcorn!!!! Overall, Nice theater

Ralph S.

Yelp
Tuesday is discount day if you have a Regal membership card. Today, I'm watching A Haunting in Venice. Ticket price was $5.95 plus tax. I thoroughly enjoy enjoy these "who dunnit" movies. The theater itself is rather clean. However, I'm here for the first showing and there's hardly anyone in attendance which is fine with me because I enjoy getting completely engrossed in these types of movies and dislike any distractions.

Wendy K.

Yelp
Very comfortable seating. Wish they reclined though. Technical difficulties and long line but got in. Yeah me.

Laure H.

Yelp
This movie theatre desperately needs a remodel. I entered the viewing room and was instantly hit with a musky moldy smell. It's really super strong. The seats don't decline so are your typical sit up straight type. Don't come for a 2+ hour movie. The ticket prices are probably the cheapest around so I guess that's what you are paying for. I really think if you are just going to the movies every so often you are better off paying more somewhere else for a better quality and comfort.

Yelp
I came for an advanced screening of Joy Ride. (This is not a review of Joy Ride). I felt that the theater outside where you get food is nice and large but inside the room is small and I barely had room to stretch my legs. It's also really dirty. The audio of the movie was good and I like the hand dryers in the restrooms. This theater can be cleaner overall.

Ellie C.

Yelp
I went to this movie theater for an advance screening last night. It was my first visit and tbh the overall experience was not as bad as the reviews I've been seeing on Yelp & Google. The theater has a huge parking lot right in front of it and upon entering, there were two staffs at the entrance that guided us to the event that we were attending. We were at theater 4 and the space was not bad. It was cleaner than I expected and there was no weird odors inside. The advance screening for Joy Ride was amazing and the hostess did a great job as well! I highly recommended everyone to snag a ticket for their premiere on July 7 2023!

Yelp
This is my favorite theater! I always come to see 4DX films, they have special effects like smoke, water, snow, wind, chair movement. It's like a theme park experience, kind of reminds me of the old A Bugs Life theater experience at Disneyland. I also love regal I always use the app for tickets and concessions as I get points and free options

Kristin S.

Yelp
Decent enough for an older theater, and it wasn't very full when I went, which was nice. No recliner seats, and when I sat in it I seriously thought the seat was wet, but it wasn't. It had a damp feeling to it when sitting in them. Lots of parking available which was nice.

Scott T.

Yelp
It's antiquated for sure. Menus work half of the time on the screens when you're trying to order. No clue on pricing or what's available. Way better options around town with a significantly more pleasurable viewing experience. No in seat ordering as well. Hard Pass.

Edwyn A.

Yelp
This is your classic multiplex theater. Nothing fancy. I've been going to this place since the 2000s and it's still mostly the same. Sodas will cost about $7 and add popcorn or candy and you will be shelling out a couple of Andrew Jacksons. Seats are the same basic chairs but they work unless your planning on watching a 3 hour movie. They also have a 4-d imax. It's not the biggest imax just the normal one you'd find in any suburban multiplex in America. It looks like now have a subscription plan as well.

Ellie N.

Yelp
It's my first time here. The entire theater is very smelly. The chairs and armrests are sticky. I'm in theater 4, not sure if other theaters are better. It's the worst theater I have been to.

Rozele L.

Yelp
Had a great time the seats were super cushioney, very clean and the staff were very friendly. Yep I like friendly the movie was good, there's a great messeage to be learned at the end. I'll go back to enjoy another movie again.

Jessica M.

Yelp
We watched Avatar in 4DX and WOW what an adventure. I don't think there is any other way to see the new Avatar movie except in 4D. From the vibrating seats, to the wind, the fog, and the water droplets, we felt like we were in the movie! Bring a jacket, you will get cold. The 4DX gets a 5 star. I can't rate the rest of the theater since I've never seen a movie at this theater. I'm not sure about the regular theater seating, etc. We also didn't have any popcorn, snacks, or drinks. Maybe one day we'll visit again for a regular movie experience.

Autumn M.

Yelp
I went here to see the 25th anniversary of Titanic in 3D. I wasn't too impressed with the 3D aspect, but I guess the use of glasses is pretty old school at this point. Unfortunately the person that scanned my ticket at the door neglected to give me the glasses, but thankfully I remembered before the movie started that I was missing them. The theater itself and the experience was nothing special. They have the overpriced concessions that you've come to expect. But for $6.29 for a hot dog, I'd suggest going to an Alamo and paying a few dollars more for an actual meal.

Lori S.

Yelp
I love movies. The movie pass at Regal is a bargain! Imagine all the movies you can consume for one low monthly price. Well this is the place. I was sad to see the arboretum location close, as it was my first choice for the eclectic art house movies that fill my soul. Imagine my surprise when I headed over to this location and not only found that the picked up the art house movies that were played at their sister location, AND they took team members too. So glad to see Brenda, my favorite ticket taker is still with Regal! She will great you with a smile, welcome you back and is just so kind. Great job Regal StoneLake! Now, if you could just start taking Apple Pay!!!

Paul R.

Yelp
I was lucky enough to score a ticket for the sneak preview of Wakanda Forever. The event was well organized as I quickly received my armband and found a seat right next to one of my Fav Elites. The movie checked all the boxes; an excellent story, action-packed, and a surprise ending. The theatre has a great surround-sound system and there are some movies that you have to see on the big screen and this is one of them. As a bonus, I enjoyed a nice cold beer whilst enjoying the movie. Thanks for the invite for this 5-star mid-week event!

Corey F.

Yelp
This theater is in massive need of an upgrade. We went to see Oppenheimer in the IMAX theater and it's the first time in over 15 years I sat in a theater that didn't have stadium seating. The rows were cramped and there was no way to extend my legs. People were literally falling over each other making bathroom trips and runs to the concession stand during the movie and I felt like I was flying in coach. Great sound and great picture quality but it's hard to enjoy a movie when your knees are aching and your feet are repeatedly stepped on.

Sarah R.

Yelp
This movie theater sucks so bad. The employees seem to have no idea about any of the products they are selling or what they have in stock. Also, the food is lack-luster and over-priced. I spent $30 on a hot dog, nachos, and a beer that was not even cold. Also, they had to get three employees and a manager up front just to ring up a single beer, because they didn't know how. In addition, the seats are uncomfortable and not at all upgraded like other theaters. I won't be coming back.

Eric B.

Yelp
I came here for a Sneak Preview of Wakonda Forever. Marvell continues to astound us by remembering that a good story is needed before any special effects. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll keep it brief and generic: a good job was done addressing the death of the prior king and the plot that follows was great for someone who hasn't read the comics. The theatre venue was nice and actually pretty cool for trying to look like the Alamo. I love the smell of popcorn in a theatre. Seats seem a little dated, but I was comfy. 4 stars.

Madelyn K.

Yelp
Me and my boyfriend got tickets to see the sound of freedom movie. We come to this theater only to realize I purchased the tickets at the wrong location, the lady checking tickets kindly told us to go to the desk they will just switch them for this location. The manager walks up to us asks what we want obviously we were not important to her and her attitude proved it. I didn't grab my receipt immediately from her because I was putting my card away and she slammed it on the counter and scoffed and walked away! As we were watching the movie the side lights were on the whole time! Horrible experience here. Never again.

Sten D.

Yelp
Went to a movie last night at Regal Gateway, and the experience was horrid. It wasn't the movie itself, or the facilities, or the staff. It was the 15-20 ministers of commercials after the published starting time, before the 10-15 minutes of previews, meaning that the movie started half an hour late. The previews are traditional, but if there are going to be outside commercials, they should run before the starting time. Ironically, there was a piece touting how much better the theater experience was to watching at home. Sorry, but feeding us a diet of commercials reduces the theater experience to television.

Todd H.

Yelp
Just went to an early screening of Wakanda Forever at Regal Gateway. Clean theater with good snacks! The sound system was awesome too Check em out!

Jeremy M.

Yelp
This is Texas!!! It's summer!!! Neither theater 3 nor 5 have air conditioning!!! What The Fuck?!?!?!?!

B L.

Yelp
Just wanted to provide another update, the business has not responded to our outreach and provided no compensation.

Eric V.

Yelp
I am a member of regal unlimited, and I have been a customer for more than 15 years of this movie theater. Unfortunately, the customer service at this location is becoming the worst. The manager Jeffrey Joyce is a bit of a schmuck. I have one of the regulator cups that allows you to buy a drink for a dollar, and I usually use it to get my drink, but this schmuck is refusing. He makes me waste my time with his petulance. Generally, as regulars that come to the movie theater, we try to avoid him because he's always dirty and has a bad appearance, dir in his nails, and it stinks, mainly because he stinks! I'd rather lose my money on the membership that I already paid for unlimited than come back to waste my time with this schmuck.

Sandra C.

Yelp
I attended a pre-screening of Wakanda Forever last night. The move was great however my neck is sore. Hopefully, the movie outings start to get back and they have the ability to update the seats. I'm on the short side so my head was in an awkward position sitting up in the chair since the headrest sits above my head. The place was clean, lobby was clean and the staff behind the counter was friendly. Would I ever come back with the current seats? Probably not.

Tina H.

Yelp
I think some reviews are really outdated. I have been here twice, both times this place is clean, staffs are friendly and welcoming. And the manager ( we met today) is helpful. We didn't have problems, just needed the manager's help with my phone app. Plus, restrooms are clean. My husband added the men's room is spotless.

John C.

Yelp
All of the ICEE machines are broken every single time we go. You would think the manager would order the appropriate service technician to come down and fix it after 6 months of it always being broken. Maybe you should just go to AMC.

Hannah H.

Yelp
The theater is dated for sure and it took about 25 minutes to get anything at the concessions. The IMAX was great though.

Shannon G.

Yelp
This theater, which is in my old neighborhood and is a little drive from my new location in North Austin. But I really wanted to treat myself to this 4D 3D, and what better movie, then the Jurassic movie! My word. What an amazing experience. I don't want to give away the movie, but let's say, if you're riding in a car on a bumpy road, your seat will bounce to fit the scene in the movie. If it's windy, fans blow at your face. And if there is mud kicking up, you feel air blow on your ankles. Hope I didn't ruin the movie for you. Let's just say, it's very interactive, and a super experience. A little negative point. There were a few water scenes and I think there was some missed points. The water feature wasn't working. Should have been misted by water a few times, but it didn't happen. I think there could have been a missed moment or two when there was a wooded area. Could have had the smell of trees or something. But other than those two things. Great experience. Tickets are more than a standard movie, but the effects are cool. I wouldn't do it for every movie, but once in a while would be a nice treat. I would love to do this again. Look forward to another action movie

Alexis B.

Yelp
I would definitely think twice before going to see a movie at this theater. My husband went to see Oppenheimer in imax yesterday arrived during daylight and parked under a streetlight in their parking lot. Came out to discover the streetlight was non functional and the back passenger window of his truck was smashed in. The whole truck had been rummaged through. Two other vehicles were also hit. Management said this has become a commonplace occurrence at their theater and despite knowing it's a trend they've done nothing to increase security or raise awareness amongst patrons.

Marie L.

Yelp
I went here for the first time after my son raved about it. He's seen three movies: Creed III, John Wick and tonight we saw Super Mario Brothers. Now I know what you are thinking... why Super Mario Brothers. Honestly my son (19 yrs old) was so excited to take me here that we found a movie to go see, just so he could take me to this theater. To give you some perspective, I like elevated cinema experiences. So we go to AMC Dolby as a baseline and Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter is my absolute fav. This, however, was not my cup of tea. Tons of parking and when you enter it's a typical menu. It's got some old school soda fountains with six basic flavors (Pepsi not Coke) and popcorn. Some interesting items like dipping dots, Nathan's hotdogs and Doritos nachos. I got some Butterfinger minis in a box and they tasted stale but the popcorn was fresh. However don't get too excited yet. If you know about this theater, the seats move to the action in the movie. So if a boat is on the water...the seats moves like waves or if it's raining, water drips from the ceiling, if a punch flies your seat jerks and a gust of wind sprays you in your ear and your face and if a car tumbles across a highway the seats will damn near throw you and your popcorn across your neighbors. While it sounds cool, think about these slow and sporadic radical movements for TWO HOURS. If you get sea sick this is not for you. Any motion sickness issues, don't do it. Now I do not have motion sickness and come the last fifteen minutes I was tempted to go sit on the side stairs. You can barely eat and definitely be careful trying to take a drink for fear of launching it. The kids around me seemed to love it and my son does too but I won't be back. My boogie ass will take a glass of wine and dessert an hour into the film while I recline and tap my card to pay. If you love a two-hour theme park ride... this place is for you.

Amanda S.

Yelp
Come on Regal! UPGRADE this theatre... at least just a bit. Some new seats is really all I want. The seats here fold up automatically when you aren't sitting in it. My kid though couldn't even sit in the seat we paid for because the seat kept folding on her. ANNOYING! I guess I forgot I'd been to this theater before. I'll skip this location going forward.

Heather S.

Yelp
I absolutely HATE giving bad reviews as I'm in the industry that's review driven... BUT we came to see Thor in 4DX and Screen 1 had NO A/C!!!!!! Incredibly HOT. We come from an older house that has no central AC, so we rely on window units, and using the movies (which is normally cold in nature/reputation) as getaway from the Texas heat (it's 105 today not including the heat index) was hotter than our house! It was so hot, my husband started to get sick and we head to leave early and not be able to enjoy the $50 plus popcorn/drink etc we happily PAID for... Worse experience ever and I can't ask my husband to come back again or we risk him getting sick again... We should get a refund or a rain check or SOMETHING! Call this theatre BEFORE buying tickets so you don't risk going thru this as well!

Carrie A.

Yelp
Just fyi; 20 min of ads and many on repeat is how our movie started. Did not enjoy........

Courtney B.

Yelp
Today I came to watch an early screening of Spies in Disguise courtesy of Yelp! It sure is neat to be Elite! The movie is family friendly and is about a top rated spy who gets inadvertently turned into a pigeon. It's filled with action and funny moments. This is a must see film if you have kiddos or even if you don't. 5 stars! This 2 star rating is for the movie theater and not for the movie. The chairs here are uncomfortable and dirty. Additionally, the movie theater itself is musty. During the movie, my allergies were triggered as the dust mites and allergens in the theater were quite strong. Last, the theater chairs are small and squeak with the smallest of movements. I'm not sure I would revisit this theater if given the opportunity.

Yelp
Taking two entire stars away because Dierdre (I think is the spelling of her name) was sooooooo rude. Here's a little snip of our convo: My boyfriend and I were going to see Topgun having a fun date day and ending it with a movie. We get got the theater, just had dinner so we were full but thought we'd grab some drinks and bam Texas theaters serve beer, how cool. We get to the counter and order - Me: 'I'll take a Michelob Ultra' Asher(theater worker): looks at me and walks away to get Dierdre *Dierdre walks up* Dierdre: ID My boyfriend: 'I'll take a Michelob as well' Dierdre: ID My boyfriend: 'Yes ma'am, geez aggressive. Can I get 2?' Dierdre: 'NO IM TIRED SO TIRED OF PEOPLE ASKING NE THAT THEY ASK ME THAT HUNDREDS OF TIMES A DAY' Me: 'You don't need to be rude and if that's a policy you should put a sign up so less people ask' Dierdre: *Walks away* She needs to learn some manners. We were being very kind and she was rude from the moment she walked up. Otherwise, the theater is nice and clean, the movie was fun (saw it in 4D), we'll be back but hopeful Dierdre is nicer next time. I feel bad for anyone that has to encounter her.

Beverly S.

Yelp
Been to the theater many times and it's cool. The thing I really dig is the concessions, so many of the other theaters have the same things but Regal has a bit of a twist; instead of the dry, almost stale nacho chips you can switch it up and get Doritos or another type. The wait is not ridiculous like it is at Tinseltown. The seats aren't as comfy as some of the other theaters I've been to but that may be a plus..def decreases the chance of falling asleep.

Jeffery H.

Yelp
Yelp sucks. But regal is great. It's what you expect when dealing with people and sitting in an theater.

Geoff B.

Yelp
Came to see Sound of Freedom. Sound was at half volume. Who wants to squeeze past crammed-in patrons in the old style seating system in order to hopefully track down an employee with a walkie talkie to call up to the projection booth when most of the time, the call actually gets ignored?

D.k. P.

Yelp
I went to see Top Gun - Maverick in 4DX paid the 21 bux expecting to experience TOTAL 4DX as advertised. Well, First of all.. The movie started and the interior lights where left on for almost 20 minutes. 4DX Is supposed to have the capabilities of water, Snow, smells, air, strobe lights, fog and of course movement of the seats. All that worked was the movement of the seats, strobes and air blasts.. I feel I was ripped off because the regal Gateway didn't live up to their advertised movie experience. The seat movement and air blasts where cool but I was expecting more for the cost of my ticket. Unless they fix their 4DX I don't believe I will be going back or spending my money on something that just don't completely work right

Abel C.

Yelp
Accidentally bought all adult tickets When I only needed 2 and 3 kids Manager said there was toning he could do since I had purchased them online When he can more than certainly do something about the situation He was no help Would just recommend going to a AMC

Kelly C.

Yelp
I have been to a few regal, they are always clean and have plenty of parking space, the only reason that I don't gave 5 star is the staff that check the tickets is not friendly, just feel like they hate their jobs and they don't care!

Crystal L.

Yelp
My go to decent theater when I can't get showtimes needed at my Alamo Drafthouse. Nothing exceeds but nothing meh either. The employees there have always been good to me. The concessions lines can get LONG during peak showtimes so be warned if you're trying to make your way to a show with a drink and food. Note that Regal now serves ALCOHOL! Yay! But they're very particular and strict and require you to only get 1 drink at a time and there seems to only be ONE person that can service you when doing so. Moviepass got me to keep going and Regal points help keep you rewarded with returning visits. Hopefully, someday, they'll upgrade their seats to the reclining kind! It would make this Regal then 5 stars!

Jeanne U.

Yelp
I normally take my family to Alamo Drafthouse, but wanted to see Sound of Freedom. The theater could use some updating, but they seem to be willing to screen great films that don't get picked up by other theaters. While I would love for them to upgrade their seats, I appreciate them screening important works like Sound of Freedom.

Becca R.

Yelp
Got the Regal Pass but all three movies I've seen at this theater had very low audio. Almost sounds like they turned the bass down. I talked to an employee after the movie about this issue and they said to let the staff know when I have the issue next time. Meaning, I need to interrupt my movie experience to tell them to soundcheck, which should be a standard procedure for them before screenings. In addition to low audio, the rows are so tight that you have to scuttle across seats. It's sad that this is the only Regal theater north of the river.

Raudel V.

Yelp
Not too crazy about their IMAX prices. Paid $20 a ticket only to find out their IMAX screen is quite small. I've been to other non-IMAX screens that are bigger (and paid nowhere near $20). Thank god the film played with no issues. Seats weren't too comfortable either. Probably won't visit too often.

Matthew M.

Yelp
I just went to see Black Adam in theatre 4. Color was off and a bluish cast was on the projected film. I complained and requested the projectionist check the color. Nothing was done.

Paige Blache ..

Yelp
I wish I could give a big fat ZERO. I came here last week to see Oppenheimer on IMAX. the movie was amazing, but our experience at this theater was not. It was my first movie since the pandemic and I am not sure when I will go to another theater again. The movie was scheduled for 11:20am. When the screen came on, we got shocked by absolutely deafening sound for nearly 20 minutes of stupid commercials. I went out to find someone thinking something was wrong. You could hear the sound all the way into the lobby. The kids working there were clueless. An older gentleman told me he had the same experience in another movie. I had my fingers in my ears. Then there were another 15-20 minutes of previews, still insanely LOUD. WHY?!?!?! Oppenheimer started at noon and was loud, but not as loud as the commercials and previews. We saw a man remove his hearing aid! I will skip this theater going forward and think about whether I visit another as a new person to Austin.
