Best Restaurant Dishes Eater NY Editors Ate This Week, September 15, 2025 | Eater NY

"I stopped by the Upper East Side outpost of this downtown Italian sandwich shop that got popular some years ago for the Uncle Jimmy ($18), a hulking mix of prosciutto, mozzarella, soppressata, arugula, and the house pepper spread on stirato. The meats, cheese, and chiles play well together, and the hearty bread gives the whole thing a great bite, though mine didn’t lend much structural stability; it’s a delicious, messy affair prone to oily drips." - Nick Mancall-Bitel

NYC’s New Restaurant Openings - New York - The Infatuation

"Regina’s Grocery, the Orchard Street sandwich shop, has a fourth location on the UES. Their well-stuffed Italian deli sandwiches are all named after the owner’s family members, so now, instead of saying “Let’s eat, Grandma,” Upper East Siders can say “Let’s eat Grandma.” " - Will Hartman, Willa Moore

Regina’s Grocery Is Opening on the Upper East Side | Eater NY

"A hip Italian sandwich shop that first opened on Orchard Street, it’s expanding to the Upper East Side with a new location in the works at 300 E. 88th Street, between First and Second avenues. Named after owner Roman Grandinetti’s mother, Regina, the shop gained a downtown following when it opened in 2017; Grandinetti later added a second local location and debuted his first Brooklyn outpost this year, and he’s eyeing an October launch for the new site." - Emma Orlow

Where to Eat on the Upper East Side: Hoexters, Al Badawi

"A sandwich-counter mini-empire where every sandwich is named for a family member; try the “Uncle Jimmy,” stacked with prosciutto, soppressata, mozzarella, sweet peppers, and Calabrian chile on stirato bread — perfect to grab and eat in Central Park." - Adam Reiner, Naomi Otsu

This was a solid sandwich joint. I loved the uncle chub. The hot sopressata was so good and perfectly fresh and salty. The bread was a little hard for my liking, but overall really delicious. The staff is also super friendly and really helpful with ordering. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!

Google
Fresh, tasty sandwich! The ingredients are as fresh and flavorful as they come. This place feels like an authentic Italian-American sub shop. I got the Uncle Jimmy and liked it. The bread had great flavor but was a bit chewy. It had a thick slice of fresh mozzarella, arugula, EVOO, balsamic, prosciutto, hot reds, salami, etc. The subs ran from $16-20 but they’re quite large and filling. Worth trying!

Omggg I’m so glad they opened a location on the upper east side. We are blessed to get this gem! I got the uncle jimmy sandwich and it was divine, the bread was fresh and chewy with just the right amount of crunch. I could see them slicing the meat as they took my order- it was fresh and really quality flavor. I’m obsessed with the calabrian chili - it had my mouth tingling. And I like that they don’t overdo it on the mozzarella or arugula- just a perfect balance. Service was friendly and quick - you could see the guys hussling. I took my order to go, but the inside had two small tables for two and there was a table or two outside. The decor feels like a homey 90s vibe like your house growing up. It’s charming. I hope they have success in the neighborhood bc this is gonna be my go-to spot for a sandwich! The price is comparable to other spots in NYC and the quality and size makes it worth it IMO.

Google
Really yummy sandwich shop! The Jimmy was delicious (and perfect amount of spice) and pictured is the Ricky - we got both on the hero roll. Awesome staple sandwich place

Google
One of the best sandwich shops in UES! We got the Uncle Jimmy and I would definitely get it again— I would try it on a hero instead of the French baguette it comes on. Overall amazing!

Google
Amazing Italian sandwiches! We got the Uncle Jimmy and are now absolutely obsessed. The size of the sandwich is perfect (larger than other known Italian sandwich places 👀) AND we got them so quickly! 10/10 experience

Google
Fine, but not close to worth the price in a neighborhood with so many other options. I appreciate the creative combinations but found my sandwich to be bland. I’d prefer to go to a local deli (heavenly market or garden basket) for close to the same level of quality at a fraction of the price.

First time trying out a sandwich from Regina's Grocery and I'm telling you all , No disappointment there. It was the sandwich I was craving for. Andrew from 88st location made it with love after his warming welcome for us first time customers. My husband and I had the Uncle Jimmy with that delicious chili spread. My daughter ordered the Uncle Phil sandwich and my brother ordered the Little Phil. We did not wait to go home as we planned to to eat the sandwiches. We also had to purchase the fresh Mozzarella ball. It's a must to go back and we shall. Whomever reads this from the company, please thank Andrew for us for his awesome and welcoming customer service. Its always a plus to have welcoming and pleasant people greet us. 10 out of 10. See you all soon. We also have to visit the location at Murray for the Chicken Parm. Can't wait!

Yelp
It's a very small outfit, but everything was fresh and they make the sandwiches right in front of you . The service was okay, not particularly friendly or extra in any way but it was fine. The bread wasn't the best, but I don't think they make it in house. The bread was the only negative about the sandwich. Everything else was fresh, especially the meat. Also, this location doesn't have any hot sandwiches, like the other location on orchard ie: not meatball sandwiches. The only other semi complaint, a gentleman came in 4-5 minutes after me and ordered. He received his sandwich the same time I did, actually it was first but within 30 seconds. I waited a total of 10 minutes, and that was a bit annoying that the process wasn't first come first serve.

Yelp
Awe man where do I start, this place is great. It such a small shop with the most welcoming staff. Walked in and off the bat already knew what I wanted because I saw this spot on social media. Came to try the Uncle Jimmy Sandwich and I was not disappointed. The whole overall sandwich was delicious. Tasted fresh, great amount, looks appetizing and is just overall a 10/10. It is a small shop but you will find seating wether it's inside or outdoor seating they have. Also it's a great place for just on the go super fast service. Love this place !

Yelp
Try: Uncle Jimmy Sandwich! Why: Really good Italian sandwich shop and a great addition to UES. Uncle Jimmy Sandwich was layered with Prosciutto, Sopressata, Smoked Ham, Mozzarella, Arugula, and Roasted Reds. It also had Chili Spread, Olive Oil, and Balsamic, which had a nice kick and added flavor. I didn't love the Stirato Bread but everything in between was delicious. I also tried Lil Phil Sandwich with Smoked Ham, Provolone Cheese, Lettuce and Tomatoes. It was a good classic sandwich but I felt it needed some sauce or oil for added flavor. Notes: Small and neat sandwich shop with a few tables inside and outside. Loved seeing the meat display and the Italian ingredients on wall. Workers were friendly and quick. I came on a Saturday during lunch time with a couple people ahead of me in line. I hope more locals discover this shop and I look forward to trying their other sandwiches!

Yelp
Definitely one of the best spots to eat now on the Upper East Side, another little location similar to the original just opened right off 2nd Ave. Same as all the others so far, but they may soon offer more with access to a bigger kitchen here. For now, get the Uncle John or the Roman, two of the best sandwiches on the menu.

Yelp
So good so fresh. I've wanted to check this place out since it opened not too long ago. Today I stopped in and ordered a grandma Lucy tuna sandwich and I was not disappointed. The person who took my order was super friendly which I loved and when I got home I found an Italian cake treat in my bag. THANK YOU!!!! today has been a lil crappy and that totally helped. I definitely recommend.

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches I have bad on the Upper East Side. I have been to the actual place twice since it opened and I have had delivery from this place. The people who work here are very nice. One of the guys remembered me. I usually get the Lil phil sandwich which is smoked ham, provolone cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. It's chefs kiss... sooo good! They have other types of sandwiches as well but I have not tried them. I think this place used to be a barber shop. As you can see in pictures it is not a big space. They have interesting things on the wall too.

Yelp
Regina's Grocery is a fun new italian sandwich shop on 88th st. The staff is friendly. I've had an uncle chubby twice now and both were pretty good! I'll be back to try the uncle phil since the uncle chubby didn't 100% do it for me. It's a small establishment but there is limited seating and sandwiches come out within ~10 minutes.

Yelp
Amazing sammie spot. This was so good I got it two days in a row. Ingredients are fresh and unique. Boys in front are super friendly and welcoming. This place is going to be an amazing spot just like downtown!

Yelp
Like all things, my impressions are subjective but I detested the stifata bread that makes this place so highly regarded. It's chewy to a point where it feels like tearing leather -- which is so disappointing, because the stuff between the bread is amazing and the sandwich incredibly well built. I went back a second time to try it on a hero, but that wasn't so great, either. I'll stick with Milano's Market instead.

Yelp
Uncle jimmy is so good, same with the other ones I've tried. Great spot for sandwiches.

Yelp
Great place. Glad they opened another location. The Uncle Jimmy is delicious. Highly recommend.

Oh B.

Yelp
This place just opened up so I know they are adjusting but here's my thoughts 1) service wonderful!!!!! Staff was amazing 2) ordered an uncle John and was craving hero bread but they seemed to have run out and had to deal with whatever was available. I'll blame it on them being new and figuring it out. 3) ingredients very fresh but they missed a few ingredients on the uncle John like oil and vinegar:(. I'll blame it on them being new. 4) would like sides like (potato salad, macaroni salad, or coleslaw et ). Chips don't cut it on the UES 5) homeless tent outside didn't help or make it feel welcome Overall it's a hit and wish this place the best. I will be back for sure when they are fully stocked. I would've given it a 5 but I know they have other establishments and should know how to manage opening week. And due to 3 and 4 above.

Yelp
Best Italian wedges, hoagies, subs what you call it's the best sandwich in UES . The meat is very very generous & and wonderful selection of combinations .
