These Are New Orleans’s Essential Dive Bars

"The headline at Rendezvous on Magazine Street? A huge selection of draft beers, spanning classic wheat ales, juicy IPAs, and toasted amber ales, all chilled to precisely 32 degrees. (True to dive form, all the canned classics, like Miller, Modelo, Red Stripe, etc., are also on the menu.) Established in 1969, Rendezvous was a liquor store and a brothel in a past-life — these days it’s a neighborhood go-to for bingo nights, billiard leagues, trivia, and stand-up. The patio is pet-friendly, too. Keep an eye on Rendezvous’s Instagram for the latest details on rotating pop-up kitchens." - Eater Staff

"Why do we love this Magazine Street dive bar? Because Happy Hour is from 3 to 8 p.m. weekdays, because there are 11 TVs for game watching, a pool table AND Rendezvous is dog friendly inside and outside. Google
Great neighborhood bar right on magazine and 8th Street. They are open late. I have a pool table and pinball machines. They have a pop-up outside every night, come get some great food and drinks.

Google
J Mac was great made me good margs, and he kind of funny. I will be back!! Love the pop up food outside !

Google
So we came here last year and there was a dog sitting at the bar. Love it. Great atmosphere and a very good beer list. We are IPA lovers and you have to try their local brew on tap Jucifer. A nice relaxed atmosphere to try local beer that isn’t super touristy.

Wood

Google
Smells like old beer. Service is good. Bring your ID. Lots of TVs to watch the game. Bathroom needs a clean up. Food truck out front was awesome!

Christiane Miller

Google
Everytime I come in town I stop here. Nice people, strong drinks, friendly staff. Good times.

Ahhh Rendezvous I had some really great times here before and right after Katrina. This was a super popular place where I used to know the majority of people in the bar. Unfortunately the crowd has shifted and I rarely know anybody in this place anymore and it has gotten a whole lot less fun in here. They do keep the A/C at a nice cool temp and keep it nice dank and dark (the way I often like my dive bars to be). They also have some pretty good specials on beer and the bartenders are usually very on top of things with good service. They used to offer FREE Nirvana Indian food on Sundays here but they don't do that anymore and Nirvana doesn't even do their buffet anymore so both joints just seem way less than they used to be sadly.

Brandon Coleman

Google
Dive bar. Enough said: great prices, combos w/ alcohol (Who. Freaking. Knew???) witty bartender who knows her stuff. Pool tables.

Google
Drink was good and strong. Free Comedy show was awesome.

Yelp
Well you just have to go have a drink in this old tavern! The bartender was wonderful, the beers were big---and on happy hour even on a Saturday in March! The juke box was playing twangy fun music.

Yelp
Can't believe I've never made a review here! Rendezvous is a local dive bar that my friends and I frequent at when we are looking for a quick drink and relaxation. Cheap strong drinks every time! Pool tables available. Juke box playing. Sports/tv shows on. It's a nice little spot even with outdoor seating. If you asked me a year ago, I would've said this bar needed a face lift. Now, it's had many upgrades made making it feel cleaner, more inviting and enjoyable to be in. I miss the old bartenders that Rendezvous had prior to the "buyout", but the new bartenders are very attentive as well and fun to talk to. They've also added lite bites to eat! Still wouldn't recommend this place for eats because its a simple simple simple menu, but if your standards are set low and are looking for a quick snack, yes. Overall; good spot.

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times, and each time was great. Most recently, popped in on a Sunday afternoon to catch the end of the Women's Basketball National Championship. About 10-15 patrons... the place was clean and smelled good, staff was friendly and welcoming, pool table was popping, and lots of different games were on. The bartender was super friendly and made sure we had what we needed. As I can't drink beer anymore, I opted for champagne and it was actually decent! Usually at a beer bar, it's flat and either too sweet or just meh. Really enjoyed this visit, and certainly look forward to returned the next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Decent alternative to bulldog which is closed for renovations, friendly staff and chilled glasses for beer. Seems like locals like the atmosphere based on number having a good time indoors

Lauren N.

Yelp
Drinks are cheap as ever living heck and the staff is so sweet! I love that on game days they do an Indian buffet. Definitely worth checking out.

Scott M.

Yelp
Walked in to watch the Philly playoff game and shoot some pool. Very friendly bartender, ordered a beer and a cold glass, presented with no problems. ( previous review I saw said they had no glassware?) chatted with a couple folks, very friendly vibe. Shot a few games with a local named Woody, he showed me a few tricks of the trade! Had a great time.

Yelp
It's a basic bar with the usual happy hour suspects. We had some time to kill before our dinner reservation at Gris Gris so we decided to grab a drink here. Nice brews on tap, tons of well drinks and they did look pretty strong. I think one of their happy hour specials is a double pour well drink for like $5? Something like that. We had a $5 Miller highlife and a shot of whisky. That was fun. Clean bathrooms. Lofty spacious interior. No frills. Not sure if I would spend an evening here but it was a good stop on our way to dinner. I think we were here like 25 minutes tops.

Nola-Q S.

Yelp
New management/ ownership. No longer serving tap beer in chilled glasses, only go-cups. Bartenders that are totally disengaged. Only half the bottle & can beer selection. Change isn't always a good thing.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
I'd cut my own Dick off to drink here. This is the best bar. Staff: fucking great Prices: the Tits Vibe: top notch All the games, (pool golden tee darts) all the sports (no seriously, they have every major game) And there's usually a great local pop up either on premise or doing fast and free delivery to your barstool. Mmmm so
google avatar

Yelp
I hit up New Orleans for a weekend for my buddy's bachelor party. On a Saturday night, we had dinner at Dat Dog on Magazine Street and we were looking for somewhere to grab some drinks close by. We stumbled upon The Rendezvous Tavern and it's your typical dive bar. There was an older crowd and they have a pool table. It's a chill spot if you're trying to grab some drinks in a casual, no-frills environment.

Julianne H.

Yelp
Came here on St paddy's day, great atmosphere. The bartender (not comb) was not interested in pleasing the patrons. It is NCAA and behind the bar on the tv is Dr Phil... when asked to change channel, he said it will be a while. ugh. So I asked the other bartender named Comb, he immediately got on the TV and changed the channel! Kudos to comb! He saved the day, and the may say, all patrons were happy to watch the tournament over Dr. Phil!!
google avatar

Kasen M.

Yelp
Cheap drinks. All the sports on tv. Pool table. Fairly quick service. Some outdoor seating. $10 minimum for credit card service. (Don't care for that) The tables were a little sticky while no one coming around to clean them, ever. We went on a Sunday during Football season. It was crowded, but we still got a seat. The drinks were so cheap, and you can open carry in NOLA, so we ended up stopping here twice while we walked up and down Magazine Street.

Yelp
What a refreshing take on bad publicity. Bravo to your method of responding to a review about a shitty employee you have on staff. Hopefully you've found better applicants and haven't had to close your doors due to a couple of bad employees and a global pandemic. I stand by my initial review, but 3 stars for reminding me how terrible of a time I had at your bar 5 years ago. How do I get one of these shirts???
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
The Rendezvous is an interesting place. Back in the day it was a neighborhood old man bar. But times change and maybe the old men aren't as plentiful in neighborhood bars? I've been hearing lots of friends sing the RT praises. So 1st weekend of parades, I got some crawfish at Big Fisherman down the street and met up with some out of town friends to visit and chow down. Bartender was super nice and happy hour was until 8pm on a FRIDAY. Yes please. We sat at a table and made sure to clean up after ourselves. Lots of different folks in the bar, including some dog friends. Will definitely be back

Yelp
This is definitely my go-to bar whenever I visit this part of town on Magazie St. Such a chill, laid back atmosphere. The female bartender that's always here for Happy Hour is quick & attentive. She definitely knows her drinks and I love hoe she works the bar and crowd. Great place to frequent if you wanna chill out at a bar & relax your mind. Great to people watch here as well as it usually brings in a diverse crowd of people. The best part is they have free wi-fi

Yelp
Local bar. Friendly service! Very reasonable priced alcohol! Located at a corner. Easy to find. 5 Greyhound Drinks for $14.00! What a steal! As you enter this bar... you will smell that old building character. Sorta like the old book in the library that's been sitting there for while. The bar tender! She was so sweet! The people in the bar were locals and were more than happy to tell you where to go. There are pool tables here. Plenty of sitting space. Casino Slot machines. And a juke box. Definitely a casual bar. Fun. Sweet. Friendly. And most of all it's so affordable and reasonable! Definitely a must visit if your in New Orleans! Or just grab a drink to go and enjoy more of the city!
google avatar

Yelp
Good divey bar to try. Its dark and loud but the service is great. They have pool tables and tv's throughout the bar. They have daily HH specials and beer on tap. The specials are a tad confusing because everything is written on the board but in addition to the daily specials they also have a Happy Hour. They have a few seats outdoors with a food truck in the front. Good spot to stop and grab a beer but not to hang out for hours on end. I would recommend for a cheap drink and good service.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
This is the bar on magazine where if you frequent, everyone will know your name. Cheap booze, and random walk in from all over, it's a must if you enjoy mag street.
google avatar

Cody K.

Yelp
Affordable drinks, lively atmosphere, and plenty of seating. There's not much to dislike about "The Vous". During the week nights this bar is commonly frequented by service industry staff who are all there for a good time. The bar offers several tables in both the front and back of the establishment, which provides ample enough room for outside lounging. There's a jukebox, video poker, billiards, and darts. Plenty of activities for anyone to participate in.

Ryab L.

Yelp
Vibe was good do to the guests, and people.. drinks on the other hand, tasted bad, under poured, and the bartender (tall bald white guy) had the sadest unwelcoming attitude.. havnt even been here before, I work at emerils. He made the experience bad, and we are in the same Industry.. I didn't even wanna order a drink because of his attitude.
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
The bars in this city that I like to frequent can be described as divey, but that gets in the way of the fact that these types of bars are what make New Orleans the city that it is. Cheap drinks, people of all different walks of life coming in, and good conversations make this place fine by me. Good beer selection, big TV's to watch the games, and all around nice atmosphere. Can not beat it.
google avatar

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
Quaint bar on magazine street! Virginia was a nice bartender! There is a pool table and darts. Drinks were very reasonable!
google avatar

Brian F.

Yelp
If your looking for drinks, a pool table, and locals then this is your type of place. I'll be back for sure.
google avatar

JDamian A.

Yelp
We used the Rendezvous as a meeting place for a three day bar crawl. We had 35 people meet us here and hung out for an hour and half. The star was awesome and fun. They never once panicked when our group started rolling in. They just made us drinks k=like it was no big deal. Really an awesome spot and so much fun.
google avatar

Jia B.

Yelp
Solid bar in the Irish Channel area. They have a good selection of beers and pretty strong drinks at reasonable prices. Rendezvous is also a great place to watch a football game. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and they had all of the NFL games playing on different TVs so all of my friends were happy! They also have a pool table if you're looking to shoot pool and hang out with some friends. There are usually food trucks outside on weekends (I've seen La Cocinita there the most often) and I saw people ordering delivery to the bar when there wasn't a food truck outside, so its nice that you can stay and drink without having to leave for food. All in all Rendezvous isn't my favorite bar but it is a chill bar to hang out at with a group of friends before moving on to somewhere else. Drinks -- 4 stars Price -- 4 stars Service -- 4 stars Atmosphere -- 2 stars

Johnston M.

Yelp
The only reason you come here is to not give a f*ck. Truly an amazing establishment. Ryan is a gem.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
This is a fun place to get a beer and play darts with friends. My husband got a Yuengling here and at the Bulldog on tap, and guess which one was fresher? This one. The prices here are very good as well, and this bar is equally accepting of well-behaved pets. It's not as fancy as The Bulldog, but don't be fooled by appearances.
google avatar

Jerry C.

Yelp
DO NOT VISIT, I REPEAT DO NOT VISIT! YOU WILL BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OFF and lied to. You will have a horrible experience And time here if you are a tourist! Do not come, yes the prices were moderate; but the way you get treated as tourist who doesn't know the common way of a place they've never been too is horrendous. I for one am not one to be a difficult customer as I myself work in customer service; but the manager (whose name I don't know but is a female who works night there) was extremely rude/impatient because I asked why was everything else mentioned, but the fact that there is a $10 minimum if you are using a credit card...the manager (whose name she wouldn't reveal) word for word said "why are you explaining this to me? Why is it my problem" I remained respectful and tried to tell the manager that as tourist, how can we know this policy? She proceeded to walk away...keeping this short, the manager over heard me speaking to another person just like everyone else and was offended because i was explaining to a gentleman what just occurred. And for me explaining my experience to the person, she called the bouncer to escort me out. Again I am not a difficult person I explain to you as a reader both sides. 1. Yes the prices are moderate but if you value respect and don't want to be taken advantage of I REPEAT DO NOT GO TO THIS BAR. think about I got kicked out for having a private conversation like everyone else. I understand that as a business you do get charged for every customer who pays with card, the rule/policy isn't the problem...it's the manner in which this policy is executed. Not a single person reading this would want to be surprised by an unknown rule and get mistreated for asking about it. I recommend Sobou or Ms. Mae's as other option.
google avatar

John L. H.

Yelp
I have been to Rendezvous a bunch of times, but it seems that I am never there for long. Most of my experience has been during St. Patrick's parade time or when leisurely shopping along Magazine. It is a good place to get a beer and use the bathroom, but I have yet to spend several hours there. The bar does have a definite divey quality to it. It is dark and seems that it hasn't been updated in a really long time. But unlike many other local dives, it is fairly large inside. That makes for a weird divey/neighborhood bar feel. I am sure that I will eventually spend more time here, and once I do, I will update my review.
google avatar

Loren P.

Yelp
best bar in town babey service is always good, drinks are priced well, always good music playing, and now they got HOT DAWGS hell yeah
google avatar

Marielle S.

Yelp
Rendezvous is my second favorite Magazine St. bar. They have a great beer selection and a great crowd and atmosphere. The place is kind of dark, which makes for a good kind of "underground" vibe. They have booths, if you don't want to sit at the bar and they have pool tables, if you are in the mood to shoot pool. They have a fantastic internet jukebox, and video poker, if that's your thing. In my opinion, this place is everything that The Balcony Bar used to be.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Had a great time playing darts in the back area. Definitely a divey spot to get a good, cheap drink among local people. I was definitely feeling it from a couple rum punches! No frills & affordable. Also I was surprised to see someone had their giant dog in the bar! That was new to me, maybe it's a New Orleans thing I'm not used to?
google avatar

Dorothy Y.

Yelp
Decent happy hour, $2.50 for a pint of Abita draft and 2 for 1 well drinks. Dark and divey at 4 in the afternoon. A chill spot for meeting up with friends after work. Bartender was nice and chatted with some of the other regulars, while some just-off-work laborers played pool in the middle of the room. I've walked by at night time and it for some reason seems poppin', with people spilling on the curb to smoke their cigarettes (I assume because it's full as they could of course smoke inside). Perhaps the hipsters are bitter about being chased away from the Bulldog down/across the street? There was an excellent menu for Gott Gourment (across the street) (mmm cheese fries) regarding Sunday afternoon football game catering. Looks a good place to go to watch a game, two flatscreens, and a chill atmosphere. I might stop by again.
google avatar

Christin D.

Yelp
Jay is the most. Always so lucky and happy to see her when I get off of work. Working on mag and coming here to see her face is the most amazing!! Definitely stop by if you can. Bomb drink specials. Dope pop ups. Do it.
google avatar

Carol K.

Yelp
I'm a girl who enjoys a good dive bar every now and again. And Rendezvous Tavern is just that . . . a dive bar. We "needed" a drink. Well, we probably didn't need one but it had been a least an hour since our last one so when we looked up- we found ourselves in front of the Rendezvous. Dog friendly, we had to climb over a couple of the beasts to get up to the bar, but once we did the bartender was accommodating and friendly, The drink special of the day was a raspberry vodka limeade. Yowza ! This thing packed a wallop as it was mostly vodka. Even waiting for the ice to melt barely made a dent! We took our drinks out to sit at the tables on the sidewalk and watch the people walk by. So entertaining- at least an hour went by before we were able to move on. I doubt I would spend much time indoors as it smells like smoke and is VERY dark- but for a drink to go in this neck of the woods- a good choice!
google avatar

Ed C.

Yelp
Im here in NoLA, Garden District.... been walking around Magazine St... all day, getting the feel of the City, putting tons of attention to the local scene, what makes NoLA... enigmatic center of Cult. Been finding my ways to the locals some of them are super welcoming, some are just yuck.... NoLA is not for everyone. let get into this Bar, No frills, cool beer, music tunes ebox, pool table, mixed pop/hipster/blue collar/GenX crowd... i think that is what I like the place, would.I give ot a 4 star if I was drunk, maybe... but I am cheap on my awards... come and check out the place is a like / hate place..for me is thumps up.
google avatar

Colleen R.

Yelp
This bar is the best. They have games, plenty of seating, an outdoor patio, a bunch of TVs, and there's usually food on site. Witty bartenders and a good beer selection. You can't beat it!
google avatar

Misty C.

Yelp
It's not a dive bar...it's just a bar. We stopped in during happy hour, which lasts until 8pm. The happy hour is a selling point since every other happy hour seems to end by 6:30. Another selling point: 2-for-1 mixed drinks during happy hour. And the drinks were big and strong. The crowd was mixed and laid back during the week. I think this will be one of our go-to places for cheap drinks. Just a great place to hang out and get your drink on without paying an arm and a leg.
google avatar

Shay M.

Yelp
Great neighborhood hangout! Awesome Happy Hour specials/prices. Bar staff fast and friendly! They have great pop ups too! Dog friendly a plus!
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
Everyone complaining about the tall bald guy is stupid. He's precious. And so is Gordeaux. Disagree with me and I'll fight you!!! Follow me @nola_unicorn on IG please. I don't really wanna fight.
google avatar

Eddie C.

Yelp
A really good alternative to the Bulldog if funds are running low. There is plenty of draft beer to pull from and the bottled selection is fair as well. Especially if you have a picky, but beautiful sister in law that only drinks Woodchucks or ciders. Did I mention the prices are low? Not Brothers 3 low but close. Nice big booths to spread out in and have a chance to talk to your friends. Alot of stook seating around. Dart boards and a pool table. Very roomy. Has a internet jukebox with all the standards and a little bit of outside seating. I havent been here on a sports night yet so I cant tell ya if this is a Saints bar or a Steelers bar, but I do try and pass by here when im in the area. I'll make sure to take more pics next chance I get
google avatar

Christine D.

Yelp
After being told that the restaurant I was at did not serve any alcohol. I made a quick visit across the street to Rendezvous Tavern. The bartendress made a bloody mary today with 90% vodka that tasted great- with fixins' including green beens. The bar was dark and kinda quiet for a early afternoon but i could see locals (now me!) going there for a daily brew.

Robert D.

Yelp
Rendezvous Tavern is one of the best hidden Indian food restaurants in the Irish channel. Order off the secret menu and get a small pizza to dip into your fresh PBR. I would rate this more than 5 stars if I could.
google avatar

Ellen C.

Yelp
This is a pretty consistently legit place, but I just never found myself loving it very much. It's a very much dive bar and seems to be well traveled by locals of all ages - a very casual crowd, that's for sure. It's not very well lit, it has a certain rustic-y, unrefined charm - the drinks are affordable. I've never had an issue with the bartenders and their service. I've only been here three or four times, but it's just kind of nondescript. Pretty all right place to meet up with your buddies to grab a drink or two. It can get a bit crowded on the weekends, but it's a good winding up or winding down watering hole.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Cheap drinks, nice bartenders, good place to pop in for a beer or hang around to watch a game. Bathrooms were a little dirty, but it is a dive bar. Nothing crazy out of the ordinary.
google avatar

Shernisia J.

Yelp
Nice bar with music good music, lots of televisions, a pool table and indoor/outdoor seating. Drinks a good and pricing is reasonable!
google avatar

Wes T.

Yelp
Listed as a dive bar, but in my estimation more of a NOLA locals bar. There's nothing fancy going on here, but there's nothing too bad going on, either. You'll get a lot of folks with dogs, and maybe some crusties out front, but nothing too bad. Put another way: a tourist bar? Not so much. But I like this bar a lot. It has what a drinker needs: alcohol, servers, and decent tunes (last one's optional, but they have Touch Tunes). If you live in the area and are looking for a place to wet your whistle and are feeling OK with a bit of dust in the corners, thus is your place.
google avatar

Ahmed K.

Yelp
I have a little bit of bad news for the recently converted AmEx carrying hipsters of DC: Your "dive bars" in DC are not dive bars. As a matter of fact, if you set one foot into a true dive like Rendezvous Tavern in New Orleans, you will be so appalled, not only at the non-9-dollar beer selection, but at the brazen service, the "Mos Eisley" Cantina crowd, and the lack of any serious provisions that you will probably storm out in a massive tantrum. Oh well. Otherwise, I really enjoyed Rendezvous Tavern. I mean if you love cheap drinks, cool conversations, weird people, bitchy waiters, cigarette smoke flying all around, and the smell of stale beer look nowhere else. It's a great meet up spot for day drinking, conversation, and even pre-gaming before setting off to some of the more hotter spots. There is no pretending here - just plain and simple realities on the ground and being who you are. Legendary.
google avatar

Alan B.

Yelp
I only go here when I'm getting a drink to go while walking. It's not a bad bar, it's fun with cheap drinks, but if you see a tall, white, bald guy with tattoos behind the bar don't bother. I'm a local and been here at least 15 times and have never once had a good experience with him. Takes forever for drinks, ignores me when there's like 6 people in the bar and there's no reason it should take 15 minutes for a beer. When it's crowded there's no way he even gives you the time of day. The other bartenders seem good but he's usually the one I see, avoid if he's there.
google avatar

Adrienne L.

Yelp
I come here, tonight made me never want to put money into your business again. The male bartender that was working tonight was unbelievably rude and dismissive. He accosted a group of women, from the neighborhood, that we were singing and playing music with. He harassed them repeatedly and threatened them. The reason people come to New Orleans is to experience the culture of New Orleans . This asshole ruined our neighborhood experience, he stifled culture.
