15 Best Breweries in Charlotte

"Resident Culture joined Charlotte's booming beer scene in 2017 when it opened in a building that’s been in owner Philip McLamb’s family since 1982, when McLamb’s father ran his printing company out of it. Now McLamb and his wife Amanda have converted the space into a taproom with an outdoor patio, beer garden, and a private event space. The beer—hazy IPAs and funky farmhouse brews—is great, but the cartoonish murals on the walls, done by full-time staff member and local illustrator Maryssa Pickett will stick with you." - Lauren Levine

We attend a Philippino festival in their parking lot called "Palengke". The food was amazing: and everyone was so friendly. The bar staff was kind and very pleasant towards everyone. Great event.

Google
Love this place! Resident Culture has great beer, chill vibes, and an awesome atmosphere. Super queer-friendly and welcoming, which makes it feel like a safe space to just relax and enjoy. Major bonus points for being dog-friendly too—my boys loved it as much as I did. We stopped here on the way back to Raleigh, but will definitely be back!

Google
Fantastic place, Brandon was an awesome bartender! Pinball machines, anime big screen TV and excellent beers. This place is top tier.

Indie Arcade Wave

Google
Great beer selection, a selection of NA beers and delta drinks, too. Pinball and ganes to play with plenty of seating.

Google
The beer was great. The one bartender was very accommodating. The female bartender made a snide remark about wanting to taste beers before purchasing. I can honestly say this is the first craft brewery where I have had that experience. I still made sure my tip reflected my appreciation for their service. And at the same time, I think an awareness should be created that EVERY OTHER craft brewery I have ever visited, kindly accommodated tasting before purchasing. As such, I will think twice about a return visit.

Google
Great brewery! Beer is very good. Had an Italian Pilsner, DIPA, and a lager while here and found everything to be tasty. The space itself has a nice mojo and there’s plenty of parking including an overflow lot. I was told this was the best brewery in Charlotte by a friend, and was not disappointed. I’ve only been to Resident Culture and Birdsong while passing through Charlotte, and while both are quality this gets the top spot.

Google
Really NICE space especially outside! Beers are average to a bit above average. BUT $15.50 for 4 TINY little beers (flight) is RIDICULOUS.

Google
Nice spot to hang out with friends, play games, enjoy good weather. Came Saturday afternoon and spent a couple hours here. I had some wine and we tried the empanada food truck. We pushed two tables together to accommodate our larger party size. It was busy and lively, nice upbeat energy. There are a few pinball machines and some long communal tables inside as well. I wish they had some fire pits/heaters or something though because it did start to get a bit chilly at the end! I would come back though.

Yelp
This is one of those breweries that's big and sprawling with lots of different nooks and crannies and places to hang out. Equally great for an intimate first date or to meet a big group of people. Ambience is local and crunchy. Beers and solid and venture a little bit into the experimental side of things.

Yelp
There was a major food fair going on and Resident Culture was supporting this event. Beer selection and prices are good. I liked the dog friendly atmosphere with water bowls and walking areas around the brewery. Music is piped in, restrooms are clean, and I enjoyed the pinball machines but they weren't the classic types from the 1980s or 1990s. Staff is pleasant, but parking will be a major challenge on food fair days.

Yelp
Stopped by before heading to an early bed time for our first day in charlotte! I enjoyed a porter and my husband enjoyed a west coast IPA - both of which were great! We enjoyed the games they had available and the seating was plenty and comfy. The little shopping area with merch was cute and the vending machine was a fun addition. Our beers were poured a little light with a heavy head which might be a turn away for some - so be aware if that is the case for you. But the bartender was nice and helped with our selection!

Yelp
swung by Resident Culture Bar for their Día de los Muertos event, and the atmosphere was straight-up electric. They had awesome vendors, lively music, and some seriously tasty tacos--definitely worth checking out. The whole night had a cool, celebratory feel, and I'm already hyped to come back to see what the bar's like on a regular night. If you're in the mood for good vibes, good food, and a solid crowd, Resident Culture's the spot.

Yelp
Vibe is the best - parking is good. They have a decent lot attached but they have a second gravel lot available right down the street. The server was super nice and chatty. Answered all of my questions. Beer was good, good variety and rotating taps. We came on a Saturday and they had a table set out for book and plant swap, leave one take one. I'm so sad I didn't have anything to leave, but need to come back next weekend!

Yelp
If you want to bring your kids to a brewery, not watch them, and let them run wild, this is the brewery for you!! Seriously, no joke the atmosphere was such that I could not enjoy myself whatsoever. Unattended children were all over the place. I felt like each time I got a drink or food item it was a challenge and obstacle course trying to get them back to my table without spilling or dropping because I was trying to dodge kids. Service was also pretty blah and the beer just average.

Yelp
Lots of seating and best of all in Plaza Midwood: PARKING! Dog-friendly and lots of beer options. Also, Kenzie is the best!

Yelp
We enjoyed our time at Resident Culture Brewing Company in Plaza Midwood. This is a local Charlotte brewery that opened in September 2017. We walked over here after hanging out at Pinhouse, about 1-2 blocks down the street (Central Ave). I left my car in the Pinhouse lot and went back to grab it after our visit to Resident Culture. Resident Culture doesn't have its own dedicated lot. You can street-park on Landis Ave for free. You can also park in the Veterans Memorial Park parking lot across the street, next to the tennis courts, for free. Physically, this was your standard brewery. It had a spacious, functional buildout with plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating. It was dog-friendly and they have ceiling fans and heat lamps. We sat in a well-covered section of the patio. Resident Culture also had a row of umbrella-covered tables that led to a large tent. It looked like the tent may have been set up for a special event or something. Maybe it's more of a "permanent" fixture right now. I don't know. Our large group had picnic tables right next to The Dumpling Lady food truck. The truck had a steady stream of customers for the duration of our visit. The food smelled good. Beers were ordered inside at the bar. You could buy canned and bottled beer to take home. The big screens behind the bar each displayed a menu selection of 18 Resident Culture beers. We visited late on a Saturday afternoon and they were already out of four beers. Not a big deal, but my wife did want at least one or two of them. The beers we tried tasted A-OK. The staff was friendly and cool. This place was busy, but not crowded. Comfortable.

Yelp
Resident Culture boasts awesome beer and vibes! We came on a Friday evening, and enjoyed checking out the food trucks in the parking lot. Some of us got lobster rolls, and others got Mexican food. Both beers I tried were awesome! Squirrel Friends is a tropical sour with flavors of guava, coconut, and lime. Yum! Forever Alone is a hazy NE IPA, and this iteration had notes of peach ring. The brewery is very chill; you can request board games at the bar, and there's a variety of indoor and outdoor seating. This spot is great for groups, and I'll happily return!

Yelp
Great beer, venue, and vibes! I love this brewery and the employees that work there are always quick and kind.

Yelp
MISLEADING: Photo shows brisket, but it is really chopped brisket. Yes yes the description says chopped but I'm a visual person so ordered brisket based on photo. MISLEADING

Yelp
This place is nice to hang with friends over some beer. The beer mugs are interesting because they are so big. They stand out from other breweries because of this. You can buy a mug if you wish from this place. Atmosphere: nice Staff: friendly Dog friendly. I have been here a few times and they were all good experiences. Will be back in the future!
google avatar

Yelp
We love Resident Culture! The staff is always so nice and helpful. The place is very big with adequate seating, both indoors and outdoors. They have unique names for their beers. It's mostly IPA's but they do have a few non IPA options. They do not have a kitchen, but the Dumpling Lady has a permanent food truck there, and the last couple times we went, there was a hot dog stand. We love coming here because we can bring our dog and sit both inside or outside!

Yelp
After a hard day when you get the first sip of your cold beer/cider pure enjoyment, first I gotta say I love the creative flavors they have specially on the sour beers, they are my favorites, second the ciders, the ciders are wining too yesterday I had a cider they have (unfortunately they didn't have in cans so I had some there) it was freaking delicious , me and my mom both enjoyed it , had that cranberry bitter flavor at the end, lightly sweet , beautiful a master piece. To go I got a sour ad a couple of hard seltzer, the sour was good paralysis by analysis is the name if you like yuzu u will enjoy it , it has a bitterness at the end but yuzu is a bit bitter is refreshing, the seltzer I'll give it a , not the best, now on my favorites that I had there are quantum wobble and fragile masculinity and and the cider I had yesterday , I love that pets are allowed here, and I also like to go there on the early hours when there is almost no one there to enjoy a little peace and quiet, for food this place serve no food but they have a food truck to come in , I'm not sure if they allowed you to bring your own...

Yelp
Nice. Very quiet but it wasn't too loud. Cashless-card payment only. Huge craft beer selection. Pretty much self serve including cleaning up after yourself. One negative. No signage. In the daytime the name is on the building, brown letters in a lighter brown building-at night no lit sign so we drove right past.
google avatar

Yelp
Good service, great beers, expansive establishment, lots of indoor and outdoor seating, with a food truck slanging grub. It's a brewery, what more do you need besides what's listed
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
Not one of my favorite breweries in Charlotte. First off, super, super limited parking and it's on Central Ave, so yeah, super busy street. Good luck finding parking anytime the place is busy. They don't take cash and they don't do flights, so yeah, they money grub you with the half pours until you can hopefully find something you like. Can't stand places that won't do flights...to me, it just screams they don't care about their customers, but whatever. Music was playing too loud last time I was there and most pints will run you 6 bucks, but higher ABV beers are more expensive. Pretty typical. No food, but they bring in food trucks. They are dog friendly and they do have free wifi.

Rich W.

Yelp
Always a fun time. Killer atmosphere. Indoor and outdoor areas are spacious. Staff is super friendly and the beer is always bangin'. Highly recommended

Yelp
Eh. My favorite thing about this place are the indoor and outdoor spaces. Unique and eclectic - right up my alley and I especially loved the Curio vending machine. The outside is really nice as well with fire pits and a large amount of space/seating. Maybe it was an off day but the bartender had the personality of a wet mop and I felt like an inconvenience. He didn't smile; he barely uttered any kind of word - even when I tried to make a joke, you'd think there would be some kind of exchange. Nothing. Definitely got the "order your drink and GTFO" vibe. I thought maybe I was misreading the vibe but my friends agreed they felt the same way. GTFO is exactly what I wanted to do as I did not feel welcome. I also didn't love what I got. I got a ginger flavored beer alternative something and it was very sweet like drinking straight up soda. I don't go to breweries often but when I do, this place isn't gonna be on my list. The service and drink left a sour taste in my mouth (literally) and with all the breweries in Charlotte, there are plenty more to choose from.

Yelp
Best part of my Charlotte trip visiting family. What a surprise. Beer release weekend, great food truck, awesome selection of beers, great branding, etc. the list goes on. Walked in and immediately playing all my favorite music like Aesop Rock, Hail Mary Mallon, etc. Oh... wrestling. "Real" wrestling. So much fun we had to stay for that as well. Bought some glassware and beers to take back to seattle but I wish they sold that yellow hat I saw one of the staff wearing.
google avatar

Kecia M.

Yelp
Great brewery! Fantastic selection of brews! Also great food truck. Love this place. Plenty of seating, inside and out. Definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Super sweet management! People were really obnoxious during the egg hunt and she tried her best. We'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Tyler M.

Yelp
If you love New England style IPAs like I do then you have to check out this place. They have a good variety of styles but specialize in ipa. Both NEIPAs I had were really good and I liked that they have a fridge inside with single cans available to-go. You can also buy 4 packs but I like the singles just to try as many as I can.
google avatar

Kenny R.

Yelp
Some of the best beers Charlotte has to offer, especially if you are into IPA's. Cool vibes and sometimes great food make it one of, if not my favorite brewery in town. Great beer, great food(depending on the day) and chill vibes, what else can you ask for? Parking can be a little bit of an issue, but the lot around the corner always seems to have some open spots. My go to night has been Monday's for the Cheats Philly Cheesesteaks, but I'm not sure if that will be a thing going forward now that they are building a brick and mortar spot. The dumpling lady currently has a food truck there and she is amazing too! As per the beers, there is always some fresh juicy or hazy IPA for me to try. "Lightning Drops" has been my default, but I'm always open to try something new. I'll be back and back again.

Yelp
Fancy seeing you around these parts Resident Culture. I'm happy to say Resident Culture has expanded to south end! The ambiance and overall vibes was great. Resident culture is one of my personal favorites among the large brewery scene in the Queen City. I'm not a fan of how they were handling the tables personally. They have a QR code that you scan and you do all of your ordering online. The website isn't user friendly and requires more information than what's required. The music was a bit loud as well. *drumroll please* the carnitas Bruto is making my mouth water as I write this. The tortilla is out of this world. The perfect combination of greatness. Don't take my word for it, you've gotta get one yourself.
google avatar

Richard Arnez J.

Yelp
Yard Ripper, the seltzers they make are make are my FAVE. Super tight. The art for all their cans is really cool too. Sometimes they have shows and markets in their barrel room. Its eclectic.
google avatar

Juniper M.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere. Kid and dog friendly, various age groups too. Generous seating. Umbrellas on tables and tables under a tent as well as tables on porch. I have been here several times, never disappointed in the beer. Food trucks are good. However not every time is there a decent vegetarian option, but I really go there for the beer.... I do have on negative. The ladies room. It is normally a mess however this past Friday... it was beyond gross. It smelled like a decaying body was hidden somewhere. Seriously have some one empty the trash throughout the evening...please...
google avatar

Krystle M.

Yelp
Resident Culture is in a nice location on central but when they have the food truck Friday event parking is crazy limited. The atmosphere is nice. On this visit there was live music and it was kinda noisy. There was lots of sitting space and even a birthday party going on. As I expand my beer pallet I tried several of the ciders they had on tap. None of them did anything for me and I was left with one option the Ginger beer from Ginger Revenge in Asheville. There were two choices but I decided on the Lime Agave Ginger Beer. This choice didn't disappoint. I was very happy. Resident Culture 2101 Central Ave Charlotte, NC 28205

Yelp
Well I'll make it short and simple. Was super excited to try this place because I almost hosted my husbands 40th birthday here. Well I'm so glad I didn't.... What awful customer service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Walked up to the bar to order our very first beer; What can I get you? We never been here before... Silence We like IPAS Well there's 4..... Silence Can we sample them?... Got a major attitude than responded you can just get a flight.... Well we didn't want a flight we go to Breweries all the time and always sample and get what we like! Oh yeah..Than excited to check into this place on Yelp, saw we receive a Free Sticker! We live stickers for our coolers and water bottles... Response: we don't have any... This all being said 1st and last time! BTW THEY WERE NOT BUSY!!!!!
google avatar

Sheri S.

Yelp
Actually found this to be my very favorite place for a visit in North Carolina! Is very clean, lots of room for friends and family, many beers on tap and outside seating as well. The variety is great and they have great swag! Check this one out!
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
Drove two hours from Pinehurst to visit because I enjoy their beer. Arrive to about eight people in the brewery who have previously been served. They were almost out of every IPA and the server wouldn't pour us a beer flight because he was "too busy". After we got our single beers and he served about five other people, the server then proceeds to water all of the plants within the brewery and leave the bar unattended for about 30 minutes. We left and vouched that we couldn't come back, as much as we enjoy their beer.

Mitch R.

Yelp
Great time there today! Beer line up was excellent. If you love hoppy and hazys please go there. Ask for Sydney, she is awesome!
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
Resident Culture was a really fun brewery to try! Their beers are creative and made with lots of love! I've had two pilsners from Resident Culture, the Pajama Party which was a very hoppy but refreshing pilsner and the collaboration pilsner done with Modern Times brewing, the Modern Rhymes which was a very tasty pilsner. I've had Modern Times beers in the past and really enjoyed them and knew I'd enjoy this one as well! I also had a great double IPA the Vicky Virago which was very enjoyable as well! Resident Culture is a great brewery and I look forward to trying more of their beers in the future!

Yelp
This place gets definite props for cool vibes and aesthetics. The space is amazingly open and well-purposed with a very contemporary industry-chic vibe and some awesome art. There's a nice communal seating patio and a long bar that is easy to walk up to to order and some sections to sit at. They didn't have as many beers as I'd hoped they would, but as it was my first time and finding out that they are relatively new (just about to celebrate their 1yr anniversary) I can definitely understand. I got a flight of 4 tasters and the bartender was super helpful in explaining their offerings and helping me choose based on my particular beer tastes. For the name alone, I had to try the Two-Horned Unicorn, but was actually underwhelmed by it and the other 3 beers I sampled. They do seem to offer a more IPA & Sour/Saison centric menu than I am particularly fond of, which is probably why nothing seemed to really entice me or blow me away. I think I might try them again in a few months once they've rotated some stuff out from summer to the cooler months and see if I can find some beers more compatible with my palate. Otherwise, loved the space, loved the ambiance, and the lone staff member I interacted with was super friendly.

Yelp
I visited three breweries this day and this was by far my favorite! There is a private parking lot and a short walk overflow parking lot. There is indoor and outdoor seating and dogs are welcome but only outside! There a few TV's if you are dying to watch the game or golf . Food trucks are available should you get the munchies. Lots of great tasting beers such as the mild IPA "Boot juicin" and the "The two horned unicorn".. plus they have a couple of sours and wine. There is plenty of room here to move about even when it looks busy on the patio. The only "downside" is that the bar and certain tables are very tall -- such that when you sit on the stool you will feel short --- now for me being taller I was fine but the majority of people may feel off or awkward. There are picnic tables to sit low and normal.( Apparently the owner is over 6'5") Go check it out ! I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Met some friends here on a Friday night when the weather was nice. It seems like a popular family hangout spot. Lots of kids running around added to the fun energetic atmosphere. There were 5 or 6 food trucks in the lot with a good variety of options (Mexican food, dumplings, lobster rolls, popsicles, etc.). It got a little chilly when the sun went down but they had heat lamps between the picnic tables outside to fend off the cold. I'm not a big beer drinker (why did I choose to move to Charlotte then you wonder?) so luckily for me they have wine by the glass and the bottle!
google avatar

Samantha T.

Yelp
A refurbished factory full of delights is Resident Culture Brewing, a rustic haven. Resident Culture Brewing is a hidden gem of Charlotte. With their creative and comically-named delicious beer and their live Dj, this brewery is sure coming up in the Charlotte brewery scene and finding its niche. The brewery offers a wide variety list with varying styles and strengths so that every kind of beer drinker gets what they want. Why not sample some of their in house brewed beers before selecting. Of course, we got to sample a few different beers and wines too! The baristas were always friendly, awesome, kind, and the brewers know their stuff! The atmosphere is very laid back and mellow, it is definitely a great place to hang out with friends.
google avatar

Trekforbeer B.

Yelp
Great beer and amazing atmosphere. The top brewery in CLT.
google avatar

Taryn R.

Yelp
As someone who doesn't love IPAs, I do occasionally struggle to find my drink of choice at Resident Culture. I found a Pilsner that was drinkable but they ran out of it. (Apparently, there are lots of non-IPA drinkers out there sucking them dry.) They recently released a porter that is tasty so long as it's chilly outside. I'm a seasonal beer drinker, what can I say? Even if it is October, I just can't bring myself to drink a dark beer when it's 90-degrees outside. When all else fails, they have a fantastic wine list curated by Good Food. I love Good Food and I love wine. I especially love prosecco, which they offer. So, wins all around! They have a great, dog friendly patio and almost always have a good food truck on site. Three big TVs mounted on all sides of the tap room make it a great spot to watch a game.
google avatar

Ishita K.

Yelp
Great selection of beer and cocktails. This place is great to hang out with friends and has great vibe. The location is great too. Would try out their food next time. We were here at St.Patricks day and the DJ was amazing. Really enjoyed our time.
google avatar

Yelp
I love they layout of this brewery. Excellent outdoor seating on the porch under heat lamps, or in the lower picnic garden with fire pits. Inside is the main hall with a long bar where several bartenders await your order, or there's the barrel room off to the side. The main hall regularly hosts live music in the corner. The beer selection is vast and the seating is ample. Just don't be shy, as many tables are communal. They are very pup friendly as well. They offer vegan food truck options every Monday for their "Meatless Monday," and they have traditional trucks every Friday for "Food Truck Friday." Parking is the only downside. The lot is very small and is used to host the food trucks on their designated nights. There is street parking within a block or two, and the location is very walkable for anyone in the Plaza Midwood area, but if you're planning to knock a few back, I'd suggest a ride share anyhow.

Yelp
We drove over for their Lunar New Year Event and it was awesome. The had The Dumpling Lady Food Truck there as well. The place is big, they have indoor and patio seating (with heaters) as well as a yard area. If you take your fur kid it has to be leashed (so many adorable pups everywhere). They have a parking lot plus overflow right down the street. Both were packed but we were able to find street parking close by. As a side note, I don't drink beer or soda so I was really happy that there was a Dunkin' Donuts close by for coffee. (I swear I am going to start bringing a keurig or electric kettle with me to breweries.). I digress, hubby had the Baltic Porter and really liked it. Apparently you can reserve tables ahead of time and it looked like several birthday parties were booked. The only thing that made this miss 5 stars, and it could have been because of the event, was the that there were so many unsupervised kids. It might be because I have a condition that makes me already a little physically unstable/challenged but having kids run into me makes me nervous. A few almost ran into the outdoor heaters, I saw a few grabbing at dogs without asking and the parents couldn't be bothered. I can't blame the brewery but it is a concern. We will definitely go back and try again when it isn't so crowded
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
I had heard really good things about this brewery, but just recently visited for the first time for food truck Friday. We got there early so we didn't have to deal with long food truck lines. The brewery is really big and the space is nice. There is tons of seating and a nice outdoor patio as well. My husband was very impressed with the number of IPA options available. The noise level was also reasonable even when it was crowded which is hard to find these days. We could actually hear each other talk. They have parking available which is always a plus and during food truck Friday there was even an overflow lot to park in.
google avatar

Lori L.

Yelp
Very cool brewery and friendly staff. Plenty of parking so you don't have to worry about that. They do also have food trucks depending on what time you come. There are plenty of tables inside and outside and a lot of TVs inside. My husband got a couple of beers and he liked all of them and he thought that it was a really cool and chill place. We stayed here for a few hours and watch the game and had a fun time. This place is also dog friendly!

Angela B.

Yelp
This was one of our favorite stops on our Charlotte Brewery Tour. This place is really big - lots of outdoor seating. The place was packed, so I can't really say how much indoor seating there was. We definitely could not find any place to sit. They had two private parties happening and it was a Saturday, so it was just busy. Lots of little kids and lots of dogs = very loud. The beer was good. They were missing stouts though. We visited in November, so I was expecting to see a few stouts. They had a big selection of IPAs though, so the hubby was happy. No food at the brewery but there was a taco truck outside. I would definitely like to go back but would choose a less busy day to go so that I could relax and enjoy.

Daniel B. B.

Yelp
If you're a fan of sours and IPAs, go here. Don't wait, just do it. We recently went to Resident Culture for the first time since before the pandemic and had a great time! All of the beers we had were top-notch. The service was fast and friendly. Patio area had a great vibe too.
google avatar

Yelp
We went to Resident Culture in Southend last night and it was a great experience! We actually sat in the back half of the place so we could have some dinner. I opted for the Island Time Beer which was a mexican lager and my friend got an IPA. We really loved them. We ordered the guacamole and chips to start and it was yummy! I got a carnitas taco and a steak taco dilla (1/2 taco, 1/2 quesadilla) and they were both delicious! I didn't love that the ordering process was completely through the QR code on the table. There is no waiter assigned to you, so it was a bit hard to get refills of water and check on our food. Our tacos came out quickly but or taco dillas didn't. We had to eventually stop someone that worked there to ask if they could check on them for us. The manager came over, apologized, and comped them from our bill even though they did eventually make it us. It was a really nice experience overall and I will definitely be back!

Yelp
We stopped by on a Friday night to enjoy a few beers and the live DJ. This is a great place to wind down from a long work week. On Fridays they have food trucks outside and you can order food and bring into their establishment. They also have a large heated patio outside.
