How a Brand New Restaurant Is Surviving Lockdown | Eater

"The wholesale supplier was a daily lifeline for supplies and containers at the start, providing a comforting routine of early‑morning runs, but stock became increasingly unreliable as shelves emptied and employees could no longer predict restocking schedules. That unpredictability forced bulk hoarding drives, added logistical strain (including renting vehicles to transport goods), and heightened concern that without suitable to‑go containers the kitchen won’t be able to continue safe takeout and delivery service." - Amanda Kludt

TRUCKERS: You can park overnight in the street in front of the customer parking lot. I highly recommend walking over to the loading dock area to check in. Your best bet is to pull in and make a u-turn for a blind side if you are going into door number four. Jackknife might be the best solution if you are going into door number one. I had no issues with the employees and staff. No issues checking in. As soon as I got a door I started getting unloaded. Coming out of the facility might be a little tough if you are in door number one. Overall a pretty good experience. I give it five stars if there was a little more room to back up to the docks.

About a week ago, I purchased 3 cases of avocados and stored them in a shaded storage area. After a full week, they were still unusable. I tried to return or exchange all 3 cases, but the manager simply told me, without any customer service or explanation, that returns must be made within 3 days—and then walked away. If the avocados are still not ripe or usable after a week, isn’t that a problem with the product you sold, not my handling? As a result, I ended up wasting $150 and had to purchase another 3 cases. I also asked how you would handle it if the new avocados turn out the same, but I was ignored and no one would even talk to me. Hey manager, if you’re going to do your job, do it right. This kind of customer service is exactly why your reviews are so bad. Have you ever even worked on the floor? Probably not. Even the checkout process used to be faster when we just lined up in a single queue and went to the next available cashier. But you changed it—what do you even know? Because of that, I’m standing here waiting over 30 minutes just to check out today. Isn’t this exactly why Restaurant Depot reviews are always so terrible?

I bought a box of Halal chicken leg quarters, took it home, and opened it to find that it smelled very, very bad. I called customer service about it, and they were very rude. The customer service rep, Cristal, was especially rude. I’m attaching a copy of the bill so you can see what’s going on here. 👎👎👎

My parents own a restaurant, unfortunately this place is their frequent food supply. People in here are very rude generally but this review is about the manager that my mother had to encounter the other day. The cashier probably didn't know what they were doing but blamed my mom's debit card which had her swipe the card twice, hence charged twice. The cashier had my mother talk to the manager in his office, and when my mom brought up a large amount of money being charged twice, he gog real upset and told my mother to "get out" very angrily. My mother is a hard working restaurant owner who speaks a little English. Even if she were to expressed distress, because it sucka to be charged twice for their employees incompetency, when waa it right to yell at customer? I will be reaching out to owner/higher up than that manager who doesnt know how to treat customer.

Hey guys! My family and I went to a Restaurant Depot in Austin, TX. Upon checking out our foods. This black and tall woman who had fake braids asked if we happened to find the box opened or did we open it ourselves? We responded it was already opened because a lot of Restaurant Depot food boxes had already previously been opened. Then she goes further by commenting that we might have stuffed something in the box. As in why would we do that. Doesn't she know God Almighty who sees us will judge us all for the good and bad stuff that we do while we're alive on earth. And then she goes further to cuss in front of the customers, like come on. Like if you're having a terrible day at your job which you applied for because you need the money do a good job and cut the attitude. My family members didn't tell you to apply for such a job. She couldn't even pronounce lomen like what in the world. She was rude and absolutely arrogant for no reason. Please Restaurant Depot train your employees better. There are hard workers out there who are always looking for a better job to better their lives.

Google
Gave them 2 stars because it’s cheap. Quality usually bad. Products are inconsistent. Shredded carrots were on the shell for 2 weeks even they were rotten. Went there 3 days in a row during weekdays to buy cucumber and they had none despite they get their produce every day during weekdays (or that’s what they said.) There was a time that they didn’t have any kind of chicken thigh in store. I only speak my experience for this location only FYI. I wouldn’t come here if I have another option in town Edit my review after 2 weeks: Reduce them to 1 star. They left rotten spring mix on the shelf for sell. See picture below

Yet again, I had a frustrating experience with a cashier named Neena, a middle-aged lady, at Restaurant Depot in Austin. She told me to open a carton of vinegar that was underneath a bag of rice, which meant I had to move the rice first. I understand that sometimes barcodes on the outside of boxes don’t scan, requiring a check on an item inside—but that’s the cashier’s job, not mine. What made it worse was her attitude. She spoke to me as if I were her employee rather than a paying customer. To top it off, she didn’t even apologize. Instead, as I was leaving after paying, she mockingly kept saying, “Thank you, thank you,” which only made the whole situation more unpleasant. Honestly, after six years of shopping here, I feel like nothing ever changes. I’ve put off writing a review for a long time, but after today’s experience, I can’t stay silent anymore.

BESMELLAH MOHAMMADI

Google
Warning! Be very aware when buying, sometimes it scans the same item twice, I had bought a BF STk seed, but I charged twice, and visited twice. And I received no response. And still one day he took a wrong item, he made me wait for three hours to return it, the department manager didn't come to sign, one of my worst experience

Yelp
I can't tell you how many times should I come into the store but I can tell you that each visit is a success. Today we came in for a exchange! We was moving to fast and got the wrong package of sausage. Went right to the front and did an exchange. Last, the store is normally clean and organized. I love seeing the workers stock the floor. Special shout to the front desk Ms Bonnie- your a jewel. To Jay for always managing the flow on the sales floor and helping us find items on the floor and to the cashiers that are always working hard to make sure the count is correct, THANK YOU

Michael C.

Yelp
This is the worst run store in the chain. I hate coming here. While the staff not management is great. The GM sits on his ass while the lines are ridiculous. If you can get cashiers pay them more so you can retain. We as business owners have restaurants to run. Standing in lines for what seems to be hours is bullshit. Fix it it's been long before Covid. Fire the GM and get someone who knows how to run a business. Isles are clogged. Freezers u can't move in. Product not on the shelves because it's stacked I. The isles. OMG I would give them no stars if I could. And that is directed directly at the management

Yelp
Management here is extremely unprofessional, especially dale and Johnathan. They like to make inappropriate comments about the female workers amongst each other in the presence of other workers. Please beware of working here, they will retaliate against you for speaking out about these matters as well and try to say you stole something to fire you to keep from taking accountability for their actions. And beware of the quality of some of their items. If a customer happens to leave a dairy product out of refrigeration because they change their mind, even if it's been 4+ hours, dale will put it back on the shelf as if it's not bad and out of the temperature safe zone creating unsafe amounts of bacteria. And some items are over priced and can be found much cheaper at Sam's or Costco. The lines are also horrendous and they talk crazy to their customers who are waiting in line especially nena. Take caution when either shopping or working here.

Sheila K.

Yelp
Hello my name is Sheila and I was visiting threw the holiday and was looking for some Gouda cheese and I ask a gentleman in the sea food department named John and handed to me and asked if I needed anything else and I also asked him for some beef in which he was very knowledgeable about it and proceeded to show me a beef tenderloin and went as far as to tell me how to cut the portions... He was a pleasure to talk with and a great service to your store. Thank you and God Bless you, Sheila King

Yelp
So today was my first time in the store and I activated my membership card this morning. The guy at the front desk was very nice and helpful getting me thru the process quickly. If I had enough storage space I probably would have purchased more items today but I did leave with a nice deal on white chocolate chips and vanilla extract in bulk. There were some things that I didn't think the prices were low enough and that Walmart was a better option for me. The check out line was very quick and I was able to get in and out pretty easily.
google avatar

Erika B.

Yelp
Don't love this place. They're always changing their prices, and honestly it's expensive. I've been able to find better deals at H-E-B, Costco and Sam's. It's also very dirty all the time.

Yelp
Took the day off to explore a restaurant depot in Central Austin. A nice discovery to shop for items that you would see in restaurants in a Costco manner. Items are stored on shelves stories tall. Everything is laid out in nice order and you can usually find things very fast here. In the front entrance, you have to sign in with your drivers license or membership ID. Their baskets are a little different to pull around in the isles so you can load them from left to right and bottom to top. It just makes things easier. I've been here before and knew to bring a sweater. He gets very cold in the deep freezer. In the freezer, you'll see shelves of deli meats, and hanging goats and freezers with cakes and cheese. there are also containers with crabs and lobsters and fish... Everything that you can imagine they have on hand. If you can't find it, the management is. Helpful in finding what need. our mission here was just to buy a 20 pound side of beef and cut them up in the steaks when we get home. Not a bad deal! We purchased 18 pounds of sirloin steak for $188. For that price we will have steak for the whole year and save about $50 in the long run if not more. it wasn't busy around the time we left 3 o'clock on a Friday afternoon. If you plan on going over the weekend, I suggest having one person with the cart in line and the other one shopping on the go. The checkout lines get pretty long and you can wait up to about an hour or hour and a half to get out of the building. For those who like to cook at home this is the place to go get good quality food at a reasonable price.

Yelp
I really love restaurant depot. I occasionally do catering jobs and the depot is able to handle all of my needs. The prices are great and they always restock quickly if they are sold out. I'm a huge fan of the seafood dept. They have the best crawfish in town. They also have amazing deals on oysters. I see several reviews with complaints about the service. I don't like the sound of any of that but I have never personally witnessed the staff here be anything but helpful and kind. I would give the employees here five stars from my personal experiences. If you need to buy a substantial amount of something or get catering goods I would for sure recommend Restaurant Depot.

Yelp
Overall, being in the restaurant business, this offers good bulk assortment of fish, beef, pork, lamb, and other frozen items. The store has bulk dried and canned items. All okay, but the check out experience can be slow and inaccurate. Supply can be inconsistent at times and never has been the same since the pandemic.

D D.

Yelp
Complete chaos at the resister. Multiple lines, no order or control. Every person for themselves at checkout. Have seen fights nearly break out. Management does nothing and does not care. Cashier near the bread will yell at you if your cart isn't stacked perfectly to their specifications. Frequently have to search the parking lot for a cart, half the carts are missing a top shelf. Cashiers change every month. Poorly run with no apologies. If there were another option for restaurant wholesale, these jokers would be run out of business.

Yelp
I usually went to Restaurant Depot in San Antonio. They were okay in San Antonio. However, I bought a restaurant in Austin so I had to go shopping in Austin Restaurant Depot. I didn't like this location at all. The workers are rude and they don't have customer service at all. They also have a bad time managing their employees. They stacked 70 lb meat on the second shelf which was almost 5' of the ground and when I asked an guy employee to help me move the cart, he looked at me like I was lazy. I was telling him because it's too heavy for me and it will be easier for him to lift it up. He was telling me that I was being prejudiced. I didn't argue with him but it's a common knowledge that a man was born stronger than a woman. There are other incidents. I have to keep shopping because it's too far away for me to shop at Austin, but the management needs to do something with this store.

Yelp
Great prices for what you're getting. Nothing too complicated about it. Workers aren't exactly friendly but I could care less, this isn't supposed to be a normal grocery store.

Gabi P.

Yelp
Customer service is not effective. While everyone had the right idea in mind, any time I called I was sent to someone else, and of all the emails I sent with one question, I haven't heard back in over a week. If no one can answer a question, don't ignore people, answer and be honest. There's nothing more frustrating to me than jumping through hoops to try to get help, and not getting anything back.
google avatar

Juan C.

Yelp
I Don't get all the micro managing in this place they have to count everything twice. The cashier and another person also counts you items before you leave. Seem like they hire all the hoodrats and make them cashiers. Check out is very slow every single time. Even if you have less than 10 items.

Paul C.

Yelp
This store is about the worst place to deal with. The employee I spoke with is about the most arrogant individual I have ever dealt with at a place of business. He might as well have said bye Felicia all 3 times I called hoping to get a different employee. You may find items cheaper there, but I will not help a business with employee attitudes like this stay in business , only to treat other customers the way I was treated.

Amy H.

Yelp
I always find a good deal at Restaurant Depot. John in the meat department is especially helpful and knowledgeable. He knows what's on sale and helps me load and unload my purchases. John is a gem of an employee. I wish the other departments had someone as helpful as him.

Yelp
I have been both an employee and a customer at Restaurant depot Austin. I have been dealing with this company since 2015. Although there are very good things about this place like the prices and the few employees that do take pride in their work and customers. But honestly I would recommend SEVERAL places before I would recommend Restaurant depot. The management is severely flawed from top to bottom. Everyone needs to be retrained on PROPER customer service and the building needs to be seriously inspected, cleaned and reorganized. The way the store manager Dale Conducts business with his customers, potential customers and employees is very unprofessional at times and deters many people (not just me) away from the RD environment. I have heard so many complaints similar to mine over the years and at this point it is ridiculous. I have been to many other locations in Texas and Austin has to be the worst. Restaurant Depot Austin has the potential to be a great place, and its success COULD be unlimited but its cut short by a broken link in the chain. How long until someone replaces that link? I do want to give props to the other employees that I know do such a great job and make the experience for both customers and employees a lot better. Brian, Jonathan, and Claudia are in top management positions and they are the backbone of this location. If it were not for them, I would not have dealt with Restaurant depot Austin for as long as I did so I would like to thank them a thousand times. It's not a horrible place, it just needs a LOT of overdue improvement that's more than just a quick fix.

As Nhu A.

Yelp
This place has better prices than some other places, but it's not the only wholesale place. Any kinds of businesses couldn't be successful with bad customer service. I think everyone who come here at least they are managers or business owners, they should be treated better than that. I was a witness of how the female cashier treated the customers. The way cashier talked is very rude and unprofessional.

58 L.

Yelp
I came here not long ago and yeison attended me with great service and he just started working here!
google avatar

Nickie B.

Yelp
This store never disappoints me. I frequent this place for small ware, plastic gloves and catering supplies. Although they have a large cooler with fruits, vegetables, frozen items, meats, fish, etc, I rarely purchase food items here. Tip: SUPER duper prices on cookie sheets, tongs and pizza pans!

Maria L.

Yelp
I only come for restaurant depot for the prices and things I need but the costumer service was AWFUL the lady was rude another cashier was next to us and was yelling at the poor man when he asked a question over the cases! Restaurant Depot needs more professional and better costumer service this place sucks!

Robbie H.

Yelp
I was in RD for an items that i could not get it online (out of stock). My wife and I were in the cup and lid section. The isle was very busy and found a driver on folk lift (still running the folk lift back and forth without the isle block off) and a stock person. I asked the stock person for the 16oz cup/lid. He kindly point me to those items, and then the driver jump in (identify he is the manager "Jose M."). His attitude toward customer "we are the trouble maker". We did not do anything wrong, did not open the box, and calmly listen to his attitude. He said he work 16 hours a day so he could not keep his anger down and have to vent to his customers. It is not my fault he is working so hard, it is not my fault that he should sit in the office and hire enough workers. And Jose M., we are the one who is paying your salary, so don't get your frustration on US. And by the way, the OSHA required you to block off the isle while the folk lift is in action, do you know this.

Nate G.

Yelp
Ever since they opened there doors open to the public for "COVId" they have nothing in stock... and I'm trying to run a business they need to get there shit together and stop letting the other people in and wasting my time our just shut down

Yelp
The prices are high, there is mission supply that has better prices. The manger Andy allows returns on his whims. I purchased a hand blender and when I tried to return it the lady at the front opened it examined it and said no problem. But she needs a mangers signature, my luck it was Andy on call. I had previously been walking through the he store and saw a person trying to return an item that still had onions on it . The guy had not even cleaned it. Andy returned it, but my hand blender still in the box and the previous employee said no problem was in returnable because it was used. My question is how are you supposed to know if something works without using it? And why was the other item the man was returning with onions still on it okay. As long as there is equal treatment it's fine . But obviously the return policy depends on Andy's mood that day or maybe racism because I am obviously a Muslim women.

Yelp
My father bought a fryer from them connected it and didn't turn on called restaurant depot they said they can't do anything they just sell the product, to call the manufacturer, he bought it directly from your store we asked if we can get a refund the Santes the appliance "untouched" brand new just like we bought it we told them the wrapping it's gone and box they said then there's nothing we can do we ask just refund us take it to the manufacturer you guys got it from but no they want us to deal with the problem! Worst place to buy appliances! Make sure to know if they have some type of warranty and what includes. $1000 piece of equipment that just sitting in my father's kitchen not working!

Rahil S.

Yelp
You guys need a self checkout for small orders. Waiting in line behind someone with a $600 order and they're paying with a check? And the cashier loses track and has to start the transaction over, again. Ugh
google avatar

CJ B.

Yelp
They always have what I need and prices are great! The checkers are quick and efficient! Thanks for the hard work guys!
google avatar

Hannah P.

Yelp
Make sure to check all items before checking out!!! Many boxes are labeled wrong and items inside the box are not what they are. They do not allow refunds or exchanges within 72 hours of purchase. Being we have to buy in bulk due to supply and demand, we do not check until we use the item... completely lost a lot of money!!!

MIke M.

Yelp
If you want to buy in a business that is careless, with 0 customer service , employees that believe the own the place. Come here. Be prepare to spend 1 hour to get in and another hour in a line to pay Otherwise do yourself a favor a buy somewhere else .
google avatar

James D.

Yelp
Manager think he is a fighter, what the heck is wrong with him, I am twice his size and he bucked up to me.
google avatar

Mike V.

Yelp
Wow! The selection at this place is amazing! The refrigerated section itself is awesome! Fresh vegetables, meats, sauces, dressings, cheese, OH MY.... and even a whole goat or lamb if your heart desires. The pricing is good too. If you need anything for a restaurant, they should have it here!
google avatar

Ed C.

Yelp
Only because I buy in bulk I shop there. If they would hire decent people and not hood rats the lines would go faster and they wouldn't have to be checked on all the time. Plus somebody needs to go thru all items and enter them in the system. Asking for a key every couple of items is ridiculous.
google avatar

Seyid E.

Yelp
This morning we bought a bunch of stuff. In the afternoon I came back only for one them. Only thing they've to do is pay back and they told me that I have to wait on the line. It takes a lot of time and I have to pick my kidos up.

James J.

Yelp
Disorganized, always waiting on staff to move a forklift or have entire aisles blocked so they can stock. Well today took the cake, an employee named Steve cussed me out in front by the check out. I went to find a supervisor only to be told that we will leave it how it is. All the while this Steve guy is steadily cussing me out and calling me names. I have tried several times to contact the store manager only to be told he is unavailable. I have tried the corporate office with no call back. This is a terrible place and I will not be coming back.

De J L.

Yelp
As a small business owner, I depend on Restaurant Depot for a lot of items. After reading several reviews I felt compelled to share my own experience dealing with RD and their employees. First of all, NO ONE deserves to be referred to as a "hood rat." People are still people, even when they are different from you. I visit RD at least twice every month. No, I don't always get what I need and Yes, sometimes I have to endure long wait times to check out just like everybody else does. But, I ALWAYS get outstanding customer service from everyone I encounter. I don't agree with employees being argumentative or combative with any customer. But I also don't agree with any customer feeling entitled to do the same either. We're all under a great deal of stress. Give respect to receive respect is my motto. I pray more people try it and offer a little more grace to people just trying to make a living in a system they most likely have had very little ability to impact or change.

Yelp
Move over Sysco..This is where the pros go, if they want to save. This is like a Sam's Club for the chef, caterer or restaurant owner because it's all about food here, and lots of it, in big quantities. You have to own a food business to get in, but once you get in, you'll be wowed. Old school days meant Sysco or a food service company taking your orders for the items needed for production and dropping it off to you. No more. Because that delivery costs you and if you don't negotiate your prices with a company like that, that will cost you too. Here it's just big savings and aisles of items. And if they don't have it and you use it in your production often, they'll get it for you. The cashiers and employees are a breath of fresh air when you feel stressed and in a rush. For example, yesterday I was having my items rung up, the cashier pointed to the gentleman leaving and asked "He owns Lucky's. Have you ever heard of Lucky"s? Oh, it's awesome." He then began telling me about how the guy makes his dough for his sandwiches daily and then cooks them to order on a wood fired oven and I remembered seeing an episode on the Food Network where they featured him. The cashier went on to tell me about the different things he had personally eaten there. This is not unusual as they do get to know your business very well and are happy to talk about it and chat with others. They know the products in my own food line; they are friendly but never intrusive and certainly don't share what you make it from--just happy to tell others your stuff is made from scratch, for example. I've had many things ordered for me specifically and I have saved more money than you'd believe here by picking the items up myself and not having to negotiate. They even have restaurant equipment and staples like bulk silverware or chafing dish butane or popcorn poppers or "Open" signs. Not all items have to be bought in bulk. I can buy a 10 pack of uncooked tortillas, for example. Really nice prices on packaging too in bulk, like deli containers.
google avatar

Yelp
Love getting stuff for my coffee shop at Restaurant Depot. Extremely convenient now that we can email our order in... have it pulled for free... and pick it up and pay without waiting in line. Note: You must be a restaurant owner or manager (employee) to get in and you must scan in every time you show up. Something fun... the walk-in fridge the 4 times the size of the refrigerated section of HEB. Complimentary coats at the entrance.

Yelp
Great value for bulk purchasers - friendly helpful staff. Always well organized and super. Clean. It took some hauling on our part but made a significant difference to our button line. Jim in the freezer is one cool guy.

Yelp
I've been a long time customer here however in the last few months the service has greatly diminished! I come every other week and virtually every visit I have to wait prolonged periods of time for someone to get a forklift and drop product that isn't stocked. When you can stand next to a Manager waiting for them to help and they continue to stare into their computer screen then call another associate over to help with the same problem instead of dividing and helping both its just bad overall service! When the employees even tell you they know the service has gone down you know there is problems! Will be looking into other options!
google avatar

Yelp
While we certainly have opportunities to improve e.g. product in stock and staffing. Kyle K. wrote 4 hot checks in a row and was not truthful at all in the story posted here. Honest feedback good and bad are welcome as always.
google avatar

Sofía A.

Yelp
Can't really complain. They have great selection. I shop here weekly for my co-op and am able to get a decent amount of vegetarian/vegan items. They have kale, couscous, and chickpeas which is really nice! Whatever you can't find, the staff will try to help you find. Everyone is very friendly and the prices are great!
google avatar

Yelp
Great customer service. But checking out takes too long. Workers are super friendly but more register would make it better

Yelp
Compared to orlando's restaurant depot, this one doesn't staff enough people, causing lines to be overly long and are often out of stock of produce I depend on: arugula, basil, oregano

Grillmaster J.

Yelp
Aisles are always filled with product, it makes it hard to shop. Why don't they do this at night!!
google avatar

Jonathan F.

Yelp
Not a bad place if you are looking for regular everyday things, not a good specialty store. Good prices for restaurants.

Libby M.

Yelp
This place is amazing it has made my shopping so easy, not only has it cut down on my time but the cost is great, I would highly recommend Restaurant Depot to anyone. The staff is amazing at the Austin location, Jonathan,Martin, Cassandra ,Claudia, all are so helpful when I need something. They go out of there way to get it for me or let me know when it will come in. In general all there staff is great.Dale the manager has done a great job, I just met Brian and he is great as well he listens to his customers and takes time away from his busy schedule to listen. Yelp
This is a restauranteurs wonderland. You want it, they got it. The lack of 5 stars from me is the fact that they close at 4 on Saturdays and you usually have to wait in a substantial line
