"Youthful South African Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, who worked as a chef on private yachts in Monaco and as a photojournalist for a well-known magazine, has already lived several lives… In his cosy, romantic eatery near the port, he signs creative, personal cuisine in the form of a single set menu without choices (five or seven courses), in which he plays on sweet and sour combinations, and dabbles in smoky, spicy and acidic flavours, giving us an insight into South African cuisine, which has found favour with a host of visitors to the French Riviera. To celebrate his tenth anniversary, chef Jan opened a cheese bar opposite his restaurant serving twenty different cheeses, a range of beverages, preserves and dried fruit. Guests are encouraged to change venue for the cheese, which further adds to the original experience." - Michelin Inspector

This was, without a doubt, the best dining experience I’ve ever had. From the moment we arrived, every detail was flawless — the warm, attentive service, the beautifully curated ambience, and, most importantly, the food. Each course was a masterpiece, with flavour combinations and textures that surprised and delighted us throughout the evening. The presentation was impeccable, and the wine pairings elevated the dishes to another level. It’s clear that this is a kitchen where passion, precision, and creativity meet. Dining here is so much more than just a meal — it’s an experience, and one I’ll remember forever. Chef Jan and his team have created something truly world-class, and it made me incredibly proud to see a fellow South African making such an extraordinary mark in the culinary world. If you have the opportunity to dine here, don’t hesitate — it’s exceptional in every possible way.

Dining at JAN in Nice was an extraordinary culinary experience — one of those rare meals that lingers in your memory long after the final bite. From the moment we stepped through the door, we were enveloped in a warm, intimate atmosphere that felt more like a private dinner party than a restaurant. The service was flawless: gracious, attentive, and deeply knowledgeable without ever being pretentious. Each course was introduced with context and care, making us feel not just like diners, but like welcome guests on a journey through South African and French flavors. As for the food — every dish was a work of art, both visually and in flavor. Chef Jan Hendrik’s heritage shone through in imaginative pairings that balanced sophistication with soul. The tasting menu flowed seamlessly from one course to the next, with each plate more surprising and delightful than the last. Standouts included the signature biltong-inspired amuse-bouche and a dessert course that was as playful as it was precise. The wine pairings were spot-on — each glass elevating the dishes it accompanied without overshadowing them. And the optional visit to Maria, the private cheese room across the street, was a beautiful bonus — a rustic-chic contrast to the refined dining room, and a sensory highlight of the evening. In short, JAN is a triumph — not just of technical excellence, but of heart, hospitality, and storytelling through food. A must-visit for anyone serious about dining in the French Riviera.

When you have an opportunity to sit down and have a Michelin star chef cook for you… you don’t turn down the chance. Food was creative and presented as you’d expect. Service was brilliant and the ambiance was romantic and tasteful. Cocktails blew me away. I will be coming back again. Recommend if you have someone special you want to impress but don’t want to break the bank.

Google
Truly a one of a kind dining experience. The staff was absolutely lovely and very attentive. A quaint dining room leads to an intimate dining ambiance. The cheese course was an unbelievable experience everyone should have in their life. The chefs left nothing out of the meal -caviar, foie gras, seafood, steak etc. The wines paired perfectly with each course. Definitely would go again!

Google
Michelin star restaurants can be too much of a show and not enough food. Not JAN. Wonderful hosts, servers and friendly atmosphere. And with surprise visit to Maria for cheese we had more than enough to eat. Could not have gone better

Google
France is home to many incredible Michelin-starred restaurants, so during my trip to the South of France, I booked two—one of them being Restaurant JAN, which had an impressive 4.8 rating on Google. I had high expectations. I made a reservation in advance and specifically noted that one of my friends is a vegetarian. To ensure they were prepared, I also sent an email before our visit confirming the availability of a vegetarian menu. However, when we arrived, there was no warm welcome—no acknowledgment of our dietary request, and no mention of a vegetarian menu. My friend was initially handed the standard menu, leaving us confused and uncertain. One of the most bizarre parts of the experience was the "butter" served at the table. It remained there throughout the meal, slowly melting away—its nose, head, and other features falling apart. It was unplesant to look at and felt unnecessary, especially since no one could realistically consume that much butter. It seemed like an odd choice and, frankly, wasteful. As for the meal itself, nothing particularly stood out. The flavors and presentation didn’t leave a lasting impression, making it an overall unmemorable dining experience. While the restaurant eventually accommodated my vegetarian friend, their approach was uninspired—all of the substitutions were replaced with artichoke. Using artichoke in one or two dishes is understandable, but having it in every course felt lazy and lacking in creativity. There are countless ways to craft thoughtful and exciting vegetarian dishes, and this lack of effort was disappointing. For a Michelin-starred restaurant, I expected far more in terms of hospitality, attention to detail, and culinary innovation. Unfortunately, Restaurant JAN did not live up to the hype, and I wouldn’t return.

Google
I cannot fault one thing, I’m trying hard and there’s nothing. The food is mind blowing but the service was my favorite, constant smiles, patience and attentiveness. The staff really are incredible. The decor is to die for and the details and phenomenal. As a South African I was proud.

We had a excellent dinner at JAN for our anniversary, the food, wine, service and ambiance is fantastic! The mix of French and South African is both interesting and delicious, and any restaurant with a dedicated cheese room is good fun.

Yelp
One of the best culinary experiences I've ever had. from the moment you walk in and see the space, you can tell this will be a special experience. The team was very flexible when we asked to shift our reservation by 30 minutes, the day before. We were welcomed by their lovely staff and the team. Everyone was so lovely and happily answered questions about the dishes and the restaurant . The time across the street at Maria was really a beautiful interlude and display. I could not believe that all the fruits on the table were real, and selected at the market nearby. I had a great seat, which allowed me a view of the kitchen, and I could not believe Jan was there himself. I was able to try two other one star Michelin restaurants while in Nice, and this place really blew both out of the water.

Yelp
We celebrated my husband's birthday at JAN and had the most amazing culinary experience. The food was outstanding and the service was impeccable. JAN offers French and South African inspired dishes. The wine list exceptional. We enjoyed walking across the street to the cheese room which added to our dining experience. JAN is a great restaurant for a romantic evening out or celebrating a special occassion.

Mark A.

Yelp
JAN gives one the opportunity to experience both French and South African influenced dishes. This is a great romantic atmosphere for those needing a venue like this, and the service matched very well throughout the experience. With being just off the Mediterranean most dishes are influenced by the sea which gave different tastes to enjoy. The South African influence was most appreciated as I had not experienced combinations like this before. What might be the star of the show is Maria, the cheese room you leave JAN to enjoy across the streets. There is cheese - lots of it - and no choice is wrong. JAN sets itself apart with this feature and provides a great break in the meal. JAN is worth the experience. It is on the higher end of the 1 star Michelin range but I left more than satisfied.

Dennis Q.

Yelp
The food was very good overall. As one of our courses, we were escorted across the street to a cheese shop. It was like a cheese buffet paired with different drinks/other foods. You can easily get full from this course depending how much cheese you eat. We got a free cookbook from the restaurant. Great experience

Lori G.

Yelp
The food is South African and very unique but also very nice. A very different experience. The restaurant is cozy and well decorated. The cheese course is served across the street at your leisure and it's an amazing experience. The servers are very attentive and helpful. I loved the bobotie and tried to recreate it at home. Lovely dish well presented.

Adrienne G.

Yelp
Celebrating our 9 yr anniversary at Jan could not have been a better choice. Confirming ahead of time they could accommodate a vegetarian tasting menu, we were treated to beauty for the eyes and stomach. Each dish was packed with flavor and ingenuity. Focusing on South African flavors with a French twist, we enjoyed mushrooms, lentils, coconut, curry and an abundance of vegetables The presentation of their Niçoise salad was amazing! We had a special vegetarian version that looked just like the meaty version being served at other tables. We received a wreath of veggies then a tall glass with a small lettuce and tomato floret. They then pour a smoky tomato broth over the floret to heat up the salad and then use these long tongs to place the floret into the wreath so we then get the delicious salad and tomato broth to drink.....and let's not forget the cheese room We're walked across the street to this room that has specially been setup with an entire cheese table of 20+ different cheeses, nuts, fruits, honey, jams, breads and cakes to pair. The setup was amazing and elegant and the cheeses were phenomenal I could definitely go on here but I will end with the super nice staff, very attentive service and we were presented with a signed Jan cookbook and morning biscuits to remember our visit. Best anniversary dinner! Total: 2 people 10 courses 1 champagne: 1 bottle 3.5 hours 460€ including tip

Danielle H.

Yelp
This was one of the greatest meals we have ever had. The cheese experience across the street was such a cool touch. Service was great. Lovely ambiance.

Yelp
Very innovative food, good service, but the taste just wasn't quite there. We consider ourselves foodies and have eaten at good restaurants all over the world, some with 3 or 2 Michelin stars, and we were disappointed by this place. It felt like they were trying to be innovative for the sake of it and the flavors didn't quite come together. Very surprised by the good reviews, as 2 of my other foodie friends also felt let down by their experiences here. For dessert, we were taken to a beautifully decorated room with a big table full of cheese and jam. It was quite the experience, but there was no explanation of what kind of cheese goes with what. I'd rather have a limited and more curated selection of cheese with the pairings picked out - which is what you pay a Michelin 2-star restaurant for.

David H.

Yelp
Absolutely loved the meal and experience here, we stopped in our last night in Nice and had an amazing meal. Service is very friendly and warm. As expected with a starred restaurant, glasses never go empty, courses are explained in detail and course timing here was perfect. Even the small details were great - the JAN seltzer water was delicious, and our aperitifs came with ice cubes with fruit frozen in them to compliment our specific drinks. We reserved the first seating, which unfortunately means we could not order the full tasting menu, but we didn't miss much and still left very full and happy. There was not a bad course for our meal, and in fact it was hard choosing a favorite. The meal started off strong with the amuse, the highlight of which was a truffle and pear tartlet with white truffle. Such a memorable single bite that excites you for what is to come. The next dish was a beautiful scallop and cucumber dish, rice and coconut foam topped with caviar. Beautiful flavors and textures throughout. Then came the frozen apple, cheese and warm veloute. Temperatures played off each other to make a wonderfully composed dish. The entree was a beef loin with a number of components on the dish - all were great including the jus. 1000% recommend the cheese course, it is unlike any other I've experienced. You walk across the street to the cheese room and create your own personalized board from about 15 different cheeses and accoutrements. And the dessert and Mignardises were also very strong and ended the meal on a high note. Loved our experience at JAN and would highly recommend this meal to anyone. A very strong meal that exceeds some experiences we've had for a fraction of the price.

Yelp
I definitely recommend this restaurant. We were fortunate to get a last minute reservation and were seated outside, but that didn't affect our experience. We both ordered the seven course meal. At first, they wash your hands at the table with a beautiful water jug and a bowl and that set the tone for the rest of the dinner. After the fifth course, they take you to their cheese room which is across the street from their restaurant where they had a table full of 91 plates of different types of cheeses, honey, dried fruits, etc. They have a fromager to explain what each are and how to best pair them. It reminded me of a similar experience at one the restaurants at the Capri Palace hotel where they had a dessert room. My favorite course was their version of a Niçoise salad - the presentation was beautifully elaborate. Overall it was a beautiful dinner and I think they lived up to their status. I was most impressed with their attentive service.

Yelp
I must agree with other reviews that restaurant JAN deserves at least two Michelin stars to say the least. If you're in Nice, this is a must-do and you won't regret splurging here. I've dined at a lot of Michelin restaurants around the world and I will say that our experience at JAN is an absolute perfect 10. From the Amuse-bouche to the last course dessert, every dish was prepared with the utmost care and quality. We had the Cristal menu since we wanted to have an earlier dinner but if I could do it again, I would definitely go all out for the Diamant menu. Our dinner at JAN was undeniably the highlight of our honeymoon trip in South of France. Thank you JAN, for giving us the meal of a lifetime!

Art C.

Yelp
Jan was very good... In terms of the dozen or so Michelin rated restaurants we visited in France I'd say they're definitely in the top half (AKA "the good half"). Service was impeccable (as expected) for our early dinner. But before I detail our menu I should first mention one of the shadow highlights of the evening- their breads with roasted banana butter. That butter was absolutely bananas (see what I did there)... Very creative and very excellent. OK... So food-wise, I'm sure they change the menu often, but hopefully you'll get to try the fish dish with vegetables, apple!, chorizo!, and cheese!. Really those ingredients shouldn't even be mentioned in the same paragraph, let alone the same dish. But the chef made it all work- the dish was uh-mazing... That said, this would be a five star review if it wasn't for our entree. We were all hopped up with excitement over the creativity of the earlier dish, so much so that when the decidedly non-creative lamb entree arrived, it really brought the whole meal back down to earth... Oh well... At least the wines were excellent. And this place is still worth a try...

Yelp
I recently attended a birthday celebration at JAN, and was positively blow away by the overall quality of this restaurant! The food and wine are outstanding and the service is impeccable. We selected their five course-tasting menu with wine parings, and the meal was nothing short of phenomenal from beginning to end! The staff provided many special touches throughout the meal, and each course was a completely unique and delicious experience! Some of my favorites from the meal were the house-made bread and butter, the guinea fowl, and the mackerel, but everything was simply flawless; there were no dishes that weren't amazing :-) Bottom line: This is a truly special and amazing venue; I highly recommend it, and look forward to returning.

Anoosh B.

Yelp
What an incredible experience! The setting of the restaurant is dim and ominous but very relaxing. The staff was superb. From start to finish they make sure you feel comfortable and are attentive to every possible need. We did the longer course and it was well worth the extra money because you take a trip across the street to their cheese store and get to hang out there for as long as you'd like. There are lots of cheeses there and it was beautiful. As for the food, it was a nice blend of South African and Nicoise with a mixture of local cheeses and fish as well as South African dishes with red meat. Our favorite was the local fish with a cheese from South Africa wirh chorizo mixed in. The signature dish was. South African "casserole" with a deconstructed version was also out of this world. Every detail was beautiful and the presentations were breathtaking. We appreciated the explanation to each dish as well. This was a very unique experience and somewhere I would definitely come back with family or friends. You will also leave very full!

Yelp
Food and ambiance- 5/5: After spending 2 weeks in France, Nice was the last stop of our trip. I wanted to have a good meal before we started to head home, so I did some research and decided on JAN. I was excited that they offered lunch (2 courses for 45 euros and 3 courses for 57 euros) and quickly made a reservation. While in Dijon, we had a more classic French meal at a Michelin restaurant, so I thought it would be fun to try something different in Nice. JAN describes their cuisine as modern French inspired by South-African flavors. If you are staying in Nice near the Promenade des Anglais area, note that JAN is not super close. It took about 30 minutes to walk there from our hotel, which was the Palais de la Mediterannee. The surrounding area is a little quiet and if you don't look closely for the JAN sign, you may miss it. The interior of the restaurant is very nice without feeling too formal. We were one of the first parties to arrive for lunch, but by the time we finished the place was full. There was a mix of couples, families, and larger parties, and a number of them were foreigners (we heard a lot of English). All of the food was beautifully plated, outstanding quality, and delicious. While it might seem funny, I really enjoyed the bread served with nori and dashi butter. The risotto and sea bass were good but less memorable. For dessert, we had a rhubarb tart. It was light and perfect for the hot July weather. Service- 4/5: Service was polite and attentive, as to be expected for a restaurant like JAN. One thing that I observed was that Jan Hendrik came to greet many of the customers. During our 1.5 hour lunch, he spoke to a gentleman dining by himself, a couple, and a few other parties. He did not, however, greet our party or the two other parties that were Asian. I'm not sure if this was intentional, but it did make me feel less satisfied with the service.

Anna P.

Yelp
Based on the reviews here, dinner at Jan was the one thing I put on the itinerary months ahead of a recent trip to France. Let me tell you -- even the best reviews here barely do the food and experience justice. You'll just have to try it for yourself -- and you'll want to do it soon before Jan wins more Michelin stars, because it's inevitable that it will. It's rare when a restaurant with this level of creativity matches it in taste, but that's exactly what Jan does. The freshest ingredients are combined into tasty concoctions like a tuna tartare watermelon salad served on a round of watermelon shell and a fish dish that would be above average but becomes a stand out with the genius addition of a roobois seafood broth served in a teacup. All of this was expertly matched by a South African wine by the glass that the waiter expertly selected for me when I told him I didn't want a full wine pairing (this only ended up costing me 10EUR!). Speaking of the waiters, service here is delivered at the highest level. Everyone is fluent enough in English to explain the complex menu and we were constantly waited on by at least two people at any given time. To top off the experience, every table got a personal visit from the charming Jan Hendrick himself who is as easy on the eyes as his food is on the stomach. Jan and all of his staff are so passionate about what they are doing there and the pride really pays off. I have been to restaurants with more stars and higher price tags, and few have left me as impressed as I was with Jan. Accessibility: I use a wheelchair and had no problem getting up the small step at the front (I felt I could have done it with a motorized scooter too, and if not the staff is so helpful it shouldn't be an issue) and was given the option to remain in my chair or transfer. Staff was helpful and efficient when it came to stowing and retrieving my wheelchair as needed when I chose to transfer.

Yelp
Amazing experience with everything that's expected of a 2 star restaurant. Incredible French cooking, South African flavors. We had 14+ courses and each one was distinct. Our favorite, surprisingly was the palate cleanser before dessert courses. A mint sorbet that was the freshest, most vibrant thing I've probably ever eaten. Service is attentive and approachable. Pacing is exacting and well anticipated. We were either eating or drinking continuously for 3 hours. All in all, much better than any 1 star I've been to. Would be shocked if JAN doesn't get bumped up a star very soon.

Ankit B.

Yelp
Best food ever, experience is unreal. Deserves 3 stars as a Michelin restaurant, not sure why it's only 1

Liza L.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with delicious and brilliant food. The staff was very attentive. A highlight of our dinner was the walk across the street to the cheese restaurant for a magnificent cheese course! A must go to when in Nice!

Oliver V.

Yelp
Delightful and definitely different from the norm in Nice. A South African slant on dishes creates a certain 'he ne sais quoi' that offers a uniqueness that is also refreshingly new after all of the haute cuisine options we tried with in Paris and Lyon. Service can use some refinement in my opinion but it doesn't deter from the interesting dishes and creative presentations. Small dining room so reservations are needed. But it's also dark with historical touches, so don't expect a view or any open air. Great date spot for an interesting and intimate dinner that'll change things up from the soul old city chaos.

Ken S.

Yelp
KenScale: 8.5/10 "Wow, what in the world is this??" My wife Jun exclaimed in the middle of our meal at Jan, a fine-dining modern French restaurant in Nice, France. She was pointing at the banana butter where you can extract banana-flavored butter from the blackened peel. It was not only clever (Jun kept asking the server who this was possibly made, and the server gave some fairly generic answer, "You just need to put butter into the emptied out banana!") but so delicious that Jun, who normally doesn't eat more than one piece of bread, ordered another one just to have more of this butter. Besides this revelation with banana butter, Jan, which is led by a South African chef Jan Hendrick, had plenty more to surprise us during our meal when we were in Nice as part of our honeymoon/summer vacation. The food at the restaurant had just the right degree of ingenuity to bring the French cuisine forward in a way that provides a ton of satisfaction without being overwhelmed by gimmicks. Jan doesn't offer any a la carte options; there are only two tasting course menus. Jun and I opted for the shorter "Menu Marche." Even before the meal starts, you get a bunch of freebie amuse bouche pieces, including a beetroot wrap with shrimp paste inside that is hidden in a rose petal. Despite the potential for French food to become too rich and overpowering over the course of meal, I was very impressed with the way each food kept its balance of flavor very well, starting with the first course consisting of a risotto-like dish with white asparagus, morels and 24-month matured Comte cheese that may look too creamy at first sight but turned out to be not too heavy and had nice textural balance. A combination of garden peas, scallops and mussels that followed was another refined dish that I very much enjoyed, a harmonious marriage between the garden and the sea. White sea bass, crab, zucchini and melon meringue was also beautifully prepared, and was accompanied by rooibos tea to add a nice aroma to the dish. For the meat dishes, we were able to choose between beef and duck (I went for the beef, and Jun for the duck). Both meats displayed juicy, tender texture and the seasoning was also on point, but what really stole the show was a side of bobotie (a traditional South African dish of spiced minced meat, from the chef's South African root). Its spiced curry flavor was not only delicious on its own but somehow worked seamlessly with the meats as well as a perfect sidekick. Next time Jun and I have an opportunity to visit South Africa, we will certainly seek out this dish. For dessert, a dish displaying the flavors of strawberry, rhubarb and black and pink pepper looked simple yet had a nice complexity to the flavor. Jan is one of the hottest dining destinations in Nice and it is a relatively small restaurant, so I highly making a reservation in advance. The minimalistic dining room gave a Gothic feel to the overall atmosphere that seems to project discipline and quiet confidence of the kitchen. It certainly is a great restaurant for a date night when you are in Nice. There is an extensive wine list from all over France; we decided to go local and ordered a bottle of red bandol from the Provence area that turned out to be quite well-structured to our liking. When we took a taxi from our hotel room to Jan, our taxi driver said Jan is a very special place to dine in Nice and a class on its own. We didn't go to enough restaurants in Nice to find out if it is the best restaurant in a popular beach city with plenty of dining options, but if you are in Nice, it is a place not to be missed if you are looking to have an upscale dining experience with a high degree of sophistication to cooking modern French dishes.

Wei Z.

Yelp
I love every dish on the menu provided and prepared by Jan's Chef. It is located at a place called Le Port inside the Old Town with easy access by tramway or food. Like other restaurants in Nice, its dining area is kind of small and its atmosphere is intimate and very welcoming. It suits for a romantic dinner for a couple. I chose the Chef-suggested set menu as it has several prefixed sets to choose from. It has two starters, one main course (pigeon), and two appertizers. Every dish was exquisitely designed and prepared and each was presented in a tailored-plate or container. It is gorgeous and very pleasing. The dishes tasted just scrumptious. It made you mouthwatering at the arrival of each dish at your table. Overall, the dish is on the sweet and sour side with heavy elements of South African flavors. The restaurant is very much customer focused or friendly. The waiters/waitress are very friendly and warm and professional. Once seated we went through a hand washing ritual at the table with washing containers at the help of the waiter. Also as a compliment, before the two starters, every customer is provided an amuse-bouche with three bite-sized dishes and an envolope with today's menu inside. Finally at the end of meal, each customer was provided with a rock bread to take home. I would definitely come back next time in town.

Christina M.

Yelp
Excellent service, great atmosphere, and amazing foods. The sommelier was very helpful and knowledgeable, we picked his brain about local wines. We were visiting from San Francisco and go to Napa often so we were excited to try French style wines. The food and wine pairings were wonderful. We went for the six course meal. This was probably the most expensive meal I have ever had. Make sure to make reservations in advance.

Erin D.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience tonight! Superb staff and service. It is scorching hot right now in Nice so being able to refresh our hands with rose water after finding our seats is the nicest touch! A copy of the menus in a pretty wax seal- also a great takeaway. But breakfast to take home for tomorrow? You've won us over. We each thoroughly enjoyed our meals. We did the earlier seating so you must do the shorter pairing. They emailed me the night before to confirm any allergies or food restrictions. They were able to adjust the menu for me since I was pregnant, not just raw meat but even the cheeses they used! I was also delighted they had a non-alcoholic drink pairing option for me that consisted of beautiful juices and iced teas. My husband loved his lamb and I opted for the fish as my main entree. The first course was my favorite because the flavors were so unique. Fresh apples, mint, parsley, in a Smokey broth over fish... to die for! There was also a peanut butter truffle at the end of the pairing that I couldn't get enough of. This place is worth the price and well deserving of their Michelin status.

Yelp
Brilliant Michelin French / South African fusion cuisine. Amazing service and attention to details from the moment you arrive to the parting moment. Including some delicious sweets/snacks that you take home. For 1 star it is actually not that expensive. Book well in advance.

Bryn S.

Yelp
Best meal of my life. My husband and I both love to cook and enjoy fine dining. This experience surpassed every other Michelin star restaurant we've been to. It is theater and food. You have to look at this is a total experience. Service is amazing, beautiful rustic but elegant decor, and a dining experience you will not forgot. Completely original and authentic every course. We had the four course tasting menu with wine pairings. They start the meal by serving you a long red stemmed rose with beet carpaccio built into the center of the rose. The entire experience is magic. A must go to spot for special occasions. Dinner was around $200/pp but we'll worth it.

Adrian H.

Yelp
We arrived on time and after we got the menu we were told that we cannot have 7 course. Nothing mentioned in the reservation. Then we had a waiter that did not explain us anything about the food nor the wine even he had the sign of sommelier. But on top one of the dishes he only served my wife and I sad he will not serve me, very bad joke on main course. Service has deserved 0 star and kitchen 5 but all in all I would give 0 star because all needs to be perfect

Penny S.

Yelp
Definitely a special occasion place, but wow, delicious! Excellent service and they were able to accommodate my shellfish allergy with aplomb. Our group had the full six course menu with wine pairings and it felt like ten courses in the end, what with the house-made bread brought to us in a birds nest dough ball at the beginning, to the mulled wine digestif in the middle, to the amuse bouche and post-dessert dessert! I'd definitely go back. Luckily we made some notes on each dish, and took photos!

Monika R.

Yelp
Every time I go there the set menu is just perfect. All the dishes are made with care and perfection. The portions are also in the right size. It's easy to eat too much when having a set menu and everything is so delicious but never been too full when leaving that place. Totally worth going there!

Bob D.

Yelp
Chef Jan-Hendrik is a Culanery Master! We experienced the 6 course menu with the wine paring. We first received 3 "snacks" prior to the presentation of the 6 courses. The snacks and the food courses are each a work of art, chef has a brilliant eye for balance color and composure. But this is not what impressed my wife and I. It was the perfect and unique combination of flavors. Each presentation lit up the entire palate. The wine choices a predict compliment. I have had great meals, but never an experience like this. It was pure culinary perfection. I will return to Nice with friends just to dine at Jan.

Yelp
Overview: without a doubt, after 25+ years of international travel and fine dining at well over 1,000 restaurants - from low to high end, and price ranges from $100 to $1,000 - this is by far my all-time best/favorite experience, as well as the #1 value for the $$ meal I have ever had. In Nice, France for the weekend celebrating our recent engagement, I'd spent weeks ahead of time researching all the top restaurants in the area, reading reviews, etc. and that's how I discovered JAN. To say the night exceeded ALL expectations would be the understatement of the Century! Not only was the "fixed price", five course tasting menu (with wine pairings) insanely delicious, it was so incredibly underpriced that I couldn't believe what I was experiencing. On top of that, the service and primary waiter were amazing too. As a bonus, chef Jan, on multiple occasions, actually served and explained the various dishes himself (to all tables, not just ours)! - a personal touch that is so rare and was greatly appreciated. The wines (from South Africa and France) were fantastic - and again, the price was so affordable I'm still in disbelief. Where else in the World can you dine at a Michelin star quality gourmet restaurant, have a full five course tasting menu (with many added FREE courses), with generously poured and intelligently selected wines, as well as an inspired cheese plate - all for UNDER $125 euros per person?!?!? Not to mention the beautiful decor, gorgeous glassware and china, candlelight, and intimate/romantic setting. Talk about making a guy look like a super-hero in front of his guest/fiancé as if he'd just spent a fortune to treat her to such a special evening. I really wish I could do more than just write this simple review as a means of saying "thanks" for such a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There is no way you will ever regret dining at this establishment, that much I can guarantee you!

Yelp
The best restaurant in Nice. The service is top notch as are the dishes. You can choose the size of your courses but the whole table needs to order the same amount of courses (i.e. everyone eats the 3 course meal)..but you will want to eat the full courses as the dishes are really flavorful.

Yelp
My wife and I enjoyed a tremendous meal at JAN and can't recommend it enough. Each course was unique, full of flavor, and artfully presented. The waitstaff is very friendly, the decor and ambiance very on trend, and the place just has a cool vibe to it. It's not cheap, but I felt like our chef's tasting menu with the wine pairings was a good value compared to comparable Michelin-starred restaurants. Make your reservation a few weeks in advance (you can do so online) and enjoy a very memorable meal. Pro tip: when a course is served in a hollowed-out apple, the apple is for aesthetics, not for eating.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to be brought here for lunch. From the outside you'd almost miss it, the restaurant is so unassuming. Inside darkly painted walls contrast with bare stone walls. The furniture is simple and elegant with very little decoration on the walls. The restaurants is small and feels quite intimate. We arrived with our lunch companions and were given a choice of the á la carte menu or the menu fixe for lunch. As Jan's is a little pricy we all had the menu fixe. Having said that, at €29 for three courses it was a steal. Amazing food. Truely lovely staff. Nice wine. Fab.

Yelp
An excellent experience from start to finish. Everything was thoughtfully executed and presented. The courses kept coming and everything was delicious. Highly recommended for a lavish night out in Nice.

Yelp
What a great find! We stumbled upon JAN on a Saturday night in NIce, sat outside on a chilly evening and had one of the best dining experiences ever. Each course was better than the last. The service was impeccable. I can't imagine a better place to dine in Nice!

Yelp
One word: Fabulous! Okay, a few more words... The food was amazing. Each course was excellent and beautifully presented. The chef himself presented the menu with obvious dedication and passion. The service was wonderful, as was the wine. A must!

Yelp
Phenomenal experience! Rare that the meal, service and ambience are all exceptional. We went with the prefix meal + wine pairing and everything was memorable. The South African flavors and wines were exceptional.

Yelp
A pearl in the middle of Nice. South Africa meets France. Everything was great: service, food, wine, ambience. Keep it up! With an additional sea or harbor view, this restaurant would be unbeatable!

Yelp
A perfect dinner and a highlight of our trip. I would urge anyone reading this to get there before word spreads even more and tables are tougher to get and prices go up. Because for what an amazing experience this is the price is fantastic. The tasting menu is full of wonderful and beautiful creations. The dining room is beautiful with friendly yet professional service. My mission in France was to mostly stick to amazing bistro food with great reviews and avoid anywhere too high end (who wants to pack a sports coat for the south of France in August?). Pretty much every dish was spectacular!

Yelp
I went for a lunch and was not left disappointed. Interior is very balanced and pleasing, didn't feel crowded although it was busy. Food is really good, loved the coffee, the service is professional but not too formal, my kind of restaurant.

Yelp
We had the most amazing meal we have ever been served. The flavors and spices were superb, and paired perfectly with the wines that complimented each course. The entire experience was fantastic - the food, the service, the wine. We will never forget this meal and we highly recommend it, if you are dining in Nice, France!

Yelp
Perfect/Friendly service! Love the ambience. Love the desert that has lycée ice cream pairing with white and black chocolate! Great place to go for a decent dinner close to the port. The Marco Polo tea is amazing.
