The 24 Best Restaurants in Ottawa, Ontario, and Gatineau, Quebec | Eater

"Head just a few minutes north of Gatineau to Chelsea for Les Fougères, arguably the region’s best spot for a romantic evening. The restaurant has been impressing diners since 1993 with delicate French-inspired dishes like veal sweetbread, duck confit, and fresh seafood from nearby waterways. The idyllic, forested setting is special too, with floor-to-ceiling windows in the restaurant that put the birds and trees on display and a curved bar made with rammed earth from the nearby Morrison’s Quarry." - Joel Balsam

I had the pleasure of celebrating my birthday here. The Garden is so beautiful, the food was scrumptious, it was the best food that I had on my trip to Quebec. I highly recommend the duck and tar tar. The staff were engaging and told us about the food when we asked. I saw one of the chefs go to the garden to find ingredients for our dish! If you get a chance to visit, take it. You can even buy food from the shop connected to the restaurant.

From the moment we walked in, this restaurant delivered an exceptional experience. The ambiance was stunning—warm, inviting, and thoughtfully designed to make you feel both relaxed and impressed. Every detail, from the lighting to the music, created the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable meal. And the food? Absolutely delicious. Every dish we tried was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. You can tell the kitchen takes pride in their craft—fresh ingredients, balanced flavors, and creative touches that made each bite memorable. What really elevated the entire experience was the staff. Dynamic, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable, they struck the perfect balance between professionalism and genuine hospitality. They made excellent recommendations, answered questions with ease, and made us feel like valued guests from start to finish. This place is a gem. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just want an incredible night out, I can't recommend it enough. We'll definitely be coming back!

Amazing dining experience. It's a wow!Everything was great in this place; food, drinks, desserts, staff, view, atmosphere... I am looking forward to coming back in the summer, but book in advance to get a table. 🙂

We had a lovely early dinner here, after a day at the Nordik Spa. The service was great. The restaurant is cozy and inviting. It has a great vibe. The food was well presented and fresh. We enjoyed it!

Google
Such a gem! Cannot praise this place enough. I like different cuisines and honestly Ottawa area has few gems but also a lot of mediocre and quite frankly bad food, but somehow still in business. This is not one of those. For a starter, its in Quebec. My duck confit was so exquisite, i enjoyed every single bite, took precious time (about half an hour)to really enjoy it all. Sadly not allowed to drink alcohol, but even without any pairing it was great. Then I contemplated to going back to all my previous reviews and knocking a star off on every one of them - it would be unfair, but it was that good. To quote my partner, it looked like I was in love. And i was! Only bad thing is that the moment had to pass... But this is definitely one of those places where i will come back. Staffs were welcoming and friendly, and the whole place was vibrant.

Absolutely phenomenal, refined, delightful food served in a gorgeous country setting, with attentive, charming waitstaff (shout-out to Marc, who was exceptional). This place is a gem. We had enjoyed Les Fougères before, many years ago, but now it seems better than ever. We explored the beautiful backyard garden afterward, a perfect ending to the meal. Highly recommended. This is one of the best restaurants in the Ottawa region!

Google
Great service in a romantic atmosphere. This place was well worth the drive from Ottawa. Staff was warm and welcoming. Waters were filled often, and our server was always close to check up on our table. I noticed our cutlery and napkins were always clean because the staff replaced used cutlery when they walk by. Every dish was good to its last bite. The duck confit was full of great flavour and textures. Pizza was great to be shared. Desserts were smaller than expected, but they were nice and light.

We ate the 5 course tasting menu. Each course was amazing. Service was excellent. It was a mild summer evening and the screened in porch was lovely. Worth every penny

Yelp
This was an lovely restaurant in a lovely setting. The service was top notch and kind. It's a bit out of the way but we are up in Wakefield and it's perfect, and we don't have to drive in to the city. It was a bit pricy, but the price matched the quality. We definitely got what we paid for, and it was all marvelous! Highly recommend as it's farm to table to. All fresh, all kind service, clean place, plenty of parking.

Yelp
The food was great, especially the dessert! :) My date and I shared two plates and they were both very good the service was casual and the ambiance was good and casual but with a slightly more upper scale than the ambiance would lead you to believe what the menu would be

Yelp
We first heard of Les Fougères from the list of Canada's 100 Best Restaurants. They were ranked #61 in 2020. We were really excited to try them out after reading about their farm-to-table philosophy and their commitment to making real food from scratch. They grow most of their produce right behind the restaurant. We didn't get a chance to see the garden as we visited in winter. We shared the tuna carpaccio, the seafood fry and the squash gnudi to start. For the entrees, we ordered the duck confit and the mouth of the St-Lawrence. The three appetizers were all pretty tasty. As for the mains, while they had an interesting take on the duck confit by mixing different textures, the mouth of the St-Lawrence was underwhelming. To me, it tasted like a soup of seafood in a creamy sauce with no distinctive flavor. The price of the dinner was reasonable considering we ordered three appetizers, two mains as well as a drink and a dessert (260$ with tax and tips). The service was friendly, albeit a bit slow. Funny story, they mistakenly charged us two extra items (we did not notice as we left in a hurry). They graciously called us the next morning and refunded us for the extra charges. Yelp
Les fougères is a classic where we love to go back times and again. Truth be told we tend to forget about it as it is a little off the beaten path, but we are always extremely pleased when we make it here... The decor, ambiance, and service are all, and always have been, impeccable! We opted to dine in, but the screened in wrap around porch with view of the garden or the forested landscape is marvelous. The food was 10/10.. and I didn't expect anything less. Each dish we had had the perfect balance of flavours (the salt and acid off balanced the fats, each bite allowed for varied textures from soft melt-away delicacy to crunchy bits... A perfect symphony playing in unison). Something as simple as beef carpaccio served with oil, horseradish, beets and micro greens was so simple and delicate, and just managed to wow us! The meal was rounded up with a oh-so-yummy honey panna cotta (my fav dessert of all times).... Perfect texture, creaminess and sweetness not to leave you with a feeling of gluttony where you just want to roll-off away in oblivion. The cherry on top of the Sunday was the service. I couldn't have asked more from our waiter. She was there when we needed, yet not hovering around the table. She provided recommendation for wine pairing which were great matches, and described the menu and some of the dishes with ease and making you wanting for a bite of each dish. Her smile was also contagious... Even through her mask. She made us feel welcomed and at ease. Just perfect. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place. Close by to the Nordic spa, it's a perfect place to end your day of relaxation We started with the foie gras on toast and maple syrup and rosemary. An absolute must order as it was decadent and delicious! We followed with the veal sweatbreads which even with the small portion size, was plentiful and satisfyingly crispy without being greasy. For our mains we ordered the duck confit (another must order staple!) That was fall from the bone tender. Lastly we ordered the creme brulee for dessert which was delicious! Highly recommend as it was creamy and you can't really go wrong with such a traditional French dessert. Capped the meal off with a cappuccino Overall, service was attentive and excellent, and the meal was delicious. Highly recommend! We also ordered the steak frites which while not too memorable was satisfying if you're craving some delicious red meat and crispy fries.

Yelp
WOW, EASILY 5 stars! I haven't been this impressed in a long time. I don't know why I waited so long to come here...likely since it was a bit far from downtown, but really only about 20 mins, so I had no excuse! (And you don't either)! I tried: - Charcuterie board (small): pleasantly surprised at the quality of the board given it was only $16 for the smaller portion! o It came with 3 meats and 3 cheeses; the meats are made in-house, and literally melted in your mouth...I was super satisfied, and it blew other boards out of the water that I've tried! I especially loved the duck. o I would probably get the larger size next time. o There was also pickled jalapenos, pickles, two chunky sauces, and a pickle-based chunky sauce too, as well as beets! It was a stunning variety. o Starting off with this board put a huge smile on my face, as I anticipated what was to come next! - Scallops (small portion): it would be hard to decide between this and the confit as my favourite dish of the evening. The broth/sauce they were in was HEAVENLY. I seriously used all the bread to soak it up and wiped the plate clean. I would seriously BUY vats of this sauce if they sold it...it is THAT good. o The little shrimps didn't add much value to the dish, however. - Duck confit (large portion): You NEED to get this; if it's the ONLY thing you get, order this! It is the richest dish, but chock full of flavour, plus a nice mix of tender duck meat and crispy duck skin...divine. The goat cheese it came with made it even more rich, but the sweet pears cut the fattiness a bit. The interesting part was the spiralized potatoes, which was texturally a nice crispy contrast against the tender duck. I'm drooling just thinking about this dish!!! - Seared foie gras: this went really well with the figs that were on top; the slight sweetness contrasted nicely with the rich oiliness of the foie. The brioche bread was also super soft and oily, so the entire dish was a bit too rich. Ideally, I would of just had the foie with the figs. The pine nuts added even more oiliness that was not necessary in my opinion! - Tea (assam satrupa): I thought this tea would be really interesting since it had notes of tobacco, malt, and toasted grains, but it was more like a normal black tea but with some herbal, grassy notes. Easily drinkable and smooth with some milk and sugar! The service was professional and bilingual, and prompt. The interiors were very lovely...everywhere, there is recessed lighting so it's soft, and there's enough activity going on for it to be interesting but not too loud. Next time, I will sit at the bar and see what that experience is like (the kitchen is partially open)!!! One thing that made me sad was that I saw lamb pappardelle on their website, but they only had lamb sweet breads...once they actually get the lamb pappardelle back, I'll definitely be going to try it! Overall, stellar experience and I will be back for sure! I already want to come back for my birthday. -------------------------- Edit (Oct 27, 2018): I actually came back again within 2 weeks since I loved it so much! This time I sat at the bar, so I could see the action in the kitchen, and got the Table d'hôte which is $59, and a good deal. The soup was hearty, a pureed vegetable with melted cheese bits. The salad was either a regular spring mix or an avocado one (extra charge); I saw the avocado salad come out and it looked amazing, piled high with bacon and large pieces of pecorino cheese, so I upgraded to that. Super impressed with the blend of flavours of avocado, pear, and basil...it went perfectly with the olive oil + balsamic sauce! For the main, I got the scallops, since they were my favourite the last time, and it was just as good. I still wish I could just purchase the sauce. For dessert, I chose the flourless chocolate terrine, which was dense, rich, but not overpoweringly so. I even got a small sample of some panna cotta + honeycomb as a bonus right before dessert! The best part was being able to see the Chef meticulously finish each dish, and see the kitchen at work! A lot more fun than sitting at the tables. Also, that night was the first snowfall of the season, so it looked extra beautiful outside, as the lights outside the building shone on the snow-covered trees...super romantic! Overall, service was amazing, watching the kitchen was entertaining, and all dishes were executed well. I've been recommending this restaurant to everyone! :)

Yelp
SO delicious and will definitely come back. Located away from the city, they offer a good and cool selection of different dishes that include local and seasonal ingredients. Just a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle, a date night/celebration, or cap off to spending the day at the nearby Nordik Spa. They had a variety of options that included game/uncommon meat options (I tried the duck they recommended which was very good). Don't be discouraged by the typical "soup and salad" appetizer option that offer with their set meal - the wild mushroom soup was pretty "wild" in a good sense and the salad came with thick chunks of bacon (drooling as I write this). The desserts were good as well but their stand outs are really their savoury options. Staff was knowledgeable and recommended great choices to us but sometimes we had to chase them down.

Yelp
The Food: 1 glass of wine, coffee, two appetizers, three mains, three desserts, complimentary bread service. 3oz Neige Premiere 2008 Cidre de Glace: Whole Wheat Fennel and White with Sea Salt House Butter, Olive Oil, Sea Salt Tomato Soup with Basil and Orange Québec duck foie gras sampler - foie gras terrine pressed with duck and Armagnac macerated prunes, served with maple balsamic syrup; Foie gras mousse with partridgeberry preserve; pan-fried fresh foie gras with rhubarb and rosemary compote Crisped brandade ravioli and garlic chips served on tomato basil coulis with Juniper Farm seedlings Duck, maple syrup and orange tourtière Wild Mushroom and Brie Pie Apple tartlet with maple syrup ice cream and a caramel cage Prune and Armagnac soufflé with prune ice cream and almond financiers Maple syrup pie served with chantilly cream, pears, walnuts Bodum Press of Yirgacheffe Ethiopien The Verdict: Rustic but refined - a space that would not seem out of place in the French countryside - Les Fougeres was a great choice en route from Montreal back to Ottawa and with a lunch menu every bit as enticing as the dinner menu it also proved a veritable bargain for the quality of the food, service, and setting. A restaurant, a market, and a destination given its off-the-beaten-path location Les Fougeres is without a doubt worth the drive to those located in or visiting Ottawa.

Yelp
We went here on a freezing Tuesday afternoon in November. No reservations were needed. What a dream of a meal! Sun drenched corner and amazing service and advice for wine and the order of our plates. We started with salmon and beets, then had carpaccio with Brussel sprouts followed by shrimp in an Asian inspired sauce like Tom Yum. We finished the meal with the foie gras and brioche with a Sauterne. We also had a Rosé and a Pinot. Service could not have been more delightful and knowledgeable. This was a real treat and I can't stop talking about it. It is right up there with memorable meals we had in Montreal at Pied de Cochon and Garde Manger 10 years ago. We don't eat like this often but really appreciate the artistry, skill and sense of ease they created for us.

Yelp
Having been here a few times I feel like I've flooded this page with delish and vibrant photos, and it's time I write a blurb on my dining experience! Highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time to guarantee service (it's about a 15m drive from downtown Ottawa). The menu changes every so often, but their duck confit is a fixture all year around. The portions are pretty hearty, but some are available in half portions which is great for sampling multiple dishes or sharing! There's also a prix fixe menu which is a 4 course meal for about 45$ per person with optional wine pairing. This included a soup, salad, dessert and a choice of main. In the summer it's great to sit outside on the balcony for the fresh air but beware of mosquitos, even with netting! Very attentive service! We could've spent 3h here easily just enjoying the atmosphere! The garden behind the dining area is beautiful and where the edible flowers are grown. They also have a gallery attached to the restaurant as well as a small deli selection. One stop shop! worth making a mini trip out of it!

Yelp
We came here to try the brunch menu. When we arrived around 3:15pm they told us they had a private event to start at 5 and that we needed to be done by 4:15 which was fine by us. We had two local beers and shared the duck confit and the roasted trout. Both plates were very tasty but I found that it lacked in the sauces that accompanied them. Portions are quite small for the price. This is classic for French Canadian cuisine. I have a big appetite so I was still a bit hungry when finished with the main meal. We ordered a desert to share on recommendation which was delicious. The chocolate orange caramel tart was delicious. It was my birthday but they still ended up charging for the desert which is unusual. Service was very impressive - our waitress had good recommendations and was very polite. It was a fine experience but I wouldn't go back. They have a cute backyard and a little convenience store next door. I bought the frozen seafood soup and the sweet and sour duck soup. Both were good but again I wouldn't buy it again. I was expecting to be wowed and I wasn't. Sorry!

Yelp
Excellent Dining Experience I visited Les Fougeres with friends for Sunday brunch and will definitely be returning! The restaurant itself is beautifully designed and there is so much attention to detail. Fresh flowers from their garden are placed on the tables and the settings are quite nice. The pizza oven and kitchen are open and visible to patrons. The restaurant has a large beautiful garden that many of their ingredients come from. There are swings a couple gorgeous gazebos and cute garden ornaments. So peaceful! The service was stellar! Our server was very friendly, patient, informative and made excellent recommendations from the menu. All the staff seemed to really enjoy their jobs and always had a smile on. The food was amazing! I had the fish cakes with poached eggs and leek-caper sauce with a organic mixed green salad - SO GOOD! My friends enjoyed the salmon benedict, mozzarella, and the soup of the day with shrimp. They also serve a variety of fresh baked bread with your meal. Unforgettable experience and I can't wait to come back on my next visit to the Ottawa area!

Yelp
Les Fougères was just amazing! From the warm greeting to the final au revoir the staff at Les Fougères made our dinner a wonderful time. I chose the Table D'Hote with wine pairing and was not disappointed. Starting with the soup of the day which was a cream of asparagus through the Salad Fougères to my seafood combo entree called "The Mouth of the St. Lawrence" and finishing with a dessert of maple creme brûlée the Chef and folks at Les Fougères hit it out of the park. I strongly recommend Les Fougères! Thank you for a delightful time!!

Yelp
One of the best kept secrets in the Ottawa/Gatineau region. Gorgeous outdoor location and warm ambience that feels both rustic yet sophisticated. I held my wedding reception here in 2008. My guests could not stop raving about the food (duck confit!) and the venue. Perfect for a special occasion or just a lovely meal out. Thank you, Les Fougères!

Yelp
Hands down one of the best meals I've had in years. My girlfriend and I stopped by for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. If you can sit on the patio, do it and order a bottle of rosé. Everything we ordered was phenomenal and the service was impeccable. Next time we're in the area we will definitely be coming back. Magnifique!

Angela S.

Yelp
I browsed their store - decided on a duck tortiere, butter chicken meal portion and pumpkin spiced ice cream. The tortiere was very filling, and the chicken pieces in the butter chicken were generous. The pumpkin spiced ice cream was a highlight - dense with flavour and reminds me of pumpkin pie filling. Can't wait to try more dishes next time.

Yelp
I lived in Ottawa for fourteen years -- FOURTEEN YEARS -- and didn't make it out to Chelsea to try this place. This, despite me considering myself a foodie. This, despite me going to Le Nordik at least a few times a year! After I moved away from Ottawa, I put it out of my mind and accepted that I would never go. It took a going-away party for two friends moving to the UK to get me up from Toronto and across the border (to Quebec) to try this place. There was barely any parking on an early Sunday afternoon, but I managed to squeeze my car in. I was early for my reservation, and so I checked out their amazingly well-stocked shop where you can buy frozen versions of their food and other gourmet goodies. After warming myself up in front of their wood-burning fireplace, our party of ten was seated in the most homey, sun-drenched part of their dining room. The service was amazing with accomodating our tenth guest -- our friends' six-month-old baby. The food was good, too! They offer a special on weekends where for $15 you can add an appetizer and a dessert, along with coffee, to your brunch. Unfortunately I was pressed for time and could only fit in a delicious slice of duck maple syrup and orange touritère. I have to say, the more traditional egg-based brunches looked AMAZING. Other than my adorable godson, this place is definitely a reason to make it back up to Ottawa!

Luc S.

Yelp
Three words, MORE THAN PERFECT ! Service 15/10 and the mix with food and wine is impressing ! I took the 12 serves and everything was good in all this plates !! Thanks you :)

Yelp
Amazing restaurant either for brunch or dinner located in quiet road in Chelsea. Cute and cozy. Price is reasonable. Great service, serving delicious French/Quebec food with local ingredients. Love their little store next to the restaurant where you can buy some of food from the restaurant to take home. Highly recommend the wild mushroom lasagna to go! Also try their duck tourtière! The quail was good too!

Yelp
My BFF brought me here for my belated Birthday lunch. Not only is the setting lovely, the service was great, the food was beyond excellent, the wine list is fantastic, the company superb, the whole experience is one to be repeated hopefully - often!

Yelp
Best restaurant in the Ottawa region. Excellent food in a beautiful, casual atmoshere.
