Martin Wishart

"For over 20 years, Martin Wishart has been welcoming diners to his eponymous restaurant in the historic and characterful port of Leith. Over the years, he has continually tweaked and reassessed the food and décor, and the bright, modern style of the dining room is a great match for the current cooking. The various menus showcase Scottish produce like grouse and langoustines in dishes that deliver the flavours they promise, with nothing unnecessary on the plate." - Michelin Inspector

"Though not widely known, chef Martin Wishart singlehandedly revived Edinburgh’s fine-dining scene. Case in point: Before he arrived in 1999, there were precisely zero Michelin-starred restaurants in the city. Now there are several, including his eponymous spot in the historic Port of Leith, where he serves “classically French, proudly Scottish” cuisine. Here, diners can choose from à la carte, six-course, and eight-course menus, complete with such standout dishes as roasted duck breast with red cabbage, beetroot, macadamia nuts, and red currants."

This has to be one of the best fine dining, tasting experiences we have had, and we are seasoned fine diners. From start to finish, everything was perfect. The head waiter and staff were amazing, they couldn't do enough for you. We had the anniversary tasting menu, and it was superb, not one dish could we find fault with. My daughter even said it was the best meal she ever had. Highly recommend to anyone.

WOW WOW WOW It was our 10th Wedding Anniversary so having heard fantastic reviews about this restaurant we decided to book a table and go for the 4 course lunch menu. We were greeted upon arrival and shown to our table and immediately felt at home. The dining room is not pretentious but classical and bright, the service is natural and heartfelt not false like actors acting a pre rehearsed ritual. The food was exceptional cooked to perfection concentrating on the best ingredients cooked classically with fantastic techniques. This restaurant concentrates on simplicity and flavours not overloading dishes with elements that are not required. We had Cheese Soufflé, Pumpkin Risotto, Sea-bass glazed with champagne butter and Confit Duck cleverly paired with Pasta glazed in stock and each bite gave different flavour hits. We ended with classic Apple Tartan again melt in your mouth. Not to mention the free pre starters the bread with a selection of accompaniments and the chocolates at the end this was 8 courses each with 4 soft drinks and we got change out of £200. If you are a foodie and want the real deal then Martin Wishart is the place to go. Its concept is fantastic and it’s accessible to all budgets wanting to try a Michelin Star experience. I have had the pleasure of eating the 9 course tasting menu at Raymond Blancs hotel and the biggest compliment I can give Restaurant Martin Wishart is that it was a different level to that. The best dining experience both myself and my wife have ever had by a country mile so thanks to all the staff for making our wedding anniversary so special. Can’t wait to return ASAP to once again make our pallets dance. David and Victoria Carroll

Google
Fine dining but not much else. As the first in the restaurant, it was nice having the place to myself in the corner for the first several minutes enjoying the quiet. Quickly the entire room filled up with reservations and the normal chatter of a restaurant filled the air. Ordering the tasting menu I expected to be given a rundown of ingredients and locations with each dish but sadly was not. A simple repeat of the ingredients in each dish as it was set down and that was it. The dishes were delicious, make no mistake. I left satisfied but not full, the tasting menu included dessert and a cheese plate was added in as well. Two glasses of wine to pair with the dishes. The staff were quick about and courteous, clearing plates, placing new cutlery, filling water glasses and cleaning wine glasses. Again, I did expect more description and sourcing of the dishes. Seated at noon I left by 2:30, a solid lunch. Overall it was a nice experience but left me wanting more. Sadly didn't have the same impact as a similar restaurant down the street did upon first visit.

Had a table of 8 for lunch on a Friday. Absolutely excellent 3 course lunch menu. Firstly the amouse bouch came as 5bite size portions followed by bread. The scallops was excellent starter dish. The mains of monkish again excellent . The passionfruit creme brulle and the blackberries sorbet with white creme was Also Excellent. Service was excellent. We had a bottle of the Gosset champagne and Sancerre which was a mark up of x3.

I had the 3-course lunch menu. Taste was phenomenal. The dishes were designed in a choreographed way, whichever starter or main you have chosen. Portion was just right for lunch, although I would love to have one more bite (when it was this good). Cocktail selection was wonderful, too. This is the sort of restaurant to come across my mind every time I want to eat out in Edinburgh.

This was my wife and I’s first experience of fine dining at a Michelin restaurant. It was certainly better than “fine”, in fact it was excellent. We were kindly greeted and taken to our seats. All staff were exceptionally professional and attentive. We had the lunch menu and we had many dishes that we hadn’t tasted before. All of which were amazingly presented and had unique flavours. There was only one dish my wife didn’t like but only because it was a bit ‘cheesy’. Thankfully I was there to gobble it up. Overall a great experience and it makes you appreciate the flavours of food, instead of munching meals without even thinking.

We went to celebrate an anniversary. We enjoyed the tasting menu for dinner and it was excellent! Stand out aspects were the beetroot horseradish macaron, halibut ceviche, Orkney scallop with caviar. The staff are knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. The decor is elegant and understated. It was a wonderful experience and we will be back. Highly recommended!!!!

Google
We had the four course lunch menu on a weekday. Excellent food, on par with the Michelin star rating. Attentive service, not too formal, exactly the right tone. Good wines and a very informative young sommelier. Not cheap, but what do you expect at this level.

Yelp
Amazing experience. Service was top notch from start to end. Every course and amusement bouche were delicious and fine. Excellent dessert. Definitely deserve their Michelin star. In a quiet location with few other restaurants next to the water.

Yelp
Service was extremely satisfactory and well rounded (I don't remember who my waitress was but she was spectacular!!) food was very beautifully plated. everything look like dessert-- however most items, of course, were within the 7 course tasting menu. Most things were great. but duck patè was not to my own liking- but some may love it. Restaurant ambience was romantic and rich-- yet I found the excessive wooden effects & decal with very few windows, a little stuffy and 70s esque. THE WINE PARING WAS AMAZING

Lori ..

Yelp
Excellent food and fabulous service! Irma guided us through the evening's culinary journey and Alexio assisted with the wine selections. The evening spent with my sisters was capped off by really great food. The vegetarian menu was spectacular and the amuse vouch courses were sublime. The restaurant was a little loud due to a large party at the restaurant but otherwise a wonderful environment! The restrooms were clean and that is not always the case in restaurants so it was greatly appreciated.

Yelp
Excellent food and service, as expected at a Michelin star restaurant. Ingredients were all so fresh and tasty, and impeccably prepared. The ambiance is a bit lackluster, as the interior design is more reminiscent of a generic hotel lobby than a high class restaurant. However the staff are so kind, knowledgeable, and elegant that they definitely make up for it. I tried most all the items on the lunch menu, and could not possibly pick a favorite. So so good!!

Yelp
The most unaccommodating and rude staff. Do not eat here, they do not deserve their Michelin star simply for the reason of having a rude and disrespectful staff. Save your money and go anywhere else. Far better food and diverse menu at other establishments like Cote, Number One, and The Kitchin.

Yelp
This was the best restaurant I've ever had the pleasure of enjoying. I'll 100% return and will recommend it as a must-visit when in Edinburgh. The 6 course tasting menu was marvelous. Each dish was beyond perfection as was the vegetarian tasting menu my cousin enjoyed. The service was impeccable. The setting, magical. I can't IMAGINE what one must do to get more Michelin stars because this place is pretty close to purfect.

Yelp
My hubby and I were in Scotland for our 25th anniversary and decided to "have a slap up meal" (as our local host called it) in honor of the occasion. This ended up being the best meal we've had in 23 years. Hubby went with the 8 course menu that honestly had some things that scared me, so I went with the 6 course vegetarian menu instead. However, my fears were unfounded (he let me taste his). Snail ravioli, squab and even pig trotters were sublime. Between the 14 things between us, nothing was a miss- each was actually a revelation. Service was professional, though I did have to wait a bit longer than I may have expected for wine and bread, but taking in the whole experience in totality- it's a minor quibble and so still 5 stars. Plus, we had a lovely local couple next to us who eat there every year and we enjoyed our conversation immensely. It was just a fantastic evening.

Yelp
Excellent food and worthy of the Michelin Star! Service was top notch but we would recommend that they eliminate the table behind the post near the door. It feels isolated and does not allow one to appreciate the atmosphere of this fine restaurant.

Yelp
Phoarr! This place is elegant, exquisite and by far the best Michelin star restaurant here in Edinburgh that I have tried so far. I have yet to try 21212 or Balmoral No. 1. I have been to The Kitchin & Castle Terrace and between the 3, this is by far the best. I am not going into how all the food taste as we went for the tasting menu and there would be just too much of them to review and remember. Unlike the other 2 Michelin starred restaurant that I have been to in Edinburgh, the food here was very consistent and the flavour and taste just exploded in your mouth with each and every course. I will let the picture which I have taken speaks for itself. How you imagine they would taste like from the picture, it was exactly how they tasted. Let your imagination run wild. Alternatively, if you have the money, please do come here for the tasting menu and you will absolutely not regret it. I have been to the Gordon Ramsay Restaurant in London which is a 3 Michelin star and this place still trumps the Gordon Ramsay Restaurant. I think this is a restaurant worthy of the next 2 Michelin stars. Expensive but definitely a great experience.

Yelp
First Michelin star experience and it didn't disappoint! Tasting menu at a very reasonable price. The dining experience was worth it alone. Food very prepared very well, and service was wonderful.

Yelp
Dissapointing. Only two items we would want to eat again, and found our selves describing our courses as " not terrible" "it's fine" "okay I guess". Not what you'd expect for a Michelin star restaurant. We know fine dining well and this sadly fell very short. The good: The staff were all very friendly! Had some great conversations. The mushroom soup which was given to start was wonderful! The Seaweed Butter and Sourdough bread were excellent The Truffle Scallop Rissotto was divine! The Moscato was magnificent However, Service: Time between service and even to receive menus was excessive. The dessert took a very long time we were told because our soufflé fell. Hmmm The shrimp and cabbage dish was very poorly done. Shrimp were rubbery :( The best thing on the plate of duck with carrots, potatoes, and a creamed Swiss chard was the Swiss Chard. The potatoes were inedible. Extremely greasy! One of the wine pairings burned your nostrils and tasted like kerosene. The soufflé itself lacked flavor and the apricot sauce they added made it worse. When asked if he liked one of the items in particular our server replied "not at all". There you have it! A place whose staff doesn't like the food. Sad :(. We actually included Edinburgh in our travel itinerary so we could dine here. Frankly expected more for the star, reputation, and nearly 300 pounds.

Yelp
Came here alone because I was given indication that this was THE best restaurant in Edinburgh. Aizle, comes up in the same list, but I won't know until Sunday. I must say, they have a well coordinated team, with superb professionalism from before you even enter the building. A well dressed gentleman in a suit was the first impression I received upon my entry. He quickly asked if he could stow my bags and coat and I was directly taken to my seat by a charming hostess. I could go on about the tasty South African Cabernet I had. Or perhaps the fantastic delicacies, that were presented with absolute excellence. But I don't want to spoil the surprise. (Go for the 8 course. Refrain from eating all day, if you will, as it will fill you up.) Every detail is payed very close attention to by each staff member. If you leave to go use the washroom, your napkin is neatly folded and place on your table, ready for use again. If the food arrives in your absence, they cover it and standby until your return. Your water and wine will never be emtpy, (Also note, the glass and silverware here are of fine and high quality. You can tell, just from drinking a glass of water.). You are always given a new set of appropriate silverware, with each new dish. The staff here take delight in conversation with you and asking for feedback on the dishes. This is definitively a restaurant of a higher class and caliber, so dress appropriately, because everyone here suits up. Very classy, very professional. Even though, I didn't show up in a suit, (I had slacks, a Ralph Lauren thin sweater, dress shoes, and a peacoat), I was not looked up at all with disdain, the way some of the other arrogant restaurants I have been into, back in America, if you weren't in a suit. No discrimination here. Just come here with an appreciation for fine wine and dining, and some good company, or not, and you'll have a memorable night in Edinburgh. It was my first night in Edinburgh, Scotland, and I am so glad that this restaurant set the tone for the rest of my stay here. I fully recommend this place to everyone. Make it a point to set reservations here. Every time I step foot in Edinburgh, I will have dinner here. They have respectfully earned my business with their service and food quality. I am a customer for the next few decades to come.

Yelp
As I live and breathe this was probably the greatest dining experience of my life. Other half took me on Friday night as a birthday treat, and my god a treat it was. From the moment you walk in the door you know you are somewhere special. Greeted at the door we need not even give them our name, based on the time and without any notes in site he greets us both by name....! With no hurry given to reviewing the menu we were instead given a beetroot macaroon with horseradish cream and asked if we wish to have an aperitif. Once that had arrived and we had begun to enjoy it and relax we were then presented with the menu, expertly explained by the waiter. For me it had to be the tasting menu, other half went for the shellfish tasting menu. We both had the wine pairing. What happened next I don't have words for: 7 courses of the most exquisite cooking I have ever had the pleasure to witness. From the amuse bouche of 3 tasters including salsify, scallop and salmon mousse, to the scallop with pigs trotter puy lentils, duck with morels, ox tongue and potato.....it just kept coming! The wine with each course seemed to get better, some how not clahing against the last. At the end of the meal we were privileged enough to be taken on a tour of the kitchen. If this is was michelin dining is about....I want more of it. To say this place is JD Recommended is as big an understatement as can be made! :)

Yelp
Experienced an extraordinary dinner for four. The food was superlative and I also very much enjoyed that while service was certainly just about perfect (to me that means thorough, knowledgable but unintrusive), there was a warmth and lack of stuffiness to it that is wanting in many Michelin-starred restaurants and was quite refreshing. We all very much enjoyed the chef's tasting with wine pairing and perhaps the best part came at the end when we all eagerly answered YES to whether we'd like cheese to finish our meal. The server (who wasn't French, btw, so not all of them are...) came by with the cheese cart and went over the varieties. He was clearly someone who was not only very knowledgable but really seems to love what he does. The four of us decided with him to make two plates, one mild cheeses, one stinky cheeses and wow every one of them was just incredible and went beautifully with the Champagne we ordered to finish the meal with. Would love to return...

Yelp
This is one of the only Michelin Star Restaurant in Edinburgh. It's located off the beaten track (or in other words, down at Leith) and is something quite special to Edinburgh. I quite like getting in a taxi and going down to Leith, it almost feels as if I'm in a different city altogether! The restaurant is funky, as my mum described it. It's nice, modern and clean, but maybe could do with a touch more excitement. But you don't go to a Michelin Star restaurant for the decor. The food was, as expected, delicious. The best part is there is always a good deal on to eat here, so you can get amazing food for next to nothing! I had lamb with vegetables in an orange sauce, which was YUMMY and my dad had steak, which he loved. It's a brilliant place to come to for a special occasion!

Yelp
Surprised by the small amount of reviews? This place in my opinion is the best of the Michelins in Edinburgh (and yes I have tried them all..) I feel like I could eat the food here every day, there is a lightness of touch in the preparation that really comes through when compared to it's ilk. Recommending the set lunch, very good value at £27 for 3 courses. Thing about michelin places is the bread is always very good so you can stock up on that as they will never refuse you more (thrift recommendation #1) Service is attentive but not stuffy even though the room is pretty formal. You can tell everyone involved here is really interested in good food from the lowest water pourer up to the head chef. If you have the budget come and eat here. I would recommend getting a bottle of wine from a shop and drinking it on the picnic benches at the shore before you go in. The wine list is good but the markup is over 300% in places. Plus the water of leith can be nice on a good day. (Thrifty tip #2 - Edinburgh has no open container law so don't worry about kicking about with a bottle of wine).

Yelp
Don't be scared of the Michelin Star or the formality of the dining room. Service was friendly and the lunch prix fixe is an amazing deal. the day we were there there was a mix of business lunches, a wedding party, a few dates and a few tourists. They were accommodating to my boyfriends gluten free requirement and the food was, needless to say, top notch. What really impressed me was the wines I ordered. One Borgogne white and a Bordeaux. If I was at the end of my day and no the start, I would have been happy to drink more but alas, it was not to be. If you do order the foie gras terrine, be warned it is a VERY generous serving. It would easily be enough for 2-3 and yes I ate the whole thing.

Yelp
Another winner of a meal from Wisharts. Service spot on, food...too amazing to describe. Overall experience an Edinburgh must-do. Book in advance, sign up to their online newsletter as you actually get the odd 'deal' sent through. their cook school is also worth doing. Last minute offers to be had also. I stand by my first review. If I could eat like this everyday oh boy would I!!!!

Yelp
It would be a little ridiculous for me to review the food in this place. It's got a Michelin star, and, if the rumours are right, it's on the brink of another. So just accept the food is really incredible. In fact, it's more than food. It's art. Art you can eat. The very best kind of art. So instead of talking about the food, I'm going to talk about my experience of Restaurant Martin Wishart. First off, it was my 21st when I went. A big occasion. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were treated like royalty. The waiters (all men, all French) were attentive but not intrusive. When they weren't needed they sort of lurked in the shadows, then appeared out of nowhere ready to assist. We had the tasting menu with the matching wine menu to go with it, plus the supplementary cheese board coz we're greedy. Now it has to be said that this cost approximately the same as a small yacht, or 6 weeks in the Seychelles (that's hyperbole!), but it was really worth it. Our waiter talked us through all the wines, explaining why it matched. And when we'd finished they brought me a plate which had petit fours delicately arranged and 'Happy 21st Birthday' written in chocolate. A very, very special experience indeed.

Yelp
This is in my top five places I have ever eaten at. Should you choose to dine here you will most definitely not be disappointed. The food is expertly crafted down to the finest details. This restaurant truly captures the imagination and is not just a place to go eat a fancy meal, this is a place to have an experience.

Alex A.

Yelp
Came here for dinner, everything we ate except for one thing was great. Staff were very attentive. Nice looking reataurant. Don't order the lemon Panna cotta because it tastes like mint toothpaste, they are super heavy handed with however they are using the mint and it kills all other flavors in the dish. The chocolate desert was good.

Yelp
Best restaurant I've ever been to. Simply superb! I've been to the cook school twice also and have had the best time. Can't wait to go back. Thank you for a great experience

Yelp
This restaurant thoroughly deserves its Michelin star. The service is, as is to be expected, immaculate. The food delicious and different. Try the tasting menu to experience a range of taste treats and wonderful wines to accompany them. Skip the coffee though.

Yelp
Yum, Yum, Yum Great food , great people, great night. We did the tasting menu, and the chef made special accommodations for all of us. The lobster and scallops were sublime. I don't think its possible to have anything that doesn't taste extraordinarily delicious. However this place is expensive, going back would be probably a few years from now :) But a friend of mine suggested this great App on the ipad called great british chefs thats has Martins recipes, so if I wanted to I could try to recreate some of the yumminess at home. http://www.greatbritishchefs.com/

Yelp
My favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. It is flawless. The ambience and service are always excellent. The food is always divine. It deserves more than one Michelin star. No regrets.

Yelp
One of the best meals I have ever eaten. First of all, they have a vegetarian tasting menu. The service is impeccable. The food was incredible. The place is expensive, but worth it. Don't miss this restaurant when you go to Edinburgh.

Yelp
Spectacular dining experience. The finest service I have ever had, an imaginative menu, and stellar wine pairings made our 2 1/2 hour lunch fly by far too quickly. And it was one of the few times I've been to such a highly rated establishment and actually felt comfortable and welcome - the staff genuinely want you to enjoy your visit and come back again. This is the definition of destination dining.
google avatar

Lars B. F.

Yelp
They deserve their Michelin star. We had a great lunch and the service was very good and friendly without going overboard. Why all their waiters are French I do not know but it does not matter as long as the service was as good as it was.

Yelp
OK this was one of the best places in Scotland we had in our tripl The artichoke soup was rich creamy with flavors of truffles and a great dish. We had the tasting course and found it a pretty decent tastng menu. There were about 2 stand out dishes like the soup and the rest were about a 7-8 which in our personal 1-10 rating is pretty respectable. I would give this place about a 8 to 8.5 out of ten. It was a solid performer but not yet at a French Laundry level but worth a visit if you are traveling to Scotland or for a special occasion.
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
This is very approachable high-end food and well worth the price. The five course tasting menu with a glass of wine gets you out at about £80. Try to leave room for the cheese if you can - it looks divine but it's hard to squeeze in after deceptively filling courses.

Yelp
I've been to Martin Wishart so many times, and I have to admit its one of my favourite restaurants EVER, and I've been to many good eateries both at home and abroad. The atmosphere there is really good, and I can't commend it enough. Obviously the best thing about this place is the food, which is simply amazing. So well prepared, fantastically presented, with a really good wait time (quick compared to other 'posh' restaurants). You really can't beat the selection on the menu at Martin Wishar, and the prices aren't too bad either. The staff are also fantastic, which really leads me to recommend this restaurant. One of the best in Edinburgh!
google avatar

Qype User (introw…)

Yelp
Every time someone tells me that there is no place to eat a good food in UK I always think about fresh fish in Ullapool and about Martin Wishart (maybe The Grainstore as well) in Edinburgh and about a few others but the MW will be always my favorite. I chose this place for my wedding dinner. Starter: Millefeuille of veal sweetbreads & Kindeys; Main Course: Roast loin of burnside farm rabbit; dinner: cylinder of jivara chocolate + coffee espresso/espresso macchiato(the best I've ever got on the island) .

Jamie A.

Yelp
Had the privilege of eating here on 3 occasions and every time it has been an amazing culinary experience. Obviously it's not the cheapest of places, and I could've still managed a chippy after it, but the food is just absolutely unreal. It's more of an overall experience as opposed to merely going out for something to eat. If you want to treat yourself and don't mind dropping about a hundred quid a head, this is definitely top of my list every time.

Qype User (heathr…)

Yelp
Faultless food and service, we enjoyed the tasting menu with wine, and managed the extra cheese course too, a beautiful menu and good wine list. Would definitely recommend a visit

Qype User (nomidi…)

Yelp
The service is impeccable, the food amazing (though not in my opinion better than the Three Chimneys in Skye), along with a fantastic wine list. I had the tasting menu with wine, and an extra cheese course which is well worth the experience. I don't really like the decor though, but that seems to come part and parcel with Michelin starred restaurants.
