Muru

"You’d be hard pushed to find a restaurant with a greater focus on wine than Muru. This cosy little bistro is home to quirky touches such as a wine bottle chandelier, a bar made from old wine boxes and a raised ‘cellar’ – and that’s not to mention the nearby wine bar they run. Simple, tasty dishes are on-hand to accompany the excellent wine list, and the sommelier’s pairing suggestions are spot-on." - Michelin Inspector

The 18 Best Restaurants in Helsinki - Eater

"This cozy bistro in the heart of Helsinki is ideal for a relaxed dinner. Muru’s impressive wine list is kept in check by sommeliers Samuil Angelov and Taneli Lehtonen — known as two of the best sommeliers in Finland. On the daily-changing menu (52 euros) you might find classic dishes like salmon tartar, charcuterie, or bouillabaisse. Muru’s risotto of the day is widely hailed as the best in town. We went as a group of six people. It was a significant birthday for one of us, and we wanted to have a meal out together somewhere nice to celebrate. The whole experience was wonderful. We had the five course meal choice with a different wine for each dish, as suggested by the restaurant. The choice of wine was explained every time, details about where it was produced and what type of grapes were used to give the specific taste of the wine. I definitely learnt a lot.. And the food was truly wonderful, check out the photos on this review page. I would say it was the best restaurant experience I have had in the last twenty years..

I was recommended this place by the receptionist at my hotel, and it was truly worth recommending further. When I walked in, I just said “surprise me” without knowing anything about what they had on the menu or what they were known for. First, I got both sourdough bread and focaccia with garlic butter, along with some Caster Liebart Cuvée Cécile Champagne. All of this was really good. The first course was beef tartare with thyme mayo, pickled chanterelles, and sourdough crackers and this has to be the best beef tartare I’ve ever eaten! It was served with Bottega Vinai Pinot Nero 2019, which paired fantastically with the dish. The second course was their Jerusalem artichoke risotto with Finnish apple and wow, the flavors in this risotto were truly amazing. Definitely worth trying when you visit this place. It was served with Domaine Gresser GC Wiebelsberg 2003, again a perfect choice for this meal. For the third course, they served pan-fried trout with potato purée and beurre blanc. The fish was excellent, with a crispy skin and a great balance of flavors. I never thought I’d eat trout in a restaurant that was better than the ones I catch and cook myself, but this was definitely better! This dish was served with Domaine Jean Dauvissat Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Léchet 2022 and once again, a great choice by the sommelier. For the cheese course before dessert, I was served Ossau-Iraty and Fromager d’Affinois with homemade flatbread and some jam. At first, when combined, I didn’t notice that the flatbread had a hint of licorice flavor. But when I tasted it on its own, I did and although I don’t normally like licorice, this combination of flavors blended together beautifully. It was served with Canfine Castelvecchio Barolo 2019, which, like everything else, was excellent. Finally, for dessert, I had chocolate praliné mousse and blackcurrant leaf ice cream and this has to be the best mousse I’ve ever had. It was served with Arnaud Lambert Crémant de Loire, a really nice way to end this wonderful meal. To finish it all off, they served me a Negroni, which was also amazing. Thank you for the excellent service and delicious food! This was truly a fantastic dining experience. I would recommend everyone in Helsinki to visit this restaurant, such a cozy atmosphere and a super friendly staff!

The food was delicious with great friendly service. We didn’t do the tasting menu, but chose the A La carte menu. We both had the Tomato Soup, I had the Risotto, and my husband had the White fish. We paired the food with a Muscadet, which was perfect. Had the cheese plate to finish.

I had the 4-course meal. The potato waffle was just okay, the truffle pasta was too lemony, and the crème brûlée was underwhelming—I’ve had better. The fish lacked flavor, and the fish sauce was too strong. Service was slow, but the wine selection was great, which was a highlight. Coming from NYC, the flavors felt a bit boring for my taste.

Good food & great service! The restaurant gives a cozy, family atmostphere. However the space is a bit small, and so many tables around. I’m a bit overwhelmed when sitting too close to other people. 😅

Google
Quality food and wine: beef tartar, Iberico pork, cheese. The only thing letting it down is a service, which was very slow considering just a 4-course meal. The tables are close to each other, but it doesn't feel crammed.

Google
High quality, delicious food. Cozy atmosphere and nice interior design. The staff is adorable and very service minded. However, 5 courses of small dishes took 4 hours. Since we did not do a wine/beverage package, as we do not drink alcohol, it felt very very slow.

Yelp
Muru has become our first choice for any business-related dinner, regardless if it's with clients or a celebration within the company. The price level is affordable - I'm happy to spend my own money there as well. I think I've been close to 10 times in the restaurant now, and I have never left unhappy. I would recommend that you let yourself be pampered by the staff. The daily menus can't go wrong, and the wine recommendations tend to be spot on. My understanding is that they have a very wide selection of wines, so if you are interested in choosing yourself you can probably find something interesting. So why 4 stars and not 5? As someone else also wrote, although the food is superb it's not really memorable. I can probably only name 3-4 dishes out of all the dishes I have had there. I've also come to notice that some of the dishes are repeated if you go there again within 1-2 months. That's been a bit disappointing. But Muru is a superb place where you really get value for money and I definitely recommend it.

Yelp
Beautiful little place in an up and coming neighborhood in Helsinki. I was there recently visiting an old friend and taking in the sites and this was the one place he said we had to go to. I was not disappointed. The atmosphere, was classy yet relaxed. It was the type of place I would take an important client but also show up on a Wednesday in flip flops and feel right at home. The service was outstanding. Our server was cool, had a good attitude and presented everything in style. I loved his wine selections as pairings but if you go and love wine, ask to see the handwritten list. It is crazy for being so far in the frozen north. The owner keeps them stacked in his office and only for those willing to ask. A super good spot with lots of character that is certainly worth a stop when you are freezing your balls off in the rugged north.

Yelp
It was very good. I was told since it was the night before a national holiday that it was a fixed menu. Overall the food was good and they had decent wine pairing recommendations. I enjoyed the appetizer more than the main dishes however

Yelp
Awesome place to eat, food is delicious and the service excellent. Only downside is the dark decor, in April it's ok, but when I went there for the first time in October when the evenings are dark, it's too dark. Still, food is so good!

Yelp
Muru is one of the greatest - if not the greatest - restaurant in Helsinki. The service is wonderfully professional and unpretentious. The food is to die for. The wine list (and the expertise that goes with it) is unprecedented. Muru is also a great place. You can really tell that the owners are young, enthusiastic and ambitious about their restaurant. The decor is charming and the tables are close together like they should. Menu leans towards France but with some interesting local twists. An early reservation is a must, but in the afternoons you can probably get a table at the bar and try some their gorgeous white wines with a cheese plate.

Yelp
Considering how much how much you have to book this venue in advance, I was anticipating this so much as we went for a family reunion here on a wintery afternoon. I was firstly impressed by the friendly yet humble service by this place. The only downfall O saw by my first impression was how small an casual the atmosphere was. The red brick walls and standard paintings with subtle furniture made it cozy. Therefore I was expecting the food to make me jump from my chair. The menu is flexible in terms of allergies. The food however was well prepared with fresh and local ingredients. It has apparently become a trend to embrace 'nordic roots' within local restaurant culture here. And this place was truly the epitome of the movement. Roast lean cut pieces with minced vegetables and experimental sauce was my favourite dish. Also the dessert of a petite créme doughnut in berry sauce was impressive but nothing super special. The food with its ingredients and flavours was on point. However it could have been a little bit more experimental for my taste buds. Considering how hyped this venue is for local food enthusiasts and within media and how much in advance you have to make a reservation, I expected a bit more in terms of a dining experience. Worth trying if you want to add a bullet tour belt with local restaurants.

Yelp
Wonderful food. We were guests, so I didn't know what the prices were. It was a fixed menu, but they were good about adapting it to food allergies. We tried the wine tasting menu--all wines were very good. Why four stars? The tables are so crowded that the waiters kept bumping my chair...quite annoying.
