Let me preface this review by saying that this applies to the Julbord experience, not their normal daily menu.
A one sentence review of the experience would be: “No matter how much money you spend, you can’t make Julbord good.” This is coming from a non-Swedish person who grew up in central Europe with access to fresh local grown vegetables and fruit, home cured meats, fresh fish from the Mediterranean and a great appreciation of Italian cuisine. I am by far not a lover of Swedish cuisine. On to the review.
The food was underwhelming. Pickled herring was okay (as pickled herring can be) yet nothing to swoon over, the same goes for their salmon selection. Meat in general tasted bland, from dry salami to meatballs, no specific taste that would inspire my tastebuds. The dessert section consisted mostly of pralines, of which the ones made by the pastry chef were really good, but not enough to elevate the whole experience. A bigger selection of in house baked pastry would be nice.
The beverage pairing was pretty bad. Non-alcoholic choices were mostly overly sweet juices that seem to have no connection with the food. My companion at one point asked if they might have served me syrup and forgotten to mix it with water. The wine pairing was sub par for the price payed. The red was especially bad, as if someone mixed it with vinegar to be a bit crude. Let me add here that I don’t consider myself an expert but I do come from a wine country and have tasted a variety of it through my lifetime and the red was one of the worst ones I ever had.
The space and the atmosphere were beautiful and cozy. The music at the right volume and on theme, the Christmas decoration fairytale like. Yet the place could do without the fold out impromptu tables that were probably set only for Julbord. A Michelin star restaurant shouldn’t have aluminum fold out tables, in my humble opinion.
When it comes to the service, I’d say it was okay but again not what I would expect from a Michelin star restaurant.
All in all, this experience turned me off from wanting to come to the restaurant on a “normal” day to taste their a la carte menu as it unfortunately wasn’t worth the money.
