Pétrelle Review - 9th Arr. - Paris - The Infatuation

"Just like The Bangles, this 22-seat restaurant knows there’s nothing sexier than an eternal flame—they have a projection of one against a stone wall, single burning candles on tables set for two to four, and a small working fireplace. The romantic space is very grandma’s attic-meets-17th-century palace, with mismatched velour chairs, twinkling crystal chandeliers, and old sewing machine stands that double as tables. The modern French cuisine is just as steamy as the decor. Unexpected flavor pairings on the four-course tasting menu might include a creamy brocciu cheese mille feuille topped with a lone capucine leaf or a kiwi pavlova featuring bits of extra crunch thanks to teeny-tiny pieces of celery." - Sara Lieberman

"The bric-à-brac décor here is pretty irresistible (a random antler shed here, some antique Chinese hats there), and it’s also the perfect backdrop for one of our favorite, out-of-the-way date night spots in Paris. The homestyle French cooking is as exuberant as the surroundings—and it’s topped off with excellent meringues."

Pétrelle is your go-to for a romantic Parisian dinner. We visited in December ‘24. It is perfect with white tablecloths, candlelight, chandeliers, and tasteful, muted decor. As an added bonus, if you visit during colder months, a wood stove heats the dining room adding a wonderful lush smell to compliment the wonderful food. When my wife was unable to eat something on the tasting menu, they kindly offered a substitute. The service was wonderful, and the food was even better. Each course was excellent, but the showstopper for me was the fillet of Picardy venison with Jerusalem artichokes with hazelnut praline and cocoa jus.

We had a wonderful dinner here. Romantic candle lights, warm fireplace, friendly staff, and seasonal food prepared really well. I definitely recommend having dinner here. It will not disappoint!

I’m scared of Pétrelle getting more well-known than they already are. I go here quite regularly, and it has never disappointed. Chef Lucie’s cooking is always thoughtful and scrumptious, and Luca is a wonderful host. The ambiance is cozy and romantic. It’s exactly what you’d imagine Paris dining would and should be like. I don’t adore the area, but for Restaurant Pétrelle, I gladly go. My number one favorite restaurant in Paris for sure.

We went for our anniversary dinner as the description of this restaurant seemed perfect for us. Small and intimate dining with great food. It definitely did not disappoint. From the attentive, perfect service with the just right amount of spacing between courses and the amazing food. We were a bit late due to traffic getting into Paris, but the staff worked with us. In a restaurant like this, being late creates a bit of an issue as they try to space their seatings so that food is individually prepared as it should be. I really appreciate that they worked with us on this and the ambience, presentation and food was just perfect for us. Highly recommended for an intimate, authentic french meal. It is definitely not cheap, but worth the price.

Traditional French restaurant ambience. Fantastic food. We had the lunch set menu for 28 Euro. The appetizer of white asparagus was very chill and tasty. the entry of pork neck was so tender. We loved this restaurant! The waiter is Luca and he is so pleasant.

Amazing place. Best meal we had in Paris. The design of the space is gorgeous (great for romancing), the service was friendly and attentive, and the dog and cat made us feel like old friends. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Warning: this is a bit of a novella... you can scroll down for the bottom line :-) I go to Paris as often as I can. Each time I go, I search out something new and special. Pétrelle holds a very special place in my heart and stomach. It is a true hidden gem in the 9th Arr., with the closest metro being Anvers. The restaurant is primarily a two-men show; the chef Jean-Luc André, and a waiter who covers the limited tables. It is a true French bistro frequented by true Parisians. I love everything about this restaurant. From the décor, the menu, the food, and quirky little things. Peering through the windows from the outside, you just see dimly lit space. However, once you step inside, you're swept away into what feels like an eccentric uncle's lounge. Red, white, black, and wood are common themes throughout, including stacks of books and random knick-knacks. Overall, it provides an intimate and cosy atmosphere. No other restaurant has offered this unique ambiance. Despite being unique, it may not appeal to everyone. However, I loved every minute of it. We were the first guests to arrive at the restaurant, which is normally only opened from 8-10pm. The space is quite limited, with only 7-8 tables scattered about. The waiter seated us at our table and handed us the menus. The menus were beautifully hand-written, featuring a very fresh and inspiring selection of food. All the food is crafted with the best locally sourced produce from the markets. As we browsed the menu, I would peek into the kitchen and see the chef prepping. Lumberjack and I opted for the prix fix menu, because it was a great deal for around 30€ per person. We started with soup, progressed to a beautiful main, and finished with a delectable rice pudding. We also had a bottle of wine with our meal, which we also enjoyed. The service was decent, despite Lumberjack making an effort to speak French, only to be responded in English by the waiter every time. Random tangent... so in the UK, we would normally have cheese and fruit after dessert. After finishing our dessert in Pétrelle, Lumberjack asked for cheese... the ensuing response was surprising. The waiter gasped and said "you want cheese AFTER dessert?!" It's as if we had shit in his mother's handbag or committed blasphemy. Oh the atrocity! After that little episode, we politely asked for the check while we enjoyed finishing off our bottle of wine. The toilets also have a unique eccentric charm in itself. With a little bit of everything from a chalkboard and mannequin hands... before leaving the toilet area, I make sure to leave our mark on the chalkboard. We enjoyed our relaxing dinner until the restaurant closed. With the 3-courses and bottle of wine, the damage came in around 100€. On our way out, we finally noticed the resident cat perched on the table where the complementary meringues waited for you to grab from the basket. We said goodbye to the kitty and snatched up a couple meringues. The sweet and lowdown: really intimate and romantic setting; good for a night out with your lover, or even an intimate dinner with close friends. Definitely book a reservation, because of the limited 7-8 tables. Pétrelle is closed Sundays and Mondays and open only for dinner (8-10pm). Definitely an amazing gastronomic find in the City of Light.

Yelp
There is little to add to what's been said already here on Petrelle. I just ate there for the first time and was delighted by the quirky hodge podge decor, impressed by the food & its presentation, pleased with the wine and pleasantly surprized by the friendly service. Non-animal lovers may be put off by the dog and cat roaming the restau, but I wasn't bothered. The vibe works for group girlie dinners or romantic dinners a deux.

Yelp
This is hands down one of the best meals and eating experiences I have had to date. I was traveling for work to Paris and our second night there most people are taken to the popular restaurants that are overrated and overpriced. My boss and I wanted something different. Our driver for the few days being a true Parisian offered up his favorite spot. We had the French people we worked with make the reservations and they too were excited because they'd never been. First of all, the setting is amazing. It's on a little road on a hill and you feel so far from everything and tucked away. I felt like I was right in a movie. When you walk in there are baskets of ultra fresh vegetables, and our driver had mentioned this is the freshest meal you can have. A huge red and white painting covers the wall and there are only about 8 or so tables, which makes this all the more intimate. Let me just say from the wine to the desert every bite was sheer perfection. You could actually TASTE the TLC in the meal. Seeing as there is one chef there is something extra special about it. I started with a white bean and lobster dish and had what translated to Veal Neck for my main course. I never in a million years order veal, let alone the neck, but the drive insisted it would be like nothing I'd ever tasted. Boy was he right. So delectable, almost melting in my mouth, with fresh veggies on the side so delicious it's hard to describe. Also, my boss started with a wild mushroom and cooked foie gras dish that was unreal. We finished with every desert on the menu, passing them around each having a bite. The desert of the day was caramelized figs with a homemade rice/fig pudding and ice cream. Yum dot com. We had a nice long meal with two bottles of wine, and it was one of the more memorable meals to date, and nights in general in the gorgeous city of Paris. I can't recommend this bistro enough, especially for out of towners if you want the true French experience.

Yelp
This is a fine dining restaurant in Paris (monmarte district) that could not put a foot wrong. I ordered the steak cooked medium rare which was served with seasonal vegetables and they could not put a foot wrong. The meat melted in the mouth and the vegetables had a nice flavour to it. It's a bit of a romantic restaurant with dim lighting, rose petals on the table and soft background music. It is expensive, and worth the price for me. My friend ordered the lobster with stuffed zucchini for entire and fish with seasoned vegetables and absolutely loved it!! They also gave us complementary mirangue which had a delicate filling - so creative and tasty! Made it less sweet and have it a kick!

Yelp
Sadly, my review is not a good one! I had selected this restaurant based on a month of research for what would be a VERY special birthday night in Paris. You need to know that I have been to Paris 25+ times, and never had a bad dining experience, and I am very familiar with schmancy restaurants... that said... Yes, the place is physically charming, beautifully lit and romantic... but the waiter was SUCH a jerk, it ruined the experience. Apparently, asking for butter is a major strike in the etiquette department... he literally brought me a pound of butter with the wrapper still on... Ok, so he thought I was a stupid American... but insulting the guests, in a restaurant of that caliber? Seriously?! There were about 5 of these rude moments, but that was the topper... giving two stars because of the ambiance. So the lesson is... if you are going there for a very expensive, special meal... DON'T ASK FOR BUTTER! Give me a break...

Yelp
I kind of feel bad giving 1 star...the service and ambience is 5 stars no doubt but for the price we paid (almost $300 for 2 people) the food lacked any wow factor and I actually had a dish that was oversalted. If there were a few stand outs I would happily give 4+ stars but we really did not enjoy the food. If you go to Paris stick with the cafes....people watching with a nice bottle of wine and reasonably priced and yes, yummier food is worth way more.

Yelp
Yes this an expensive restaurant, but as far as I'm concerned it is well worth the price. The atmosphere and service is incredible. I'm obsessed with all of the art in this restaurant. There is a restaurant cat and dog who lie around and absolutely give the place character. The food was wonderful. Of our group of four we each started with the wild asparagus (talk about yum) and langoustine, which was incredible. The stand out main course was an incredible Iberian pig with root vegetables. We rounded off the meal with an exceptional cherry clafoutis and chocolate cake. The wine selection was wonderful. An absolute must.
