24 Best Vegans and Vegetarians in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Queen Sheba isn’t the only Ethiopian restaurant in Montreal with a robust vegan offering, but it’s arguably the best. Its “vegetarian delights” menu features five warming, veg-heavy (and vegan-friendly) dishes. Can’t decide? Opt for the veg combo, which includes three vegan items." - Holly Tousignant

"Mile End’s lone Ethiopian restaurant serves up a feast order an array of meat and vegetable-based stews, and sop them all up with spongy injera bread. Delivery with UberEats, DoorDash and SkipTheDishes." - Joel Balsam

Love this place! I love the presentation when eating Ethiopian food. There are all these flavors and such a mix. It's so much more exciting than everyone just ordering one dish for themselves to eat. The restaurant was clean, the servers friendly, the wine crisp and the food amazing!

My partner and I love to explore little gems in the city and this ethiopiam restaurant was on our list! The place is very comfortable and spacious, decorations are welcoming and well placed, very kind staff and we got our food in a few minutes. We had ordered the tasting menu for two, and my partner absolutely recommends the beef and I recommend the chicken (Dor Wat), though it is spicy. The vegan side dishes were spectacular with a strong aroma. Eating with our hands was a different experience but we loved it!!! We had to get used to their flatbread because it was a slightly tangy sour taste to it. It’s a bit of a walk from the metro, but would totally recommend if you want to take a little stroll before and after eating, especially if it is nice outside! I had called to make reservations and it went well:)

As I stepped into Queen Sheba, I was immediately engulfed in the rich aromas of Ethiopian spices and the warmth of its vibrant ambiance. Each corner of the restaurant spoke of tradition and culture, setting the stage for an unforgettable culinary experience. The menu, a masterpiece of Ethiopian cuisine, offered an array of tantalizing dishes! But what truly made this dining experience exceptional was the owner's passionate dedication to their craft. Deeply rooted in his culture, with a deep knowledge of Ethiopian cuisine, he guided us through the menu with enthusiasm and insight, stopping to chat with us and sharing stories. His accommodating nature ensured that every dish was tailored to our preferences, making me feel truly welcomed and valued as a guest. In every bite, I could taste the love and expertise that went into creating each dish. It was more than just a meal; it was a journey through culture and tradition, leaving me with a heart full of warmth and a newfound appreciation for Ethiopian cuisine. Absolutely loved coming here with my family, can’t wait to come back!

This restaurant is just fantastic. The food is fresh and delicious. The service is wonderful. Seriously the best Ethiopian food I’ve had in my life. I can’t wait to bring all my friends here.

Amazing food. We came here a couple of times with friends and it’s truly a place t which once you try you’ll definitely be coming back. They’re good is exceptional and the staff and cook are very very welcoming. We tried server all dishes so far and will definitely come back to try out the others. This place isn’t crowded so it’s a great place for an intimidate date as well.

So incredibly delicious! Four of us shared a generous plate, and we loved every bit of it. And the tej wine was an amazing discovery -- highly recommend!

Their house made honey wine is the best thing I’ve ever have. And I travel around the world. Trust me on this one. The fish was exquisite too.

Google
Our experience at Restaurant Queen Sheba was truly incredible. To start, I love Ethiopian food, and the food here did not disappoint. We got the 4-person tasting platter and it was the perfect amount of food for four. It came with three different kinds of meat and four (I think) vegetarian options. I don’t eat meat and still left full and satisfied. The lentils here are so rich and flavorful and the ingira was delightfully sour and light. The service was attentive and helpful and we were checked on many times to see if we had enjoyed the food; I really appreciated the care they clearly put into their food and the customer experience.

Yelp
Absolutely yummy Ethiopian food!! The waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. We also learned a little about the reason behind the spices in the food.. so it was a learning and culinary experience. We went early so we could take our time and saw the restaurant get very busy. It has a great vibe and people seemed happy and loving their food. This will be one of my main stops in Montreal, It's yummy!

Yelp
Wherever I go, Ethiopians have wonderful hospitality and this one marks another. A nice atmosphere with inside and few tables for outside seating. I still ordered the sample platter even though it came only for two or more servings. Definitely enough food. I took the leftovers home. Although no single item stood out, as a whole, the meal was satisfying. I give it four stars mainly because I don't believe there is much alternate options for this cuisine in Montreal. The injera was well made. The douro wat was a bit spicy and the beef wat was bland.

SuziQ B.

Yelp
Great food. Vegan veggie combo was delicious. Quick service. Lovely area nearby parks.

Tania C.

Yelp
My favorite Ethiopian food in Montreal which was introduced to me by Ethiopian friends.

Yelp
My favorite thing about Queen Sheba, beyond the generous portions, is the beautiful artwork lining the walls and the ambience. The decor and vibe here is awesome. We ordered the veggie combo for two, and couldn't finish everything. The shiro wot and misir wot were particularly flavorful.

Yelp
I don't eat ethiopian food often, but when I do I never regret it. This is food best enjoyed in a group for sure. I shared a big combination platter with a friend - we picked out 2 meats and 2 veggie stews. I was a bit limited because I'm not very tolerant of spicy foods but there were still some less spicy ones on the menu. everything came out very nicely displayed on some injera. My god, I love that stuff...it's like crepes on steroids. wonderfully spongy like a thin crumpet, but funky and tangy from the fermentation. It sops up all the juicy stews amazingly. We got an extra basket because we were pigs and couldn't stop eating. The yellow chickpea stew was quite delicious. We also got a whole other dish - the raw meat which was served with some stewed greens and some cheese. Wow...this was like a heavily spiced tartare and it was again delicious. I can't wait until the next time we go back to indulge in this great food.

Yelp
Updating my review for delivery through UberEats. Their food is just as good delivered. Everything comes super fast and is still very fresh when it arrives (important when you're ordering raw beef!) The most recent time we ordered we got two veggie combos (couldn't choose, needed all of them), a meat combo with doro wat and alitcha wat, and the lega tibs. Everything super delicious as always. The kitfo serving is quite large (get the one with the cheese.) My favorite veggie dishes are probably the gomen (collard greens), messir wat (lentils in berbere spice) and the potato dish that comes with green beans. Kitfo and tibs are always good, and although chicken is normally a lesser protein in stews the doro wat is just so good (plus it comes with an egg!) Definitely would recommend adding this place into your delivery rotation!

Yelp
Solid Ethiopian fare. The Yetsom Beyaynetu for 2 was the perfect blast of aroma and spice we were looking for. Vegetarian options are plentiful. We've tried many good and bad Ethiopian restaurants in the US and this one can hold its own with the best. Service was fine. Parking might be tough, but if you troll the side streets it's okay. Highly recommended.

Monica G.

Yelp
The food sooooo good. If you want really good, flavorful good, this is your place. If you have a gluten allergy, go here (the injera has barely, so get the rice).

Sharon D.

Yelp
This was by far the worst Ethiopian food I have ever eaten. And since I'm married to an Ethiopian who insists on eating it wherever we are in the world I feel fairly confidant that I know what I'm talking about . Watered down food that was so expensive it makes my head spin. The beef Wat was unrecognizable with tiny cat food sized pieces of meat swimming in a gross greenish sludge. Only the injera was decent. Not at all spicy which is a hallmark of the cuisine. Do. Not. Eat. Here.

Emma F.

Yelp
really delicious plate for two lovely servers they have ethiopian stained glass on the walls for purchase!
google avatar

Matt D.

Yelp
Was delicious and on par with several E restaurants I've eaten at. Service was great, too!

Paula M.

Yelp
This is the best Ethiopian food we enjoyed in a long time. Food was authentic, beautifully presented with layers of flavor. Great environment and the owner was joyous and welcoming. Will be back next time in Montreal. Must see!!

Yelp
First time trying Ethiopian food and I'm in love people!!! It was so good! I mean, I'm writing this review and all I want to do is get in my car and drive back there to eat their food again. Since it's my first time experiencing this type of cuisine, I can't compare. But my tastebuds and gluttonous soul were sooooo happy lol! Everything was tasty. My cousin that loves Ethiopian food and tried all of the Ethiopian restaurants here and elsewhere said that this is a very very good place. The service and ambiance of this place makes it all the better. They have a Groupon deal and as soon as I got home, I bought the deal. I can not wait to come back!
google avatar

Caroline D.

Yelp
We had the gomen, alitcha, and shiro wat - I would say the alitcha was their best out of those three! Gomen was a bit salty and also mushier than I would expect, and altho the shiro wat had a nice kick to it, I guess I wasn't paying attention as I usually don't expect it to be full purée, and I often feel like there could be chunks of chick peas. My bad tho! Might be the best that Montreal has to offer in terms of Ethiopian, but since I'm visiting it's hard to say. Nice folks tho, and not crazy expensive.

Kioni S.

Yelp
Love Ethiopian food, so a little bias but enjoyed the food a lot. Defo not suited for people who can't take spice, but if you are defo the burn you've been waiting for. Would recommend to dine with people to get a variety and can be a lot of food for one person. Curious to try other Ethiopian spots. It is also a great spot for people for trying this Ethiopian for the first time!

Yelp
This was my first time trying ethiopian food and it did not fail to impress me. My friends and I got the tasting platter which comprised of 2 main dishes + one braised beef and 5 different types of vegetables. You had to get ready to eat with your hands, which makes the experience quite unique as well! We also got a bottle of wine. The price of the platter and the wine was very reasonable.
google avatar

Lubiere B.

Yelp
Ordered via Uber Eats. Had a vegetarian combo (green beans, potatoes, and cabbage) as well as a meat combo (minced beef and doro wat), with spicy lamb. Food was solid for Montréal.
google avatar

Brandon S.

Yelp
I went with my girl friend last night. We were recommended by another friend The food was very good. We had the tasting menu for 2 which gives you 3 veggies and 2 meats. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The flavours are different from the norm. The berbere sauce is very good. Further , it's quite an experience if you have never had Ethiopian food.

Yelp
Great food and an amazingly friendly owner! Support your local restaurants and business owners ! I highly recommend this location, it's incredible!

Yelp
Thanks to the yelp app, we were able to find this place during our weekend trip to Montreal!!! The food was amazing, seriously good foooood. Really cute place with a nice front porch area where we had our late lunch/early dinner after hours of walk at the royal mountain. The Ethiopian bread injera was nicely sour and soft. The wait stuff guy was also very helpful. We took his recommendations for the food and we were so happy. He also called a cab for us. Very friendly and welcoming. We will definitely return!!!

Gordon K.

Yelp
Amazing. Everyone was so nice. The food was great and they accommodated a gluten free eater. They helped us order and the flavors were amazing. Such a fun evening.
google avatar

Andrea W.

Yelp
I ate here with a friend a few years ago, the food is exquisite, well seasoned bursting with flavour. There's just enough in a serving to tease your pallet and fill you without feeling overstuffed the decor is also tastefully done. I'll have to make my way back here soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Exceptional value and deliciousness. A neighborhood gem. Kind owners, and authentic food

Yelp
I love Ethiopian food and Queen Sheba did not disappoint me. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. My friend and I went to the restaurant last night without having a reservation. The restaurant was fully booked, but somehow they managed to give us a seat at the bar. This being said: I recommend to make a reservation in advance :). If you step into the restaurant you smell the spices, and you don't want to leave without having tried their food. They also have a great selection of bottled wines. I wish they had more variety when it comes to ordering by glass. Also, try their coffee!

Yelp
Amazing restaurant with wonderful dish platter to share. I really enjoyed dining here. The dish platter was so unique and had it's own kick of flavour to each of the dish options. The host is friendly and, despite being the only person at the station, he was attentive in servicing throughout the meal. Definitely a place I would return to many times.
google avatar

Yelp
Sharing a platter of Ethiopian food with good friends is such a pleasure, but in Montreal we haven't had many affordable options, so I was thrilled to hear about Queen Sheba. The ambiance is wonderful--the tables are well-spaced, but cozy; the space is warm and clean and perfectly lit; there's music, but it's easy to converse. The food is terrific: generous quantities, and fresh, with just the right amount of spice. The service is really top-notch and friendly. Oh, and it's all really affordable! I'm already planning my next visit...
google avatar

Yelp
I lived in Ethiopia a few years ago, and I am always on the lookout for delicious Ethiopian food. I was not disappointed! The vegetable combo (beyaynatu) gave a generous portion of all of my favorites: shiro (chickpea stew), misir wot (lentils), atekelt (cabbage and potatoes), gomen (collard greens)...delicious! The owner is sweet and attentive and humored my broken Amharic. Visiting Montreal from New York, I expected to crave poutine but found myself wanting Ethiopian, and Queen Sheba really hit the spot.
google avatar

Lily L.

Yelp
Food was very good. See pictures. The host was friendly and attentive. Only minus right now is that they don't have desserts, but they are looking into it.

Young Y.

Yelp
Excellent Ethiopian food at the Queen! The injera and berberi taste excellent! My wife and I had the plate for two with doro wat and minchet. Both were absolutely delicious. I added the chacha Tibs and what a meal! Excellent place for a date or a small group. Intimate setting where you can feel your food before you enjoy it. We are from out of town and we were excited to find this spot! Give it a try!
google avatar

Sonja M.

Yelp
Food and service were outstanding. We had a wonderful evening, with food that was absolutely delicious. We picked a mix of vegetables and meat dishes. There are several different combinations either vegetarian, meat, or a combination of the two available, so you can easily find one that you like. And of course everything is served with and on injera, delicious sour dow bread. Can't wait to go back and try out other combinations!

Yelp
Go. So so so good. Nice atmosphere and service and beautiful food and presentation. Affordable and delicious.

Yelp
Five stars for these five reasons: 1. Service: fantastic, so friendly, lovely waiter (rare in Montreal) 2. Locally run: by an awesome family who has been in the city since 1992 3. Food: top notch, incredible variation among the veggie and meat dishes. Everything so tasty, not super spicy, but just enough. 4. Atmosphere: very chill, clean, minimal and welcoming decor - not too loud. 5. Music: best jazz compilation with fab piano riffs.

Carolyn M.

Yelp
3.5stars I expected more out of this place.. I thought it would be more flavorful but the vegetable combo was bland. The meat (doro wat, chacha tibs, kitfo) were okay/good but the portions were really small for the price you pay. Service was kind of slow since there was only one person hosting, waitressing & cleaning but overall it was a good first time experience!
google avatar

Thia R.

Yelp
The food was good and everyone was friendly, but the experience overall was mediocre. I love Ethiopian food, so I was excited to come here. I went with a very large group which might have something to do with the problems. The service was very very slow even though we appeared to be one of the few tables in the restaurant. There was a lot of confusion how much food to share and we ended up having to ordered more. If I lived closer I would give it another try with a smaller group of people. I would also only order the vegetarian dishes (they were far superior to the meat based dishes IMO).
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Came here for a quiet dinner on the patio with my girlfriend and had a very pleasant experience. Service was a little slow for how quiet it was but the food itself was rather good and the chef came around to check on the tables that were in the restaurant and he was very nice.
google avatar

Morgan P.

Yelp
Great food! Not only did we have a great meal but dining with a 9-year-old and 9-month-old, they were extremely helpful making sure both kids had food to eat as well. My husband (who's a bit more food traveled) said it might be the best Ethiopian he's had. We would definitely dine here again!
google avatar

Yutong W.

Yelp
excellent experience in queen sheba enthusiastic waitress recommended teff with all kinds of sources and took good care of the vegetarian

Yelp
First off, if you've never tried Ethiopian cuisine, go try Ethiopian cuisine! And if you're going to try it, try it here. I came here with a group and we ordered the tasting menu. Everyone in our group loved it. We had such a nice variety of what the restaurant offers. The flavours of everything we ate were phenomenal. And the price is definitely right for what you get here. This place will leave you full, but still wanting more!

Binita P.

Yelp
Lovely ambience, the food was very delicious and yummy! Being from a Ethiopian family, I have been eating this food since young but the taste here was just mind boggling! The server was really pleasant and humble! I wish you would open your franchise in New York as well. Thank you for all the lovely food!
google avatar

Jeanna H.

Yelp
I'd give them zero stars if I could!!! Sign on front door CLEARLY WRITTEN that they were open until 11 pm. We walked in at 10:20 and they turned us away. Wouldn't even let us get take out. With so many other Ethiopian restaurants, we won't be back.
google avatar

Sabeena S.

Yelp
I came here with a bunch of my buddies on a Friday night. We made a reservation last minute and they were able to seat us quickly. I absolutely LOVED dining here. The wait staff is really polite and the ambiance is perfect for groups. They have several large tables. Plus the food was delicious, so good that we ordered seconds. I believe we had the meat platter to share- I was excited because the meat was halal. But it also had some vegetarian parts. Everything was delicious. Will definitely be back for more!

Jeremy D.

Yelp
This is a pretty good Ethiopian place, the people are really nice, and the ambience is great, however Nil Bleu Has better food. The price is great, drinks are great I really like this place, but when I crave Ethiopian I'm usually going to the other place.

Margaret M.

Yelp
Oh dear. I'm always on the lookout for new Ethiopian restaurants so I was very excited to find out about this place. I noticed Queen Sheba while walking past one day, and immediately made plans to go over the weekend. The restaurant is nice and comfortable, the location is convenient, and the staff are lovely, but unfortunatley that's where the positive review ends. My friend and I ordered a couple of vegetarian combos that featured typical Ethiopian fare - lentils in berber sauce, split peas, mixed veggies, spinach, etc. The first thing we noticed was that everything was dry. Normally, the sauces from the food soak through the injera, but these dishes were so dry they were honestly difficult to swallow. The fact that the injera was thicker and denser than I'm used to didn't help. The split peas were also undercooked (crunchy), so we ended up leaving most uneaten. Finally, the taste was underwhelming. Good Ethiopian food is incredible for its spice blends and bursting flavours, but this food almost seemed intentionally bland. I'm left wondering if the other reviewers have never had Ethipian food before, because I'm honestly baffled by the positivity of the previous comments. I hate leaving negative reviews for places that I really want to support. The people here seem wonderful and I would have loved to have found a new regular dinner spot. I only hope that my comments can be helpful in some way, because I would love for this place to succeed. Considering they have good service, a good location, and a nice sized restaurant, they really just need to improve their food in order to have a winning combination. TL;DR: Food is dry and bland. Restaurant is nice and service is great. Wish I could have loved it. One star for the food, second star for the service and overall restaurant experience.
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
Just went again -- 3 months later -- and it was amazing again. Service a bit slow, but that's the norm for this kind of food. Incredible vegetarian offerings, generous portions, complex flavors... love this place.
google avatar

Ann G.

Yelp
We had not been in Montreal for a long time, and our old standby restaurants no longer exist. We came upon Queen of Sheba accidentally, and it turned out to be the best dining experience in our trip. The atmosphere was casual and relaxed. We had a vegetarian combination dish, and it was excellent. What was unique about this restaurant, though, was the exceptionally friendly and attentive service. We never had to ask or look around to get our water refilled. When the waitress asked how everything was, she seemed to really want to know. Even the chef came to our table to ask how we liked the food. When we asked what one dish was, he told us, and brought us an additional complimentary serving, since we said we liked it. We were told that the restaurant was only 4 months old. We really them the best of luck and would highly recommend it to others.
google avatar

Yodit T.

Yelp
I walked in and it felt like home. I'm Ethiopian and this restaurant did not disappoint. The service was excellent and they're able to provide rest recommendations. They can also accommodate a large party. Vegan and vegetarian friendly! First time in Montreal, but I will definitely be back. Thank you!!!
google avatar

Myrite R.

Yelp
This was a fun spot to go to with a group. We were mostly veg, so didn't get to try the meat yet- but everything was yummy with lots of selection- And when you run out of Enjera bread, they keep bringing you more until you polish it all off! Also they brought the extra portions in a separate bowl so there was sooo much food to enjoy. I have a feeling the meat would be even better. The ambiance was ok- not as cozy as I would have liked and the lighting is a little dark and night clubby while I prefer more of a La Khaima restaurant vibe but that didn't take away from the experience. Family run- really friendly service. They also serve alcohol.
google avatar

Johanna K.

Yelp
Love this place. We have eaten at so many different Ethiopian restaurants in different cities and this is by far my favorite. The ambience is elegant and tasteful, the service was excellent and the food Exquisite. Can't wait to go here again

Yelp
My wife and I had an excellent, memorable dinner here last night. At the outset we found the decor very cool and the establishment noticeably clean and cared for. The staff people are gracious, friendly, fun and accommodating (little changes like moving a table - it's all good , smiles and laughs.) Extensive menu, and when we were served the food was tasty and intriguing in seasonings. I actually found that my digestive system *liked* it which hasn't liked much lately. We will definitely be going back as it's our neighborhood. Happy to have these newcomers here on the Parc/Plateau.
