Smor Serves an Enthralling Open Face Potato Sandwich in the East Village | Eater NY

"I found the East Village newcomer to be a small, bright spot with big windows and modern decor that could pass for a rest stop on a Scandinavian highway; they specialize in smørrebrød, the region’s open-face rye sandwiches. The most intriguing smørrebrød is the potato ($8), built with three or more small, skin-on spuds cooked to creaminess (they must be perfectly cooked or the sandwich would fail), flavored with tarragon and chives, lubricated by aioli, and given crunch by toasted rye crumbs. All together it’s a filling open-face sandwich and one of the most enthralling so far in my sandwich journey—carbophobes beware!" - Robert Sietsema

Smor Serves Artistic Danish Rye Sandwiches in the East Village — and Other Cheap Eats | Eater NY

"About three months after Sebastian Perez and Sebastian Bangsgaard opened it, I found a very small, sunny Scandinavian sandwich shop on East 12th Street in the East Village whose furnishings are very Danish modern—comfortable, spare, and hard-edged. The menu concentrates on smørrebrod, those open-face assemblages built on a slice of rich, crumbly rye that almost doesn’t seem like bread, and naturally some feature smoked and pickled fish, with herring the clear queen. The chicken salad with bacon ($8) is a classic, heaped high with mayo-laced poultry and stacked with enough bacon, accented with shredded beets and a frond or two of purslane, that it feels more like a small lunch than a canapé. As with all the smørrebrod here, much attention is paid to artistic presentations, and figuring out how to eat them is half the fun. The menu also offers buckwheat noodles, yogurt and granola, pancakes, and — being in the East Village — both avocado toast and a kale bowl." - Robert Sietsema

Paid this little restaurant a visit because I got mega hungry while walking around the museum, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality and taste of the smørrebrød! Generous toppings and fresh ingredients. Service was a little lacking because they seemed to be a bit short-staffed, but it was still decent.

I entered the restaurant, and there was a sign saying to wait by it to be seated. I stood next to the sign, and a staff member I made eye contact with told me that a colleague would be with me shortly. Naturally, I expected to be helped within a minute or so, but I ended up standing at the entrance for over ten minutes without anyone saying a word to me, avoiding to make any eye contact until I leave this place.

The food and rum were excellent! My server Mariela was extremely helpful in making the right choice for lunch. She's friendly and checked up on me several times during my meal. The dessert wasn't the petit four that I'm used to, but it was okay.

Horribly slow service! We waited 1 h for two open sandwiches and finally left the place without eating and just paying for our drinks. Avoid unless you want to kill time instead of visiting this nice museum.

Such rude staff. We waited by the sign to be seated. After a while and older rude waitor tutted and waved us back a few centimetres without speaking. We dutifully moved. But then he did it again like we were cattle. We left immediately.

Susprisingly good lunch at the museum. I had the viking dish which was very tasty and with a big piece of meat. Not cheap but very good value for money. I recommend it!

Nice restaurant inside the museum, serving only smørrebrød, but really tasty ones. Service was very friendly and attentive. Recommended!

Friendly service and gluten free smørrebrød option - so good! Great way to break up a visit to the national museum
