The Best Restaurants in Porto, Portugal's Epicurean Gem | Condé Nast Traveler

"Set in an old manor house that spills into a leafy garden with Douro views, this two-Michelin-starred restaurant from Vitor Matos offers two tasting menus—the sensory moments route (highlighted by an Imperial Anjou pigeon with chanterelles, turnips, and truffles) and an organic vegetarian menu featuring São Jorge cheese with baby broccoli and fermented walnuts—making it ideal for alfresco fine dining." - Abigail Malbon, Jessica-Belle Greer

"There are places in the world that, because of their location, exert a special power of attraction and this is definitely the case with Antiqvvm, situated in a leafy park in the centre of Porto, next to the Museu Romântico. This sensation is enhanced by its pleasant garden boasting idyllic views of the banks of the Douro! In its elegant dining rooms, tastefully embellished with classic and contemporary decorative detail, chef Vítor Matos has a fondness for creative seasonal cuisine that places huge emphasis on his ingredients, combining these in a way that aims to enhance the main component of each dish (we particularly enjoyed the blue lobster with Moqueca, and the Silken & Smooth Tofu Mount Fuji, with chilli, citrus fruit, mango and curry). In his own words, the chef, who finds inspiration from his surroundings, “is continually striving to promote the values of cuisine that is cultural, natural, evolving, social and artistic”. He offers just two tasting menus: Sensory Moments (the Imperial Anjou Pigeon was our favourite dish) and Organic (vegetarian)." - Michelin Inspector

A new Two Star restaurant is highlighted in the selection of the MICHELIN Guide Portugal 2024

"Set in the same palace as the Museu Romântico and offering wonderful views of the Douro from its terrace, chef Vitor Matos showcases creativity, technical mastery, and culinary expertise while obsessing over dishes that, though original, remain natural and harmonious, in communion with the finest seasonal products; his proposal invites gourmets to go “around the world” with their palate and seeks to “promote the values of a cultural, natural, evolutionary, social and artistic cuisine”." - Guía MICHELIN

Google
I really enjoyed the ambiance—it’s elegant with stunning views, and the service was attentive and professional. The food, however, didn’t feel as surprising as I’ve experienced at other Michelin-starred restaurants. For example, the splendid afonsino was cooked in a way that stripped away its natural umami, leaving the flavor a bit flat. That said, the dessert was a delightful surprise—beautifully crafted and full of flavor, easily the highlight of the meal. Overall, a pleasant evening thanks to the atmosphere, service, and sweet ending, though the main dishes could have been more memorable.

Google
The dishes were perfectly balanced and the ingredients were outstanding. The wine pairing was also amazing with a lot of portuguese wines and autochthonous grapes. We‘ve been to many Michelin restaurants before but the atmosphere in the Antiqvvm was really relaxed and the staff was super friendly and funny in a good way which was a big plus! Thanks a lot for the beautiful evening!

*** Review from September 2023 *** The restaurant is located at an 18th century building, Museum Romantico. We had an outdoor table with beautiful view of the Douro River. The service was impeccable. But what let us down was the food. Don’t get me wrong, the quality was outstanding. However, we felt that the taste was lacking and some dish was not well balanced. Overall, we got to experience the lovely ambience that the restaurant offerred.

Google
Great food! Liked all dishes except for the curry one ;) Even better than some 3 star restaurants that I visited. The waitress is also very patient and answers all our questions. I hope that the chef will earn the 3rd star soon! Will definitely come back!

Google
Placed on a quiet street that reminds of an antique European castle, huge gate that seems to lead you to a mansion welcomes you, followed by amiable greetings inside. All the dishes are very unique and savory. There was no point during our dining that servers missed to accommodate our needs. We were also given a tour inside the kitchen. This place does not only offer pieces of art on the table - this place really makes sure that visitors have the best culinary experience and bring happy memory with them.

Google
This is a top notch experience in Porto. The grounds themselves are beautiful with a great view of the river. Dinner started with cocktails in the garden. We got the vegetarian and the meat tasting menus, they both had some great signature dishes. On the meat / fish side I really appreciated the food being tasty - adventurous yes, but not so far to comprise the eating experience. Friendly service, and some great wine choices (get the pairing!).

Google
Great presentation of foods and taste, nice garden for a drink prior to the meal, very worth to visit. Only improvement is description of each dish by English which is important part of experience. We know the waitress did her best and she was pleasant, but wish it could be better illustrative.

We came the day after the big Iberian outage. Revenge dining you may say. The sensory moment menus were spectacular, though some dishes were more successful than others IMHO. I personally enjoyed most the umami rich foie gras with tangy rhubarb & slight sweetness. Outstanding. The Claus Porto 'soap' was a very nice touch. Cute. The recommended bubbly worked well with overall - thanks to the sommelier. I deeply appreciated the work behind the plate choices & presentation, right down to the cup & saucer ..though few were a bit over the top for the refined vibe. Service level met expectation .. though there were a bit of rush towards next course. Pricing had factored in the 2-stars status. Loved the overall experience & environment.

Yelp
Organic Tasting Menu This was such a delightful experience!!! This tasting menu has so many courses and so many bonus chef creations at the start and end of the meal. Each dish was just such a flavor shock to me, so unique and fresh and incredible. I've never had such unique creations before. Interestingly, there's not much of a focus on protein dishes in this menu. The interior of this restaurant is beautiful, set in the Crystal Palace Gardens and overlooking a great scenic view. Servers are exception of course. Beautiful bathrooms too ohmy. Definitely deserves its Michelin star!!

Yelp
This place deserves 2 Michelin stars, instead of just 1. Fantastic service, beautiful ambiance and decor, excellent food. They were accommodating of dietary restrictions and offered excellent wine recommendations. Since it was a tasting menu that changes, I won't go through each course. We very much enjoyed each of them! Must try restaurant during your stay in Porto. This was one of our favorites. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Ambiance/service: kind of out of the city so more secluded (was a 30 minute walk from the city center, 8-10 minute drive). The view is nice if it's not too dark out already. The servers were on-it (at your table if you need anything) and very friendly Price: €120 for regular prix fixe menu and £80 for vegetarian which we each got one so we got to try the full selection (spoiler both were delicious). They had wine pairings for an extra cost which we passed on. Food: typical fine dining fancy food presentation which I love, great attention to detail. The taste of the dishes were all very unique and a blend of different flavors. I do think the regular food dishes were slightly more yummy and savory as a lot of the vegetarian dishes were more fresh (ie one was a fancy caprese salad with tomato ice, another was a citrus with tofu blend) though there was one vegetarian seaweed rice risotto that was very good. Both desserts were delicious (in fact, I'd say the vegetarian one which my favorite) All in all, this is a great place to have a special meal. There is lots of attention to detail in the service and food.

Yelp
Out of 5 stars: - service: 5/5 - ambiance: 5/5 - food: 4/5 - price: 5/5 Location and Ambiance: I came here with friends and as people from abroad, we got a bit lost finding the restaurant as it is hidden in a part of the park at the basement of the Romantic Museum. Once we found the restaurant, we saw beautiful terrace views and wonderful scenery. Upon walking in, we noted a quiet ambiance and calming music. We were promptly seated at a table and I can say that the decor matches the scenery seen through the wide windows. Pricing: We ordered the savory moments tasting menu which was 150€. It came with 7 courses. Price is on the higher end for a 1 michelin but they offered a vegetarian menu for ~90€. Overall the prices were fair especially since I think the overall experience is closer to that of a 2 michelin (which is 200+€). Service: Ok now this is the best part! Our waiter was patient in answering our questions and offered excellent service, replacing our utensils and plates in a prompt and professional manner. He operated with the most elegant manner maneuvering smoothly while handling all our plates. He also remembered our request to take out the sea urchin foam. The sommelier was very knowledgeable about the different port wines and flavor profiles. He was able to dive into the aging process and answer any questions we asked. He was attentive and got us great white wines to taste and the perfect caramel accented port wine for dessert. Overall the service is perfection and definitely on a 2+ michelin level. For some background, my party has been to multiple 1,2, and 3 star michelin restaurants in NYC. We were a bit surprised to find out that Antiqvvm is 1 star only. Food: Our savory moments tasting menu was enjoyable. There were some dishes which were a hit (the scallops and steak were my favorite) and others I didn't enjoy as much mainly due to my preference. All the food was presented in a manner that matches the flowers in the garden. Very light, airy and vivid. The dessert was amazing and is a wonderful finisher. Overall food presentation was awesome and I loved the scallops and steak!

Yelp
Like many of the other reviews mentioned, I am surprised why Antiqvvm is only a one star michelin restaurant and not a two star. I was blown away from my experience here and I highly recommend anyone in the area to book a reservation to Antiqvvm. I was able to book a table for 2 about ~1.5 weeks in advance but this was during the ongoing pandemic, so I can only imagine how far in advance you would need to a reservations during normal times. This place is very well hidden down a small alley and into a dirt parking lot. You then venture down a slope that takes you to the front of the restaurant. Upon arrival, I was quickly seated and given a menu. Their wine menu comes on a tablet and if you're interested in cocktails, make sure you ask them for that separate menu. For the food, I've decided on ordering al la carte versus the set menu since I am particularly picky. Due to their great hospitality, we ended up getting just as many items on the tasting menu because we had non stop chief compliments. I think we were easily given 4-5 complimentary dishes, all of which were super delicious and complimented well with my al la carte dishes. By the time I got my main entree, I was beyond full, but continued to eat because it was too good. I'm not going into details of every dish that I've tried here but some of my highlights were... - seaweed butter with bread (I love bread, and the seaweed added an unique taste to the traditional butter) - "discovery" the lamb: superrr tender and flavorful - "Influences of the World" with lobster and topped with mango: you can't even tell that its mango, great for sneaking it mango for those who dislike it. Overall, Antiqvvm is one of the bestttt restaurant I had the pleasure of trying and would highly recommend to anyone in the area!

Yelp
Such great wine lists in Amsterdam and Antiqvvm is no exception. Enjoyed a lovely difficult-to-source orange wine that worked well with every plate. Everyone enjoys the bread at restaurants, but this was exceptional even if they didn't serve it with the butter. Beautiful views but kind of a hike/bike from the main parts of Amsterdam=all the better.

Yelp
A must-try Michelin dining experience in Porto. The restaurant is tucked away in nature with serene outdoor views that make you feel as if you've escaped to your own private villa. The service is superb, with your own designated waiter who explains every detail of each dish and how the city of Porto inspired every nuance. I did the vegetarian lunch tasting ($80) while my husband did the main lunch tasting ($150). The combo was perfect as the main tasting is a bit heavy and the vegetarian sequence resembles a dessert and palate cleanser. The sommelier visits to explain the wine selection, which features wine from the famous Duoro valley. Our dining experience here was a highlight of our trip to Porto.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant, romantic, modern and unique decore. My fiancé and I decided on the sensory moment full tasting menu with the wine pairing. Each dish was better than the last and once again this 1 michelin star restaurant knocked the 2 star restaurants out of the water. Presentation on dish and by our moment creators, a full description of each dish along with a brief history of each paired wine made for an all around incredible experience. The staff was very kind and accommodating to my dietary needs as well as refreshingly knowledgeable about every single ingredient and feeling behind chefs inspiration. I highly recommend anyone traveling to Porto to make this restaurant a top priority!

Yelp
This will go down as one of the best meals of my life. Highly recommend if you're in Porto and don't mind spending on excellent food, service, and ambience.

Yelp
Hands down the best dining experience in my life. Food, service, price and ambience were just exceptional. Highly recommend the Organic vegetarian tasting menu (80 euros/person). Cannot wait them to get Michelin two stars. Lastly, wanted to thank our server, Rafael, who took care of our dining experience at the highest level.

Yelp
Stellar. I've been lucky enough to eat at several Michelin-starred restaurants including the French Laundry, Joel Rubichon and Jean George, and Antiqvvm has the goods. The setting is spectacular, but also spectacularly hidden. Thank god for GPS. As for the food, I had the Organic tasting menu (vegetarian, though I had forgotten that until now because I never felt I was missing anything) with the wine pairing and my date had another tasting menu (non-vegetarian). Each dish was packed with flavor, and a nice mix of tastes. Not a clunker among the 20 dishes between us! The wines were also spectacular and the sommelier really knew his stuff. If you're into fine dining and willing to drop €80-€120 each on dinner, I can't recommend this place too highly. My date and I are shocked that Antiqvvm only has 1 Michelin star though, we thought it was definitely worthy of two.

Yelp
Probably the best restaurant in Porto. I've tasted a degustation menu that transported me to the rich flavors of traditional Portuguese food. The staff was amazingly professional and pleasant. The location absolutely amazing. You have the atmosphere of Douro Valley in the center of Porto. If you are will to pay an extra bucks, indulge yourself!

Yelp
Didn't plan to write this review but I want to commend the chef for the experience I was afforded on Friday evening. As a vegetarian, I don't often get the treat of a tasting menu experience. Sadly, this often precludes my dinner guests from the experience. On Friday, the chef allowed my companion to have the tasting menu, and went above and beyond in serving me. Several of the items on the menu were adapted to be vegetarian so, despite note ordering the tasting menu, I got to follow along during several courses. The food was not what I expected--Portugese that crossed borders. There were some interesting twists, but they did the traditional pieces best. The asparagus risotto is one of the best I have ever had. Thanks again!

Yelp
The best restaurant we ever tried in Porto, with incredibly affordable price! Worth every cents spent. Still can't believe €27.5 lunch includes 3-course meal, including a glass of wine and a cup of coffee! All the dishes are decent, flavorful, balanced, and appreciated to the food materials themselves. Highly recommended!

Yelp
I thought the space was beautiful and the service was good. The dishes are good I went with a vegetarian friend and there are a few suitable choices in the menu. Good value for the experience.

Yelp
The food, wine and staff were all extraordinary!! It is a beautiful restaurant and chef Vitor Matos is extremely talented, attentive and kind. We were so happy and honored to have had an opportunity to have met him! It was overall an unforgettable experience and we can highly recommend anyone going to Antiqvvm.

Yelp
Wonderfully imagined & realized courses, splendid choreography of service. Only the third restaurant in my lifetime to earn my 5-star rating! YELP, this is a 5-Star restaurant, NOT a "wine bar" !

Yelp
We've been to several Michelin one-star restaurants in London & Spain, but this one was off its mark on the day we attended. We're challenging: a fish-eating vegan & a Celiac patron who must avoid gluten and cross-contamination. We found the restaurant hard to find, so look closely at a map and leave time to be lost getting there (signage is poor and it's off a street & parking lot). The setting was magical. The AC inside was only cooling to about 75 degrees for our window table. Food was interesting, delicious, and suitable for the ranking. The local breads were varied and something we didn't come across in our travels. Fish dishes were varied & tasty. On the downside, the service was not up to par. We had to ask numerous times for the water we purchased & finally ended up serving ourselves. We did the full tasting menu & wine pairings, excluding dishes that couldn't be modified to accommodate our dietary needs. The wine pairings were generally very inexpensive (not a problem if good wines!), and also disappointing. The sommelier seemed uninformed & a couple of times interrupted her pouring when plates arrived so we ended up with partial pours & presentations. None of the served wines were on the wine list and several were non-vintage. The wait staff and the chef insisted (incorrectly) that the stout beer included in one dessert did not contain gluten. After some discussion they brought a gluten-free replacement. For us, it was a very unsettling experience. Would definitely recommend that instead of the wine pairings you select your wine from the wine list.
