"This culinary jewel in the Itaim Bibi district is a popular restaurant that delights the palate of regulars and new customers alike. Chef Felipe Schaedler is renowned for bringing the flavours of the Amazon to this bustling metropolis. The exotic decor includes vibrant photos and even a canoe called a “banzeiro” that represents the passage of boats along this legendary river. Here, fire and the grill take centre stage, with some dishes prepared using ancestral techniques that are still used in the northwest Amazon. Without a shadow of a doubt, its classic dishes remain the best option, including “ticada” river sardines and the roasted tambaqui, served in portions that make them perfect for sharing. The choice of dessert is easy: the irresistible “cupuaçu” with chocolate brigadeiro!" - Michelin Inspector

The 35 Essential São Paulo Restaurants

"After a decade running Banzeiro in Manaus — a city at the entrance to the Amazon forest — chef Felipe Schaedler decided it was time to open a branch in São Paulo to bring his unconventional dishes and rainforest ingredients to the city. The space reflects the union of those two places, with elegant furniture and tableware accented by a green wall, tropical plants, and a massive canoe hanging on one wall. Schaedler begins diners with finger food like Amazonian tambaqui fish ribs with sweet-sour sauce, bao stuffed with fried pirarucu (another Amazonian fish), and pickled victoria amazonica (an Amazonian flower) with wild arugula. Check out the chef’s special, a whole tambaqui slow-roasted over coals and served with classic regional side dishes such as tiny, yellow santarém beans and farofa (toasted flour sautéed with mix-ins) made with manioc flour from Uarini." - Rafael Tonon

Banzeiro

"Banzeiro is a breath of fresh air on Sao Paulo’s culinary scene. Chef Felipe Schaedler made the leap to this Brazilian metropolis from Manaus, where he has two other restaurants, in order to popularise the flavours and cooking of the Amazon. In this vibrantly decorated space, discover dishes—many cooked on the grill—that are contemporary, delicate and highly visual. Make sure to try river fish, such as pirarucú and tambaquià, as well as the highly unusual saúva ant with a mandioquinha foam." - Michelin Inspector

Absolutely amazing 👏 Just been in Banzeiro Sao Paulo and had the best experience food of my live! I can't believe I almost missed this restaurant in my holidays. A big thank you to the "Carioca" guy at the John John's store who recommended me this restaurant. I had two starters, the ants 🐜 and a shrimp bao, for the main I went with Amazon piracuru, and for dessert a delicious Macaxeira cheesecake. Would recommend to everyone visiting Brazil. I will keep the experience of the Amazonia food in my heart for many and many years and hope to come back for more soon. A big thank you to all the nice staff, you're amazing 👏 ❤

A very cool concept very well executed. Flavors and ingredients from the Amazon, served in a vibey São Paulo space. I started with the leaf cutter ants on a lemon curd. Salty, crunchy and adventurous start to the evening. I also had the ribs appetizer, sweet and smoky and rich meat flavors. For my main I had the shrimp rice, with huge and delicious 🦐 laid on top of fried rice with pork. Heaven in a bowl 🤤

A friend recommended this Amazon jungle–themed restaurant called Banzeiro São Paulo, and I thought, “Well, I’ve never eaten Amazonian food before, so why not?” 😂 Most of the dishes are made with river fish, which already felt like an adventure. There was one that looked exactly like ribs, but surprise—it was fish. Mind blown. The flavors were… let’s just say interesting. I couldn’t quite tell if it was delicious or confusing, but definitely memorable. Oh, and they literally served a dish with two ants on the plate. Yes, I ate them. Yes, on purpose. Overall, a really cool experience I’d still recommend if you’re ever in São Paulo. Just note that no one there speaks English although featured on Michelin guide—but hey, that’s what Google Translate (and awkward hand gestures) are for. 😅

In this short 3 day trip to São Paulo, this was the best place we tried. The food is creative, inspired, and extremely well executed. I already knew the original Banzeiro in Manaus, so I expected excellence. But it surpassed my expectations.

What a wonderful experience we had this evening trying out Amazonian dishes. The ants on yucca were surprisingly tasty but my favourite has to be the moqueca- frankly the best I have ever tasted ! Service was also amazing.

This was awesome. Amazing Amazonian food that was served to perfection. Get the fish ribs and purée seasoned with ants (it sounds weird but it’s deeeelish). Check out the venom shop across the street

Google
Cozy restaurant with menu highlighting Amazon food - fish and other ingredients sourced directly from the region. Had a yucca puree served with two ants - creamy, delicious and the ants brought an unusual spice flavor. Main course was a fish filet with three ribs - it was moist, mild flavored. Felt the dish could use a bit more fresh flavors, be it from more fruit or some acidity. Chocolate cake for dessert was delicious. Service was very good and professional, as expected of a well-received Sao Paulo restaurant where excellent service is the norm.

We had a great night at Banzeiro with my sister. It’s a good place to try Amazonian cuisine, though we realized it’s not our favorite—not their fault, just personal taste! We had a reservation and arrived after a long day, unaware it was a fancy restaurant. No one mentioned our dress code, but smart casual would feel more fitting. Everyone, from the doorman to the waitstaff, was super nice, making the experience enjoyable. Also, it’s a Michelin-recognized restaurant, though I’m not sure if it has a star or is just on the list.
