The 24 Best Restaurants in Salvador, Brazil | Eater

"Energetic chef Tereza Paim was one of the first to show the world Bahian cuisine could shine in a restaurant setting, not just a family home kitchen. Casa de Tereza in Rio Vermelho serves as a charming temple to the region’s food, with various ecstatically decorated dining rooms named in honor of Bahian cultural symbols, such as the deities of Candomblé. Start with snacks like mix Baiano (a mixture of the chef’s best bites, such as shrimp and feijoada fritters). Definitely don’t miss the moqueca; Paim is known as the local moqueca queen." - Rafael Tonon

Restaurante Casa de Teresa in Salvador offers an exceptional dining experience. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with tasteful decor that combines tradition and elegance. The dining room feels both lively and comfortable, creating the perfect setting for a relaxed meal or a special evening. The food is remarkable. Traditional Bahian dishes are prepared with care and presented beautifully. The moqueca in particular is rich in flavor and perfectly balanced, and the desserts are a highlight as well. Every detail, from the freshness of the ingredients to the presentation of each plate, shows real dedication. This is one of the best places in Salvador to enjoy local cuisine at a very high level.

Great experience. One of the best meals we had in our three week holiday in Brazil. We went two evenings in a row to have the different moquecas. Delicious all the time. Had to wait maybe 30-40 mins for a table, but it was totally worth it. Good service, nice shop downstairs with fairly priced items.

Ordered the seafood moqueca and really enjoyed it—the flavor was rich, fresh seafood and super tasty. The dish itself was great, but the service was a letdown. The server didn’t seem too happy I was there, maybe just not too welcoming toward tourists. Seems like others have had similar experiences, which is a shame. Hopefully that’s something they can improve on, because the food is definitely worth trying.

Good food and good vibes! The food was really good especially the bolinhos de feijoada! We had to pay for piano music - which was a bit funny

A very nice restaurant with a big variety of appetizers and main dishes. The drinks are good also and the place has a full bar. The waiter was a little off when we asked for the wine list twice and still never got it. He never said a thing when he let us order the siri pie on its own and it was also part of my main dish. And the fish was also the same as the other fish we ordered. The Doctor dish was so salty that it was hard to eat. The price is on very high, but overall it was still a nice meal.

The place is amazing and the ambience is good. However, this one waiter named Cardoso is arrogant and impatient. He doesn't deserve the Service Fee, unlike Alexander, he is a good waiter. As an icon of gastronomy in Salvador, Cardoso shouldn’t be rude to his guests.

Our hotel concirege recommended me and my friend this place. The hotel concierge gave us two free apetizer vouchers to be used at this restaurant. At the restaurant, they only served us these two miniscules tapioca and meat cakes. It felt so underwhelming, we didn't even touched it. Don't be there offering free apetizer vouchers if you're gonna skimp on it. We were so hungry and eager to enjoy our meals but got disappointed. I ordered sea food and the food so bland, I couldn't believe I was in Brazil! Being a pricey restaurant close to the ocean I expected fresh fish and shrimp. That was not the case! The ambiance is nice but the food was disappointing. My lesson learned: It's better to take the time to find a low key authentic place than to go for the "high end" one with sad food.

Delicious, well cooked food with incredible flavours and generous portions! A stunning restaurant with great service and super friendly staff. We had Mocqueca with prawns and one with soft shell crab - both incredibly tasty and great condiments. We also had the steak and the leg of lamb witch were cooked to perfection 🤩 We all left feeling like we all had a food experience worth the money! Highly recommend.

Yelp
My wife and I ate at Casa de Tereza on our last night in Salvador. The locale is lovely, the menu attractive, and the food was excellent. It was pretty much the same standard Bahia cuisine we had eaten elsewhere. Service was excellent. Like most Brazilian restaurants, the receipt doesn't detail the items dishes consumed, so I can't give a description except that we started with caipirinhas followed by an appetizer, a main dish and a dessert. We shared all three courses. Don't over order. We had made a reservation but it really didn't seem necessary on the Tuesday night we were there. Tis was the only restaurant we found in Brazil with a full fledged gift shop with both tourist stuff and canned and packaged food prepared by Tereza. Note: Rio Vermelho is an upscale neighborhood with a beach and loads of restaurants/bars maybe 15 minutes south of Barra by Uber..

Yelp
I came back after about a year because I enjoyed the food and dining experience very much. The food and service continues to be very good. This time, the restaurant was super-busy, but it didn't affect the service at all. I was unable to call to make a reservation, but the host was happy to accommodate me immediately. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Salvador for the first time so that they could try some typical dishes of the State of Bahia. The proprietor, Tereza Paim, is a consummate restaurateur and businesswoman. Saúde!

Yelp
I spend 3ish months a year in Salvador Brazil and Casa De Tereza really hits all the Highs. Very localish ambiance in a beautiful old building. A noted chef owner really gets the full range of Bahian Cuisine. Like Salvador in particular the African tradition of their spicy + non spicy offerings (much from the beautiful sea) is sure to please. The service is kind, with a Bahian warmth + calm. (Not NYC). We must be a bit patient. I highly recommend if your just in this exotic city for a short time, want to dive into the local food culture!

Yelp
What a great place for authentic tasty local culinary artisan food. Each dish is well presented with amazing flavor and presentation. We were greeted and seated by a man dressed in a beautiful eyelet white typical Bahian shirt. The menu contained many dishes we were unfamiliar with and had typical Bahian dishes. We ordered suco de mangaba (a local red/yellow fruit with white pulp and small seeds) and a house special mixed drink (cachaça, caju, cloves). Both were delicious and refreshing. We got a free appetizer (tiny tapioca bruschetta with vatapá) which was quite delicious. For our main dish we split the moqueca. It was the best I've ever tasted, with a thick tasty soup of shrimp, garlic, onion, tomato and of course dendê (Palm)oil. We wanted to get dessert but we were so full it would have to wait for another day. This is definitely a must-eat-at if you're ever in Salvador!

Yelp
Great find and excellent food. We ordered the following (5 people) - cashew caipirinhas (diff...a bit of sweet for me) - lime caipirinhas (fantastic) - mushroom and cheese dip - whole grilled fish (best dish!!!) - grilled octopus - beef stew - mixed seafood stew (great) It came with a ton of accompaniments (rice, beans etc) We all left stuffed and satisfied. NOTE - we came here at about 1.30p during carnival and waited for about 75 mins for a table (we drank and socialized while waiting so not an issue as long as you accept it)

Yelp
Casa de Tereza is easily the best of Brazil. The atmosphere, the friendly staff, the food all marvelous! They have so many options. Where do I even begin?! I was looking forward to eating here because it was listed on one of my favorite new fashion travel blog. I had also found out it was a place that my vegan friends thoroughly enjoyed! The portions are more than enough and the prices are reasonable. I got the mocqueca de peixe and it catapulted me out of this world! Included was fish, octopus, oysters, and plantains! (I was really surprised that I couldn't find much plantains in Brazil, but was lucky to find them here.) The base tasted of rich, fresh coconut. The sides of mashed pumpkin and yucca were fantastic! Every space of my stomach was filled to the brim with flavor and delight. Also, you HAAAAAVVEEE to get the bread as an appetizer. The 3-4 oils and sauces that they offered are to die for!! I had a truly unforgettable experience. And the folks who run the business must know, because they are willing to sell you the menu for $100 USD. I think there's a shop in the downstairs that I wish I could have visited.

Yelp
Visited on February 8th. Great restaurant to visit for authentic Brazilian cuisine for tourists. If staying at the Pestana Bahia hotel, it's walking distance. Bobo de camarão and feijoada are staple dishes to order but very large so SHARE! English and Portuguese speaking waiters Enjoy.

Yelp
The food was fantastic and they had someone who spoke english too! That combination of great food and a little assistance in english was nearly impossible to find in Salvador so it was awesome. The food here is really excellent. Drinks were GREAT, and service was super nice. Inside is quite lovely, really neat cute decor, nicely dressed patrons. I ordered Steak which came with pasta. It was prepared well and was very delicious. I had perhaps one of the best caipairinhas I had in Brasil while here as well. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food. It was full of flavor and well prepared. They also have two different pepper salsas which added some spice to an already delicious meal. Unfortunately, I did not save room for dessert. Service was good too, although it was not very busy at the time. They also offer an English menu for those struggling with the local language. It's a really decorative place. The walls and tables are very colorful with various regional paintings on display. Wish I were in town longer so I could come back.

Yelp
Wow! I was super impressed with this place. We went in wanting to try some Bahian food and weren't disappointed. The menu features plenty of choices: appetizers, moquecas, seafood, pastas, and desserts, all either Bahian or made with a Bahian touch. The drink selection provided more of the same. Although we didn't get wine, there did seem to be a decent variety. I opted for a cachaça drink that mixed several fruits I hadn't even heard of. We settled on a seafood moqueca. The menu lists it as a two-person dish and it was more than enough for my wife and I. Everything was delicious and I particularly liked the spicy sauces that come along with the standard salt and oil. We ate so much that we couldn't handle dessert, but we plan to come back again to give it a shot. Definitely a must while you're in Salvador!

Yelp
Great food, less than great service. The moqueca with banana de terra cost R$104. It was small but fed 2 people (would not feed 3 as most moquecas would). But quality was great, with nice sized shrimp. Caipirivodka with cashew fruit, lime and clove was lovely. Inside is beautiful and location is a block from the beach at Rio Vermelho. Drawback was the service, which seemed disorganized. They should have one waiter assigned to a table, because as it is now you just have to wave people down.

Yelp
It's a beautiful restaurant. Muito bonito mermo...The staff is attentive, and the menu varied. However, I can't really recommend this food at these price points. You can have a much tastier (maybe the clay serving dish and table won't be as nice) moqueca at many places in Salvador. I had a moqueca de dorado. That's a slightly weird fish to choose for moqueca, particularly when cut into overly large cubes that do not really absorb the flavor of the stew. Redfish, grouper, robalo would all do much better. It was lacking in flavor, and zest. I really wanted to like this place but I think it's just another too-expensive "folkloric" Bahia ah-ha-ah-ha place where you can spend 1/2 of a worker's salary on a so-so meal. Go to Brotas or Av Suburbana, someone's house, or make it yourself and it'll turn out tastier. Not impressed.

Yelp
So delicious! I had the shrimp soup and it was very good. You can easily share it with one more person. The decor is neat. The service was good.

Yelp
A must go to if you are in Salvador! Great food, great service (they even have English and Spanish versions of the menu). We had the shrimp and fish (dorado) mocequeta which was amazing and good for 2-3 people, the Bahamian salad which was large and served with a great honey-mustard like dressing on the side and homemade vanilla ice cream for desert with what the waiter claims is chocolate sauce on the side but tasted more like raspberry (either way both were great). Total bill 50 US dollars but we left stuffed. Worth the cost.
