Where to Stop on the Ribera y Rueda Wine Trail

"Just northwest of Madrid, in the Castile-Léon region, lies Segovia. Stroll along the city’s ancient streets, where highlights include a well-preserved Roman aqueduct dating back to 50 A.D. and the city’s signature dish, the roast suckling pig (a perfect pairing for full-bodied Tempranillos). Sample this at José María Restaurante, where the wood-fired, oven-roasted pig is incredibly tender and served in ceremonial fashion—carved at the table." - The MICHELIN Guide

Nice location and atmosphere, but not good value for money. We were asked if we would like bread and I asked if they had any olive oil. The bread roll was dry and tasteless and then we were charged (for the first time ever in my many years of dining out!) for the tiny plastic pot of olive oil. A total rip off. My lamb was amazing, but besides the 4 slices of potatoes that's all you get for your €30.00. I can never understand when potatoes are so cheap, why do restaurants give you such a small amount. I suggest you try another one of the restaurants in the plaza. Jose, in response to your reply, I would like to point out that I never mentioned that you were scammers. I was highlighting that I was for the first time in my life (of 61 years) that I was charged for olive oil and overall didn't feel your restaurant was value for money. I still feel €10.80 for 4 buns and oil is a lot. I'm glad I didn't ask for mustard or salt and pepper and wonder how much that would have added to the bill. The point of reviews is to share facts for potential customers and that is what I did.

We have had the most lovely dinner here. We went for salad options as quite late but everything was delicious. Fabulous olive oil. Super friendly service. Great Rosè. Highly recommend.

Hands down the best spot in Segovia. The staff, from ownership to all servers are extremely personable and accommodating. The quality of the food was the best we had during our 2-week trip to various cities in Spain. Everything was so fresh and you can taste the quality of ingredients and products and everything you consume (including the drinks). This is by far, the best restaurant in Segovia!!! I highly recommend and cannot wait to visit back. Ps. Must try cocido de judiones and the cochinillo here A+++

This is another restaurant is elegant, clean, with a great menu and great tapas that come free with drinks. We stopped for drinks because we weren't too hungry but the tapas were amazing and we are glad we went inside. Service is excellent, friendly and professional, the bartender was wonderful and we enjoyed our late night drink with tapas. This restaurant is also located right in the plaza and we returned the next day for breakfast. A great restaurant.

We’re American. In one hour, we received service once, to order drinks. They never stopped by our table further. Other tables got repeated service. The waiter who initially served us seemed very annoyed that we didn’t speak Spanish, and it appears there was some bias at play. If you don’t speak Spanish, don’t go here

Lovely to sit on the plaza on a sunny day with an amazing goat cheese and fruit salad and a glass of white wine. English menu possible with QR code. I would have loved a picture of the salad in its stiff cup, but the waiter cut it up for me before I could get camera out.

Stopped in for a glass of cava. Very friendly an vs attentive service. They offered tapas with the cava, however, we were full from lunch so were unable to enjoy. The waiters were observed walking between tables to ensure that no one needed anything.

The food is pretty good, but my fish was too tough. My husband liked the meat dish and I liked the fact that they had a kids menu. The views of Segovia are wonderful. We paid 100€ for lunch for 3 people and drinks.

Yelp
Another not our first pick in a touristy area. Pick 1 had higher stars, but everyone else went their before us. This place looked like the best of the rest. And we were not displeased. First. You pay for the outdoor location in the Plaza next to main catheter. The food was of good quality and large portions for Europe. English speaking servers. So overall a good second choice pick.

Yelp
Good service and view. Decent food. Had the pork/pig and it was good along with the salad.

Yelp
What a great meal and experience. We were a large-ish party of seven. Some had "fantastic gazpacho," while others had "the best" roasted suckling lamb and roasted pig "ever." I also tried the desserts, very tasty. Oh, they do a 3-course meal that most of the table tried and definitely enjoyed. For me, I wasn't as hungry and tried two appetizers. I had the homemade shrimp pancakes and the warm goatcheese salad (with dressing on the side). Both were fantastic. I had no idea what the pancakes were when I ordered but they turned out to be very good..crunchy, wafer-thin delights. We were all quite surprised by the seaweed garnish. The salad was also quite good. The wheel of goat cheese on top was plentiful. The crunch from the fresh salad and juicy fruits made it so good. I also enjoyed the crunchy, edible shell it all came in. I couldn't get enough! Also, to mention location. It was great, after a long morning of walking, to sit and enjoy the main square. So, good location. Definitely give them a try.

Yelp
Muy mal!! Ordered 3 starters andc2 glasses of wine. Our server( who was nice) brought our salad out which was delicious. Then we sat, and sat and sat. After 45 minutes we needed to go, and we hadn't recieved the rest of our food and they hadn't even refreshed our drinks. Asked for the bill, and they wouldn't take the items off that we had ordered and never recieved. The other staff was extremely rude from the start. Wouldn't recommend.

Yelp
We are back in Spain and needed to see the inside of Alcazar, so back to beautiful Segovia and stopping at José too. In Nov.2018, we had tapas 3 times at José, so now the cochinilla! While prices are comparable to other restaurants in the Plaza major, 4 stars due to a watered down Sangria. Since it is very hot September all over Spain, the sangria is refreshing.

Yelp
So so restaurant for lunch. Another tourist type of restaurant and priced high for what the food is worth. We ordered from the set menu, that came with an appetizer salad or smoked salmon and carrots or sorts and got fries and steak for the entree. It also came with ice cream. The food came cold and didn't have the quality we expected it to have for a sit down restaurant. It was certainly quite quiet that day, though the tapas could've been better if we decided to go that route.
