This family-run restaurant typifies the delicious local food of the Tras os Montes region and the Montesinho Natural Park where rural communities still coexist with wild boar and one of the most important Iberian wolf populations in a stunning landscape of forest, mountains and waterfalls. This is the place to find the best regional food in the area and it is well worth a journey to taste their signature dish, wild boar with chestnuts. The restaurant is run by a husband and wife team, he at the front and she is the chef. The restaurant looks a bit formal when you walk in but the warmth of the owners lights up the dark wood and stuffed trophies of the hunting lodge décor as they go out of the way to make you feel welcome. We began with pungent and tasty wild mushrooms heaped on our plates and cut with orange slices while many around us had huge plates of ham and cheeses, local sausage or terrine. The boar stew was just like Mama would have made it, unctuous with a rich wine and marrow gravy and tender meat you sucked off the bones. The wine list is broad, priced for every wallet and they recommended a hearty red to go with the boar which matched it well. Around us other traditional game dishes such as hare rice and other gamey delights looked really excellent too. Then as soon as our plates were empty a big tureen was brought to the table with an offer of more, who could say no? We could hardly manage our flan dessert, second bottle of wine and eau de vie digestifs! Highly recommended.
