The food was amazing. The service was even better.
We were in Lugo for a few hours to walk around a bit and maybe walk the Camiño path nearby. We saw this place, and had a feeling we just needed to try it, so we ducked in and made a dinner reservation.
Then we got trapped on the mountain in the rain. The only path back was being used for a marathon. Everything was wet, and we were splashed with mud from passing runners and a few mishaps of our own. We cleaned up in the car and were embarrassed to arrive looking a mess. We thought about changing restaurants to somewhere less formal, but we couldn't shake the feeling that we really wanted to try this place, and we're not in Lugo often.
We both expected to get turned away at the door. So we went a little early to the bar to get a feel for whether we could stay. The staff was actually incredibly nice, reassuring us we could eat. Instead of kicking us out (like they would here in Santiago), they made sure we knew there are 2 menus and two restaurants inside. And let us look at both from the bar. Maybe they hoped we would stick with tapas downstairs but we were absolutely famished.
They seated us and gave us incredible treatment regardless. You would swear we were celebrities by the way our waiter ensured everything was perfect the whole meal.
The San Martinho was more of a traditional galician style dish. Perfectly prepared, and full of natural flavor. The lubina was an artistic masterpiece. We had side dishes of patatas fritas, white asapargus, and roasted puerros. The waiter recommended the puerros, with reason.
The combinations of flavors and textures was incredible. And being treated well, despite showing up as adventure hippies is a rare treat in itself. The attached image is the appetizers they brought to the table. 14/10 will be returning the next time I'm in Lugo!
