The 21 Best Restaurants in San José, Costa Rica | Eater

"Local ingredients and the regional cuisines of Costa Rica are the core of the menu at chef Santiago Fernández Benedetto’s restaurant set in an old remodeled house in Barrio Amón. His caldosa, or corn chips with ceviche, features the day’s sustainable catch delicately cooked in Rangpur lime with ginger, avocado, chives, radishes, and daikon. He finishes his version of the street snack with a sardine mayo dressing. His empanadas are stuffed with ricotta cheese, chives, and egg yolks, and the Guanacaste-style arroz guacho, a risotto-like dish of rice and chayote topped with grilled chicken and shrimp." - Bill Esparza

Costa Rica’s Iconic Caldosas Combine Ceviche and Barbecue Chips | Eater

"A contemporary, product-driven restaurant in a remodeled Barrio Amón house that highlights Costa Rican ingredients and traditions, this venue reimagines the caldosa with refined techniques and local seafood. The chef’s iteration has used house-made corn crisps and high-quality proteins such as snook, octopus, and mussel ceviche, translating the playful, street-snack original into a composed tasting-menu bite that honors the dish’s textures while elevating its flavors." - Rafael Tonon

We went for lunch. Arrived around 14.30. Had the three course menu. There were two options for each course so as a couple we were able to taste everything. The service was friendly. The food was creative and delicious. Very reasonable price for three courses & drinks. Only suggestion would be to explain more where the food comes from in Costa Rica and how it’s made.

Restaurante Silvestre is more than just a dinner — it’s an experience. The beautifully restored house sets the perfect atmosphere, and the tasting menu comes with creative storytelling, thoughtful details, and even small gifts that make the evening feel truly special. The highlight for me was the dessert “Footprint on the Moon” — such a memorable and symbolic way to end the meal. While the food itself was good but not outstanding for the price (around €250 for two with drinks), the overall storytelling and atmosphere made it worthwhile. What stood out the most was our female server — she was incredibly warm, attentive, and genuinely made us feel welcome. If you’re looking for a unique, immersive dining experience in San José, I’d definitely recommend Silvestre.

We came for lunch on a Sunday. It was awesome! They had their "standard" 3 course menu, which our friend got, and a "surprise" 7 course menu, which we got. It was amazing! It was a tour across Costa Rica. Every course was delicious. And our server Jacob was wonderful in telling the story behind each dish (in very good English). Definitely would recommend!

I used to think that you need to die in order to get to heaven but apparently it's enough to grab an Uber and come here for a meal!! 😍 Silvestre was my best dining experience in San Jose. The lunch menu provides good value (and the beverage pairing with it is a steal) and was otherworldly good!! I regret, however, not to have come for dinner when there is a longer tasting menu available, too. Service also was fantastic and came straight from the heart, and the beautiful atmosphere complemented the perfect meal. Don't miss it if you ever come to San Jose!

The restaurant is beautiful and exactly what we hoped it would be. We tried the 7 course tasting menu. The food started out very good but we were disappointed with the main which was a pork dish with little taste. Didn’t seem worth the price in the end. The presentation was nice and well thought out but the taste overall was not as we expected. Maybe skip the tasting course and go ala Carte.

What a great experience, if you are in San Jose you have to come and try this place, came for a romantic date with my wife and it was not that busy, perhaps for a Monday. The service was superb and the food and drinks are out of this world, make sure to try the Cloromido Picado cocktail 🍹

I loved my experience here, because, as with most tasting menus, I enjoyed the connection to the chef and the story. I didn't love the taste of every dish, but I did appreciate each one and the concept. My drink was great and I enjoyed the vibe.

We had a mixed experience here for dinner. We did the chefs tasting menu and found some dishes that were tasty and well crafted and others that were bland and tough. The last savory dish, a pork preparation, was very good and we had one dish with a small piece of sausage that was tasty, the lionfish tartare was delicious and a small biscuit was soft and warm. The elements that didn’t work were the corn which was tough and cold and filled with a hear of palm puree which was very bland. The sardine slice was quite fishy with minimal seasoning. We did the Silvestre drink pairing which I would highly recommend. They made different fruit based wines/liquors to pair with the dishes including a blackberry vermouth, pineapple wine and they were all beautifully dry and flavorful. Overall a mixed experience and I did not feel it was a good value given the inconsistency of the dishes and small portions of meat. We did think the story of the dishes and their origin around the country paired with the beautiful Costa Rican wooden map to take home with the beautiful tokens for each course was a creative and memorable souvenir.
