The 38 Best Kuala Lumpur Restaurants | Eater

"Just a stone’s throw down Jalan Alor from Wong Ah Wah, Restoran Meng Kee Grill Fish is a sight to behold. Sweating chefs stand in a row in front of woks, engulfed in clouds of steam and furiously and precisely tossing food into the air. The pans and spatulas clang in a metallic symphony as the chefs turn out crowd favorites like fried rice, oyster omelets, and spreads of fresh seafood. [$$]" - Ian Poh Jin Tze

I walked along this popular tourist street over 10 years ago, and it’s become much more crowded since then! The street is now lined with countless food stalls and restaurants on both sides. We decided to try Meng Kee Grilled Fish, which had limited seating due to its popularity. Everything we ordered—from the Malaysian Hokkien Mee to the Sambal Sotong—was absolutely delicious. The prices were also quite reasonable compared to other parts of Kuala Lumpur. We’ll definitely return the next time we’re in the area.

The atmosphere is perfect. The food is unique. With the view and super friendly client service you can get just sitting here outside, you should stop by and enjoy your Malaysia style of dining at least once.

A good spot for authentic Asian street food! The food was delicious, with a wide range of options to choose from, making it perfect for any craving. The service was fast and efficient, ensuring a smooth dining experience. It’s a simple and basic restaurant, but it has a great vibe, surrounded by both locals and tourists, which adds to the experience. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, but the outdoor area is definitely the best choice.. it’s right on the lively Jalan Alor street, making it the perfect place to soak in the vibrant street food atmosphere. This place is a great choice for anyone looking for bold flavors and an authentic local experience.

So much fun to walk along Jalan Alor again and then sit and watch passers by from an outside perch at Meng Kee. One of the big draws for me here is the chili stingray, which I get EVERY TIME! Just like coming home. You really can't get this dish anywhere outside of southern Southeast Asia, so it is a favorite of mine in KL and at Singapore hawker centers. This restaurant is nice. Lively, flowing, and with a diverse menu that is reasonably priced. I try to get a different accompaniment to my skate with each visit. Enjoy!

We dined here a week ago in the early evening as a pair of Canadian visitors. We chose it randomly without any knowledge. I am happy to convey that the food was, as pictured in the menus and very affordable for the choices. Super enjoyable squid, beef, steamed scallops, and the highlight, butter prawns. The sauce of the butter prawns was so creamy and delicious that we were dipping our squid into it to further appreciate the goodness. Scallops were firm and nicely cooked, not rubbery or overdone. Very garlicky, so ask for a reduction in garlic if not your thing. Tofu and beans were nicely done, and the beef we had was totally soft and tasty. Very reasonable price, cheaper than another restaurant we ate at another night in the same street. Suggest to go with more people in order to try a greater selection of dishes. Service was prompt and accurate, and I definitely have no reservation in recommending the restaurant as a four star culinary experience.

Sea food dishes were cooked well. The cendol, was also good, nothing special. The sizzling beef could use more protein. The service was horrible, with dishes coming really late.

Google
I gave the the service and atmosphere 3 stars because I ordered take away. However… the food!! We loved it. We ordered Grab delivery 2 nights in a row because it’s just too yummy. Portion is quite generous for its price and they really put in effort to shrink wrap the food to prevent tampering and spillage. So well done for taking care of your customers!! Side note* we (2person) were greedy and ordered a lot of food hence the high per person price.

Extremely delicious food and quick and friendly service. We had the dry chilli chicken, morning glory with garlic, silken tofu in soy (can’t remember exact name) and fried rice… all were very, very tasty.

Yelp
One of the larger restaurants located right at the center of Jalan Alor. This place gets busy after 5pm with all the tables filled with hungry customers. The menu has a ton of Malay/Chinese cuisine to choose from. That being said I got the items that seems to be popular on this street: Grilled Stingray: I guess I would describe this as fish but with a firmer texture. But firmer in a good way, not like overcooked calamari which would be chewy. I really enjoyed it and would choose it over regular old fish. Char Kway Teow: not the best I've had in KL but solid. I'd probably try a different noodle dish or fried rice just to see how it is if I go back. Service was efficient and friendly. They know what they are doing on Jalan Alor when it comes to feeding the masses and Meng Kee Grill Fish is no different. Overall a good spot to eat.

Yelp
Out of many half-indoor half-outdoor restaurants/stalls on Jalan Alor, Meng Kee was the only one I saw that had both the Chinese dish salted egg crab AND the Malaysian dish kangkung (water spinach) with belacan (shrimp paste). It also had the added benefit of not having really aggressive hawkers that blocked my path with their giant menus. Another benefit, which I did not realize until I sat down, was that it had amazing starfruit juice, which I proceeded to order three glasses of because they were only MYR 5 each. The food was... pretty good. I love eating crab because the difficulty makes the resulting pop in the mouth more satisfying. So I enjoyed getting my fingers all yolky getting this meat out. But the crab meat taken on its own just didn't taste all that fresh. (Well, the legs didn't. The body did. Like they were from different animals. Weird.) It really just served as a vehicle for the sauce. The kangkung was an enormous portion, which could have been tenderer with a sauce that tasted more than vaguely like dried shrimp and garlic. My favorite part of the experience was, oddly, the fantastic starfruit juices and getting to watch the sun go down on the buildings in KLCC in the distance.

Yelp
This restaurant has become our go to restaurant in Jalan Alor. The staff are so friendly and helpful, the service is quick and the food is great. Seafood is the main focus here for me. BBQ stingray or the Chicken Fish (type of unicornfish) which is a fish with a chicken texture and both are delicious. Also try the Sotong in Salted Egg. (Sotong is Squid) There are many other seafood options here as well, other types of fish cooked in many different ways, prawns, sotong (squid), shellfish including oysters, La La (type of cockle), Razer Clams and Crab. Chicken, Pork, Beef and Vegetables are also on the menu. My wife and I have tried a vast majority of items from there extensive menu and nothing has disappointed including the frogs legs. Beer is also available along with other non alcoholic beverages. This is a must try, you will definitely find something here that will excite you appetite.

Yelp
Ordinary seafood dishes. Prices are good but food is ok, just ok. If you are not a big fan of delicious seafood and Malaysian Chinese cuisines. Filling up your stomach is not a problem. Lol

Yelp
On a street full of hawkers whose offerings appear to vary little, Meng Kee stands out with a robust menu. And many items have price ranges based on how much you want. It basically comes down to small, medium and large portions. I settled on mediums for squid and stingray during a recent visit. Those along with some rice were plenty for a solid meal. Both were very good. The stingray was a little spicier than expected, but that's the style in Malaysia. The starfruit juice was excellent, as well. However, the hawkers are so focused on pulling in new customers that they sometimes forget about people who are currently eating. So you have to be a little aggressive getting the attention of staff once all of your order has been delivered. But it was rather quick, considering how many diners there are.
