The 38 Best Kuala Lumpur Restaurants | Eater

"Just a stone’s throw down Jalan Alor from Wong Ah Wah, Restoran Meng Kee Grill Fish is a sight to behold. Sweating chefs stand in a row in front of woks, engulfed in clouds of steam and furiously and precisely tossing food into the air. The pans and spatulas clang in a metallic symphony as the chefs turn out crowd favorites like fried rice, oyster omelets, and spreads of fresh seafood. [$$]" - Ian Poh Jin Tze

They are located along the busy jalan alor food street. They run a brisk business at almost full house capacity. I ordered their grilled fish portugese styled. What came was quite different from the picture in their menu..but it was pleasantly flavourful..topped w spicy sauce and some sliced ladyfingers.. Delightful bursting w flavour.. Reasonably priced too ! Recommended

Restoran Meng Kee on Jalan Alor, Kuala Lumpur is known as a long-standing establishment that has grown along with Jalan Alor’s famous street food hub. With all restaurants along Jalan Alor peddling almost the same cuisines like Cantonese Tzi Char, Satay and Grilled Chicken Wings, everyone is spoilt for choice but Meng Kee comes highly recommended. Highly recommended items include Salted Egg Squid (Sotong): Squid is fried with a rich and creamy salted egg sauce. Fried Oyster Omelette (Hor Chien): A crispy omelette filled with fresh, savory oysters. Butter Prawns: Large, juicy prawns cooked in a creamy butter sauce.

We had the grilled chicken-fish and 2 sides. Stirfried pak choy with garlic. Not spicy. And, stirfried okra with chili peppers. Medium spicy. You can order the vegetables by size. We chose “small” and it was large enough for 2. The fish is also priced by size. We were told the “small” and “medium” were sold out, so we had to pick between “large” and “extra large.” I am not sure if they really had none left or if they assumed we were just tourists. The pak choy was very tasty, as was the okra. I had never tried chicken-fish before. It had larger bones and was easy to eat. The flavour was mild; somewhat like chicken. One side was grilled plain and the other with chilli peppers. It is a good choice for beginners or for those who dislike fish with small bones. Prices exclude 6% service tax. You can pay by cash or card. Mastercard is accepted. The main downside is the space. It is extremely tight, with tables close together and staff shouting to one another. It gets very loud and hectic, and you need to keep an eye out to avoid being bumped. Overall, the food was good, but the atmosphere was a bit too chaotic for me.

Rating it 5 stars cause it was our first night at KL and we had a great time here. The food was delicious and suitable for groups. Teh ice was very good. The fish was also exceptional. All that we ordered were delicious. Fried rice were also good. They have a lot of seating so no waiting. The menu also has a lot of variety so it will fit everyone's palette.

Restoran Meng Lee is definitely worth a visit! The oyster egg is super delicious and full of flavor. The HK-style steamed fish is very fresh with bouncy, tender meat that’s cooked just right. Their Hokkien mee is one of the highlights – rich, flavorful, and very satisfying. The marmite chicken is also really tasty, with a nice balance of savory and sweet. Overall, the dishes are cooked with great quality and consistency, and the portions are generous. A great spot to enjoy comforting, authentic dishes with family and friends.

In this véry busy street this restaurant is a must visit! The food is served fresh ánd quick, by one of the 50 (!) staffmembers. Have visited Meng Kee many times after my friend Chris took me there years ago. Now every time I’m in KL this is a must! The street is noisy but don’t let that stop you from eating here. My favourites are the vongole with garlic and the buttered shrimp.

Everything we ordered was amazing! The grilled fish is definitely a must-try, and the prawns were so fresh. Service was lovely too — friendly and welcoming, with a kind auntie who made us feel right at home. Great food, great vibes — highly recommend in KL! 🤍🩵💛

Google
While places like this often get labeled as tourist traps but Meng Kee has real substance. The food genuinely delivers - grilled seafood(stingray and fish particularly) is perfectly grilled and full of bold sambal smoky flavour. Apart from these, the variety of dishes is equally impressive as well - with many options that go beyond the usual tourist fare.

Yelp
One of the larger restaurants located right at the center of Jalan Alor. This place gets busy after 5pm with all the tables filled with hungry customers. The menu has a ton of Malay/Chinese cuisine to choose from. That being said I got the items that seems to be popular on this street: Grilled Stingray: I guess I would describe this as fish but with a firmer texture. But firmer in a good way, not like overcooked calamari which would be chewy. I really enjoyed it and would choose it over regular old fish. Char Kway Teow: not the best I've had in KL but solid. I'd probably try a different noodle dish or fried rice just to see how it is if I go back. Service was efficient and friendly. They know what they are doing on Jalan Alor when it comes to feeding the masses and Meng Kee Grill Fish is no different. Overall a good spot to eat.

Yelp
Out of many half-indoor half-outdoor restaurants/stalls on Jalan Alor, Meng Kee was the only one I saw that had both the Chinese dish salted egg crab AND the Malaysian dish kangkung (water spinach) with belacan (shrimp paste). It also had the added benefit of not having really aggressive hawkers that blocked my path with their giant menus. Another benefit, which I did not realize until I sat down, was that it had amazing starfruit juice, which I proceeded to order three glasses of because they were only MYR 5 each. The food was... pretty good. I love eating crab because the difficulty makes the resulting pop in the mouth more satisfying. So I enjoyed getting my fingers all yolky getting this meat out. But the crab meat taken on its own just didn't taste all that fresh. (Well, the legs didn't. The body did. Like they were from different animals. Weird.) It really just served as a vehicle for the sauce. The kangkung was an enormous portion, which could have been tenderer with a sauce that tasted more than vaguely like dried shrimp and garlic. My favorite part of the experience was, oddly, the fantastic starfruit juices and getting to watch the sun go down on the buildings in KLCC in the distance.

Yelp
This restaurant has become our go to restaurant in Jalan Alor. The staff are so friendly and helpful, the service is quick and the food is great. Seafood is the main focus here for me. BBQ stingray or the Chicken Fish (type of unicornfish) which is a fish with a chicken texture and both are delicious. Also try the Sotong in Salted Egg. (Sotong is Squid) There are many other seafood options here as well, other types of fish cooked in many different ways, prawns, sotong (squid), shellfish including oysters, La La (type of cockle), Razer Clams and Crab. Chicken, Pork, Beef and Vegetables are also on the menu. My wife and I have tried a vast majority of items from there extensive menu and nothing has disappointed including the frogs legs. Beer is also available along with other non alcoholic beverages. This is a must try, you will definitely find something here that will excite you appetite.

Yelp
Ordinary seafood dishes. Prices are good but food is ok, just ok. If you are not a big fan of delicious seafood and Malaysian Chinese cuisines. Filling up your stomach is not a problem. Lol

Yelp
On a street full of hawkers whose offerings appear to vary little, Meng Kee stands out with a robust menu. And many items have price ranges based on how much you want. It basically comes down to small, medium and large portions. I settled on mediums for squid and stingray during a recent visit. Those along with some rice were plenty for a solid meal. Both were very good. The stingray was a little spicier than expected, but that's the style in Malaysia. The starfruit juice was excellent, as well. However, the hawkers are so focused on pulling in new customers that they sometimes forget about people who are currently eating. So you have to be a little aggressive getting the attention of staff once all of your order has been delivered. But it was rather quick, considering how many diners there are.
