The Best Persian Restaurants in Los Angeles, According to Eater’s Local Dining Expert | Eater LA

"Whether it’s Norooz (Persian New Year) or a regular Tuesday, there is no better place to buy traditional Persian confections than at Rex Bakery. The naan-e nokhodchi, clover-shaped chickpea cookies with cardamom, melts in one’s mouth with its powdery consistency. The zoolbia, a crispy funnel cake-shaped pastry, and bamieh, a doughy oval-shaped pastry, are both doused in rosewater and saffron syrup." - Melody Barooni

Best Persian New Year Foods in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"I discovered a family-operated bakery on Sawtelle just south of Santa Monica Boulevard that has been making Persian baked goods for almost 20 years, offering traditional nokhodchi and khoshkar cardamom cookies as well as cream puffs; the shop is cash-only." - Mona Holmes

Rex Bakery Review - West LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Rex Bakery on Sawtelle is a tiny, family-run bakery with excellent homemade desserts and baked goods. Their signature items are cream puffs, which come out flakey and fluffy, and the kind of pastry you’re required to eat at least three of in one sitting. And yes, we have hard personal data on that last part. All that said, our favorite thing behind the case is the Shirini Napelini. Layers of flaky pastry are filled with a tart homemade cream and topped with a slightly sweet whipped cream. It’s crunchy, sour, and exceptionally well-balanced. Grab a box of nan-e nokhodchi, bite-size chickpea cookies with cardamom, and you’ve got yourself an excellent dessert haul. Cash only." - Brant Cox

I always come for the baklava when I’m in the area, haven’t had anything like this. My favorite ❤️

Audrey Blaya

Google
Would give them less than one star if I could. There were live and dead roaches in the bakery and when I mentioned it to the staff they were rude and dismissive. Absolutely DISGUSTING!!!!!

International Enterprise

Google
The Persian pastry tasted ok but way overpriced

Google
This is a Persian bakery. Meaning, the sugar profile for each item is different than a traditional French pastry shop. It's essentially not as sweet. The cream puffs are light and quite good, as are the napoleons - again much less sugar, but good.

This Persian Bakeries place is one of the best bakery, Persian dessert, and cake places in southern California. I drove from Palos Verdes every time to shop there. They are the taste of Persia, and I had the pleasure of shopping there a few times. All Persian cakes and pastries were delicious and prepared with the best quality ingredients. My family and I enjoyed every time we had a large noone Khameie. The owner and staff were amiable and professional, with huge smiles, which made my day with that kind of pleasant attitude and sweet, yummy pastries.

One of my clients found out that I love Baklava. She brought some for me from your Bakery. It's absolutely delicious!! The flavor is so...so....good!! Never had Baklava that tastes this good!!

Google
What a wonderful surprise! We visited this Persian bakery with our three little kids. The lady behind the counter was very helpful and understanding. The pastries are outstanding, delicious and reasonably priced. This is worth a stop if you are looking to be adventurous and try something other than what Starbucks sells. For the local Persians this seems like the place to come and get your homemade pastries. We'll be back!

Google
The quality of the sweets are not high and some of the items are crazy pricey! Like baklava which weren't delicious was 18$ for a small box! Some of the sweets we got had too much cream and caramel on them that would make you not enjoy it! That's why I gave three starts.

Yelp
Excellent authentic persian pastries. I bought the cream puffs. They have them in various sizes which was a cool add on. Service isnt the greatest but it adds to the authenticity :) Enjoy,

Yelp
Cream puffs from Rex are unmatchable. The cream is so fresh and real tasting unlike other places that taste nondairy. Cash only.

Yelp
I give them five stars for their bake goods. However, I didn't like the fact that they accept only cash and do not enter anything in their register and prices are not listed! I think she charges whatever she wants and does not report her income! This was my first visit after many year and most likely won't go there again!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely great Persian snacks and sweets. Friendly staff, very knowledgeable about their sweets and what might help your cravings!

RR R.

Yelp
Very unfriendly and unhelpful woman who also sold us stale cookies to our little kids. Pricey for not very good tasting pastries. Wish we never went inside to try.

Vivo V.

Yelp
Bought Baklava that was stale and awful for $20 a box - Had to demand receipt which annoyed the lady that had to write it up.

Yelp
They sold me expired food and when I backed to them they wouldn't accept their fault

Yelp
I rarely write reviews But never had to deal with such a rude staff in any stores. First of all I called and asked couple of questions and the lady said she won't answer my questions unless I drive to the store ‍ We are in 2021 After I had to drive there I couldn't get their attention because they were talking among each other gossiping . Waste of my time
google avatar

Afshin S.

Yelp
This lady overcharges people. She does not even use a cash register to ring people up she uses a calculator instead so she can not give you a receipt. She does not accept credit cards either cause credit card companies canceled her account. There are no prices on the items either. Go to Star bakery on the corner on Santa Monica Blvd and Barry Avenue instead .

Yelp
Best cream puffs in Cali! But I just showed up at 5:35 and they were closed. Why do the hours show 6pm?!
google avatar

Sara A.

Yelp
These are probably the best Persian cream puffs I've found. They are not super sweet, but have the Persian flare of rose water that is not too strong. I like the larger cream puff to share because it has more of a cream to bread ratio, but the smaller cream puffs are good as well. The large one is equivalent to ~3-4 smaller ones, so you can share it with a small group. I've used this as a makeshift cake a few times by sticking a candle in it too! They have no indoor or outdoor seating. They do have a couple free parking spots on the side of the building if you are picking something up.

Yelp
I wasn't sure about 2 or 3 stars , 2.5 would be perfect Pro: Cream Puffs are really good & tasty Con: Other type of pastries are really on average scale & not as good as cream puffs Kind of overpriced for quality & packaging It's 2021 & this store is cash only
google avatar

Yelp
I wanted something sweet while my son skated I decided to walk to this bakery, ill give it 3 stars The Baklava is super sweet its not crispy it has a different flavor than most that I have tried, this box was $12
google avatar

Payam G.

Yelp
The only bakery that I have ever been to that they only want cash otherwise they will not sell to you. It's unheard of. Very poor management and the way they run their business. So if you don't have cash, don't waste your time going there, they will not sell to you.
google avatar

Afsaneh M.

Yelp
The most amazing cream puffs and eclairs in town. Always fresh with a perfect hint of sweetness. The Zoolbia and Bamieh are an extra treat! Just remember cash only.
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely horrible customer service , extremely overpriced items and they do not accept Credit cards, cash only (it's 2020) I won't be going back !!

Yelp
Rex has been my favorite Persian bakery since I moved to LA. And it is my son's favorite now. One of the best Persian Bakeries in town. I love most of their pastries from cream puffs, Roulette, cake yazdi (muffins), cookies.. Also, the shole zard and halva is the best in town.
google avatar

Niki n.

Yelp
Cream puff heaven. No one else can make them like Rex. A little pricey but one of a kind. You will not be disappointed.

fred F.

Yelp
Very rude, unprofessional. Bought $80 worth of sweets One of Baklava smell like old oil , she just take package and says smell fine to me and that is not from her bakery and she sells other bakery goods too . I said but even you don't make it you are responsible of quality of what you give to customer and she ignored with attitude , I left $10 sweet in the store and with no refund or exchange left .. rest of sweets are average and expensive If you want to taste average smelly sweet in your mouth and feel horrible in head then this the right store for you to go !

S R.

Yelp
Wonderful quiet place. Terrific little tiny mouth-popper cookie tastes. Love this place. It's a little pricey and CASH ONLY.
google avatar

Yelp
We bought "Cake Yazdi" and "Roulette". Cake yazdi = 0 star Roulette = 4 star Sales Person = 3 star
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
Having heard that Rex Bakery has reshteh khoshkar was a welcome surprise. On a recent trip to LA I purchased 5 boxes of reshteh khoshkar for $80 total. These are stuffed treats that come frozen and you have to fry them on your own. Surprisingly the box I saved for myself had 8 proper reshteh khoshkar and 8 that were completely empty of the filling. Just the rice flour wrapping. These sweets get stuffed and folded over, it is impossible to accidentally forget that there is no filling when folding them up. It is very disheartening that this business can be so dishonest and fill half a box with "fluff" just to fill the box and meet the weight. I would not recommend this bakery if this is how they plan to treat customers.

Homa M.

Yelp
fabulous Iranian pastry. consistently fresh, delicious and authentic. Excellent service.
google avatar

Nadeem P.

Yelp
Horrible bakery. Much better options. Customer service is never good. If you don't speak Farsi, go elsewhere because they don't want to serve you.
google avatar

Jasmine N.

Yelp
Very overpriced and unwelcoming, a poor representation of Persian sweets and Persian culture :(
google avatar

Aedan B.

Yelp
I used to go to this bakery a few years back n I remember such good persian pastries but now is so expensive I might wait years before returning again. Pastry is OK...but not worth $12 a tiny box!
google avatar

Johnny Drama D.

Yelp
Thanks for ruining my Easter. Bought a paska which is a traditional cake for Easter. To my surprise as I'm cutting it this morning it's moldy. Never again
google avatar

Diego A.

Yelp
One of the best and oldest Persian Bakeries in town. The owner is such a nice lady, and she knows her baking, you can't go wrong with your orders here. I just wish they had cakes ready to pick up and not have to make orders and leave deposit ahead of time, little outdated management perhaps beed some new blood to keep them updated, but still definitely worth it. The people in the Persian community know they are the Best in the West when it comes to persian and french pastries.
google avatar

Newsha M.

Yelp
The cookies and cakes are great. I gave them 3 starts just because they said the cookies i got were 12 dollars per pound when the stores that sell their products charge 9 dollars per pound. I didnt like this.
google avatar

Sephora M.

Yelp
All you have to do is walk into the back to realize how incredibly disgusting and dirty this place is. I saw utensils on the floor, these are items they use to handle food that are in the floor. Please for the sake of your health and anyone you'd even consider giving their baked dishes to don't come here. All you have to do look at their kitchen and bathroom and understand what I'm writing. It's third world dirty. No soap in the bathroom....that means the workers are baking with dirty, feces infested, urine covered hands. If you choose to eat here good luck hope you have health insurance
google avatar

Nina N.

Yelp
They have literally the BEST cream puffs, one thing I'm not a fan of is they don't except credit cards, which is really odd for any business these days. I've tried the Barbari as well and it was not that great, but when it comes to the pastries you can't really go wrong
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
I could not help it... the smell of fresh baked goods from Rex Bakery lured me in! Mike L and I checked out the review on Yelp and decided to give this place a try! Apparently they are known for their cream puffs so I got one of those... despite Mike L telling me that there was Beard Papa nearby. The pastries here are sold by weight so the cream puff came out to $1. The cream puff was okay, the cream was thick. If I were to describe it, I would say similar to the icing on a cake. This store sells a ton of different pastries. There's Baklava, but several versions of it. They also sell sugar free cookies!

Yelp
Drove by this place hundreds of times, finally decided to add another Persian/Iranian establishment to yelp.com Woot woot. So finding parking was a ____ I circled the block a few times and finally saw a parking spot become available and snatched it. I jay walked... Whatever, I could just hear my nonna yelling at me, telling me I should have walked a whole two blocks out of the way to an actual cross walk, cross the street, then walk back almost making a complete circle, just to be safe... Shoot, not in these heels! Nonna would be so proud, this I know. My dear friend Cyrus and I weren't even greeted by the two ladies working here when we walked in. One of the other ladies was bickering to the other about where so had been, I'm assuming so took to long of a break. I can relate to L K. review - 1 star While the lady did answer my questions she was rude about doing so... - 1 star I asked for the Asal cookies, and she pointed out something else I wasn't for familiar with. My friend said she stared me down when I browsed around. - 1 star I asked her about the cream puffs telling her that the owners at Cafe Glace in Westwood told me they get they cream puff from Rex Bakery another reason I had meant to stop by, she was extremely unenthusiastic that another business sent her business. WTF? - 1 star When I asked for a cream puff she asked if I wanted a small or a large. When saying large she made her hands about 12 inches apart... WTH?... Why would she do that? Don't you want to sell cream puffs? LOL I bought the pre-packaged Sohan, basically almond brittle sprinkled with crushed pistachios... Worth a try, if your a brittle fan! They had many light colored and many dark Sohan batches... Dark being well overcooked and light very undercooked and not enough just right sohan. I've been eating this delicious brittle since I was a child and very familiar with how it's made and should taste. I had to dig a little, while being gawked at for being so picky - .5 star I also got the chickpea cookies... My friend Cy was so surprised by the horrible service that is all he spoke about for the following hour. The Sohan was good as well as the cookies. +2 stars Cyrus hated the cream puff, however loves Cafe Glace, which is odd as Rex makes they're cream puffs... Which means service means a lot to him.

Yelp
Be careful with these people. Bought several items with nuts in them. The top layer is fine but then old stale items are packed underneath. Very unprofessional and dishonest. Happened on three items so it is not an isolated occurrence. Will not shop there again.

Yelp
This place smells so good. Actually Rex Bajery smells delightfully floral and delicious at the same time like a fresh nectarine had a baby with a puff pastry and a humming bird popped out. I didn't see anything moldy like the other reviews said. Everything was definitely fresh and piled high to the sky. There were plenty of delicious looking ghotabs. Baked and deep fried. I took a box of the baked. They look like seashells of a sort and they are full of an almond marzipani like paste and have a perfectly baked outer pastry shell that's been brushed with butter to make it a deep golden crust. I can't stop eating the ghotabs and we must have finished them within a couple days. It was the holidays and also well worth the calorie count. I also bought about a dozen puff pastries and those were so fresh and delectable. What I really like about Rex's version of the puff pastry and it might also be a Persian thing but that the cream inside is not egg based or custardy it's more of a light whipped cream that's not too sweet also the pastry itself it perfectly hand crafted light and airy. So you get the crust like outer layer that compliments the light white cream in the middle. It's really good. I went to Rex Bakery on Christmas Eve and I was quite surprised that they were open. I was greeted by a very pleasant Persian lady who surprisingly didn't mind me bringing my pup inside and it looked like she was getting her bake on in the back of the store. They must sell to many of the local markets because the pastries are stacked high in clear plastic boxes on a table and around the store. I can't wait to go back and try the nokhodie's which are little lucky charm shaped treats made out of cardamom and chickpeas.

Yelp
Everyone loves the sweets here. My favorites are the cream puffs, napoleons, and the zoolubias. Yum!!! My dream afternoon would be to just sip chai and eat persian pastries from here while watching TV.

Ben W.

Yelp
Called to ask for an item and when I asked how much it was they refused to tell me and said I d to come in for pricing. This is a dessert, not a car. No thanks!!!

Yelp
I put a special order to Rex bakery for sweets for my grand fathers funeral and I was more than dissatisfied. What they promised and what they delivered was insanely different. First off, I picked up my zoolbia bamiye the day before the funeral at 4 pm and by the day of the funeral at 10 am all of them were dry and and had gone bad even though I hadn't opened the bakery's seal. They had made a big deal about how they're going to make them fresh for my special order but they were bad less than 24 hours after I ordered them. Aside from that, the promised to create small zoolbia which I paid extra for that special order and what they delivered was just as big as their normal ones and not what I was promised. Putting aside all the issues presented with the actual order, when I asked to speak to the manager the lady behind the counter said I can't speak to the owner/manager and there was nothing they could do. She was insanely rude and their customer service sucks. If you're even thinking of ordering from them, trust me find another bakery and save yourself time instead of speaking to the rude and disrespectful staff at Rex who deliver less than mediocre sweets that go bad overnight.

Yelp
I wanted to give them 5 stars reviews but I gave them 4 stars for 2 things : first that lady worked there gave me stress she asked questions so fast : what do u need ? How much do u need ? What els do u need ? And she never smiled to customer then she wasn't friendly . 2end they didn't accept the credit cart if u don't have cash chose other bakery But they have best zolbia and bamie in la county and even other cookies
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
Walked in, got some almond cookie brittle, and I think the owner took advantage of us by telling us a small box was 8 bucks. Maybe it was because we weren't Persian. Don't come here. Items do not have price tags on them so the owner can arbitrarily price them.

Yelp
I discovered Rex Bakery due to Emily S. hypersensitive nose for baked goods. If there were ever a zombie apocalypse in LA, Emily S. may be a good person to team up with to help find remaining food in the city. She can be like the German Shepherd in Will Smith's I Am Legend. I didn't even see this bakery until Emily said, "What is that I smell?!? It smells so good! I am HUNGRY!" I looked around and finally saw the nondescript storefront. She busted out her iPhone 4 to check out the reviews and said, "We must go in because not many people reviewed this place!" So we went in and the first thing I thought was that the place was somewhat run down and plain. I asked the two elderly people behind the counter what kind of bakery and baked goods place this was, and the older woman said, "This is a Persian bakery." So being a Persian bakery, it made sense that they had a lot of baklava choices and other Persian baked goods. They also have several French inspired baked goods as well. I decided to order a SUPER HUGE cream puff and a chocolate eclair. I wanted to compare the cream puff to Beard Papa's and the eclair to the ones from Bottega Louie. Overall, they were just okay in that they tasted something similar you can get from the grocery store. The cream puff pastry wasn't as crispy as what you would get from Beard Papas. It's most likely due to the cream filling (which is more like whipped cream than a custard) making the pastry a little moist and soggy. Beard Papas pastry is typically crunchier b/c they fill it with custard when you order the product, so the custard doesn't have time to make the pastry soggy. The eclair pastry was similar as well. A little soggy to the bite. You can get a comparable tasting product from the freezer section of Trader Joe's. Things are priced by ounce with it being $1 for 1 ounces. My two products were about 4.6 ounces so I paid $4.60 for the two products. As a mom and pop store, I suggest people visit it since a lot of our small businesses are being taken over by chains.
google avatar

Mitra P.

Yelp
This is one of the best Persian Bakery in LA. The shop doesn't look fancy or it's even below average but don't worry they are clean and have high quality pastry and cookies. My favorites are Persian roulette and cream puff :) And also they only take cash$.
google avatar

Farnoosh A.

Yelp
One of the better Persian bakeries in westwood area. The zoolbia and bamiyeh are always fresh. The cream puffs and Napoleons are always yummy too. The prices are reasonable. They could work on the interior a bit more its kind of messy, but the quality is good so meh.
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
The pastries here are really good - I've been several times. The downsides are the price and customer service. The staff generally doesn't acknowledge customers when they come in unless they personally know you, in which case they will strike up a conversation with that person and ignore anyone else. It makes me feel uneasy that there aren't price tags on anything and you have to ask how much something is, and the last time I went in, the box of desserts was $3 more than the previous time I bought it. The pastries average $1 for each tiny piece, but worth it if you like good dessert!
google avatar

Shagha A.

Yelp
This is one of the best Persian bakery. They always offer fresh and delicious goody. Love it

Yelp
I just called them to ask a specific cookie's price but the owner was so mean, before her i called several places & all of them answered my question very nice but this person was answer me so bad, i want to buy around20 pounds & I have to shop around. Thanks

Yelp
I love Rex bakery We always get their cream puffs It's delicious and light It's always fresh
