"Basalt formations have eroded over time to form Vík's eerie black-sand beaches. The combination of dark sand and strange geological features make this area hauntingly beautiful and unforgettable." - Travel + Leisure Editors
The black volcanic sand gives the whole beach a surreal, otherworldly vibe. And the basalt cliffs: they look like something straight out of The Fifth Element. It’s wild, cinematic, and absolutely unforgettable.

Very cool location. Especially on a clear day. The waves here are HUGE. I enjoyed watching people turn their backs to the waves to take selfies and end up wet. Parking and bathrooms can be difficult. Large number of buses coming through all day.

Lovely area! The basalt rocks looked very unique.
The waves here can be very high and strong and unexpected, so visitors were advised not to get too close to the sea and to be wary.

Another black sand beach with basalt rocks, dangerous sneaker waves 😵 and blustery winds 💨. Parents with small children please be very observant while enjoying the sights of this remarkable beach.

It’s an awesome place to visit. The rock formations are incredible. Just remember to bring a jacket because it’s quite windy. The views are breathtaking!

The parking is 1000ISK via Parka. The beach is good but there are hundreds of black beaches in Iceland, but only this one is so overcrowded for no reason. Also, please pay attention on the danger flags before entering the beach. High tides are no joke.

A beautiful black beach with striking rock formations and a cave. The spot is easily accessible, with a self-service parking lot right next to it. Very few people in the morning. The beach is great for a short walk. A visit takes anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on how much you want to enjoy this place.

if you are visiting anything in this area this is where you need to go!
the stones and the black sand are very interesting, just like the cliffs and rocks surrounding them. we saw puffins and seagulls nesting there.
the waves there are extremely dangerous so stay far from the water!
