20 Best Beaches in Europe

"A striking black-sand beach formed by eroded basalt with clusters of hexagonal rock columns and sharp sea stacks jutting from the waves. The North Atlantic’s rough, frigid waters make swimming unsafe—sudden, powerful sneaker waves are a real hazard—but the haunting geological scenery is essential viewing on an Iceland itinerary." - Lila Harron Battis Lila Harron Battis Lila Harron Battis is a writer and editor. Iceland Itineraries: From 1 Weekend to 1 Month (Updated 2025)

"I strolled the otherworldly Reynisfjara black sand beach at sunrise and loved the dramatic offshore rock formations; from the cliffs above there are short hikes with amazing views, and from May through August you might even spot puffins." - Matthew Kepnes

The black volcanic sand gives the whole beach a surreal, otherworldly vibe. And the basalt cliffs: they look like something straight out of The Fifth Element. It’s wild, cinematic, and absolutely unforgettable.

Quite impressive scenic black sand beach, but I only spent a few minutes there, because it was way too crowded during the day. Also, mind the deadly sneaker waves!!

Beach and adjoining cliff have been featured in several shows over the years. Very popular spot so expect to be in a crowd. Paid parking lot next to the restaurant. For the love of the gods pay attention to the warning sign and watch the water. Idiots and smart people thinking they know better can still be caught of guard.

Lovely area! The basalt rocks looked very unique. The waves here can be very high and strong and unexpected, so visitors were advised not to get too close to the sea and to be wary.

Another black sand beach with basalt rocks, dangerous sneaker waves 😵 and blustery winds 💨. Parents with small children please be very observant while enjoying the sights of this remarkable beach.

It’s an awesome place to visit. The rock formations are incredible. Just remember to bring a jacket because it’s quite windy. The views are breathtaking!

Reynisfjara is seriously one of the most incredible black sand beaches you'll ever see. The towering basalt columns and the jagged sea stacks are just breathtaking, and watching those powerful waves crash against the volcanic sand is a sight you won't forget. But hey, a huge heads-up: this is also one of Iceland's most dangerous spots. They call them "sneaker waves" for a reason—they come out of nowhere and are super powerful. So, definitely read all the warning signs, and here's the golden rule: never turn your back on the ocean. Always stay a safe distance from the water's edge. When you get there, you can park right in the designated lot in front of the Black Beach Restaurant. It’s the closest spot and gets you right to the beach and all the safety info. Go ahead and take in the amazing view, just promise me you'll keep safety as your number one priority!

Lots of signs to the area that help with navigation. A couple different parking lots near there for parking which you need to pay for using the parka app. There’s a cafe and bathroom on site. The sand is absolutely beautiful and so cool to see. Definitely a crowded touristy spot but for good reason. The cave area and mountains are stunning and watching the waves crash on the black sand beach are great! It’s important to be safe and not stand too close to the water in case of sneaker waves
