The most exciting new MICHELIN Guide hotels for May 2022

"Long-stay hotels used to be dull places, but that’s all changed. The best of today’s residential-style apartment hotels are just as inventive as any boutique hotel — which is how you get Alda Fendi’s non-profit arts foundation hiring an architect of Jean Nouvel’s caliber to design Rhinoceros, a spectacular collection of apartments in the Foundation’s 17th-century Roman palazzo." - Le Guide MICHELIN

The Rooms of Rome, Palazzo Rhinoceros

"Set the scene for us.Palazzo Rhinoceros—the palazzo that houses The Rooms of Rome—is an early-20th-century building in Velabro, the oldest neighborhood in Rome. Completely renovated by star architect Jean Nouvel, the hotel has an artsy, industrial, wholly chic vibe, thanks to a museum on the ground floor as well as the clever juxtaposition of materials: exposed concrete and remnants of graffiti meet contemporary glass. What's the story behind this hotel?Rooms of Rome is the first boutique-serviced apartments for Kike Sarasola, the founder of the Room Mate group. Sarasola, along with Nouvel, was hand-selected by Alda Fendi of the Fondazione Fendi, an avant-garde contemporary art foundation also headquartered in Palazzo Rhinoceros, to create a living experience. Who else is here?Art lovers from around the world; here, boho chic mixes with yacht owners. What are the rooms themselves like?Rooms have exposed walls; a mix of mid-century and modern furniture; and kitchens and wardrobes concealed behind monumental steel panels. As a particularly clever twist, Nouvel hung original photos of the rooms over swaths of old wallpaper and left-in-place graffiti, effectively creating mirrors into the palace's previous life. How's the Wi-Fi?Free and good. How about the on-site dining options?Caviar Kasia, the rooftop restaurant, is a Paris import with a focus on its namesake roe. How'd you find the service? The staff is solidly professional and well-versed in the demands of an upscale clientele. Where is the hotel located? What's the neighborhood like? The Velabro neighborhood sits on the edge of the Roman Forum just beneath the Palatine hill. What it boasts in history, though, it lacks in contemporary shops and bars, though you'll find a few quaint boutiques and restaurants. Any feedback? The bathrooms and minibar could stand for more luxurious items. What are we missing? Anything else we should be sure to check out?Palazzo Rhinoceros is also home to Fondazione Fendi, a luxury brand with a penchant for the avant garde. Expect to see installations, exhibitions, and creative collaborations. So why would you recommend this hotel?Come for the artsy wow factor and the off-the-beaten-path privacy." - Erica Firpo

My wife and I stayed here late May, 2025. We flew in from Canada, overnight and I often have trouble sleeping on a plane. I was so grateful that when we arrived very early, they allowed up to get into the room at around noon. I am sure it isn’t always possible, but was a great start so I could get a quick sleep in the afternoon. Alessandra is wonderful. I don’t want to take away from anyone else, but she stood out to us. When getting our passport info, Alessandra noticed my wife’s birthday was 3 days after we checked in. She arranged a nice treat for her and everyone greeted my wife with a birthday wish. It was a really nice touch and we both appreciated it! The room was great, very clean, everything worked well, and a very comfortable bed. The art throughout the was nice to experience too. The location was within an easy walk to the Coliseum, baths, Trestevre… We will very likely be back to Rome and will certainly be staying here again. Highly recommended.

I stayed with my wife and 1 year old son here and the visit was very pleasant. I love the mix of modern and industrial. The first floor is a beautiful galley. There are lovely nearby walkable restaurants that offer good value and delicious. The absolutely best part of the stay were the staff. I don't think I've had better recommendations and sincere service in any other luxury hotel. Armani was especially helpful, giving me the most thorough introduction to the room and sites around the area. I was a little worried about driving in Rome, but the staff here gave great tips and eased my worries. There is parking on site, and stsff will park your car for you so you could focus on relaxing. Great stay, would definitely recommend!

Love the rooms and the location, just perfect. Service could be improved: we asked for the turn down service to come after 7pm, when they came at 6,45 we asked them to come back a little later as we were getting ready to go out, they never did. Aside from this, this is a spectacular spot to spend your holidays.

We had the absolute best 3-night stay at Rhinoceros Roma. We were a family of four and stayed in rooms 20 and 21 - connecting rooms, so would highly recommend for groups (they should do a better job advertising this on the website since it wasn’t obvious that connecting rooms were possible - so we were very pleasantly surprised). The rooms were immaculate, beautifully designed, and had everything we needed for our stay in Rome. So clean, with lovely smelling toiletries. All the staff we encountered were also very friendly and helpful. The location is absolutely perfect - 15min walk to the Colosseum, 25min walk to the historic centre (Trevi Fountain etc), so close enough to all the sights but far enough away from the hustle and bustle for some peace and quiet which we really appreciated after a long day of exploring. The only thing worth mentioning is that we had booked room 21 specifically as it has two twin beds (and they couldn’t be moved to make one double bed) - however, the shower area in this room was completely exposed to the rest of the room (glass shower wall) with no door/panel/etc so that you could shower in private within the room. As we had a connecting room, we just made use of the shower in the other room, but just not sure of the logic whereby two people wouldn’t want to share a bed (and therefore specifically booked a room with two twin beds) but are happy to shower, exposed in front of each other? Nonetheless, would highly recommend the hotel for a slightly “different” 5* experience in Rome - it is super cool to stay in design apartments in an art gallery!!

A wonderful hotel in every sense of the word. I stayed in room number two. I found the hotel to be characterized by a wonderful reception, great cleanliness, and a great location. I can confirm that the reception service was excellent at all times. They also helped me book trains, tourist attractions, and order a taxi. What a wonderful hotel! I thank the management. I recommend you to book this hotel, its service is wonderful. Best regards, Your friend Bandar.

A Truly Unique Stay in the Heart of Rome Rhinoceros is a truly beautiful hotel — completely unique in every sense. Each room tells its own story, offering a different experience with remarkable design and atmosphere. The cleanliness is excellent, and the location is simply magical, placing you right in the heart of the city’s charm. What truly stands out, though, is the exceptional staff — always ready to assist with a warm attitude and genuine hospitality. A memorable stay from start to finish.

I booked Rhinoceros Roma well in advance, expecting a smooth and hassle-free stay. However, just a few days before my arrival, they suddenly canceled my reservation without any valid explanation. This was a complete disaster—all my travel plans were set, and at the last moment, I was left scrambling for a new place to stay. A hotel of this supposed standard should never treat guests this way. If you’re looking for a stress-free and reliable booking, stay far away from Rhinoceros Roma—they clearly don’t care about their guests
