Rice and Bones, Sister Restaurant to Slanted Door, Is Closing After 5 Years on the UC Berkeley Campus | Eater SF

"After five years of serving both the UC Berkeley community and local residents, I learned that chef Charles Phan will close his East Bay restaurant Rice & Bones on Friday, May 12; the doors will officially close at 5 p.m. that day because the chef says the “current economic climate” makes maintaining the restaurant increasingly difficult. Fans still have a few more days to stop by for a rice plate with Meyer lemon chicken curry, and I noted Phan debuted a new Rice & Bones menu described as an “ode to rice” in August last year." - Lauren Saria

The Critics Swarmed Barvale This Week | Eater SF

"I followed Charles Phan to Rice & Bones in the UC Berkeley building where he once attended classes and found a rotating, cafeteria-style menu driven by chef de cuisine Dong Choi’s market picks—five proteins and six to eight vegetable sides. Prices might put off cash‑strapped students, but most dishes are “good, if not very good” (examples include sautéed wild flounder and lamb belly kissed with fennel), and the restaurant succeeds at serving high-quality, tasty food to students and faculty quickly and at a reasonable price point. While dishes are hot and delicious at noon, the cafeteria setup can become chaotic during the lunch rush, so I’d steer toward the made-to-order menu where staples like beef pho, vegetarian rolls, and the Slanted Door jicama and grapefruit would be unlikely to be messed up." - Andrew Dalton

I was looking for a place to have lunch in downtown Alicante and came across this restaurant. They said they only had two tables that weren't reserved but most of the others that weren't reserved ended up being empty tables. I got the paella with the creme sauces in the paella. This was much better than the paella two days prior, and had lots of rich flavor and taste to it. What I didn't get with ordering was the QR code on the table that I didn't see. I didn't realize you had to order before your wait staff would appear. This was a low key restaurant with good, and tasty food. Highly recommend a visit here.

I like the staff that they could leave you alone. The service was pretty easy, you can order using QR code. It’s nice the paella is for one person when you are a solo traveller. If you prefer more chatting with staff etc. It might not be the best place. But I found it’s a pleasant and easy place to grab some nice rice dishes. The taste is also good. Overall quite nice but lacking some atmosphere.

This place was recommended to us by a food guide tour from Alicante Food Club. Unfortunately it was closed during our tour so we made sure to visit the following day, we were so glad we did! We got a mix of arroz to share and would 100% recommend the traditional arroz ‘paella’ style. From starters to dessert the whole meal was delicious and didn’t disappoint, the wine was gorgeous too! The staff were very friendly and welcoming and guided us through the menu. Well worth a visit!

Google
Highly recommend!! Their menú has a lot of options for a very affordable price, and everything we got was delicious! A lot of options are seafood-based, but for those that don't like it, there are also several vegetarian and chicken-based options as well. We were also surprised to find the bread is gluten free!! We will definitely be back :)

Absolutely amazing! The food was incredible and the service was fantastic. A big shout out to our server Marco, who was spectacular! If you are looking for a beautiful lunch in a wonderful setting Rice and Bones is a must. You absolutely should make a reservation, as it gets very busy. They are also 100% gluten free!

This was on my list as soon as I saw they do individual portions. Because then you can try more flavours. We made a reservation for Sunday and I'd definitely recommend it. The staff was very helpful and friendly, explaining a couple of details when they saw we weren't local... Without being patronising. We had their papibravas, which were great, not too spicy for the newbies. We also had the eggplant, which was very tasty. We tried arroz meloso with squid ink and tiny octopuses and arroz meloso with shrimp and mussels. Both very tasty.

Amazing rice bar! The concept of having an individual portion is a great idea in case if you are a solo diner or simply want to sample different types of rice. You can choose from dry, creamy or wet. The dry version produced the socarrat "crispy bottom" like the traditional Valencian paella, both these rice dishes had well balanced flavours. The owner David is very enthusiastic about food. I am glad he found a different method to produce tasty results in an efficient manner. Things don't always have to be only done traditionally, it is refreshing to also try new things.

We had vegan Paellas and entrées and everything was absolutely delicious! The folks from this place were very kind in offering modifications to vegetarian dishes to serve vegan and the Berenjena with almendras was perfection! got hooked with the first try and we had to go back twice before we left Alicante, just to satiate our cravings for food from here 💯
