We could not believe it when Alaskan transplants of 26 years told us the best steaks in town were at a Chinese restaurant! So we had to try it and they were right! The building is a bit deceiving but the food was fantastic both in price and taste. My mom and I shared the chef seafood special and my husband and Dad both got the tenderloin (14oz) with potato options and my son got the 22oz porterhouse that came with a side of potatoes of choice and bread- all were very nicely done! The waitstaff were super nice and friendly.

Google
I had the BBQ Ribs, first off it’s $12…second of all ITS GRAY ???? Third, it was so bland and dry!! And it took 30 min???????? NEVER GET THE BBQ RIBS!!!! Nice place tho and the sesame chicken was good.

Google
Steaks and rice dishes are on point! shrimp, and Mongolian beef😋 On anthother note I have to say the lo mein/chow mein were both a real dissapointment for me. Really had high hopes for those dishes😑, still love the place though and the steaks alone give this place a solid 4/5!

Google
Egg Foo Young is close to my heart but not every place has it, not every place serves huge portions like this, and not every place serves it with American brown gravy. For those who enjoy this dish..one of the best I’ve ever had. For those who have never tried it, it is indeed an omelette with gravy on top served with rice. Nothing special about it but it’s nostalgic and delish for the ones that enjoy it. As mentioned before..portion is Huge! I’m not in anchorage much but this is my spot and this is my dish whenever I’m in town.

Went with Robert and Lorraine for dinner tonight!! Have never been there before and it was quite pleasant!! Food was fresh and tasty Steak was simple and wonderful!! I had the Neptune's Plate and it was a nice blend of seafood!! Szechwan Beef was tasty as well Nice quite place that seems to have been missed by myself Will definitely try again!!

Google
The tofu vegetable lo-mein was exceptional, despite my preference for meat dishes, it was the standout meal of my entire trip. The waiter was incredibly accommodating, making all the changes we needed for our order. I also tried the Mongolian chicken with rice, which was also delicious. I highly recommend paying a visit to this place.

Google
I ordered take out. My husband had the General Tso's chicken and enjoyed it. However, my chicken chow-mein was awful. The chicken wasn't thoroughly cooked, making the dish inedible. There were still raw pieces! The beef egg rolls were ok. The waitress/receptionist/cashier was very busy, but efficient.

Google
I went there with no expectations. The dishes were lovely though. I had the sizzling hot plate beef, the delicious crispy Peking duck and a Kong bao toufu which was also very good. We did ask the chef to reduce the salt level since we come from Singapore and the locals tend to be generous with salt.

Yelp
Always hard to pick between, Prime Rib, Porterhouse steak or Tenderloin here. It's all so good!

Yelp
This place is truly an odd duck. They have two specialties and they couldn't be more different: 1) Chinese food. 2) Big steaks. I've only ever gotten the steak. The steaks are very good and properly cooked. The salad that comes with the steak is one of the most pathetic things I've ever seen. It's a mountain of ice berg lettuce, dripped with white vinegar (not vinaigrette dressing, actual industrial vinegar), and augmented by 3 cherry tomatoes. So, I would HIGHLY recommend that you get the soup instead! For the other side, I subbed veggies, and it was absolutely worth the up charge! The veggies were fresh, crisp and NOT boringly steamed like so many other steak places. The interior is not fancy and beat down. If you want a "nice steak" come here. If you want a "nice restaurant" to eat it in, this is a tough one to recommend. I haven't had their Chinese food, so I can't comment, maybe next time.

Jenna K.

Yelp
Amazing food and service!! Will definitely go back. The steak was incredible, best sweet and sour chicken, and really could just live off the bread and wine. Not the best of locations is the only reason I gave 4 stars. Interesting people watching though.

Lorna M.

Yelp
I went in because they show Egg Foo Young as a menu item, but they don't actually sell it. The food was good, but they should update their website menu.

Yelp
Finally!! A Chinese Sparerib that meets my high standards in Alaska! I have looked far and wide in Alaska for a good basic Chinese Sparerib. At China Garden they make them puny like nibblets this is a Sparerib you can sink your teeth in! I love that it's got pull to it. We also got the Sizzling Beef it reminded Judy of a dish the Sizzling Wor Bar in Maryland. Now we'll have to come back and try their Prime Rib ... yeah we've heard from friends that the Prime Rib on their American Menu is the Bomb! It's only served on Friday and Saturdays. Happily I anticipate many ToGo Orders of Spareribs in my future!

Yelp
Tried dine-in with the kiddos and finally experienced the tenderloin steak that the town raves about. It was a great meal, good service, kitschy American Chinese atmosphere, with a TV playing football in the main room filled with booths and tables that have seen their share of seatings. The filet was made a perfect medium rare, could use some salt and pepper BUT it was just so pure sizzling in butter on the hot plate. Could only eat half of the rather large cut, $40 and served with soup or salad, and rice (I upgraded to fried rice). 14 year old ordered Mongolian beef (regular favorite) and sweet and sour pork (new exploration), and ate almost all of it. We also ordered the General Tso Chicken with fried rice upgraded and those three dishes (plus a side of egg rolls) were enough for our four top (two adults, a teen, and a 9 yo), with food leftover for a lunch and enough steak to make a solid breakfast burrito.

Jean

Yelp
no almonds on the breaded almond chicken and the breading fell off. It tasted like pork bullion gravey. The crab ragoon smelled like three day old fish. we ate 1 piece and sent it back. we were afraid it would make us sick. She did not take it off the bill. The sweet-and-sour pork was grizzly and tough. We won't be back.

Yelp
Small sit-down restaurant with a hard working single waitress. Generous servings. Sesame beef as good as we have ever had anywhere!

Yelp
Food is consistently good! Love the Happy Family lunch/dinner. I don't know what they do to their fried rice, but is is amazing.

Yelp
I just had lunch at this amazing place of delicious Asian cuisine! I've been here several times and eaten staples from their menu, but today I ate the Roast Duck lunch special, and it was AMAZING! This restaurant is the only one I've been to where I don't need to use sauces on the food because the food is so well seasoned. The staff is always very courteous and kind. The restaurant was and always is very clean whenever I go. I'm sure many know about this place, but if you're just finding out from Thai review, don't wait too long to enjoy their delicious menu! Bon Appetit!

Yelp
Best prime rib in town, sorry Club Paris! The outside of their prime rib has the BEST seasoning as well as the au jus. It's super umami--soy sauce, garlic, salty. Everything you want in a prime rib, and it's always tender, hot and fresh. They give you plenty of au jus, french bread, salad with an Asian inspired dressing, and a choice of fried rice or baked potato. While I can't eat bread, they are always very kind and willing to separate the bread in another box so it doesn't touch my food. Their pricing is also much cheaper than the $50+ prime ribs around town. All in all it's the best value you can get for your money and you leave full without having to cut off 1/2 a pound of fat. They deserve more customers for sure. Supposedly they've started offering prime rib Fri-Sun now. Go try it, you won't regret it. Oh one other thing--I've only taken my food to go, never eaten in the restaurant so I can't vouch for the location itself or customer service, but they are always quick and friendly on the phone.

Yelp
According to one of my 'Yelp Elite' colleagues, Vic E this place used to be the Rice Bowl. The Rice Bowl is my family's favorite Chinese Restaurant. They moved their business to Sitka St. I had a craving for Chinese food and thought I'd try out their new location. The wait staff are very friendly and welcoming. They have a special, as of November 2019, that's a Mushroom & Shrimp with Oyster sauce dish. I ordered that. I usually get the Mongolian Chicken, so I thought I'd try something new. The Mushroom & Shrimp didn't disappoint. The sauce was thick & savory with a tad bit of sweetness. I enjoyed it. It came with an egg roll and fried rice. It's well worth the $13.95. The complementary soup they gave me was a thick Egg Drop Chicken Noodle. I really enjoyed it and it warmed my bones. This is a very good place to have Chinese Food, especially on a cold winter day or night. They gave me a fortune cookie with my bill. And since I was by myself, it happened to read "Enjoy your own company. If you don't, who will?" Amen to that! It reminded me of RuPaul's signature quote. "If you can't love yourself, how the hell you gonna love somebody else?" Exactly! Thank you, Universe & Rice Garden staff for this lovely meal. You not only feed our bodies, but our hearts & souls.

Susan R.

Yelp
They have lovely interior decor, delicious food, and generous portions! It was right next to our hotel, so extremely convenient. We may eat there again! Thanks for asking us to review.

Yasha L.

Yelp
One word: steak. Hands down the best steak in town. I know what you're thinking, "why would I order steak in a Chinese restaurant?" The answer is because it's going to be one of the best streaks you've ever had. I don't know what they do to these steaks, but they are like nothing else. I've tried them all, but their teriyaki steak is magic. Just trust me.

Yelp
Home in the wall that are owned by the same people who ran Rice Bowl. Still yummy food if you look past worn ambiance. Service is good and attentive. They will get my business again and again.

Sharon L.

Yelp
Everything was great except 3 individuals brought 3 small children that screamed laughed and chattered throughout our dining Next time we observe a group like that we're leaving!

Teresa T.

Yelp
Do not order almond chicken whatever you do, it's awful. The mushrooms were black and old, the chicken was slimy, just yuk. They wouldn't even let me change it for something else...
google avatar

Connie C.

Yelp
Stayed at the hotel next door so was craving Chinese take out. Probably the best egg drop soup I've ever had with flavor, noodles, corn and eggs. The egg rolls were beef and old school delicious with plenty of cabbage. The crab Rangoon were traditional with a little more fish taste than usual but the sweet and sour chicken was tasty. Good solid Chinese choice!

Lionel B.

Yelp
Just picked up carry out from this place and it was awful service was good but the food it's self just was dry and had a weird after taste could even finish my plate got the number 5 by the way. Just terrible and the location is sketchy taking a break from Chinese food after that.

John C.

Yelp
I eat at the rice garden 2 or 3 times a month. Food is always good service also good. I think they have the best steaks in Anchorage also the prime rib great

Yelp
This review is basically a follow-up to the Rice Bowl which had closed down last year before reopening as the Rice Garden in their current location. I went for a family dinner here with my mother, one of her favorite Chinese restaurants to go to and she is friends with the owner (that doesn't mean getting free food, but I can only wish especially with their Prime Rib dinners). We came in and the owner shouted a friendly greeting to me and my mother who was greeted with a warm hug. We quickly got a booth with no wait and drinks ordered right away after being seated. Everything on the menu is worth trying, something my mother can attest to after eating at the Rice Bowl for many years. They have a lengthy menu full of traditional Chinese dishes, but the selection of steaks and the Prime Rib are what has made this restaurant so popular for a long time. My previous order was the Prime Rib cooked medium rare with bean sprouts and a side of au jus and horseradish for dipping. The Prime Rib was the best I've had recently, cooked at the right temperature and heavily seasoned on the edges. This time around, I just had to order the Garlic Chicken (boneless chicken cooked with water chestnuts, mushrooms, scallions, and garlic...LOTS of it with clove pieces instead of being minced or diced). If you're a garlic lover, this dish is highly recommended and adds another level of flavor to the chicken and sauteed vegetables. As always, we never had to wait very long for our food to arrive. The menu itself is still the same along with the prices, but it is well worth it for the effort and dedication on every item they prepare. The dining area is smaller than the old location, but we never had any issue finding a place to sit regardless of whether it is lunch or dinner. I am just happy for the owners that they were able to keep going at a new location and serving the same great food like before.

Yelp
My go to place for good Prime Rib on the weekends. Meat always cooked to order and they give lots of sides.
google avatar

Claire W.

Yelp
I ordered lots of food here. They are delicious. I tried to get at least two non-fried dishes. However, even the Mongolian beef is fried meat here. So, if you like healthy food, it's not a place for you. If you like fried food, you can try here.

Yelp
We ate here early Saturday evening 5:30pm, it was packed, only 2 servers working the entire place so be warned if you come during busy time you'll have a long wait (DO NOT get mad about the long wait since nobody wants to work nowadays) After the meal and watching what everyone else was eating & talking to a few people there found out that several employees are from the old, now closed "Rice Bowl" restaurant that served great tenderloin steaks. Half the restaurant patrons were eating steaks! The Chinese food was good but we'll be back for steaks next time!
google avatar

Bill C.

Yelp
Absolutely some of the very best Chinese food you will ever have It's the same menu and quality as the now closed Rice Bowl, outstanding! I've never been disappointed in anything from the Rice Garden It's the go to place for Chinese take (they do have inside seating but quite small and limited) out for those of us that have that have been in Anchorage a while! Also have great steaks

Yelp
This restaurant is a great option for a quick bite. The lunch menu has combos available (I go with the sweet and sour chicken/low mein/fried rice). Prices are reasonable. They do a busy take out business as well.

Deborah P.

Yelp
Very delicious cuisine and generous portions. So close to hotel we stayed inn and I will be happy to patronize this eating establishment next time I come to Anchorage.

Jalynn J.

Yelp
Food was mediocre and service sucked. 3 stars is a stretch. Server acted like she didn't want to be there. The only thing really good was the shrimp appetizer.

Justina M.

Yelp
While running errands I had a few minutes for a sit-down lunch. The waitress was really friendly and everyone there knew her name (Pearl). I ordered the lunch "J", Almond Chicken and Chicken Chow Mein. She brought the soup right away and my meal was almost right behind it. It was absolutely delicious! Freshly cooked and piping hot and served with some fried rice. I highly recommend them.

Kimberley H.

Yelp
Breaded almond chicken was amazing and my husband hates Chinese food but he definitely cleaned off his plate. We will be back.

Joe J.

Yelp
Best little steak house in anchorage.food is always good and the staff has been friendly since the day they opened. I wish I could keep this place a secret so I can always get the best cut of prime rib or tenderloin but that would be selfish of me and not fair to the restaurant to take business away .

S G.

Yelp
Did you notice the health inspection number 76? 12 violations?!!!! I didn't check this until AFTER we ate otherwise we wouldn't even gone there. My friend got sick (throwing up) after we left. Combination dinners offered variety for us to sample....Mongolian beef and SS pork were okay. The Lo Mein and fried rice were bad. The fried rice was dry and almost no taste Also some of combo dishes, do NOT come with egg roll and some do! Make sure you ask and notice the combo dishes will charge you MORE if egg roll is included. We won't go back.

David W.

Yelp
I have eaten egg foo jung sine 1947 and this may be the best I ever had --shrimp and pork combo --fresh, light and savory--the shrimp and lobster sauce was another 10 -- best Chinese restaurant in Anchorage bar none

Yelp
We used to go to The Rice Bowl on 6th Avenue and we were sad when it shut down in 2018. We heard a rumor that Rice Garden on Sitka opened and was very good so we decided to try it out. A large group of us went and all ordered different things. Everyone agreed that their food was great. There were only 2 other people eating when we got there and 2 more when we left. The service was very good, she checked on us several times and chatted with us a bit. They only opened about a month ago and she said business has been a little bit slow. We hope that more people find out about them because we definitely plan to go back! By the way, the menu and the food was very similar to the old Rice Bowl on 6th Avenue.

Yelp
This place was originally the pink building "Rice Bowl" restaurant. The food is the same AWESOME AND SERVICE AS USUAL AWESOME!

D D.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Anchorage. I love the shrimp egg foo young. Almond chicken and fried rice are good too.

Kim T.

Yelp
The Chinese food and prime rib were excellent !! Glad to find out about this place, since rice bowl had closed.
google avatar

Vivian L.

Yelp
This is the old Rice Bowl on 6th Avenue. I love this place. From their #1 steak in Anchorage to the authentic Chinese food!
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
Good food, good size portions, nice customer service, quiet but well lit, gorgeous artwork on the walls inside. I love their menu because whoever wrote it made little historical notes here and there. They are still open for take-out at the moment.

Rhonda R.

Yelp
My husband and I have eat there twice. One time we had steaks and the other we had Chinese food. Steaks were very tasty and cooked to medium rare perfection. The Chinese is the best I've had in Anchorage. Service was attentive. We'll be back!
google avatar

Jonye K.

Yelp
Great place if you want to get your fix for steaks and Chinese food! Large porterhouse and classic American or Chinese sides for $32.75. Ranges from fries, baked potato, egg rolls, egg drop soup, and many others. Would come again!

Alaska30 W.

Yelp
A friend has been recommending this for years and I finally gave them a try. He's right that they have excellent steaks and the prime rib was delicious. I ordered a medium rare tenderloin/filet and it was perfect. Excellent quality steak, perfectly cooked, and truly medium rare. Others had prime rib and were equally pleased. The owner and wait staff provided exceptional service.
google avatar

Adam L.

Yelp
Amazing new spot!!! New place with great service and even better food! Highly recommend for those looking for a place with quality portions of authentic Chinese food at a very reasonable price!!
google avatar

Roger G.

Yelp
No one else has written a review, so I figured I'd be a guinea pig. I went to get a to-go order (they don't do delivery). The place was sandwiched between a strip club and a low-end motel. Parking at 3pm was fine since I was the only one there. Inside it looked fine. I made the mistake of ordering the VERY spicy Hunan beef in dinner #4. whew! Some people like spicy dishes like this, but not this guy. Overall the food seemed about average for a small Chinese restaurant. Nothing to rave about either good or bad.
google avatar

Don O.

Yelp
Used to be the Rice Bowl and has always had some of the finest Chinese food in town. Most people that live here in town know it for having some of the finest steaks and prime rib there is. Excellent food and highly recommended.
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
As someone who grew up eating at Rice Bowl, the food taste and quality is superb. The Shrimp with Lobster Sauce continues to be delicious and I will be visiting more often to re try old favorites.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Very nice hole in the wall Chinese restaurant. Found it off a limb when driving towards downtown. It was very clean on the inside, service was great. Food was good, I'm very picky when it comes to Chinese but I enjoyed it very much. Hands down mine and my husbands favorite of what we ordered was the Chow Mein! The soup was also great, funny part is I was a little hung over going here but that soup hit the spot ! Lol definitely would recommend!

Jane B.

Yelp
Businesses need customer feedback. Place was in a tight, sorta hidden spot. Crowded indoors for a pandemic. Ordered takeout. Egg foo young took almost an hour to prepare apparently due to high customer volume inside. Egg foo young was delicious though at decent price. Will be back here for take out.
