My first time here on a Friday for lunch with coworkers, and I turned out to be pleasantly surprised. The man at the counter taking and doling out orders is refreshingly kind and polite. I wanted a lot of veg with my bowl, so I ordered the OG Veggie bowl, which comes with a double portion of all four veg bombs, and I added a 4oz. portion of their brisket, since that is apparently what they are known for. Medium spice choice was perfect, as one of my coworkers ordered his Hot, and said he couldn’t really taste anything other than the heat! I was able to get two meals out of one bowl, as it’s a hefty portion! The only thing I’d recommend to the business is adding something sweet to the bowl, to balance out all that saltiness and spice, like mango or corn perhaps? Otherwise it was definitely a memorable lunch, and I’d definitely go back for more!

Look for the building with the "York" sign in blue - Ricewood will be inside that building on the right. As it turns out, York owns the space and Ricewood rents from them. The whole space is like a small market! There's a bunch of outdoor rustic seating and multiple places to purchase food, drinks, and gifts. The BBQ brisket was good by itself - tender and juicy - but the sauce was way too sweet for my liking. And there's too much sauce on the rice, but it's a very good flavor! I definitely recommend this place and we will be back. The staff was so friendly!

Super good, probably my new favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor and nice outside area to hang out at. Just really interesting flavors you don’t usually get with bbq and I was into it.

I loved this place, I went there twice, the meat was delicious, the second time I took 8oz brisket, 8oz ribs, 4oz pulled pork and red coke slaw. Wow, the meat was melting in my mouth, if you are looking for a very good BBQ in Ann Arbor, I strongly recommend going to Ricewood!!

RECOMMEND!! I ordered Chopped Brisket Rice Bowl that’s mildly spicy, it was MOUTHWATERING! It tastes so amazing and the serving was so much for me I couldn’t even finish it, I had to take some home. The utensils and bowl are eco friendly so that’s a PLUS. I ordered online for pick-up.

The brisket is the star of the show, and it’s absolutely incredible. Tender, juicy, and loaded with flavor, each bite hits you with just the right amount of smoke and seasoning. The bark is crispy and rich, while the inside stays melt-in-your-mouth soft. You can tell it’s cooked with care and patience. No shortcuts. No gimmicks. Just seriously good barbecue. Pair it with their sticky rice and that signature sauce, and you’ve got a perfect plate. The pickled veggies bring a tangy balance that keeps you going back for more. It’s the kind of meal you think about for days. Just get there early because they sell out fast. Ricewood is the real deal.

Fast casual Asian bbq. The food was really good. They allowed us to get the spicy sauce on the side so we could customize our heat level. The kool-aid was a nice sweet contrast to the vinegar of the bbq. Probably the best pork belly I have ever had!

Such good food and very friendly service. My entire family loved all of our meals. I think we tried all of their rice bowls that they had between all of us and they did not disappoint! I had the pork belly one myself and it was so good!

I was recommended to come here by a coworker. Didn't think much of it until I looked up and read the high ranked reviews. So I decided to finally swing by this place for lunch. I did have a confusing time finding where this place was. There was no parking in the front, so I drove to the back of the building and that's where I saw the entrance and the giant grill. Luckily that's where I found parking as well. I walked in the building and took a look around as I searched for ricewood. The ordering window was located in the front of the building, of course. Service was amazing. The guys were so cool and down to earth. I couldn't decide between the pork belly and brisket bowl, so I got both with the cucumbers and cabbage. I waited no more than 10 minutes before my food was ready. I tried the pork belly first. It was decent. I then tried the brisket and my whole body melted to the floor. Hands down, that has to be some of the best brisket I've ever tasted. I couldn't stop eating it! It was beyond delicious! And when you eat all the ingredients together in one bite, it's like heaven in your mouth. I only planned on eating half the bowl for lunch and the other half for dinner. That plan went straight out the window! It was just too good! I'm very impressed with the flavor profile of this establishment. I'm confident I'll be returning for more of this outrageously scrumptious brisket!

Excellent place. Small menu but totally awesome and caters to most of us. Good idea for the pickup or a casual dining. The inside eating place is shared with a Deli place and outside eating area is shared too with a funky nice setting. We went for lunch and were able to secure a seat inside for 4 easily. I ordered OG Veggie Bowl with low spice. It was really amazing and flavorful. Unlike other places, the bottom portion of rice was not plain- flavorful from top to every grain of the rice. The server rightfully warned about the spice LEVEL. Dare you to order spicy level. Medium was super good and tasty but as expected, it was spicy but perfect with the potato chips. OG Veggie bowl comes with all 4 choices of veggie bombs - pickled onions, sesame cucumber, red cabbage slaw and house kimchi - all super delicious !!!

I'm really glad I didn't write a review the first time I came because I didn't understand the concept. I heard Ricewood has the best brisket in town but somehow missed the memo it was Asian fusion with rice and I expected to have traditional BBQ with Mac and cheese and other southern sides. Thankfully, I decided to come back again after my brain caught up. Since, I've ordered the brisket and the pork belly bowls. My oh my. The brisket is good, but the pork belly is To. Die. For. The rice and veggies are delicious. We typically order takeout and have had a great experience each time.

Wow, twice in one trip! We enjoyed our first visit to Ricewood so much, we planned another meal there before we left for AZ. First visit was a Sunday lunch, they were out of almost everything. I enjoyed the tofu bowl, while the rest of my party all had burgers. On the second trip we all ordered brisket bowls. The rice base is seasoned and includes small chopped scallions and tomatoes, but for veggies there is a choice of slaw, pickles, etc in the bowl. The brisket was huge nearly slabs, very little waste and super tender. The bark is a salty spicy Asian seasoning and so unique! What a great value, portion and quality for a walk up shared seating kind of venue. Very crowded at peak times, but don't let that or their limited parking deter your from trying it!

Good if you are a meat lover. Service is excellent. And we love their brisket and burnt end, very tasty.

I've only tried the pulled pork but its pretty good especially with the spicy bbq sauce. The sides weren't anything special but did add nice balance of acidity of freshness beside the rice and meat. I wished there was a little more meat to rice though. I'll probably just get the meat by the pound next time!

This is a good/bad review. I'll break this into a few parts. Meat: Let's start with the star of the show... the meat. Brisket was the best I've ever had. So frickin delicious. I also ordered a 4 ribs which also tasted great. Zero complaints about the meat. Rice: The rice was also great and had some fresh scallions and I added on Sesame Cucumbers. Sauce: I think where it went a little south for me was the sauce they put on the rice. It had a strong taste that over powered the rice and topping. I would have probably requested that on the side in the future. It was the medium sauce (which was more of a 8 of 10 than a 5 of 10). I was warned that the hot was super hot... I should have probably went with the mild. Not sure if the hot/medium/mild taste any different but for me the medium was not to my liking. Don't want to get anyone confused with the bbq sauce which was super flavorful. The service was fast and super friendly. This is from the Packard St. Located in a mini food mall on. Their window is at the very front of the building. There is also a full service bar and wine bar located in same place (not part of Ricewood) so you can always grab a beer or cocktail to go with the your meal. I would definitely go back but skip the rice bowl and go for a sandwich or straight meat instead.

We came here about 45 min before closing and many items were sold out. Luckily we LOVED the pulled pork. We both had rice bowls. Mine with pickles red onions and cabbage slow and my son got house kimchi. We both got mild spice. It creeps up on you in a tasty way! We plan to come back again (and again) but way earlier to try the other proteins. The green iced tea was great too.

Had their special burger, delicious. Thick burger patty and lovely fatty mayo and veggies to balance it all out. Burger was cooked med/med rare (no option for personalized doneness). Personally I prefer a bit more cooked patty but alas it was still excellent. Cashier was friendly and knowledgeable as always.

This Ricewood location is inside York, one of my favorite cafes in Ann Arbor. As with York, I appreciate the outdoor seating area. I've only tried the pork belly, which is solid, but I'm not a fan of sauce that is drizzled on top. Next time, I will ask that no sauce be added to my meat. I think the rice bowls are overpriced for the amount of meat provided, which is why the second time I visited, I ordered only meat by the pound. I am seconding what another Yelper recommended: skip the rice bowl. I'd say just order the meat, take it home, and prepare your own rice and vegetables.

Tried Ricewood with friends for the first time this month despite hearing about it from friends. Ricewood operates out of a small stall in the front of the building. Since it was our first visit, the cashier gave us free Kool-aid which was incredibly refreshing and sweet on a hot day. I ordered the pork belly rice bowl with sesame cucumber bomb mild side. The meat was fatty and juicy with a smoky flavor -- generous servings too! The only thing I didn't care much for was the tomatoes that were added in. Overall, great service and delicious food!

Every time I eat here, it's like the most beautiful food I've ever seen. My favorites are the brisket and ribs. You get a generous portion of meat and white rice in a rice bowl. The food here has great flavor, and the bbq sauce adds the perfect touch, my favorite is the spicy. The staff is always super nice with great customer service. Ricewood for the win!

This is easily the best brisket I've had. Staff were incredibly nice and very generous. Music was fun. Food was hot and came out quick. Compostable containers were great. But good gods, that brisket.

Why am I addicted to Ricewood so much? Ok ok ok, for starters, this place is located inside of a food court/market kind of building. Parking is impossible at times, so keep that in mind. Now onto the good part. Get the rice bowl with the brisket and a side of pork belly. Literally SO amazing. The meat almost melts in your mouth. The cashiers are ALWAYS friendly and super on point. I highly recommend checking this place out.

Get the rice bowls for the full experience! My favorites are the pork belly and brisket rice bowls. Both are so flavorful, the rice is mixed with a fresh sauce to balance out the meat perfectly. I like to get it spicy but mind you, the spicy level IS spicy. Service is great! I love ordering here just because the server is so friendly. He calls everyone "friend" which just feels nice imo. The environment is also nice. It feels like a bustling cafe. Not the best for a work in cafe situation but I like the ambiance, it's just so full of life!

This place is serving out some of the finest East Asian-inspired, barbecue-centric cuisine in the city, if not the finest! I was treated with a taste of the pork belly on rice and it was so good that I somehow felt as if I was getting hungrier with each new bite. This food is made with love and will put a smile on your face from the first bite to the last! 10/10!

I typically do some research prior to heading out to a new lunch or dinner spot. It helps build my anticipation for the meal ahead. This time around, I was preoccupied with work and did not do my usual due diligence. So when I entered Ricewood into Google Maps and quickly took a digital tour of the area for parking, I have to admit, I did not see the restaurant. I still headed out. While Google was able to pinpoint the location, I drove past it because I only saw the sign for York Food and Drink and not the one for Ricewood. I quickly re-routed and pulled into a back lot to discover the local area. Ricewood is located at the very front of the York Food and Drink property, operating from behind a small interior window, beside the bar. Their menu of offerings marks the spot. This menu is simple, rice bowls, sandwiches, and a few sides, the difference depending on the barbecued meat. I ordered the brisket rice bowl (served in a compostable bowl), tender and marbled brisket paired with soy- and vinegar-flavored rice topped with scallions and tomatoes. It was so tasty - and that's not just hunger speaking. The rice flavors paired so well with the richness of the Texas-style brisket, who would have thought? Additionally, I ordered 8oz of the indulgent pork belly for dinner later on in the day which was also tasty. With a seat by the window, I enjoyed my quick meal while enjoying the lively space. The staff here is friendly and helpful.

It's definitely quality BBQ with an unusual Asian twist. My friend loved his pork belly bowl however my brisket was really fatty. I ended up with a pile of fat that was about half of the meat portion. I know brisket is suppose to have fat but not that much. I'll try it again and maybe order the pulled pork. Also, the purple cabbage (veggie bomb) I added was really spicy making my mild spice bowl a bit too spicy for me. The high top chairs are very, very small. I don't have a huge backside but I was struggling to keep from falling off the chair the whole time. They are so shallow. I would challenge the people who work there to try to sit on the chairs and eat a meal! I think the chairs were ordered for looks without anyone actually trying them out.

Best smoked meats in the area. Staff is friendly and service is quick. Quality food fast, what more is there to ask for?

Today's BBQ adventure comes from this walk-up, fast restaurant that is housed by YORK Food and Drink. My brisket rice bowl had some of the best brisket I have had...maybe ever! So delicious!! The guy who took my order was quite jovial, and I enjoyed a quick conversation with him as I let him describe the add-on bombs for my rice bowl. I added the red cabbage slaw, the house kimchi, chili crisp, and pickled red onions to the mix and was thrilled with my portion and the spice. The spice may be too much for some as my mouth was screaming for something cool to go along with it, but I love that sensation! If you're looking for someone to serve you at a table, this is not the place as you have to walk up to the counter to place your order. Don't let that deter you, however. Grab your rice bowl with its add-on bombs and enjoy the spicy yumminess at a table inside or take it away. You won't be sorry you stopped in!

I wish I could say that we knew about this place and that we set out to visit, but that's not how it went down. After failing (once again) to get to the Bao Boys before they ran out of food, we decided to give Ricewood a try and boy were we glad we did! We tried a brisket sandwich, some chicken and a rice bowl and all were absolutely delicious! The rice bowl was amazing and the highlight. The pork belly was done to perfection and the various veg and condiments included were so flavorful. In particular, whatever wizardry produced that chili crisp bomb just might be responsible for holding the universe together, because that stuff is straight supernatural.

Asian fusion has its place. Unfortunately, I'm finding that it's place might not be on my table. Ricewood had an exciting concept: combine Asian-inspired rice bowls with southern bbq. I had the Bork belly rice bowl. The portion was reasonably big, with ample pork belly over two big scoops of rice. The pork belly was more dry than I had hoped, and the sauce used in the dish was much more sour than sweet with almost no Asian notes. I asked for "maximum spicy" but could barely detect any heat. The fusion landed decidedly further towards the bbq than the Asian component, while I had hoped for the opposite. I also tried the pulled pork, which overall lacked flavor and was likewise dry. I probably would not eat here again.

Ricewood is fabulous!!! Great place to grab lunch/dinner. The bowls are big and shareable if you're looking for a light lunch. My favorite is the pulled pork with the non spice sauce. It's delicious!!

Holy Shiit. This place is fire. If you like ribs, Get the Rib Bowl. The meat was perfectly cooked full of flavor and high quality. I don't have a photo because they disappeared before I could get to it

Wow. This is one of the best places I've been to in Ann Arbor. I've been to almost every place, and this is one of the best! Pro Tips: 1) Order early!!! Limited supply of food, and huge demand. Fridays are wild. I called at 5:30pm and got the last bbq bowl entree. That is saying something! 2) If eating with someone, order two entrees and split it. 3) Beware of spice level! Everything has a kick. I got the mild, and it was more on the moderate side, but it made me love it even more. I got the BBQ Burnt Ends bowl, and it was my 2nd time ever having burnt ends and it was amazing!!! You have to try this place out. Explore the area too. It's awesome.

BRISKET. That's the review. That's it. Kidding. I've been a pretty frequent visitor of York these days (Ricewood is located inside York). The first time I tried Ricewood was when we stopped into York's outdoor dining space for dinner during an evening with the Paella truck. Since the line was long, I was looking for a lil' something to nosh on while we waited. Ricewood's online ordering/pick up system was super convenient & easy to use. They sell their brisket in half pound increments. The first time, I went with a conservative half pound. The second time, I went for 1.5 pounds. The brisket is tender, really nicely smoked and just really dang good 'cue -- especially since we're not in the south! It comes with both a side of BBQ sauce AND their finadene (which is available in various heat increments but I am ALL about their spicy one. I'm going to note that it's completely unnecessary to sauce this brisket because it's that good BUT if you want to amp up the flavor, it's a nice touch. I have encountered a few times where Ricewood is out of the brisket. So, if it's available, you best order it! The service is awesome too. One time, their online system put my order as the next morning & I was grateful that someone from Ricewood called me to double check. The most recent time, I was in York to buy some bubbly and I figured I'd check if they had the brisket available & the guy happily helped me even though their ordering is all online right now. If you're craving BBQ in Tree Town, this is the place to go!

I've been a loyal customer since they opened. Back when they used to do "if you're the first one in line the bowl is on us" deal. I think I got it once wayyy back in the day. But everything I've had from here has been delicious. I love the owners they've always been super nice.

As stated in other reviews it is inside the York. I went with the spicy brisket bowl. The brisket was tender and well cooked. The bowl was flavorful but could have used some additional elements to the rice. Service was very fast for a great lunch.

POW POW pow in your mouth. Great bbq. Get extra soy/vinegar sauce. Half rice for the perfect portion.

The rice bowl has a very good quality control you can expect chewy rice + tender meat with nice grilled flavor. You can enjoy a relaxing meal in the restaurant or have a faster take-out. Wish they could add grilled salmon and grilled shrimp to the menu : p they also have nice smiles and kind greetings even in a busy hour, which is very nice!

Great bbq at a great price. The meat melts in your mouth, unlocking a cascade of savory flavors. The portions are large, and relatively inexpensive. Definitely adding this place to my rotation of go-tos. The only downside - I wish they had more sides, especially cornbread.

Oh, what can be said about Ricewood that hasn't already been said? It's always been damn good and that hasn't changed since they got their spot inside Morgan & York. I love coming in here for a quick bite. There may be a bit of a line but service is friendly and quick and the meal is always worth it. Love the tacos so come on taco night if you can! Their usual fare is always good, too. You can also grab a beer or some wine at the bar to enjoy with your tasty meat meal. It's a win-win!

Oh Damn! Mhhmm! Amazing BBQ with an Asian flare!? I.am.in.love. Dad has been wanting to try their Brisket for the last week. (capital B because this Ricewood meat owns the name) He missed it the day before but wasn't going to get beat today. It was 11:15am and the line was a dozen people thick. The chalkboard menu is small. Brisket is available by meat alone, or on a rice bowl. To have the full experience, I choose a Brisket bowl with the cucumber ($1) and kimchi ($1) bomb, 50/50 heat. (thanks for the advise long-haired guy salivating ahead of me in line) Some of the customers were apprehensive of getting to the window, which made me pay attention to what was going on. The guy at the window was on it! Step up, order, pay, step aside. No dottling. If you didn't know yet, then step off until you do know. When we reached the window, I was happy that the dude was friendly and easy to ask a question or two. We ordered our bowls to go and went to find seats. The BBQ sauce is only one kind and it's good. Sweet, spicy, smoky and pineapple! Though once I got my bowl in front of me, it didn't need any sauce. The Brisket has an amazing crust, full of flavor to savor. My bowl was full of rice, with a couple fat slices of the meat, topped with a chuck of brunt end. Score! The meat just melts in your mouth but you have that crunch of the crust that is just the right amount of salt and mix of flavors that you just can't quite identify. The 50/50 spice level was no joke. If you like spicy, try the 50/50 first. If you are a wuss, don't get spice at all. The cucumbers were a nice addition, and the kimchi was fresh and flavorful. The parking lot is small and busy, so be patient, or get out of the way. Get there early for the Brisket. It sells out.

Brisket is dry, tough, and has a lot of goey fat between the meat and over-salted seasonings. I prefer when it's cooked with the "fat cap" down. Make sure to ask for a sturdy knife (they have them in back), since they don't slice all the way through before serving, and the bottom is very dry and hard.

Top notch food, quick friendly service, chill atmosphere at maple rd location. Had a brisket bowl here a few weeks ago and it's some of the best brisket I've ever had anywhere

I have been to ricewood dozens of times, and I have tried many things on the menu. The main items are a sandwich or rice bowl, and you can supplement with their small but flavorful condiment-like side, and extra meat if you wish. You go here for the brisket and ribs. If you are seeking out pulled pork or chicken, this is not the right place for you. These items are okaaaay, but they pale in comparison to the brisket and ribs, so they are a comparatively bad value. The ribs are the most consistent thing on the menu. They are always perfectly seasoned, perfectly smoked, and nice and meaty. They come off the bone easily, but they don't fall off themselves, and they are tender, but also have a nice chew to them. The rub is not a traditional texas style situation -- there are asian influences in there, but this is not a bad thing. They are outstanding, with or without the supplied bbq sauce. All other ribs I eat for the rest of my life will be compared to these. If you're going to get a side with these, I recommend the cucumber. The brisket is a bit of a conundrum. The seasoning is always spot on, with some nice szechuan peppercorn in the crust, but depending on the cook, rest time, and where on the brisket your order has been sliced from, your enjoyment level can vary quite a bit. I like my brisket fatty and moist, and when my serving of ricewood brisket has these characteristics, there is little other brisket (or other bbq for that matter) that can compare to it. That said, when I get a lean cut, it is often dry and needs quite a lot of sauce to get to the somewhat enjoyable stage. Unfortunately, you have no control over where your meat will be cut from, so you get what you get. It's like flipping a coin, where you will be very happy if your coin says moist and fatty. I like the brisket with the chili crisp side. I prefer the rice bowls to the sandwiches. Rice, and the soy vinegar flavor they dump on it, goes well with the asian influence in the rubs they use. There is enough rice in the rice bowls to feed two, so if you don't mind sharing, get a brisket rice bowl and ribs on the side (or vice versa). This is one of the best two-person lunch orders in town. If you are seeking brisket, they tend to run out before dinner time, so head there for lunch (or call ahead) to get your fix. I want to give it 4.5 stars, but I am rounding up to 5 because that number seems more appropriate than 4. The lost half star stems from the inability to select the fattiness level of your brisket, and the overwhelmingly high ratio of rice to meat in the bowls. Still, it's by far the best bbq in Ann Arbor, and possibly in Michigan.

Ricewood is a welcome addition to Ann Arbor's food scene. I've sampled a few items on their menu, but they're usually sold out of a lot of things by the late afternoon, especially on Fridays. Their brisket is good, both from its flavor profile as well as the aesthetic point of view - particularly the bark and the smoke ring. They also have good burgers, which are usually offered on Fridays. You can't go wrong with the classic burger! They have an active social media page where they frequently post updates and visuals, so it's a good way to stay informed with what's going to be on the menu for that day or week. It might seem pricey, but that's just the case with barbecue in general. Certainly worth trying!

Delicious, delectable hole-in-the-wall (literally) inside York. We keep wanting to try more but by dinner time, all of the meat is almost sold out! We usually order a pulled pork bowl (adding all of the bombs, of course). Bombs are add-ons like marinated cucumbers or house-made kimchi. My favorite part of the experience is the pineapple bbq salsa! One time I was blessed enough to try their PFJ sandwich special. Pulled pork, whipped feta cream cheese, and bourbon jalapeño jam on an onion roll. I still dream about until this day.

First time at Ricewood (finally) at the recommendation of many friends. Omg this place is amazing. It's so good. I'm still shocked. Presentation wise, the food looks good. But once you dig in, it's hard to stop. I got the brisket rice bowl (the spare ribs was sold out) but I couldnt be happier. The rice is soft and chewy and very well seasoned. The brisket had some burnt ends that were to die for. When we ordered by phone, the guy apologetically said that they had to double their brisket prices. As a customer, this kind of transparency wasn't needed but was refreshing to hear. You can tell the folks at Ricewood think through customer interactions. We were happy to pay the double price. I think sometimes at these places I worry if I will have enough food. The rice bowls are FILLING. I couldn't finish it and had enough for a second meal. The other standout was that when you get to the bottom of your rice bowl it is seasoned or drenched in sauce. Yummy. Broke up the rice flavor in a good way. As I munched happily on my rice bowl, I kept telling my fiance "we are definitely going back!!!" And we certainly will!

This review is just for the Tofu Ricebowl- it was by far the saltiest thing I have ever eaten in my life. Like eating pure salt.

Food is fantastic! Highly recommend the brisket -- melts in your mouth. Portions are quite large. Also great for catering large groups.

And pair that with a bowl of perfectly cooked rice, pickled veggies and kimchee and tasty Asian inspired sauces- it's pure heaven. The staff are the sweetest guys ever. Plus their location rocks.. sleek and chic, air conditioned Morgan and York is an open space market with incredible cheeses and meats and local goods- and they have an amazing array of wine and beer and even cocktails (despite me being totally preggo at moment). It's a perfect place for lunch! I'm hooked.

Excellent dishes. Great barbecue flavors. Finally a place not afraid of spicing it up. Overall one of the best bbq places in town with the Asian twist of kimchi and chili crisp. Very friendly folks. Will be back All the take out utensils etc are environmentally friendly so an added plus for the world ! I also like their non standard soda choices. Overall a nice experience!

Updated review (August 2019): Ricewood has SERIOUSLY upped their game now that they've moved into Morgan and York. The atmosphere is super cozy and inviting inside, and their meat just keeps getting better and better. My standard order: Brisket rice bowl with cucumbers and 50/50 sauce on the side. I was seriously impressed by their brisket, and also had a taste of their kimchi bomb (worth the extra $1!). Totally worth the money.

This place is fantastic, Gabe and his team have really mastered the art of smoked meats. I come from TX which is BBQ at it's best and Gabe and his team mix that with an Asian fusion. Hats off to you!

I can't believe it took me this long to visit Ricewood, but I'm glad that they are now inside, because I firmly believe that barbecue, and life in general, is better when you're not freezing your butt off outside in the middle of a Michigan winter. We decided to stop at Ricewood for a late lunch after moving our friend into town. We realized on the way there that they would be closing within 10 minutes of us arriving (they close from 2-5 pm every day) and were worried about inconveniencing them, but quickly realized upon arriving that this is a counter-service situation and we would be ordered and have our food before 2 pm anyway. Unfortunately, they only had pulled pork left, though that is probably what I would have ordered anyway, so it didn't phase me much. I really like the York space- it has a very cool coffeehouse vibe, and lots of delicious-looking pastries and retail wines to choose from. However, because of said coffeehouse-vibe, many people were obviously parked at their table for the day with laptops open, and we struggled to find a place to sit, ending up on a narrow "bar" near the Ricewood window. My pulled pork and rice with sesame cucumbers bowl was delicious. The "medium" spiciness (they offer no spice, medium, and hot), was hotter than I expected, so be aware. Bottles of barbecue sauce (one type) are on the table so you can add as much or as little as you want. The portion was so large, I grabbed one of their handy lids and took the rest home for lunch the next day. While this was probably the best barbecue in Ann Arbor, I thought it was a little pricey for what it is: self-service (order at counter, find your own seat, get your own water, etc.), limited menu (4 types of meat max, but often run out, plus no sides other than chips), and limited hours (closed 2-5 pm every day). That being said, I will definitely be back (earlier in the day, so I can try some brisket) for my next barbecue fix.
