Paraphrasing Marcus Aurelius (via Hannibal Lechter): "Of each particular thing, ask: What is its nature?"
This is how I feel about Richmond Republic Draught House. This is a beer joint, an establishment with a collection of beer that is both large enough for you to find something you really like, but constrained enough for you to not get lost (or hopelessly drunk) looking for something you really like. You might come here for dinner (as I often have), but if you do, you should recognize that while they have a reasonable menu, the food is not (or should not be) your reason for coming.
That said, after frequenting this establishment several times and sampling the menu, I have found what I will order every subsequent time I come here: the birria quesadlilla and the fried Brussels sprouts. The former is well constructed and firm with good flavor and heat; the latter is all that you would expect from fried veggies (i.e., the tastiest way to get your veggies for the day, even if in this case it's a little heavy on the oil). I've not yet been here for brunch, but I intend to. You probably should, too. But don't plan on driving back. It is, after all, a beer joint.
