Cold night. Below freezing. Needed soup. That's where Rickshaw came in.
Rickshaw has a small dining area that includes some counter seating in front of an open kitchen. For a Thursday night, there was only a brief wait before we slipped into two of those counter stools. Nobody seemed anxious to leave once their tummies were full. I took that as a very good sign.
My Pho Ga was a large bowl of Asian seasoned broth filled with noodles, topped with sliced chicken, bean sprouts and sliced lime. My word to the wise is, understand this healthy cuisine includes a love affair with spicy chile. This soup came with jalapeno slices that gave a warm, spicy flavor to an already complex broth that was strong with 5-star anise. I shamelessly picked the jalapeno out knowing it had done enough work already
The Hoisin Cashew Shrimp is a mouthwatering dish of deep fried, tender shrimp that is served over rice. The hoisin sauce and sesame seeds are a great finish. A great dish.
The Thai Beef Salad is beautifully presented with layers of lettuce, rice noodles, cucumber, raw beet threads, filet mignon slices, cilantro dressing, and toasted rice flour. The tender beef slices were beautifully marinated and perfectly cooked. But again, beware of sneaky chile fireworks. You will have no trouble discovering how right I am as you bite into tiny, almost imperceptible chunks of potent, Thai chiles (feisty seeds included). Wuss that I am, I repeated my hunt to remove all these, after realizing I had lost all the feeling in my lips. But this dish, including a typical Thai dressing (made from fish sauce, sugar, and lime juice), is one of my favorites.
Chenin Blanc. Very fruity and delicious, it went well with the spicy goods.
This was a delightful meal.
