The Newest Restaurants In Chicago

"In Irving Park, Rickshaw is a casual spot with Indian and Pakistani dishes. For all the poultry-fanatics, their menu has a full section dedicated to rotisserie and fried chicken. They also have non-bird-related options like lamb biryani, butter paneer, and samosa chaat." - john ringor, veda kilaru, nick allen

Rickshaw Pakistani & Indian Street Eats will open over the weekend in Irving Park | Eater Chicago

"Chef Faraz Sardharia, who has operated Tandoor Char House for the past 13 years, is debuting a new Pakistani & Indian street-eats concept in Irving Park at 4304 N. Pulaski Road, opening Saturday, February 15. Sardharia calls it a “mission-driven restaurant.” For him there are three main reasons: first, he wants to open a more affordable restaurant whose menu of burgers, tacos, pastas, samosas, and a South Asian version of rotisserie chicken can appeal to a wider customer base and hopefully introduce more Chicagoans to South Asian flavors. Second, he plans to host activations partnering with nonprofits that help the unhoused — he mentions Shower Up Chicago, sits on the board of Chi-Care and was active in feeding migrants as they were being bused from Texas — and he sees the restaurant as a base for mobile health clinics to help the most vulnerable. “Obviously we hope to pay our bills with this business and then some,” Sardharia says. “But I’m pledging to give back to the community personally, with hopes of this business doing well and giving back in the forms of warm meals and a place for the unhoused to come and grab a meal.” Third, he will seek halal certification through HMS; while acknowledging that halal certification can be controversial, he notes that many Muslim customers want reassurance and that certification is a smart business decision. The location is around the corner from the Muslim Community Center: “This is kind of my way of giving back to our Muslim community as well,” Sardharia says. “We’re making sure that if people are going to pray around there during Ramadan we’ll have some dining options after.” Despite rising business costs, Sardharia frames the project as a way to combine affordability, community service, and broader exposure to South Asian flavors." - Ashok Selvam

Google
Absolute BEST chicken biryani I’ve ever had! The seasoning on everything is delicious and the naan slaps too. Service is also very friendly and attentive! Paid parking on both sides of the restaurant, and free street parking around the corner as well, so pretty accessible.

The price is amazing especially for the quantity of the food! My fiancé and I came by for some home style Pakistani food and that’s what we got. Both the chicken and lamb biryani were delicious- and the Karachi bun kebabs gives you that authentic vibe like you’re getting street food in Karachi. We will definitely be returning!

The food was horrible. They did make it spicy, but it just wasn’t it at all. Wanted to try something new, but this just was not it. More rice than anything. Barely any sauce. The seasonings did not mesh at all. Just looked oily. I am very upset and most of these reviews are misleading. Maybe the meat is good, but this is not good for vegans!

MashaAllah, everything was delicious, and the generous portions reflect your passion for feeding people! The mirch pakoras were really satisfying, especially paired with the green chutney. The Lahori fish fry was flavorful and lived up to its name. The chicken wrap was a hit, kids absolutely loved it! The rotisserie chicken was amazingly juicy and not dry at all, even with its size. My only input would be to use a smaller chicken to get even more flavor from the skin!

WOOWWWW!!! Exceptional experience at Rickshaw!! I’m not a big fan of desi food but best believe everything I ate at rickshaw was top tier. The other night I ate the half charga chicken with a mango lassi, I can put into words how phenomenal the chicken was. Both meals were cooked to perfection . Now speaking from the service point of view, A1 service. Since I don’t know much about desi food the man at the front was able to cater me towards the best options for me. He was very friendly and a great time. Look forward to coming back and seeing him again!! Highly recommend this spot!!

Google
Great, authentic food and service. Really reasonable prices, and beautiful wall murals too. We got their chicken biryani, beef nihari, & rotisserie chicken. All were good! And afterwards, their gulab jamun was soooo good (it’s usually too sweet for me but this was perfect), desserts come from Al-Hamd bakery down the street. Profit goes towards feeding the un-housed and they make meals in this kitchen and deliver these meals too (not necessarily Pakistani dishes, they told me they change it up when cooking for the un-housed to fit their taste buds & needs). Amazing cause & they do it with dignity. it feels like “eat a meal, donate a meal”. I will definitely be back!

Google
A much needed zabiha halal restaurant in the MCC area. Had the most flavorful rotisserie chicken ever. Looking forward to try the rest of their menu items once they have a grand opening.

Got the butter paneer, palak paneer, and carrot dessert! This is great for affordable food! I am glad there are some vegetarian options and hope to try the lentils next time!

Yelp
Rickshaw is a fairly new place on Pulaski near Elston that serves "Pakistani and Indian street eats". Whenever I have passed by Rickshaw, it looked dead inside. Finally I took the initiative to call them on a late Friday afternoon, prompted by Friday specials listed on its website. When I did call, I was told that those are basically lunchtime specials (11AM-4PM), but the $7 chicken biryani sounds like a really good deal. However, I did order the lamb biryani for dinner pickup. When I arrived, my food was ready to go. I did admire the murals in its two spaces, with the left room being a pickup space and the right being a dining room. The lamb biryani is tasty and a bit zingy with a generous portion of lamb chunks, and for a mere $12 I made two meals out of it. The lamb was indeed boneless and not too tough or fatty, and the rice was fluffy and good to eat even on its own.

Yelp
So excited to have a South Asian spot in the neighborhood! My friends and I came to explore. There were some chairs, but no formal place to sit and eat yet. The owner graciously offered to set up a table for us and let us know of his plans to create a cafe space. We ended up doing takeout and waited around 30 minutes. The owner and staff were very friendly, and accommodating and spent time answering questions about the menu and gave suggestions and shared their ideas with how they want to engage intentionally with the community. Very reasonable prices. We tried, the pakoras, chicken charga, rotisserie wrap, daal, aloo palak and the chicken biryani. The daal and aloo palak were decent. The biryani was delicious and very spicy (which I love but could have used more salt.) The star of the menu, is the chicken charga! Perfect ratio of spice, and crisp. I will be coming here when I'm craving chicken. One tip: I highly recommend ordering a head of time. All in all, I am looking forward to visiting again and eating in person when their cafe space is completed!

Yelp
Rickshaw is a new gem for the neighborhood. I went in unsure of what to order and the owner was able to provide me with excellent recommendations. I loved each item I ordered and felt that it was a great value for what I paid. I ordered the lamb biryani, 1/4 fried chicken, Karachi buns, and vegetarian samosa. This lasted for two meals for two people which was excellent. I recommend trying the Karachi Buns! They are vegetarian and unlike something I have had before. They also have plenty of sauce out with everything and each of them were delicious as well. I'll definitely be back when the indoor dining is finished and open! Once the inside is officially open for dine in I will be back to enjoy the murals and the atmosphere there.

Yelp
Stopped by to grab highway chicken karahi to go and absolutely loved everything- the service was friendly, food was flavorful with the right amount of spice, and the interior is spacious. Absolutely cannot wait to try their samosas as well. Stoked to have a great south asian option in the neighborhood!

Yelp
After watching Rckshaw set up I finally ordered chicken Biryani and Lamb Karhai. I was so glad the food was very tasty and spicy but not too spicy. Portions were generous for the price. The person behind the counter was very helpful. I love the mirrors on the wall. I enjoyed reading their philosophy and how they are helping the unhoused. More businesses need to have this philosophy. I will definitely be going back very soon.

Yelp
This was quite honestly the best cheap meal I've found for fast casual. Clean, hospitable, and the service was amazing. On top of that, some of the best chicken I've ever had with great portions and sides for 7 bucks! Really can't be beat it's between this and Lao Der for me having easy healthy but amazing meals in this neighborhood

Yelp
Came in right at open for a lamb biriyani, service was fast and friendly, and the food was excellent as usual. Restaurant is also very clean! 5/5

Yelp
Fantastic Chicken, good prices and nice service. Will make sure to get the biryani next time as well.

Yelp
Excellent food. Fantastic value. Had enough leftovers for dinner the next day. Got takeout but the restaurant was bright and clean. Definitely recommend. The sliders were the surprise hit of the order.

Yelp
The food was amazing. I got the fried chicken and mango lassi. The fried chicken was so juicy with a crispy exterior. It was the best fried chicken I have ever had. The mango lassi was the perfect balance between sweet and refreshing. The service was great and fast. The artwork on the walls was a nice touch to the space. Overall it was a great experience and I recommend you to try this wonderful place out.
