I have been to some really stellar bakeries lately, which have upped the bar for me. Rilling's deserved 3.5 stars, but customer service made me round down in my final rating.
The staff was friendly, but the young ladies there could not answer any of my questions about, frankly, anything. Could not explain what flavor this or that was, could not tell me what was inside the choco coated mini cakes, could not name the different flavors of pound cake they offer, etc. It was disappointing because I doubt the owners would appreciate this ambassadorship for their well-established business.
What ensued, was a sampling of various items, due to the lack of info. Since it was all such a mystery, we bought more stuff, but we weren't matched-up with our cravings. I ended up having a bite of this and that, but food memories weren't made.
I will say the confections are all made with love and care, and I did not get any saccharine aftertaste from anything, which shows they use quality ingredients. Everything is attractive and well-presented. It's more of a standard basics bakery. They're not doing culinarily daring things here, nor creating show stopping edible atwork. But we're not always in the mood for that kind of stuff anyway. Sometimes you just want a plain old cookie or piece of cake, which is a solid creation by way of flavor, texture, and ingredients. They have that down.
