Gluten-Free-Friendly Restaurants in San Francisco | Eater SF

"This Mission Street shop offers an ultra affordable gluten-free meal for all those out there who pretend eating a meal without wheat costs a million dollars. Beyond the burritos and breaded options, most everything on the menu is made naturally without wheat flour. That’s in part due to the star of the show: The pupusa, in its myriad forms, is made with corn flour or masa and is gluten free." - Paolo Bicchieri

14 Affordable Dining Options in San Francisco

"For a big weekend, one might blow a wad of cash and get the pricier items at this Bernal Heights’ restaurant. Or, one could purchase a plethora of pupusas, a timeless cheap eat. On average each pupusa is just $3, and, to wash it all down, the coffee is even cheaper." - Dianne de Guzman, Paolo Bicchieri

Food is pretty good and staff are friendly but the place can be loud and the service can be slow (they may also mess up your order).

Google
Great Salvadoran restaurant in the Outer Mission. The owner Daisy and staff are very friendly. Great taste & good value. Highly recommended!

Google
The food was mediocre. Not a lot of flavor. Came here because Los Panchos was closed. There was no flavor in the chicharron. The playable were still green and didn’t have that signature sweetness. The frijoles were probably the most edible. Probably wouldn’t recommend it and half of yall are trippin’ on the five star review but that’s whatever.

the minute i stepped into this place i knew food was to be amazing. the place smelled like food! i was correct and in the least disappointed. yum "curtido" is their forté. oh lala the oregano flavor in it added the most perfect infusion of aroma and authentic flavor to the mix. #pupusas were cooked to perfection as was my chicken milanesa. yum

The food here is really bad. I asked for a carne asada plate and the meat was inedible. It was still folded in a way that meat looks like when it's frozen. It had a steamed look to it and the seasoning, if you wanna call it that(looked like knorr chicken bullion), was concentrated heavily to only a corner of the meat. The "salad" that came with it was wilted and the rice mushy and tasteless. My friend ordered a plate of breaded shrimp, they were the super tiny kind you buy frozen from the supermarket, they were gummy and old tasting, accompanied by the same horrible sides that came with my meal. We waited a little bit over an hour for our order so while we waited we asked the lady behind the counter for a drink, since we weren't even offered one by the waitress and asked her how much longer , since we were the only costumers??? She completely ignored us and kept cooking. The waitress finally brought our food but no drinks. We asked HER this time for our drinks, she turned and with her back to us told us we never ordered drinks from her. Long story short, we didnt eat the food , didnt get drinks and ended up paying $57 for pre- frozen crap. The lady behind the counter still had the gull to ask us about the tip and got angry when I wouldn't let her keep the change from the $60 I handed her to pay the bill. My friend let out a frustrated sigh as he shook his head and she got even angrier and told us not to go back. At this point, I had had enough and told her no to worry, I wouldn't go back if her food was free. NO, I DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Google
I ordered a chicken and a bean pupusa which were both tasty, especially along with some hot sauce and beer. The place seemed a tad dark and uninviting, but the servers were nice enough and I got one of the outdoor seats. Not a particularly speedy order, but I guess that's because the pupusas were fresh.

Google
Fairly pricey for mediocre food. Pupusa con queso y pollo was pretty flavourless. The hot sauces made it better but overall a bit of a let down here. Roughly $15 for pupusa combo plate

Mickey Rush

Google
Great pupusas for a good price! I enjoyed the chicharon, queso, y frijoles pupusa and the camaron y queso pupusa (although the latter was mostly cheese). Would definitely return!

Elmer C.

Yelp
The pupusas where alright. Seems over priced for the quality of food. The menu prices are not updated so when it came time to pay the $4 dollar pupusa of shrimp and cheese it turned out to be $8 dollars. The combination plate of pupusas instead of being the price on the menu was more about $3 more. It would have been nice to have a menu with updated prices of at least a heads up about changes in menu price before ordering. Service was okay server seemed busy most of the time but food did come out quickly Tips would be ask for the updated prices before ordering off the menu.

Yelp
We come here a lot since I DJ down the street. My husband and I love the food and service. The pupusas and curtido are always so satisfying. Lately I've been ordering salpicón which comes with rice, fried cheese, plantains, salad, and delicious homemade tortillas. Love their beans too. I'm sure we'll be back to try more soon. Open late!

Yelp
No conchas en el cóctel de conchas. This is what they give you for $23.99 plus tax... No food. Don't waist your time and money . The food and customer service don't worth it
google avatar

Ronnie V.

Yelp
No Dan nada de curtido ... ordene extra y solo una bolsita para una pupusa me alcanzo ... me hicieron triste

Yelp
Rinconcito Salvadoreno has been in the neighborhood for awhile, but since we have 3 or 4 other Salvadoran restaurants, I really only come here late night or when my favorite is closed on Tuesdays. I always order to go, the service has always been a little unfriendly and I can't get out fast enough. I usually order in person, then go to the bar on the corner to wait (St. Mary's). The pupusas are okay, but don't compare to other places - so I usually order something else like tacos or nachos. Everyone seemed to like the Super Nachos the last time I ordered it to go.

Yoshie M.

Yelp
This was my second time going there and for sure last!!!! We order 2 pupusas, combination plate with a side order of rice, 2 bottle cokes, one hot chocolate, a plate de platano frito and chip and salsa they were charging me $68.64 when i was doing the math as a good latina! One of the waitresses (older lady) got mad and offended she keep saying the taxes where not added. ($20 taxes? ) so I added all up total was 45 and cents. Plus 2.50 of credit card with a total of $48 dollars not $68 the other lady (young tall) who was very nice came back and give me my money back and try to explain what happen. Soo people if you decide to go there please check ur recibe. Food is good but costumer service is very bad. I read reviews and a lot of people complaining about the same thing.

Yelp
Good Salvadorian place to come and eat. The food was good. The service was ok. Will come back. Gallo pinto was our go plate. Good coffee as well

Reginald A.

Yelp
Sat down with my daughter to eat lunch here and while we're eating a customer had just finished up. When he got his bill he had to argue that it was wrong. Not sure if he settled it to the correct amount or he just left it the way it was, but he definitely walked out shaking his head. When my bill came out it was also an overcharged by $4 and it was hard to argue about because she barely spoke English and pretended she didn't know what I was saying. So like the guy before me I just walked out shaking my head without leaving a tip. Don't come here! They're over charge people.

Yelp
I had the plátanos con frijoles combo with pupusa. I was glad I was hungry it was plenty of food very delicious.

Yelp
I was excited to try this new place recommend by my uncle, who ate there before and said it was great. My family and I ordered the basic salvadorean plate "pupusas" . I was truly disappointed. The food was awful. I then told the waiter I was not please with the pupusas and that it did not have any flavor at all. I've tried different salvadorean restaurants and this was the worse. She then send the owner out to speak to me, who was rude and very unprofessional. Instead of saying sorry, "is there anything else we can serve you", she started rumbling about how they make their pupusas like I needed a receipt. She was very unapologetic and dismissible. First and last.

Josue G.

Yelp
Jamás he calificado un lugar pero este lugar es el peor lugar salvadoreño q hay los frescos de lo peor las pupusas muy mal echas pero lo peor la limpieza huele muy mal e lugar que lastima

Yelp
This place was my introduction to Pupusas. To this day it's still my favorite Pupuseria. And their Horchata has a really unique flavor that I like above the standard milky cinnamon Horchata that you can get at a lot of Mexican restaurants. It's not a fancy sit down restaurant, but it gets the job done. The new outdoor patio seating is nice. I would love to see them decorate the place a bit to give it more of a Salvadoreño flare. I can't speak to the rest of their menu.

Yelp
***ENGLISH*** Traducción en español abajo*** WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T COME TO THIS PLACE!! I usually go to the Salvadorian place down the block but they were hosting a private event and decided to walk down the street. Bad idea! You get there and you sit wherever you want server comes takes your order and you set. Waiter is bland and just there takes the order and it's done. The cooks and the rest of the staff as saying yelling profanity! When we got our order the yuca was hard I wish I can upload a video to show you and the cheese in my pupusas had gone bad. I have never experienced such an awful place in my life!!! Please do not come here looks like the staff here drink and work and no one cares.

Yelp
Ceviche de Conchas negras is awesome but you have to get there early because they sell out fast

Yelp
I got what I wanted...some bomb pupusas..placed the order over the phone and picked it up.. there where a few other families having brunch and their food looked bomb as well...will definitely try another dish

Yelp
Staff was very nice. The pupusas were very greasy and oily. The cheese had oozed out and burned on while cooking. That was not appealing. The sauce tasted like canned tomato sauce with some additions. The tamales taste super fresh and were delicious. It's cheap and isn't the best. But there's definitely better out there.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious...Family owns...Great food, Great atmosphere, feels like home! Food made with Love! Definitely coming back! Gracious
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Seems to me like they don't really have a strict price menu but tend to overcharge you based on the previous reviews. Came here for a quick tamale and pupusa and was definitely overcharged 50 cents. Not a big deal but based on everyone else they seem to do a rough estimate of the price and than overcharge you - you don't see an itemized receipt. In addition I ordered a to-go order when there was only a few people in the restaurant and it still took over 20 minutes. It's nice to see that the items are built to order, but disappointing that they couldn't be more efficient. Overall the pupusas are good but the customer service is lack-luster and could use some work.

Yelp
A small Salvadorian spot with tables and bar seating. Very warm inside. We sat at the bar and were helped promptly even though they were super busy. Ordered pupusas and shrimp cocktails with octopus. Pupusa's came out first and we dug in. They were cooked perfectly, the right amount of dough to meat and cheese mixture. The curtido here is unlike what we usually have. It was SPICY. To the point where it took away from the typical vinegar tang which really gives a nice flavor to the pupusa. Shrimp Cocktail was served warm, but had decent flavor. Filled with avocado, shrimp, octopus, tomato, onion, lime and salt. It wasn't too bad, but I would have preferred it chilled. I would come here again to pick up some pupusa's when the craving hits!

Yelp
I am a regular here for few years now. I have searched all of San Francisco this place is still my favorite taco spot. I get the combination plate (2 tacos, rice and beans). Sometimes I have so many tacos from here I feel like ordering something different somedays -- that is when I order a Cocktail de Camarone or once in a while when I'm in a Anthony Bourdaine mood I order a whole fried fish and a michelada -- which here is taken to a fine art: served in a chilled goblet perfectly limed and seasoned. Sit back and watch Mission St. ¡Salud!

Ray J.

Yelp
Worst customer service. I had a valid coupon to eat there and was rejected as the owner stated they do not do coupons and would not accept it. She did not even try to validate the coupon. The owner stated her food is too good for coupons. I doubt that and will not support owners with bad business practices.
google avatar

Yelp
Me and my family have been coming to here since I was a child. Back then they had excellent food and great horchata. Now the food is plain and the fries are super dry. The horchata is really bad now and I couldn't even finish the whole cup. I took one sip and immediately asked my family if I could drink some of their soda. The only good dish that I still like is the atol de elote.
google avatar

Jorge O.

Yelp
They steal your money. I order a pupusas menu said 2.65 but they overcharged me. Please avoid this place go somewhere else. They don't even show you the check because they know they are doing something wrong. And this time I check the bill because was so high and asked and the waitress told me oh the pupusas you ordered has 3 ingredients. They are so fool revueltas pupusas has 3 ingredients. AVOID THIS PLACE.!!!!!!
google avatar

Maurice R.

Yelp
Excellent pupusas, great customer service, and the owner personally thanked me for supporting her business. There was a little confusion at first, as I had bought a Restaurants.com voucher and tried to use it here. After showing it to her on my phone, I was told she knew nothing about it. Other than that small blip, the food hit the spot and I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Gina R.

Yelp
Really bad service! Food was nasty the meat was rotten and I paid for my drink and never got it. They should be more careful and inspect that place!
google avatar

Brenda S.

Yelp
Authentic Salvadorian food! Owned by good people and had a good atmosphere. THE PUPUSAS! Soooo good! Also their Botana plate as an appetizer is really good too! Fried Cheese! Give it try!
google avatar

Chapito F.

Yelp
Delisious Food, had pupusas of chicharon and queso. As well as wings and shrimp. It was off the Hook! Best Salvadoran food in Mission district. Staff was very polite fast and spontaneous! Coming back soon!

Yelp
Me and my family make it a point to come here whenever we visit the city. The quality of the food has really gone down, and the service too. Some of the waitresses were pretty rude, some are pretty nice though. We came in and just awkwardly stood at the entrance for a minute until a waitress came up and awkwardly stood next to us for a minute before saying anything. You pretty much pick where you want to sit, if anything is available.I ended up getting sick from the food, unfortunately. The chorizo was pretty much black on the outside, the onion on the steak tasted of being drenched in butter, and the casamiento was pretty bland and hard. The plates are hit or miss. The music was WAY too loud and the owner sits around drinking beer with customers at the "bar." (cheers to her, I guess) I'm not sure if I will be visiting this establishment in the future.

Daniel L.

Yelp
Great customer service. I had a big order for a birthday party and they had the order ready for me at pick up time. The food was excellent and plenty of it. Very good pupusas with a number of options to choose from. The plantains were perfectly done. The pico de Gallo May be some of the best in the city. I recommend getting pupusas and a meal here
google avatar

Ramon E.

Yelp
Good! I have to take off a star, to start with, because I think the prices are simply too high. I'm kind of over paying $10 for a small plate of rice, beans and fried plantains. The fried plantains were very good, though. The rice and beans were fine, as were the chips and salsa. They were eager to accommodate my vegan requests, and made me a beans-only pupusa, which was warm and good. We went (for the second time) on New Year's Eve, and it was packed with happy customers, drinking Coronas and watching rather loud Spanish-language TV. A pretty upbeat place to have a meal, really. The bathroom is clean.

Yelp
Best papusas and sopa de pata around! My husband is from El Salvador and this is the closest to home he can find. We drive all the way from Santa Cruz to eat here.
google avatar

Yani H.

Yelp
Food was good especially the cocktail, it didn't have too much clamato so it didn't over power the lime. Loved there salsa for the pupusas and the horchata. friendly waitress. We didn't have to wait for our food long. I will definitely come back to this place when I'm in sf.
google avatar

Eclectic C.

Yelp
While the nachos are super yummy, I haven't been back to this place in months thanks to the unneccesarily rude service I received. My first visit I had to wait 15 minutes to get nachos with no one ahead of me. I'm not exaggerating with the time since I kept checking my cell phone. The owner or mgr, the older lady with glasses, was pretty nice and chatted with me which made the wait not so bad. However, on my second visit, her attitude did a complete 180. She took my order, I paid in advance since I knew I would have to wait. I waited and waited again. One of the girls finally brought my order to me, and then asked me if I paid. I said yes and showed her my ticket/ receipt. Then the owner who charged me had the nerve to get an attitude and ask me if I paid. Um, I'm the only customer in here and you can't remember that 15 min ago I paid you? I mean get the F outta here! I was so annoyed. So needless to say I wont be frequenting this spot whatsoever.

Wendy M.

Yelp
Worst place ever food is bad , place sucks to be honest . The waitress are nice but if they want more people to come in they should make their food right ordered breakfast plate and my eggs were burned and the other half weren't cook right they were all watery. The price for a plate with burnt / watery eggs , beans that weren't liquified all the way , fried plantains and a hard ass piece of cheese was 12 dollars I could've made this at home 10 times better now I know I won't come here again first and last time. Thank you
google avatar

Yelp
This was my first Salvadorean food in years after being out of the country. I had the combinacion Salvadorean, which was steak, a stuffed pepper, rice, beans and salad. The food was delicious and I enjoyed every bite of it. I would give it 4 1/2-5 stars all day. I gave the review only 3 stars because while I appreciate how authentic the food was, from a business standpoint, there is a chance of some people not being able to eat there because they don't speak any Spanish. I speak enough to get by, so it wasn't much of a challenge ordering, just had to dust off the linguistics. I would definitely return to this restaurant. As a matter of fact, I may be going there next week/weekend for some more delicious food!
google avatar

Jonas T.

Yelp
We had a really hard time ordering here because our waitress didn't speak English, but she was really nice and patient, and I guess no English adds to the authenticity, right?. They do have pictures of a lot of their dishes, so that helped out a lot. What's really good here is their pupusas. I learned about them because my mom's coworker would used to bring them her workplace and share them. The pupusas didn't disappoint. I wasn't too impressed the the milanesa (battered beef) because it seemed like something I could whip up at home, but at least the beef was tender. Overall, I'd go back, especially since I'm two blocks away. JONASAPPROVED!
google avatar

Nancy R.

Yelp
Their sopa de gallina sucks the soup has no flavor & the only vegetables it has is zuchinni & potato. & gallina very greasy. pupusas reveltas extremely salty. Don't understand why my husband likes their food

Hermen C.

Yelp
Food is delicious I ordered shrimps and steak .........................highly recommended this place

Martin R.

Yelp
Great little place...my favorite dish there is the meat and shrimp combo. yummm
google avatar

Jay R.

Yelp
The best burrito in sf. Takes 20 min to make; has grilled onions, quality ingredients and drips with juice.
google avatar

Tom B.

Yelp
Ate here on Saturday before Brides of March. Tried the pupusas, the shrimp tostadas, and the fried plantain with sour cream and refried black beans. All were delicious. The shrimp tostadas came on a thick homemade corn masa "shell' rather than a crispy tortilla. It was similar to a pupusa with no filling -- maybe it was more like a gordita? Really enjoyed the way the black beans were seasoned (probably with lots of lard!) Beer selection is limited and all prices are a bit expensive. The menu listed sangria but when I asked for it the waitress said it was not available. Picked this place more or less at random from 3 or 4 Salvadoran restaurants within about a 1-block radius. Would be interested in trying some of the other places nearby to see how they compare.
google avatar

Yelp
There's very few good ambiance el salvadoran restos in the outer mission, but this is one of them. It's very well-lighted, not too small, has 2 giant wall tvs for sports with everyone in front with them cheering. The customers enjoy the food and family groups of 4 or more people regularly come in with babies and young kids. It's not formal so jeans & sneakers are in. At first, i thought you had to go to the cashier to order and they would call you to get it. Nope. You CAN do that if you want takeout, but they are a FULL fleged restaurant- -you can pick a table and they'll come to serve you. The hosts speak very little english so grab a menu near the back in front of the cashier (or they'll bring you one at yout table) and bring your spanish dictionary or translator app. Their service is courteous & fast. Their menu says there's a $15 CC minimum limit. They have many types off pupusas which are juicy. They give way too much liquidy hot sauce for takeout and their cole slaw is soft & overly liquidy. But, over all, it's a nice place to stop to rest for el Salvadoran food & Mexican food or to go. Their Mexican foods are: burritos, tacos, nachos, super quesadilla, tamales. The 23 bus comes nearby as well as the 14 & 49 & 14R buses.

Cristian R.

Yelp
Place is clean, staff is friendly, food is good. Extra star for being open late with good food. Must try the Pupusas.

Austin J.

Yelp
Great pupusas, good price, friendly owner. Let me crash a bday party and hooked up the extra beans & crema for free. Will return.
google avatar

Juliette G.

Yelp
Ordered takeout: grilled chicken, carne asada, and two pupusas. They said it would be ready in 15 min; it took 45. Food mediocre. Will not come back.
google avatar

Karen G.

Yelp
Really bad service, the server was unpleasant and rude, we were not even greeted. To top it off, the servers and owner are more interested in selling beer to their overdrunk customers. Boyfriend had a drunk woman fall on him! Ended up having food order packed to go. Will not be coming back and neither should you.
google avatar

Ben H.

Yelp
Great prices, really tasty. Could tell there were lots of regulars. It's a party in here later at night, even if you don't speak the language.
google avatar

J M.

Yelp
This spot is cool for some Salvadoran typical dishes and of course popusas! The only thing that can improve is the wait time for service and overall customer service. The overall service is good, but the attentiveness of the waiters is not the best. They can take forever to ring you up, bring you menus, etc.. Other than that pretty good especially late night.
google avatar

Marie S.

Yelp
I took my friend the other day and we were craving pupusas... Well, there was a roach on the wall next to our table. I told one of the waitresses about and she just looked at me with a blank face and simply walked away! Uh, can you at least pretend to care somewhat?
google avatar

Pam R.

Yelp
In the past month, the owner has had new windows & doors put in the place. Unfortunately, the restaurant is still dark; & the food is still unappetizing.
