2024 Best Cities for Coffee in the World

"Los Angeles isn't the only city in California with a fantastic coffee scene. Its neighbor to the north, San Francisco, also has plenty to offer by way of caffeinated treats at shops like Ritual Coffee Roasters, founded here in SF in 2005 and beloved for its transparency in direct trade." - Stacey Leasca

Despite Restaurant Closings on Valencia in the Mission, Business Owners Remain Optimistic - Eater SF

"At Ritual Coffee just a few blocks east, Eileen Rinaldi is getting more and more people in her coffee shop as the pandemic shutdowns of 2020 and their immediate impacts move into the rearview. The longtime coffee shop is back to hosting art openings and remote workers." - Paolo Bicchieri

"Many credit Ritual with being the first truly gourmet coffee shop in the city. Now, 10 years and four bustling S.F. locations later, they still brew arguably the best cup in town. Because people have been known to get hooked on their meticulously sourced blends, a coffee club was launched to make sure out-of-towners can get their hands on the good stuff. "

If you’re a true coffee lover, this spot is a must-visit. The coffee is rich, smooth, and clearly crafted with care. The staff are warm and welcoming, making the experience even better. The atmosphere is artistic and relaxed, with colorful wall art and creative energy. It’s a perfect place to unwind or catch up with friends over a great cup. Definitely a standout for both quality brews and good vibes.

Google
One of my favorite coffee spots in SF. Ritual serves excellent third wave coffee with great attention to detail. I also love that it’s female-owned and supports women producers. Definitely worth a visit if you care about quality and ethics.

I visited Ritual Coffee Roasters unexpectedly while walking down the street after lunch. I didn’t plan to stop by, but I’m glad I did. I ordered an espresso and a latte. While I drink coffee every day, I wouldn’t consider myself a coffee expert. To be honest, I couldn’t really tell much difference between their coffee and what I usually get from Peet’s Coffee. That’s not to say it was bad — the coffee was solid, just nothing that stood out to me personally. The café environment was quite nice, though. People were relaxing, reading books, and working on their laptops. It had a calm vibe that made it a comfortable place to unwind or focus. They also have two restrooms, which is convenient. Overall, I enjoyed the visit. The atmosphere was pleasant, but I didn’t find anything particularly surprising or unique about their coffee. If you’re in the area and looking for a chill spot to relax, it’s worth checking out.

Google
One of the nicest coffee shops I've tried in the city. We ordered a cortado and a flat white. This is actually the only coffee shop we've tried in the city where the drink temperature was not scaling hot, so we were able to enjoy the drink and really taste the coffee.

Google
Gen Z attitudes from “new-age” workers, and sadly you pay a premium plus tip to experience that. The food was absolute garbage, the scone literally exploded in the bag it was so dry. I couldn’t even eat it. There is no wifi and also no signal, so it’s like being in a black hole. There was a door inexplicably open to an outdoor trash area with a fan in the doorway blowing the smell of garbage into the cafe. Overall a bizarre experience not worth repeating.

Grace Lin

Google
Beautiful cafe in Mission district. One of the most popular ancestor of coffee revolutions!

Mart Schunk

Google
Great place for specialty coffee in the Mission. Had a cortado, and while it tasted a little too acidic for my taste, I can still see the great care and prep the baristas put into their brews. Overall, really loved the ambiance of the café and was positively surprised by how much seating was available.

Emilio

Google
Nice clean coffee roaster store to chill and work on your computer, there is seating outside surrounded by the eye catcher half hull of a boat resting on the side structure at Valencia street. When I visited on an early evening there was ample space to seat inside.

Yelp
3 stars for the coffee 4 stars for the interior and overall experience During the time I was studying for a board exam, I needed a new spot. I decided to try Ritual one day i was craving a vanilla latte (this was around december of 2024). At this time, they don't not serve vanilla lattes. An employee kindly recommended another specialty seasonal iced espresso drink that I sadly cannot remember the name of. The coffee was just ok to me especially for the price and small size that's offered. It's flavors created a combination that was not super enjoyable to me. The espresso flavor was there, though. Studying here was a nice experience. it's a large shop with plenty of seating. It was nice to observe the beautiful art work inside and the general goings on. Now that they serve vanilla lattes, I am interested in trying them out again but otherwise would not have considered coming back for an espresso drink.

Yelp
Solid coffee spot near Dolores Park. Grabbed an ice americano, relaxed a bit at the cafe, and then walked around Dolores Park. Coffee was pretty good and the cafe was low key with lots of seating and space. I would recommend this place and will definitely be back!

Yelp
$8 for a small hot chocolate and no WiFi. What coffee shop does not offer WiFi? Customer service is eh! 1 star overall

Yelp
The coffee is great. We came here on vacation and it hit the spot. We love pour overs here and they definitely did a great job at making a delicious cup of coffee. The coffee bean selection is great. They have a nice green space in the back. Overall, it's a solid place to get a good pour over.

Yelp
Still one of the best coffee places in SF for both customer service and the coffee. Tried their new HK milk tea spin with the cookie. Cookie was a skip but the HK milk tea cold was decent. Super great space to hang out and catch up with friends, and the coffee is not bitter.
google avatar

Yelp
I wanted a cup of coffee and stopped by this place as we were walking by. Deciding to try something different, I went for the Chinatown VIP. It took about 5-10 minutes to get our drink. The interior looked pretty nice, clean, and classy with a good amount of space to sit down and chat or do work. They initially forgot about the cookie but grabbed it for us when we asked. The drink was interesting and did taste like Hong Kong milk tea with a slight roastiness from the coffee. To be honest, it was much more milk tea forward and not as coffee-like as I expected, and I didn't really like that. I'm not sure what about it I didn't like, maybe I thought the floweriness of the milk tea and the coffee flavor did not go well together. The sesame cookie was just the same kind you can get from Asian supermarkets. Overall, I would not get this drink again, but it was intriguing, and I may try one of their other drinks later on.

Yelp
date visited: 09.21.2024 ordered: cold brew cold brew has a nice flavor profile -- a little sweet but still having that nice dark espresso flavor. i enjoyed it and it seems like they know how to roast, grind, and extract their beans here. my friend got one of their seasonal chai latte drinks and it was really good. not too sweet, creamy, and nice spice flavor. will be back to try more

Yelp
I bought a croissant and asked to cut it in half to which the guy replied sorry we don't have a knife. That is ridiculous. You're a coffee shop. Also see my photos below. That is baby changing station in their bathroom. I will not be supporting this business anymore.

Yelp
Matcha latte was great and the location is perfect for shopping and going to the park:)

Yelp
Like the other Ritual locations I've been to, the coffee quality was good. I got the "La Lecheria" from Costa Rica, which is brewed by the cup. This cup started off with a tartness and ended with a lighter, rounder note at the end (key lime, graham cracker, and red plum, as described by their menu). I liked how it was fruity in a more subtle way. I liked the ambiance of the place (super clean with a lot of wooden seating). The service was fine.
google avatar

Yelp
When Ritual opened it set a bar for espresso drinks in the Mission. Now it's a pretty normal quality imo. Pastries are meh. The butter croissant is the worst kind, like a doughy loaf and zero flakiness. Atmosphere is good! Spacious bright interior. Laptops are most sequestered to the dark back. The service was disappointing at my last visit. Bagged my croissant and put my drink in a to-go cup when I was planning to sit down. Nobody asked me here or to-go.
google avatar

Yelp
There is no sense of urgency here. That's odd, because coffee is that thing you need before you do a ton of other things. So you would think they would do whatever they can to get you in and out ASAP. But the staff here can't be bothered. They're just too cool to rush. As I watched staffers talking about their weekend I realized: I was never going to get my coffee by the time I needed to leave. Finally I just told them to gift my two lattes to someone else: Naturally they didn't care. I was just one of those male Karens who was bothering them.

Yelp
This location of Ritual Coffee is big and airy and seems surprisingly new and clean given that this location has been around for a while. There is quite a bit of seating which was sparsely used on a quiet weekday morning. There were a couple of tables of people working as the location seems like a good one for work. There are two restrooms in the back.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop, plenty of space to sit and work on laptop or work. Chai tea was really good! Staff were very pleasant.

Yelp
This place is a true gem for coffee lovers like myself. I strolled into Ritual and was greeted by a sleek and modern ambiance. The clean and inviting interior design instantly caught my eye. The combination of contemporary furnishings, warm lighting, and a relaxed atmosphere created the perfect setting. These aesthetic coffee shops always catches my eye and I definitely enjoy it. The place is very spacious and since it has a lot of tables it's a great place to meet friends or study. I settled on a regular latte with oat milk, my usual. Let me tell you, it was a sip of perfection. I'm very picky with the way my latte is made. The barista's skills were on point, crafting a velvety smooth latte with just the right balance of rich espresso and creamy oat milk. The flavor was spot on, and it gave me the boost I needed. Ritual's location on Valencia St. so if you are familiar with the area you know, but if not I must warn you, parking can be a bit of a challenge in this area. Cheers to coffee adventures and moments of relaxation at Ritual!

Yelp
Cute shop, I got the day off in Kyoto - a hojicha latte. It's more milky than hojicha-y but wasn't bad.

Yelp
Drinks: 4/5 Service: 4/5 I've been to this location a couple of times and they make pretty good coffee. They don't have vanilla which sucks, not able to get my go-to iced vanilla lattes, but it's okay. It's sometimes a little inconsistent when I order drinks. I enjoy my drinks a little sweeter, but since they don't have vanilla, they use other syrups or sugar. Sometimes a barista will add sweetener (I think some kind of syrup?) in the drink but sometimes they'll ask me to pour the sugar myself on the side, where they keep the lids and everything. I like it when they do it for me, because it doesn't taste the same with the sugar they offer on the side - but it definitely depends on the barista whenever I go. The inside is very cute and there's lots of seating available, but it does get busy, especially on the weekends. Parking is a little hard because it's in such a busy area.

Yelp
Super lovely place to grab a Sunday morning coffee and do some work/journaling. The line got crowded at 11 am, but I popped in a few minutes before that and only had 1-2 people ahead. I ordered the OMFG (vanilla cardamom latte), and it was a great balance of spices, coffee, and creaminess. Would recommend for those who want a lighter coffee flavor but still a good kick/light sweetness! And not extra for oat milk for this latte :) It is definitely a large space with lots of nooks to find a seat for you or a small group, and pro tip, if you sit in the corner near the bathroom, there's an outlet across the bathroom. Saw this on a "best coffee of SF" list and I'd def come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by on a whim while waiting for brunch. The line/crowd gave me high hopes. I decided to try something outside of my comfort zone. For $6, I got the tropicana: a taro coconut espresso con panna. It sounded interesting but was not what I was expecting, and I guess that's my fault for trying something new. It was creamy and a fun concept, but the flavors didn't work well for my palate and I think the ratio was kinda odd. It didn't combine well and the taro coconut was so overpowering because of the amount. As others have pointed out, the music choice is definitely not what you'd expect from a coffee shop. It's kinda aggro, which didn't make me want to stay long. If you're planning on doing work there, bring headphones. Plenty of tables though.
google avatar

Elisa C.

Yelp
Was waiting for brunch at Alnico's and this is right nextdoor! Had great seating areas and people got to do work. It gets cold in the back. Staff are always kind and sweet. I tried the Dandelion mocha and wasn't to my liking (but it may be to personal preference, also doesn't taste like your usual mocha). My partner loved his drink!
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
popped in here to grab a bag of coffee and a cortado, and it was mostly a great experience haha. it's just nextdoor to an outdoor fitness area, which is just about the oddest thing i could expect to spectate while sipping my fancy coffee, but it was free entertainment. the barista said some days they screen movies there, which sounded cute. i'm not sure if they barista was just a little tired that day, but when i asked for a cortado and the bag of beans, she misunderstood and thought i'd asked for the bag pre-ground (gasp!) "for cortado" (?). we laughed off the miscommunication and she tossed in the drink on the house, which was super kind.

Yelp
Ritual Coffee is very quintessentially SF: a local, small-batch, responsibly sourced roastery and cafe with a flagship store in the Mission, featuring minimalist aesthetics, a $6.75 mocha with Dandelion chocolate, and a communist-inspired logo. I stopped by recently while walking by in the Mission, and Ritual seems more down-to-earth than my last visit a few years ago when everything seemed a tad bit too hipster and almost pretentious. The menu is straightforward, service is friendly and efficient, and the coffee does not disaapoint. I got a cold brew which was a hefty $5.50 for a surprisingly small cup (8 oz I think, with half the space taken up by ice). It doesn't take a coffee connoisseur to appreciate the craft cold brew, with distinct velvety chocolatey notes. But still, I don't know if I can rave about a coffee shop with $4.25 espresso shots (+$1.25 for single origin) and no wi-fi.
google avatar

Jason K.

Yelp
Got the batch brew (traditional drip coffee). Was a tad bitter for my tastes, even with milk, but otherwise smooth. Gave me my caffeine fix in the end, so no complaints. Style points for the coffee sleeve.
google avatar

Jazmine V.

Yelp
Struggling to eat at a brunch restaurant on a Sunday is real! So my sister and I popped in at Ritual Coffee for a quick breakfast fix. We ordered Dandelion Mocha, butter croissant, and a pumpkin muffin. All 5/5!! For the Dandelion Mocha, they use the chocolate from the Dandelion Chocolate company - an SF local business. We liked that it had a dark chocolate taste versus milk chocolate. Butter croissant had a nice crunch, also flaky and airy, so good! The pumpkin muffin was the right amount of sweet.

Yelp
I went to Ritual Coffee on Valencia in S.F. yesterday. I had such a good time! They hosted a book release / signing party and art show. You can take BART to 24th & Mission; its a short walk to Ritual Coffee on Valencia. The author was meeting & greeting & signing his book. He was really pleasant and kinda cute. * I asked him to sign my book " to my good friend Darcy " (even though we just met) and he did! I had a house coffee that was really delish. (not to strong & no jitters afterwards) It was also refreshing to get away from the 'Silicon Valley' tech influencers on the Peninsula. And hang with a bunch of hipsters, intellectuals & crazy people in S.F. I read my newly signed book at the BART station for 1.5 hrs. (while they figured out which direction the trains should go) Check out Ritual Coffee in S.F. when you get a sec. you won't be disappointed. Just don't be in a hurry to get home if you get there by BART. I bought 3 Ritual canned coffees togo for my son.

Yelp
Friendly cashier, lots of good recommendations, iced tea comes in a highball glass (no waste), pour over coffee via v60 setup. Was told there's no Wi-Fi? I was a bit confused since all the photos show people on their laptops, thought it was a good working space, but the noise and clanging of things and lack of Wi-Fi made it a bit hard to work. Beautiful interior, space for artists and creatives to meet, less for techies. It's a landmark that people visit from other countries. Highly recommend. You might be asked to present vaccine cards.
google avatar

Yelp
Must go to coffee shop in SF, their mocha is from dandelion chocolate and is very tasty. It's a little pricey but good quality coffee. Service is great and ambiance is great for working, studying, or catching up with friends

Annabelle O.

Yelp
My friends and I were craving a cup of coffee on our little shopping trip, so we ducked inside this shop since it was the first we saw. The inside is really pretty and clean, definitely really aesthetic, but the quality of the coffee itself seems to be a bit lacking. The drink I got, the BBL, was about $9 with tax (an extra dollar for oat milk), making it one of the most expensive lattes I've ever bought. It ended up giving me a headache, though, because the coffee was suuper bitter, leaving me to believe burnt beans were used. The blueberry portion of the drink itself was honestly kind of overly sweet in a pretty anticlimactic way too. The person working the cashier was pretty far from friendly, too. Overall, maybe a nice place to sit and do work? Lots of cute plants. That's kind of it though. The coffee was pretty terrible. :(
google avatar

Caitlin S.

Yelp
Now that COVID is "over" just want to say I love their indoor seating. It's spacious and chill and has a good vibe. A great place to do work or read. Service can be a little slow. But again, I highly recommend this spot for daytime WFH.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
It was such a beautiful day for a coffee on Valencia St in San Francisco. So I went, the cold brew was perfect and came second in my favorite part of the day to the stellar service from the staff. They greeted me warmly and offered suggestions after getting to know a bit about me. After getting the drink I went to sit down to get started on my overdue homework, there weren't enough tables for a ton of people and there were no outlets to plug in my computer or wifi available for patrons. I stayed for about three hours, because my batteries were going to die eventually and it was drafty inside, getting work done. The cafe was beautifully appointed with light wooden furniture and art for sale along the back wall. It was a cute shop for a beautiful day.
google avatar

Miriam S.

Yelp
Great coffee, great pain au chocolat and beautiful setting. We got a bag of beans ground for us to take away and enjoy. The cheapest bag was $23 but we've appreciated good coffee every morning where we are staying since!
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
NO WIFI. Tried the iced chai (watery, bland), house brew (sour), Valenciana (just okay) otherwise the space is nice though
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
I have reviewed this place before and I will review it again. One of my favorite coffee shops. They make delicious lattes. I went on a Sunday afternoon and it was very busy. I believe they have pre orders which I will do next time. Since I did not pre order I did wait 10 minutes for a simple latte. Still it was worth it and I understand there were only two people making several drinks. I still recommend this spot for coffee and I like that they ask people for proof of vaccination. I will be back and next time I will make sure to pre order online.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
I ordered a latte and tipped 50% because I'm an idiot. I had to take a phone call suddenly and to be respectful of others I took it outside. When I came back, the barista said she threw out my latte because she "called it out four times. Now I have to remake it!" And she had literal tween attitude. I didn't trust her not to spit in it and left. Consider that wasted $9 a parting gift. Mama out.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
A charming location with a staff that takes craft coffee seriously and has the skill to back it up. Great raw materials coupled with proper shots, artfully crafted beverages and even their tea steeping method is incredible.
google avatar

Fiona Y.

Yelp
My go to coffeeshop, especially when Ethiopian single origin is available. Did you know coffee originated in Ethiopia? I love a lighter roast that has caramel and toffee notes. I pick up beans here and make my own espresso at times but much prefer my lattes to be made for me. Definitely one of the freshest, most flavorful beans in the city, and one of the top reasons I am addicted to coffee.
google avatar

Therese S.

Yelp
Sipped my Dandelion chocolate mocha while reading last Sunday and it was wonderful -- I love the coffee, the kind baristas, and the general atmosphere at Ritual! Great place to get work done or catch up with friends!
google avatar

Micah W.

Yelp
Come here if you like over priced drinks , crap atmosphere ( peep the hard ass seats in my photo ) purposely covered outlets so you can't charge your device .. I mean the list of why this place sucks goes on and on

Timothy P.

Yelp
Cavernous interior welcomes many. Seats vary from pads on benches to artsy wooden things more comfortable than they appear. I have yet to come in even on a busy SATURDAY AND NOT FIND A SEAT. Please don't jinx this now that I've shared it. Park let outside is also pleasant. The teas are nice but itis coffee coffee coffee that should bring you here. Some oddball/interesting house confections I have yet to try. The plain house brew is amazing. Yes -- amazing. Don't doctor the first sip. Just enjoy it before adding anything else you may think you're gonna need. Stellar macchiato too -- my general go -to in artsy Mission coffee places because it's a thing. Nice servers. No attitude. Helpful and like talking about the products.
google avatar

Sara E.

Yelp
I had their OMFG signature drink and it was delicious! I highly recommend this drink to all the cardamom/ vanilla fans out there!
google avatar

Josephine L.

Yelp
I understand why this is a local favorite. They serve solid coffee. Prices are average and always love the latte art addition. The coffee wasn't as fragrant as I had liked but could also be because of the oat milk they used.
google avatar

Candice H.

Yelp
This place is very cute spacious and comfy. Plenty of seating with two individual bathroom stalls. Back of the cafe has a large window with tropical plants making it appear a bit less city-busy. Coffee of course is great and their tea is delightfully served in a clay pot on a wooden tray. There's of course pastries, mostly if the sweet kinds, but a vegan sausage croissant roll as well. I was tempted, but I didn't dig in. For the healthier eaters, there's housemade granola with Chobani Greek yogurt. Outlets along one of the walls for those laptop users but expect to tether your own. Don't forget the coffee card, buy 10 get 1 free, Apple Pay and great service.
google avatar

Denise M.

Yelp
I stumbled upon Ritual Coffee and really enjoyed their seasonal drink on a cold morning! Although a lot of people had called out their service, I honestly did not have any issues. We were in and out of there in around 10 minutes, mind you it was a bit crowded. But nothing not worth the wait! I couldn't find the drink on the menu but it was a seasonal drink and it was delicious! I would definitely go back to try their other options.
google avatar

Naina S.

Yelp
I've had the Dandelion Mocha, their goat cheese knot, and the Moonlight Swim. The only thing I particularly enjoyed was the mocha but the other two I was okay with. The knot was way too over salted and I couldn't even finish it. The moonlight swim was good but I don't think I personally would get it again. Although, the reason this review is a 4 and not a 3 is because of the Dandelion Mocha. It's such a great way to enjoy the chocolate in a drink with some caffeine. It has a more bitter dark chocolate taste and I absolutely love it, I highly recommend to anyone coming to Ritual for the first time.
google avatar

Lina B.

Yelp
i came in to try Rex's signature drink, tropicana and am in looooove. Tay was kind, informative, and helpful. service is quick with a low wait time, music is awesome, and the new additions/redesign makes the space feel comfortable. love seeing the baristas reflected in the business!

Paula G.

Yelp
Super friendly staff! Cozy ambiance, I loved the decoration, and the coffee was great. I'll come back :)

Amy J.

Yelp
They had good coffee and nice people at the counter helping us. The doughnuts from pebbles were yummy too!
google avatar

Brittany R.

Yelp
Snagged a great iced almond milk latte this morning while on a walk. Loved that they have sustainable straws that aren't thin paper! It held up well. Would recommend.
google avatar

Mahesh N.

Yelp
Had an average mocha. Interior is nice. No Wifi, which is extremely annoying when you pay for overpriced coffee and donuts. Don't come here if you to get work done and you have T-Mobile.
