‘You Could See Your Breath in the Bar’: What It’s Like Working at a Restaurant During an Ice Storm | Eater Portland

"I coordinated with the owners and team to figure out weekend staffing, and Davide and I split up employees to pick them up and drive them home so they wouldn’t worry about transportation; we had full staffing through the weekend because many people could walk. We closed early on Tuesday around 3 p.m. so everyone could get home safely, but stayed open other days—DJ Motaz played Saturday through Monday—and it was busy with regulars who knew we’d likely be open and wanted a place to go, so people enjoyed themselves despite the weather." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

I visited on a Saturday afternoon, and it was much less busy than I expected. Plenty of seating inside and outside. They have decently large tap list - a beer for everyone including sours and NAs. I ordered the River Pig Pilsner and it was nice and light, nothing special though (but what do you expect out of a Pilsner). My husband ordered the Bells Oberon Wheat Ale and it was delicious, although not an in-house brew. We also ordered wings with the dry rub and they were great - the rub was very flavorful and a bit spicy. The other menu items looked good but we just needed a snack. Honestly shocked this place was not more crowded. There is a TON of seating inside and outside and the vibes are great. I will be back!

River Pig is the perfect spot for a casual night out! I went with my boyfriend, and we had a blast. The atmosphere is laid-back but still buzzing with energy, making it a great place to relax and enjoy the evening. We ordered some wings and fries, and they were just right—crispy, flavorful, and with just the right amount of spice. I tried a drink called the Fresh Press, and it was delicious—refreshing, with a great balance of flavors. The service was friendly and quick, even with the weekend crowd. If you’re looking for a fun spot with good food, tasty drinks, and a lively vibe, River Pig is definitely worth a visit. We’ll definitely be back!

It was an awesome experience to watch college football game here. Serive is great and so is the food

Google
Cool little spot for a drink and good food. The nachos were very good. The steak was ok, a little chewy and they were trying a brownie. It was dusty and fell apart. Probably forgot an ingredient but over all good spot

Google
I’m a whole pizza snob so I expected a lot. The honey drizzle was a refreshing surprise. Try it and let me know. Overall I enjoyed the atmosphere (to watch the Women’s March Madness game) but I’ll go back to try more food. I’m also trying to remember the location in Portland but it’s escaping my brain but be mindful that VooDoo Donuts is right down the street so if you need a taste of Oregon, this strip in Lower Greenville will take care of you!

Google
Freshly made guacamole and juice in their cocktails. Everything was made with love. Great parking available on the side and front. Big patio! There’s a well priced happy hour. Chips and guac were only $5!!

Google
Hate to give you guys anything less than 5 stars cause the service was on point. Ali was so nice and welcoming, and the chef himself came out and gave me my Spicy Chicken Sandwich. But the sandwich wasn't very tasty, unfortunately. The chicken pieces smelled very chickeny! And the bun didn't taste or feel very fresh tbh. It was just not a very tasty chicken sandwich/ Burger and not spicy at all...

Mark J.

Google
Great restaurant, perfect for lower Greenville. The steak salad was cooked perfectly. Wonderful choices for cold draft beers and delicious cocktails. Check this place out tonight.

Yelp
Really good for and service. We watched an OU game here and the brunch was fantastic!

Ryan A.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on Saturday and the drinks were good and the margarita pizza was delicious 10/10!

Mike B.

Yelp
Saturday game day, ordered Nachos at 12:15 was told you can't get Nachos until 1:00! WTH?? Ridiculous
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for trivia night on weds. Service was quick and friendly. Had house margarita, margarita pizza and pepperoni pizza. Food was tasty and drink was strong. Go check them out! Love that get have a big space where you can be indoors or outdoors and watch different games on their many tvs.

Yelp
Brunch experience was ok. We sat outside. We sat there looking at the menu on our phone. There wasn't a QR or menus at the table we had already been looking at the menu prior to coming. Saw a sign posted at the bar window that read seat yourself and order here. After about ten minutes we decided on what we wanted and went up to the bar but nobody helped us. We had to stop a server to ask if we could order. We didn't know it was brunch only so we had to go back and review the menu. He asked if we had menus. We told him nobody had been over to greet our table Bacon breakfast sandwich was ok. Nothing spectacular flavor wise. I was excited about the jam but it honestly didn't taste like much. I was not expecting regular medley potatoes. They lacked flavor. They were salted but that's it. Steak and eggs were good but the portion was really small. Looked like a a 6oz (mayyybe) steak. The chorizo hollandaise sauce was good. The star of the show was the chicken and waffles. The chicken was lightly breaded and really juicy. I really liked that it was a fillet than the usual chicken tenders. Although the service wasn't the best I would definitely go back for the chicken and waffles. Parking was good for a Saturday around 11am. We didn't have trouble finding a spot in their lot on the side of the building.

Yelp
My friend and I were looking for a restaurant in a neighborhood of Dallas north of downtown. We saw one named "River Pig Saloon" and decided to go there because of the name. (Seriously!) It happened to be a Tuesday, their "half price" night. But even if we had to pay full price, their prices were reasonable. We had a couple of excellent beers on tap (at half price!). I had one of the most delicious hamburgers ever. No joke! Great fries too. Excellent, friendly service. I would go here again in a minute. Well, not a minute because I live in California. But next time I'm in Dallas, for sure.

Yelp
Great little spot! Came in to watch an Aggie football game. Was crowded but was still able to find a place to sit. Good little bar
google avatar

Abigail G.

Yelp
Came here to watch the game with a couple of friends and get some food. The parking was great! They have a lot with plenty of parking. The ambiance was perfect for a group of friends! The cocktails were decent, they could be a little stronger. The service was good for having a big group. I got a chicken sandwich and didn't like it much.

Rich D.

Yelp
We didn't eat although the food looked very good. Watched college football and had a bucket of beer which was very reasonable. Nice outdoor patio and lots of football fans! Fun atmosphere!
google avatar

Stephanie Q.

Yelp
Went here to celebrate a friends promotion and throughly enjoyed the sports bar atmosphere. The food was phenomenal and our servers kept the drinks coming!! Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Blaklee H.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Great vibes and food + amazing service. Sign me up. Will definitely be coming back on the regular. Will definitely be telling all my friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Fun lower Greenville Ave restaurant and bar. Trivia night sucked as could not hear any of the questions. Pizza was good and cocktails expensive. Not sure will visit again. One and done was enough.
google avatar

Jacob H.

Yelp
Eh it was aight Didn't like how the prices were laid out it was like 8 and 10 buckers for certain stuff Butttttt that was with no proteins
google avatar

Angela T.

Yelp
Food was good. Wish the birria tacos came out with more than just two pieces. They came out QUICK. Drinks was good. Service was superb when I sat inside. Would come back. They played good music also on the weekends.
google avatar

Franki H.

Yelp
Great outdoor patio space. There are a lot of TVs so it's a good place to catch a game. The service wasn't great, we had to wave people down to order and get refills. The burger was good but the fries were cold. I asked for fresh french fries and they brought me some. Portions are very large.
google avatar

Elicia P.

Yelp
awesome patio + service was great. Nice TVs. Music not too loud. Drinks were served cold.ranch was good
google avatar

Kathryn S.

Yelp
Great place with a great vibe, always super fun for watching sports but service is laughably bad. Feels like you are thoroughly inconveniencing servers. I know from friends who've worked here that they're on a tip pool and it's absolutely not working for them, the servers are obviously avoiding helping you hoping that someone else will do it.
google avatar

Lori C.

Yelp
I was a little skeptical when we walked in, nice big bar area with a great looking patio area with TVs and comfortable seating outside. It took a bit to be acknowledged (hence the 4 rating) sitting at the bar, and not busy, but once we were able to place a drink order, service was great! I had a Fresh Press which is Vodka based with a blueberry mixer and my husband enjoyed a beer from an Oregon brewery. We ordered the Jalapeno Poppers for an appetizer that were really good! Made with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon, nice kick on the poppers! For dinner we ordered the Fish n Chips which my husband being from Seattle said was the best he had found in Dallas! Very meaty fish, batter not too thick and not greasy! I had the Oregon Bowl with chicken which was excellent! Full of quinoa, carrots, olives, Edemame and a host of other things! Will definitely return for that and some other things they had in their extensive menu.

Yelp
Great, friendly place! Quick service, good food. Lots of TVs and dog friendly.. Parking can be a challenge but give it a shot

Yelp
Charged me automatic 20% gratuity and refused to give me a receipt. Said 20% gratuity is required on every bill (even for a party of 3.) when I asked if it was disclosed anywhere (menu, sign, etc) they said no and that they don't need to disclose it. I called 3 times to speak to a manger to confirm this 20% gratuity rule and to receive a copy of my receipt- I was never given a call back. I finally got ahold of a manger named Hanna, she was very rude and condescending on the phone, she told me the 20% gratuity is in fact a rule but confirmed it's not disclosed anywhere, she told me I could get a copy of my receipt if I gave her my last 4 digits of my card, I did, then she told me she needed the total amount or else it would take her too long to find my receipt from the day I was there (specifically said she didn't want to take the time going through each transaction of that day) and when I said I don't have it, that's why I'm asking for the receipt, she told me to call back (very condescending) when I find it.. clearly trying to brush me off. I spoke to a friend about my experience and he said he had the SAME issue (charged him automatic 20% gratuity for a party of 2 without disclosing.) Update after response* There was sadly 0 communication of the automatic gratuity, not from 1 server, the menu, a sign, nothing. Someone sent the receipt a day after this review was written, thank you for sending, it is appreciated but it is unfortunate I had to write a review to receive my receipt and proved Hanna (the manger) was lying when she said she couldn't send the receipt Still unclear why the management had to be so rude and aggressive with me on the phone.

Yelp
Aesthetically, this is great. The food was presented well. I asked if I should seat myself or of there was some process and the bartender told me we could seat ourselves. After a while I got up and walked around until I found a menu next to a hosting station and a person who's title was, "hostess." She didn't give us a menu I just took one. Nobody came to take an order and we noticed a sign among all the other clutter that said, "order here." The woman who took our order was very nice. Our food - we got a wood fired margarita pizza. The crust was good, very thin. The cheese and tomatoes were ok. But the amount of olive oil that was on top was so unreasonable. I picked up a slice and it didn't just drip, it poured off. My friend got the birria tacos. It looks great, but the meat was bland and it just tasted like deep fried anything. The amount of grease that came out was disgusting. The dip also tasted like nothing. We got the jalapeno poppers as well. The bacon they wrapped the popper in was really good. There's a crust on it we really enjoyed. The pepper was cooked well, but But the cheese filling was so bland! This place could be great, but everything seemed good until it was just mediocre. If you're hammered and willing to spend more money for some greasy crap at a place that looks good, this is your place.

Yelp
Enjoyed a Saturday afternoon lunch at the River Pig patio! I loved being able to have my dog with us and have plenty of TV's and space available. We enjoyed the pizzas and the dry rub wings. Taking a star off because unfortunately the service was lacking and our beer came out very flat.

Yelp
Brunched here today, and had a good time with solid food. Food: best was the chicken and waffles, elevated with fried eggs and hot sauce. Drinks: Pricey, but pretty. Bloody Mark looked like a modern sculpture, loaded with consumables. Ambiance: Open industrial with lots of hard surfaces and stuffed animal heads. Service: Good, but not great. Don't be shy about asking for what you need when you need it, or you might get frustrated waiting. Verdict: Will be back for the chicken and waffles, otherwise ordinary.

Chris N.

Yelp
Really really great beer selection. Many different food options. Very good happy hour. All around awesome spot. Great patio as well!

Yelp
We came here during their first month open to watch the cowboys game & was disappointed as I had great expectations based on their social media during the build process. Upon entry, the bartender looked straight at us then turned away without a "hello", "we'll be right with you", or even a simple smile of acknowledgment and welcome. We decided to continue any way & assume service would improve. We had to wait about 10-15 minutes for our server to come to our table and introduce herself. She was a great server; however the speed of service from intro to drink delivery to food drop of all were slow. We ordered an old fashioned and "the swan" cocktail. Both were overly sweetened & not strong at all. For food, we ordered the fried Brussel Sprouts & the woodsmen pizza. The Brussel sprouts were overly seasoned & too much balsamic was drizzled to a point I couldn't taste the Brussel sprouts. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the pizza was lack luster in regards to flavor. There was almost no flavor when all of the ingredients listed are traditionally full flavor toppings. It is unfortunate that the location & ambiance are all perfect for a night out or game day, but I don't think I'll be coming back.

Yelp
For having recently opened I was super impressed. Great service, awesome French fries, huge outdoor area... they got it all going on. I'm excited to try some of their dranks and to watch games there. Tons of TVs and every seat has a view. Definitely a good place to take a big group. Happy this spot opened in the 'hood!

Marc V.

Yelp
We sat as the sign said "seat yourself" and we were not visited by anyone for service for some time. Then after I asked about ordering the server came over and got waters and left. Then we didn't see her again. We were there for a college football game and all the TVs were off and on small games compared to larger games (I understand if someone requested) Majority of the patio patrons were there to watch the same game as I and when we asked if the sound could be in that game the manager/bartender let me know they were a Clemson watch party bar and they wouldn't change it (although there were maybe 5 people there for that game vs 20+) We decided to leave because we just didn't get service and when walking out I let the manager/bartender know why we were leaving and he just shrugged his shoulders Peak Saturday patio hours place was pretty dead, wouldn't be shocked if it keeps going down with this experience

Yelp
Went here for a friends birthday brunch one weekend and to watch some football. They have a nice patio and there is a little parking beside it available. We were the only ones inside to start but as it got closer to noon the place filled up to the max. The service was just okay, often times the server would check in with just 1 person at the table then go, instead of checking with everyone. They have a legit pizza oven and make their pizzas right in front of it, tried both the Spicy Pepperoni Pizza $15.00 and the Woodsman $17.00. Pretty solid taste wise, the woodsman was my favorite. They are maybe 10" or 12" diameter pizzas. I also got to try a Birria Taco which was pretty good but 2 for $12.00 is not worth it to me. I'm sure I will be back here some point in time.

Raya R.

Yelp
Food was pretty good. Went around 5 on a Friday and there was barely any people. There wasn't a lot of workers on the floor, but idk how many there usually are. Also there is a bit of broken glass in the parking lot so be careful.
google avatar

Anna A.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the service was amazing. We took our dog to enjoy their patio & the server was amazing and so sweet to our boy. They also catered to him and brought him grilled chicken. We ordered the 2 birria tacos and a pepperoni pizza. It did not disappoint. Good food and service and they welcome dogs
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
Great new spot for outdoor patio dining, sports television, and draft beers on lower Greenville. Their chicken tenders are amazing, some of the best in the neighborhood! I also love the wings here. Service is good when things aren't too busy.
google avatar

JT A.

Yelp
Great environment with great service and really delicious food. Love the patio and is dog friendly. Will be back for sure!
google avatar

Hannah F.

Yelp
We sat at the bar, even though the bartender was super busy he was still very attentive and still kept up good conversation. I got the mac lovin and added pork. SO GOOD. And I didn't expect the portions to be that good. My friend got the chicken strips and that's her second time having them so they must be good too. Happy with this and will be back!
google avatar

Caitlyn R.

Yelp
New buzzy spot with lots of space for dining and can accommodate larger groups inside & out. Service is good but our food prep and delivery time wasn't the best. We ordered mac & cheese, pizza, the bison burger, and chicken sandwich. The max & cheese came up first, 15 minutes later the sandwiches came out, then another 15 minutes after that the pizza finally came out. Everything tasted good but the timing was awkward as everyone was eating and finished at different times. Drinks were good and flowing the whole time so we made due.
google avatar

Hollie R.

Yelp
Nice outdoor patio. Went at about 1 pm on a Saturday and they sadly only service brunch at that time. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros - good but I probably wouldn't order again. My friend ordered the Steak and Eggs, which she really enjoyed! Our waitress mentioned she was new and gave great service.

Andy N.

Yelp
Went here the other day to watch the Mavericks Game with a friend. Ordered a couple drinks and the salmon plate. Ate about a third of the salmon when I realized the salmon was still RAW and cooked roughly 50% the way through in the middle. I asked the waiter for another plate and you would think they would fix their error promptly and as quick as they can, however, I waited long enough to wonder if they forgot about my entree. Eventually I got another plate but by that time all my friends were done eating so it was just me and my lonesome. The service was decent, but kept forgetting to bring us silverware to eat our food. So yeah, be WARY OF THE SALMON PLATE!
google avatar

Laura F.

Yelp
Had brunch Saturday... went around 11:30am with our pooch. Ordered coffee and waters in hopes of curing the hangovers --- we were struggling. Food makes everything better... Sorry no photos this time 1. I ordered the veggie omelet and it was great. I also asked for toast instead of potatoes and that was the right choice. Toast was crisp to perfection. Their salsa was also tasty. (Asked for salsa vs hot sauce) 2. Husband had the Huevos. He licked his plate clean. The sauce on the huevos was money. 3. Service was good. No complaints. Will return. Love that the outdoor seating/dog space is turf vs rocks or sand And they open early at 10am for weekend brunch; for the days when we aren't nursing hangovers.

Yelp
Just left the place and it was near empty but nobody took our order after quite awhile. Left without even placing an order must not fit their type of clientele? Place sucks.

Coby Z.

Yelp
Living in the walkable area and have been multiple times now I love this place! The food is great from what I've tried each time, as well as the drinks and happy hour is great. Steven the manager is a swell guy and Aisha and Emmi are amazing bartenders! Highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Philip B.

Yelp
Outdoorsy young crowd. Great for college football day. Fun place to watch the nonsense going on around us. Service reasonable for what it is. But the woodsman pizza.... Holy crap it's good. It's insane.

Joyce P.

Yelp
We came on a midweek holiday day for a beer and a snack - delicious draft beer and nachos. Aisha was great - very friendly and attentive, would come back here anytime! We'll be back to enjoy more food - the wood burning fire for pizzas looks good, menu has so many good options.

Trey C.

Yelp
Great food all scratch made and an incredible patio with TVs! Great service and great selection of food and beverages! Our favorite local neighborhood spot!!

Joel G.

Yelp
Went during Happy Hour for the patio. Very nice atmosphere, waitress/bartender was attentive and quick. Dog friendly patio. Nachos were good and a great deal. Only negative was the reggae music that played the entire time we were there. Wasn't horrible but would have been nice to have a mix of music.
google avatar

Alyssa J.

Yelp
Food was amazing!! We had brunch and it was to die for!! Our waitress Mariah was AMAZING!!! So sweet and on top of everything! Gave our puppy water!!! The music and vibes of the place are great! TVs everywhere and fans everywhere! 12/10 would recommend this place to a friend!

Thomas H.

Yelp
Looking forward to a great hamburger. Wrong!! Meat was dry and tough. Service was lacking. Wai

Cindy L.

Yelp
Loved it. Ambiance was on point. We love patio weather. Didn't plan on staying through the entire Mavs game but we did and had a blast. Will definitely go again. Emily was great - customer service - and stephen -manager-extremely helpful and great customer service as well. Will definitely be goin again
google avatar

Robert A.

Yelp
The food and drinks are fine but pretty overpriced, especially considering how bad the service is. Another "instagramable" lower Greenville place that is all hype.
google avatar

Meg F.

Yelp
River Pig Saloon, an Oregon transplant, fits perfectly in the former American Flatbread Co./Firestone location on Lowest Greenville Avenue. Despite the large space, the atmosphere and decor make for a cozy and welcoming environment. They serve elevated, high-quality bar food with enough options to meet most dietary needs. Our family enjoyed our experience and will continue to go back as frequently as possible. (I recommend any of the burgers or flatbread pizzas, and the Oregon's Finest Bowl.)
google avatar

Cole L.

Yelp
Good service, fun atmosphere, really good chicken tenders and curly fries. I would recommend!
